Life After Steel in the UK's Most Polluted Town: Rule Britannia
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 сен 2024
- In March 2016 the steelworks in Port Talbot, South Wales, were threatened with closure. 700 people were made immediately redundant and reports suggested another 15,000 jobs, in a town of just 45,000, could be affected. Port Talbot was set to become a ghost town.
In the midst of the uncertainty and limbo, a father of four Nigel Hunt - who had already lost his steelworker job of 10 years - begins building a new future with a colourful start-up business, in the most polluted city in the UK. With no investment, or disposable income, the stakes are high but some unexpected turns lead Nigel to a new path, away from the fire and furnace, which he never could have dreamed of.

can you guys add translations
can't understand anything they are saying, having CC available in English would be helpful.
Here is the summary for everyone else that can't understand whatever language they are speaking: A guy starts selling T-Shirts.
And, I have no idea how the Steel Industry, nor pollution is related to that, seems to be a very misleading title.
cool
Vice, you need subtitles for these people as well, not just for people of color. It's ridiculous that you have subtitles for POC that speak English clearly and fluently, but not for these people who are actually difficult to understand.
Hey VICE, I swear he said he lost his job "10 MONTHS" ago, not 10 years. Please change your information.
The welsh are a hardy bunch, respect from North West England.
Should do more stuff on South Wales.
Tis truly a train derailing in slow-motion. Sadly for its residents, it's not slow enough. Cardiff's already the smack capital of the UK, not long before it's the smack capital of the world. Britain will truly rule again!!
Where did you get this information on Cardiff being the "smack capital" of the UK??
No they shouldn't ... motherfuckers don't even sound like they're speaking English . You have to use captions to know what they're saying lol
Cardiff isn't that big with smack compared with Swansea and even Newport. never once in Cardiff have i seen someone openly shooting up yet in the South Wales valleys i have seen it many times
@@mikesully110 north Wales was the smack capital from what I've heard
No matta what anyone says it was a pleasure growing up in sandfields port talbot. Such a good childhood.
Proud to be from here💯
Wow, that was a rough place. Nice beach though.
Nigel Hunt is as real as it gets, refreshing to see decent journalism by Vice. Nothing played up to the camera, this guy is a great ambassador for the town. He should be mayor. He is for the people of Port Talbot and deserves his pension for his service and commitment. Not like the other crook politicians in it for them selves. Well done Vice you picked the right guy to nightlight the plight of the Steelworkers. I myself am from the town, my father having worked at the plant as a rigger. I know first hand that Nigel's case was unfair dismissal. Bullying in the work place should not be tolerated or brushed under the carpet.
"theve done it on the back" i felt so bad when i heard him say this
We had a huge steelworks in my town it's now a toxic wasteland, progress!
:(
Redcar I’m guessing
Nigel is such a great example of a resilient figure in a community going through tough times. There will be a lot more stories like this in the future as industries are transferred to renewable resources and the like, and this fills me with a lot of hope for the transition that our world will have to undertake to be sustainable
Finally some good journalism from vice.
Joe Cramp 😴
You've got to be kidding, right? Vice is... just... fucking insane lately with the quality of their work. You meant that as a joke, right?
Hochuck Winnebago I agree, this was good though.
Did you subscribe a month ago? Vice journalism was brilliant a few years ago. As per usual jumped on the corporate ship with promises of the same and completely changed. A majority of the stuff now is rehashed leftist bullshit. I respect your opinion don't think I don't. Just it seems they have swayed heaps far with VICE news etc.
"Finally some journalism that fits my agenda"
This is much like the story of a small town in England called Corby. The British Steel steelworks were everything in that town. My dad worked there, my mum worked there. My dad was an electrician for British Steel too. He fell from a crane one day and broke his leg. He ended up leaving to become a cab driver and shortly after that the steelworks were closed down. That town went to rack and ruin after that. It was practically a ghost town. Nothing for kids to do but steal cars and joyride. Our town was the teenage pregnancy capital of Europe in those days.
Same at Ebbw Vale where I worked for 35 years.
