- This detail foreshadowed the ending of the movie! When they arrive at the mental asylum, the two US marshals are asked to remove their weapons. Chuck fumbles while trying to remove his holster, something that shouldn’t be so difficult for someone with experience. His inexperience as we later learn is because he isn’t a marshal but is in actual fact a doctor at the mental asylum and is only posing as a law enforcer to watch over Teddy Daniels, otherwise known as Andrew Laeddis.

Youre right. Its fun rewatching to see the clues. Like what you said. Or the fact Leo's character wasnt able to light his own smoke because they wouldnt give a lighter to a patient.
Half way through the movie you think you know why they're like this then your entire world gets flipped upside-down

When I first watched the movie I had assumed Chuck struggling to remove his gun was that he was just inexperienced as a Martial. Great twist.
I read the book Shutter Island before I saw the movie, and I didn’t remember Chuck fumbling with his gun. Apparently, Scorsese added that part. I had the same reaction as you to that scene. I also thought he might be nervous with the guards being a bit menacing. Chuck being a doctor took me completely by surprise.

Strange thing about this movie.... I had a dream about this movie back in 2006 and remembered the entire thing and when it came out in 2010 I swore that I've seen it before and knew the ending before it was over.

I agree! I like movies that have multiple reasonable interpretations. It also takes a lot of guts to show a woman drinking a glass of water - without a glass of water! I missed that completely! That makes me wonder what else I missed.

I thought he was the cop and they just drugged him and in the end it was just him giving in to the drugs
He was going to expose the inhumane experiments that were going on there. Using their expertise to experiment on him, dosing him through cigarettes & pills, and setting up and carefully manipulating information and 'clues' for him pick up on.
But that's the thing, crazy people are the perfect subjects. They talk and nobody listens.

It was not as if he was intended to watch over teddy.. It was all a scene in teddy's mind..it was all real in his mind and no one is covering up the truth in that world.
I highly recommend that people read the book as the book is one thousand percent better than the movie.
The Book is a lot more Open For interpretation as far as I remember. And I think with the Movie it’s the Same. The Music at the end is absolutely: Everything is clear now OR IS IT??
To get the full story watch it minimum 3 times. The first time I was taking the side of Andrews-Teddys narrative
I honestly hated this movie when I first watched it. Then when I finally understood the ending it became one of my favorites

What about the storm?
They probably got him in the ferry at the beginning to make the situation more believable to Teddy/Andrew, but he never actually got far from the island.
@@edwardburch7939 That one is explained in the novel by Dr. Cawley: since they already knew the contents of Laeddis' delusion, they waited until a storm was forecast to put their plan into play.

It's not a cameo, it's a substantial speaking role.
Ted Levine has 109 acting credits to his name, he's not just "guy who played Buffalo Bill".
For me the best part of the movie is, I still cannot be sure if Andrew Lades is mad, or if the whole island is mad.
Although intuitively I feel the hospital is genuine, emotionally I’d rather Andrew Lades is the only one normal… kinda sad
I thought the whole island might be up to no good (or possible mad, as you said). It just didn’t seem reasonable that a sane person could be driven insane by a few horrible tragedies experienced as an adult - even over the guilt at what he had done. I’ve never known a stable adult to suddenly lose touch with reality, and I think it only happens in fiction. I’ve known some VERY psychologically troubled people, but they aren’t THAT disconnected with reality.
I HAVE met people who had psychological problems since early childhood, but only one who developed psychological problems as an adult (I barely knew him). In contrast, I’ve seen groups of people go along with unethical ideas - usually following a charismatic leader. So, the whole island being mad makes more sense to me too.
I know a girl who snapped and lost her mind. She went from a normal college student, wife, mother of a child .. to living homeless on the street - stalking people, stalking ME, would talk about nonsense and made up people . Insane to see, she didn’t just lose her job, she lost her mind and it seemed to happen after she gave birth. I also know my coworker had “lost” his mind and came back after years of meds and therapy - went from talking to angels and stalking people, going to mental hospitals etc to being a married man and living a stable life. I think it happens more than you think. I didn’t know any of these people till my 30’s
@@spe.z.artist i do feel that people , human beings, are mentally vulnerable. I was personally at the edge of cracking down… feel sorry for those that lost their minds, but at the same time I talk to myself to be strong … for another 30 years or so … for this short life time :)
He was a Marshall at some point, and he was also on the military. I don’t think this should’ve been too hard for him

He also didn’t have his smokes on him. No smoker is going to an island without remembering his smokes.

It seems from the beginning, it's always other person who light his smoke, because since he's actually a patient there, the rule was that it's dangerous for a patient to bring a lighter or smoke on their own.
In the initial scene on the boat he says he can't find his smokes and he and chuck wonder if someone on the boat stole them.

Um actually, it is still difficult for Law Enforcement officers. The holsters are designed to stay attached to your clothing
Its not difficult at all. Im not law enforcement or had nearly the training theyve had and i can remove mine very easily and fast.

@@Sehon13UltdI havent Seen the Movie in Ages but I think I remembered that everything is up for your own Interpretation. As far as I remember there are Clues for every possibility Even more so in the Book. I wanted to Read That for years now, guess i‘ll do that soon.
