    Great thx. Here's some extra info. from my experience with a RH drive: DO NOT LET THE THE released DOOR DROP more than 5 cm. If you let the door drop down quickly like in the video, it can break a mechanism to one side. Once it is down 5 cm observe the arm on the LH side of the box and how it slides in the mechanism. You can then slowly lower the lid completely.
    There are 3 clips on the top edge of the filter cover. They have little bumps that locate. Press down on the one nearest the steering wheel & shove in the lightest trim removal tool while you press down on the centre one and pull on the vertical tab of the the cover a little. Still with the tool in, press down on the LH side clip & remove the cover. Bevel the edges of the clips where they “cut into” your fingers for comfort next time. If female, try not to break a nail.
    VERY carefully, free up the filter and pull it out ONLY a cm.
    Now you should slip a thin piece of crardbroad in under the filter to prevent debris that scrapes from the top of the filter falling down. Trim it to the same size as your filter. VERY carefully remove the filter. It needs to be pulled a little to the left. Carefully lift out the cardboard-plus-debris. If any debris falls down, vacuum it out.
    Two little rubber stoppers may fall out., They fit on the prongs that are held behind the release buttons. If dislodged, retrieve after lid is hanging. Try not to dislodge by keeping lid lifted a little while pressing on the buttons Refit & secure with Super Glue.
    The release buttons are on the end of 10 cm long arms. Make them easier to flex by 2mm nicks on the engine end

    Very helpful. I blindly pushed a CD into the slot that let it drop behind the glove box - instead of into the CD player!!!
    This video was exactly what I needed. Pushing “The two buttons” allowed me to pull the glove box forward and access my misplaced CD. Thank you so much!

    I can't believe how easy this is for my alltrack im doing this today! my old Ford Fiesta st required you get in an acrobatic position, tear apart the passenger footwell, perform wizardry and reduce your hand size to even get at the cover screws. and then the only way to insert the filter was scrunching it back to fit, which ruined the filter half the time.. thank you Dap for the how to video, and vw for actually putting thought into this filter placement.

  • @jsplasha
    @jsplasha 2 года назад +1

    Here's my take on activated charcoal cabin air filters. They don't destroy the cause of the odors, they trap and contain them. Which is fine, but they can only contain so much. Once they're saturated, the rest of the air going through them is not only carrying it's own vapors but it's passing it through all the trapped vapors accumulated from the previous months too. Which is why they recommend to change them more frequently. But I don't think it's frequent enough.
    I have 2 stage filters on my indoor air purifier, 1 stage is just activated charcoal, not woven in to fabric just pure activated charcoal. Except they are about 5x the size of these cabin filters. They're rated for 3 months before they lose their ability to absorb more odor. And they arent near a combustion engine they're just indoors. So how long do you think a charcoal filter will last when it's that close to a combustion engine? Not 20,000 miles that's for sure. Probably not 3 months either since it's so much smaller than the ones in my indoor filter yet has to handle 1000x more air and odor. So hown long before the charcoal filter just becomes a regular filter? Not 3 months. 3 weeks? 3 days? 3 hours? Hard to say.
    You'll notice a difference at first for sure, but by the time the charcoal is saturated you'll have adjusted to the smell and won't notice it.
    It'd be fine if the charcoal filters were like $10 but they aren't, they're like $30-$50 here, twice as much as the regular filter. Which might make you inclined to not replace it as frequently.
    So my advice, instead of spending twice as much on a charcoal filter and replacing it once a year, get a regular filter and change it twice a year. Cost the same. 6 month old activated charcoal cant beat a brand new filter. Or get something more advanced like the Mann FR filter that's more than just activated charcoal, even though that might cost 5x as much, it would last longer and filter much more. But again, unless I had a real allergy or lived in a really polluted city, I'd still rather buy 5 regular filters and replace them 5x a year than 1 advanced filter that I try to make last as long as possible because it cost me $80. But these are Canadian prices. YMMV.
    Lastly, it's really important you replace that grommet on the right or the car thinks the glove box is always open and keeps that little light inside the glovebox on at all times. And it gets hot. Possible fire hazard if you had a glovebox stuffed with dry leaves and zippo lighters. But mostly just annoying.

    Is there a second filter accessible from the engine through the cowl, or is this (through glovebox) the only one filter for the cabin? Thank you!

  • @marlobardo4274

    Thanks Deutsche Auto Parts. I have a VW Golf 2012 MK 6 Diesel Bluemotion. My question [which my mechanic is unsure how to answer] is this: would the charcoal cabin filter be more efficient at filtering small diesel/carbon particles than an ordinary cabin air filter? I am purely interested in reducing any possible negative diesel carbon particles i.e. carcinogenic effects. So I am interested more in the air quality effects rather than odour reduction.