Falling into molten Iron. No thanks.
ruin your day wouldnt it?
around that shit everyday couldn't even imagine it
Better than falling into poverty
My Uncle was a former worker there, he had his leg sawed off by the train that carries all the steel and stuff.
@@elevatorsinwales9792 Was he compensated for the injury?
just like up here in the north east with the pits, shipyards and steelworks. we have not a trace left, how times are a changing.
:(
CommieIamewan
Nobody does. Everything is in China. The new empire.
Industry is booming here in South Carolina (Charleston). Unemployment is sub 4% at the time of this post. The 'factory' work of which I am employed in is considered high tech manufacturing with the latest machining equipment (I work on a brand new 6 spindle index turning machine, touch screen interface ... it's slick). I make decent money and have excellent benefits (health, dental, vision, disability, matching 401k, the list goes on). There are no unions here. My work environment is clean, safe, and climate controlled. So yeah, times are changing.
couldn't agree more, i'm a 17 year old fabricator and welder, 40 years ago i'd have been snapped up by the biggest firms. now, you are even lucky here to get an apprenticeship. this is one of the biggest reasons i have for leaving the north east of england, theres just nothing here for me.
I work at a steel mill here in the US for a major company. I know how these workers feel. This is their livelihoods. Steel making is a hard, dirty and dangerous job. It’s also unpredictable because when consumer spending is down, orders for steel goes down which means potential layoffs or hours cut. We are especially dependent on the auto industry as they are our major customers. The rust belt of the United States has been hard hit for decades. Steel mills, auto plants, coal mines. It’s no wonder drug abuse is high in the rust belt here. This place reminds me of where I’m from minus the mountains.
Wish you guys the best.
You must be from Indiana since it's flat and in the Midwest, unless you live somewhere near Pittsburgh, Pa
They done em on the back
They done em on the back
They done em all on the back
They done em all on the back
(gets one guy willing to buy)
...its great artwork... and they pulled it off pretty good actually...
Ah Vice.. Finally something that's not weed related . Thank you
Solidarity with the Port Talbot men, from the West Midlands.
I live 10 miles from PT, in Swansea. It’s a different world here.
swansea has a nice view of the steelworks
Well done Shelley and team, great seeing Pancho and his crew, look forward to seeing more like this.
6:29 MF DOOM shirt
Phurfee thought i was the only one who noticed
i have it aswell
I scrolled down to look for this comment, glad there are a few others that noticed!
yup!
ALL CAPS WHEN YOU SAY THE MAN NAME
Vice at its best, letting the people and visuals tell the story rather than a spindly 20-something SocialStudies Student narrating it all.
and the north east was forgotten, and its industry died
North west too. Good example being Birkenhead, my hometown.
Loads of pits round Yorkshire you can go in sad now really
Felt so bad when he realised they had printed the designs on the back of the t-shirts
Amazing story, love the welsh!!!!!
I grew up in a city that lost all it's industry soon after I was born. It sucks. The whole Great Lakes region of the US was decimated in the late '70s. Peace from Youngstown, Ohio.
Man.. some parts of UK are just so depressing
depression is everywhere
This is Wales, screw the UK
Its to much regulation, my start up aims to take on china for manufacturing some products but there is way to much socialism and regulation. Making it very hard to just get the job done, like those old factories if there wasn't so much regulation then startups could buy this wasteland a build cheap structures. bt the business tax rates on premises is crazy. Britain could be great we just need real capitalism / free market, its not so free is the problem.
Most of the time it’s decent but sometimes it’s shit really shit
Ireland is even worse than Wales.
I though it was Burnie Burns on the thumbnail for a second
A steelworker and a coalburner. How does he keep up with so much work ?
For hope: See Pittsburgh's transformation after the steel industry left. Can the Welsh do it?
Business has the potential to be the hub of a community, as it previously has been. ‘Every man for himself’ mentality kills communities, kills the spirit, and eventually kills humans through depression. A community is a basic human need.
Neo-Liberalism makes no provision for community. As Thatcher said "There is no such thing! There are individual men and women and there are families". Her vision is complete.
