  • It's in the shadow of the war in Ukraine that NATO marks its 75th anniversary. The alliance, while bigger than ever, is facing the biggest challenges since its inception: war on its borders and lingering questions about its future after the upcoming US election. But today was a day to show unity: At a meeting in Brussels, NATO vowed to keep supporting Ukraine's fight against Russia's invasion, promising membership… someday, somehow. Meanwhile, the Kremlin says its relations with NATO have reached the level of open confrontation and that there is zero communication between Moscow and the alliance.
For more on this, we talk to Jim Townsend. He spend decades working on European and NATO policy at the Pentagon and NATO itself. He's now an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security and joins us tonight from Paris.
We also speak with our Correspondents Teri Schultz at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels and Miodrag Soric in Riga. Our Moscow bureau moved there after Russia banned DW from reporting in the country.
And we talk to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

... You mean like Reagan's " Star Wars " scheme ? ... Not only does the tech not exist - it's still beyond our practical capabilities, and it is prohibitively expensive. There was ALSO a concern that even if the technical and monetary problems can be overcome, the tracking systems could be thrown off by simple tricks, such as dispersing shredded metal foils in their path - don't forget, the timing would be a split-second decision.
And just putting all that hardware in space would be virtually impossible ... Elon Musk's " Starship " has been a spectacular failure so far !

Well, good things are coming from all of this, Norway will reach 2% GDP of spending this year, and by 2036 it should be at 3% GDP (announced today). And they are not alone in this heavy spending. So lets see, the weapon industry that is almost defunct in europe, is being rebuilt. Artillery/ammo and missile production is being ramped up across the european continent. And if we can get the 100Bn spening plan will work on some level, we can do this, even wihout a USA lead government who suck Putin eggplant.
Before the dawn, the night is at it's darkest! Do not ever forget that when you stand in the middle of the long nigh, and no answer of when/if it ends, the darkness is all consuming, haunting, and the weak fall to dispair and willingness to sell out. Keep the torches lit, man the walls, and keep vanguard up. It is now, all the little things matter, in all things.

Its like.. 4-5 people in our congress who do, and one candidate who lost the last election and who is on trial for like a billion crimes. Most of the US government is totally onboard with slapping Putin down until the Russian people get their heads out of their *** and provide him a proper swan lake send-off. Just kinda sucks that the US government (like most governments) didn't really have a plan in place for 'absolutely insane people getting elected and roadblocking absolutely everything we're doing'. Get the Europeans to make catchup payments on their military spending for their own countries. Some weren't even reaching 1% !! Every single European country was just belittling the US for our military spending and calling us warmongers but they do enjoy leeching off the US. After they make catchup military spending for their own defense, the Europeans in the European Union should match the money the US allocates to Ukraine which should be somewhere around $75 billion last I remember. There's no reason why the EU, with a similar GDP as the US, should have sent less than half the amount says; they should be evenly matched 75 billion to 75 billion. Now Europeans are asking the US to continue financing the war when we want to spend our money on our society just like the Europeans did with their money that they should've used to match the defense spending of the US

I am in my 60s now and I follow any airing about NATO and now that my fears have been put to rest and my knowledge intensified my view is very favourable on NATO and its topics. Israel is not a NATO member. Was there a collective decision in NATO for the alliance countries to help Israel with weapons? Is there a protocol that NATO countries are arming Kyiv? After 50 years, how to read a history textbook? Did NATO countries make an individual decision to be indirectly present in these wars? Or was it a joint decision? Today no one knows how these conflicts will end. Today we can make sure that our descendants don’t rack their brains. (if Will there are any descendants).

If your country borders Russia neutrality is pure utopia. It means "Dear Russia, feel free to invade because nobody would help us to defend our lan". Eastern European countries owe Russia nothing because Russia in not Eastern Europe's master Russia always wants more of somebody else's land. Russia hates Nato because Russia can invade non Nato neighbours only. It is like blaming a victim for calling the police because countries around Russia doe not want to be hurt by Russia anymore. Eastern Europe is free. It is not Russia's buffer or backyard. War in Ukrane is not about Nato. Nato is an excuse. It is about Russia's greed. Nato stops Russia. Russia needs excuses to justify its sick ideas. Nato is not reason. It is an excuse.

Pytin could invade non Nato country only. Nato never invaded Russia. Russia did invade each of its euroean neighbour many times. If Ukraine had been in Nato Putin woould have never invaded Ukraine. Stop blaming others for looking for Nato protection. Russia is not a super power to demand anythng. Other country's pact choice is none of Russia's decission or bussines. Ask yourself why so many former Warsaw pact members joined Nato as quicly as they could. Russia is not a frendly neighbour, that is why. Russia never had any respect for Eastern Euroean countries and treated the as Russia's vassals. They were fed up and joined Nato to be safe.

Ukraine will run out of soldiers before Russia does no matter how much aid is provided them. Who do we defend next, Moldova? There's a reason nations sign mutual defense treaties between them. Ukraine was not and is not a NATO member nor did it have defense agreements with any other nation. Their loss -- unfortunate as it is -- should be held up as an example that predatory states like Russia and China must be countered through defense alliances.