  • @tallgrass5061

    Thx for the video. Coupla points gleaned from a workshop manual. Do not let the door drop > 5 cm. Good practice to slip something in under the filter before removal to prevent anything like debris falling down & messing up anything downstream. First-hand experience ....bulk up finger strength with daily attempts to push up the buttons until you succeed. A hot day will help by making the buttons softer. If 2 rubber things drop, retain them better with BluTac. If filter is carbon-filled, clean only the top surface with gentle sucking to avoid removing carbon.

    • @tallgrass5061
      @tallgrass5061 4 года назад

      More. Yet to develop sufficient strength to press those buttons and thus see behind the glovebox, could VW have made the lowering arm detachable at the side and done away with the pesky super-strong buttons and used a couple of screws to hold? That's how my last car worked. The "arm" was a simple piston-in-cylinder damper.

    • @tallgrass5061
      @tallgrass5061 4 года назад

      More (from actual experience). Be sure u r pressing on the release buttons and not some immovable part. Free up one button then the other. Two little rubber stoppers may fall out., They fit on the prongs that are held behind the release buttons. If dislodged, retrieve after lid is hanging. Try not to dislodge by keeping lid lifted a little while pressing on the buttons. Refit stoppers & secure with Super Glue.
      If not found use 2mm thick rubber. The buttons are on the end of 10 cm long arms. Make them easier to flex by 2mm nicks on the engine end.

    One thing to keep in mind when doing this, if you let the door drop down quickly like he did in the video, it will break the mechanism on the right. Your glove box will make a weird squaking / creaking noise if you do that. More than likely his broke before and probably does make noise, which was why it fell down so fast.

    • @jsplasha

      Nope, that's how they all drop down. The mechanism on the right comes out almost every time unless you drop it with the delicately of putting a newborn into a crib, but it's hard to not let it drop fast because you need both hands to open it, If the mechanism comes out you literally just put it back. Its not even screwed in it just sits in there. So just put it back. Done. Fixed. If yours makes a sound it needs lubricantion. Put some silicone grease on it.

In the center of the plastic brake "ring", press the sliding bar out towards the door and the bar attached to the brake will release. You can see them putting it back in place at the 2:30 mark in the video. Also, to release the clips on the air filter cover, I used my right hand to apply outward (opening) pressure on the plastic nub on the right side of the filter cover. While doing that, I used a small screwdriver to pry apart the clips at the top, and the air filter cover popped off super easy. Great video otherwise!

    My mechanic broke my glovebox trying to do this

    “You can just push them down” yeah...no not on my mine. I fucked with the clips for 30 minutes before giving up. Ill have to trust the dealership to hopefully do it.

      Yep, I'm a now retired mechanical design engineer and was also frustrated by that. Key is knowing that the lower three tabs on top protrude a little more than the upper three tabs. Have to push down on them with a fingernail (long handle screw driver might be better, but be careful) and then the cover hinges down on the lower three tabs, which are so incredibly cheap that there almost laughable.

    To me that arrow is point up, not down. But it's blurry. And the new filter has no arrow. Oof

    Jeez. I can't believe that it's like paying a tech $100 to put a vhs tape in a vcr.

    @1:10 press the tabs "which" way. Down or Up ?? The arrows point up.. Either way with much force I can get no movement on the tabs. I'm about to forcefully rip the door off and cover it with duct tape.
    I figured out the issue.
    Seems the 3 PUSH DOWN tabs don't stick out far enough beyond the housing itself WHICH ALSO HAS 3 plastic tabs in the exact same position sandwiched just above it so it looks like ONE combined tab. Whose the VW idiot engineer who tortured us with that? I was trying to push down the housing tabs which don't move. Since its dark in there and the tabs are tightly sandwiched together (looking like one tab), I had to use a thin bladed screwdriver to separate the tabs, starting from the left. The obvious tabs at the bottom of the panel act to allow the panel to swing down. Don't break them like I did trying to remove the door from the bottom. It really needs a redesign.

    Way too much useless talk at the beginning. There should be more focus on the details regarding the three tabs that release the filter covers. They aren't marked nor are they intuitive. They're also very delicate, with very little room for exploratory release prior to failure. Drop the glovebox as (well) explained here and you'll see 6 very cheap tabs (three sets of two). The lower three tabs are ever so slightly longer than the top tabs. Carefully push down on the LOWER three tails with a fingernail to release. Better yet, use a long handle flat blade screwdriver. Guys like the poster probably do this routinely. Do this just once and it becomes simple. But do it the first time without more specific instructions and it's not. And trust me, VW left no room for error here. Basically, the plastic tabs will break if you look at them the wrong way. I'd have specified lower tabs that are thicker, protruded a little more and had two ribs for a firmer grip and more intuitive process. But that would cost money...

    I dropped all the shit in my glove box onto the floor. Hahaha, then the light switch on the right side, you can see it in the video, ya well that whole thing fell apart. Clumsy! Lucky I didn't break any parts or I'd be fucken done.... DONE.