The ones that move on survive, the ones that "this is my home not going anywhere" just rot away
I just want to give Nigel a hug.
From one Nigel to another, you will do fine sir. Hang in there Nige and keep on. God Bless from the states.
Cool guy, Good Luck.... Never give up!
The image is better on the back imo.
8:31 is that my boi Pancho?? Hell yeah
I think the first tshirt was supposed to say 'San Portalbo' but it actually says 'San Portablo', which is just confusing
I love these people because they know what's important for their community. They don't question what it is they ought to be doing. 1929...
Would you guys consider making video about Norilsk? Look it up, it's pretty interesting.
I don't understand the heavy accent and subtitles are not helping! So he has a T Shirt brand? That is really cool! I think when industries change and evolve then it is good time to delve more into your hobbies. Soon all of our hobbies will be the future of work. Especially when Basic Income is implemented.
Watching a mans life fall apart Episode 1
To make steel you need iron. Britain is not the top iron digger in the world nor it has lots of deposits. So iron is imported which just ads to the costs of manufacturing. Draw a conclusion.
I've worked there, not as a steel worker though. It seems they recycle most of their steel. Not import it. Plenty of scrap metal here
Vice have used their camera filters to make the place look much more grim than it really is, it’s a good place to live imo.
It's a fucking shithole, that's why we moved to Canada.
Ann Oynmous what's Canadaistan?
Green Silver It may be a nice place to live but you can't deny it's grim.
+Ann Oynmous The Alt-Right and White Nationalists use the term instead of Canada because of the number of middle eastern refugees Canada as accepted in recent years. According to them Canada is being taken over by them and so they thought it was clever to rename it Canadanistan. Idiots forgot the countries that end with stan are in Central Asia not the Middle East. Lol
Same beach through a different lens.

Anyone else from Port Talbot watching??:D
yup
👍 carmarthen
Yo.
Lamenting the decline of British inudstry while importing dirt cheap chinese t-shirts for a profit
I had no idea what was going with the documentary, the title of the video and what they were saying until I read the description
This is going to test the limits of youtubes auto CC. the fuck they saying?
I recognise a few of them Port Talbot boys from the bob bank at Ninian Park back in the day. Respect to you Nigel. Although i'm from the Vale i did work quite a few times as a subby on the blast furnace . Not a place for the faint hearted . If you stood still for a minute ya boots would melt
God Bless This Man💯💯💯 Learned Alot Watching This ?
The FUCK are they saying!?!
Figure it out.
English do you speak it? Quite clearly saying save our steel.
butt
Slay our seals.
Us diaspora need subtitles.
Yes, we get it. You're an arrogant American who can't understand any other accent unless they roll their r's like a loud-mouthed valley girl. Move along.
Nigel is a Great Man , an inspiration to any one who wants to make a go of some thing , dealing with the Ups and the Downs
He should be the Mayor .
MF DOOM @6.29
They done them on the back I think
INTRO SONG??
When you know everyone in the documentary 😂
This reason I subscribed to vice because of these kind of documentaries, not for those pot heads.
I too like to walk past iron foundries I used to work at carrying a box of t-shirts.
Nice to see my hometown get represented.
shame about the final HEY....
Holy shit. I live there
good on you nigel. what a man
Your closed captions are FUCKED. Not even close lmao. It's like Siri is writing them out and just guessing what people are saying. Not enough interns to transcribe Vice?
Why would they waste time captioning to English when English is being spoken?
+Josiana Greenaway exactly
Karl Dutton lol wut?
Nate Ring captions are made by google servers, not humans.. its getting way better, but yeah, still mot accurate. You think if windows 95 had it, it would be perfectly translated by computers like IBM watson by now
trying to get a computer to understand welsh lol english people cant understand the welsh
NOt sure whats worse.. being laid off or having to breath the toxic air the corporation that laid you off spews out?
This man is an everyday hero.
wow. The guy talking at 13.18 in refers to Women in port talbot as MILFS. " Half the Milfs in Port Talbot wish to be sold tea towels"
So sad,the same thing has happened in north east England with mining and steel works.theres never been so much poverty and drug taking
These aren't Auto generated captions so why are they so wrong and insensitive to the people going through this situation?
Even google cant make subtitles
Can you really not understand them
Pancho how I’ve missed you ❤️
Feel very bad for these people. The fact remains though that manufacturing and similar industries have no place in 1sr world countries which high wages compared to the emerging countries like China and India. Imagine if UK could only buy clothes made in the UK. The cost of a t-shirt would be like 50 pounds. The cost of living would be enormous and poverty would be widespread. No easy answer but to retrain and gain skills that are employable in modern day Britain
Great stuff VICE, really interesting. But could you please include subtitels? it is really hard for non native speakers to understand a single word ;)
The Welsh resilience, fantastic.
Loving the Tee designs, I'd stick Westminster in foreground of that AT-AT design, concentrate maximum firepower on that shithole...
Is it any wonder the Irish, Scot's and Welsh all get on great, no bad blood, we've all been shat on continuously by government time and again, look at where all the money and infrastructure rests, certainly not in the abundance as seen in England...
I have no ill feeling toward English btw, just don't like the all take and no give governments that preside down that neck of the woods...
Ace story, will be ordering my AT-AT tee from San Portablo store and wear it in my hometown of Glasgow where right now our shipbuilding is at threat since Tories have placed contracts up for international bidding.
Stick in people and thanks for sharing!..
Thank god for subtitles
lol 30 euro for a shirt what a rip off
Good luck mucker, next time I'm in the area I'll buy a couple.
He wants to start selling those shirts. If an industry is unprofitable, it's unprofitable, and he has a great moneymaker on his hands.
a few of those tees looked good.. and dirty sanchez! thats old skool!
This is the most depressing thing I've seen for a while
Reminds me of coal mining jobs in West Virginia. There's not a lot but it's the best paying job in the area. Regardless of educational level
Good luck Nigel!
I think it's safe to assume that these guys ain't no vampires.
30 Euros for a plain T-shirt? Mon Dieu! E.U. needs to be disbanded so prices become more reasonable and rational across each, respective, E.U. member country.
Shocking subtitles!
WAIT A MINUTE.. THIS GUY LOST HIS JOB BECAUSE OF A TRAFFIC INFRACTION...?
Fun fact port talbot lost $366 million dollars last year despite getting a $1 biliion investment from the Welsh Gov
Hi, interesting docu, but your subtitles are way off, I'm not Welsh
The subtitles are wrong lmao sort it out vice good job I can understand what their saying
you guys are awesome to be honest
"They took ooooooour YOBS"
All hail Lelouch Vi Britannia!
Eric Forman haha nice reference :)
We are in the midst of a massive transfer of wealth/industry from Western countries to Asian ones.
subtitles are horrendously incorrect.
at 16:00 Is that the accent or is he just pissed off his ass?
24:20 - Is that Colin Pascoe, assistant manager at Liverpool FC under Rodgers!? WTF :D
Small business people 'trying to make it' and then NOT depresses the snot out of me. They just seem to think fire is going to catch beause they are excited and it usually does not take shape. I thought I was going to cry when the shirts arrived with the print on the back. I'd be like "FUCK! FAAAAACK! FUUUUCCKKKKK SOMEONE IS GOING TO DIE BECAUSE OF THIS. FAAAACKKKKKK!!!!!."
Hell yeah, respect his hustle👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
What are they even saying i only understood the premise that they lost their jobs because of possible lack of steel i don't really know what else they were talking about
Dark ^-^ about 2/3 English 1/3 Welsh
What a happy ending! :)
That's the way lad... Chin up. Onwards and upwards.
Should put subtitles.
TATA is a privately owned Indian company, isn't it? No reason to believe they have any sense of loyalty to the towns or people that work in their plants. If there is a threat of a redundancy of that amount, I dunno, Instead of marching I'd be looking far away for new opportunities or like this guy, make your own. IMO, when the threat of big layoffs arrive, it's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when".
Otherwise seem like a great bunch of people here.
