- It's in the shadow of the war in Ukraine that NATO marks its 75th anniversary. The alliance, while bigger than ever, is facing the biggest challenges since its inception: war on its borders and lingering questions about its future after the upcoming US election. But today was a day to show unity: At a meeting in Brussels, NATO vowed to keep supporting Ukraine's fight against Russia's invasion, promising membership… someday, somehow. Meanwhile, the Kremlin says its relations with NATO have reached the level of open confrontation and that there is zero communication between Moscow and the alliance.
For more on this, we talk to Jim Townsend. He spend decades working on European and NATO policy at the Pentagon and NATO itself. He's now an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security and joins us tonight from Paris.
We also speak with our Correspondents Teri Schultz at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels and Miodrag Soric in Riga. Our Moscow bureau moved there after Russia banned DW from reporting in the country.
And we talk to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

That's impossible with current tech
@@adabsurdum3314, Patriots can do it. They were developed with ICBM's in mind.
@@adabsurdum3314 Defense against an entire fleet of attacking missiles - and thus the much-vaunted "protective shield" - is (as of 2006) considered technically impossible. ... You mean like Reagan's " Star Wars " scheme ? ... Not only does the tech not exist - it's still beyond our practical capabilities, and it is prohibitively expensive. There was ALSO a concern that even if the technical and monetary problems can be overcome, the tracking systems could be thrown off by simple tricks, such as dispersing shredded metal foils in their path - don't forget, the timing would be a split-second decision.
And just putting all that hardware in space would be virtually impossible ... Elon Musk's " Starship " has been a spectacular failure so far !

Well, good things are coming from all of this, Norway will reach 2% GDP of spending this year, and by 2036 it should be at 3% GDP (announced today). And they are not alone in this heavy spending. So lets see, the weapon industry that is almost defunct in europe, is being rebuilt. Artillery/ammo and missile production is being ramped up across the european continent. And if we can get the 100Bn spening plan will work on some level, we can do this, even wihout a USA lead government who suck Putin eggplant.

For the record, the current US government absolutely does not 'suck Putin's eggplant'. Its like.. 4-5 people in our congress who do, and one candidate who lost the last election and who is on trial for like a billion crimes. Most of the US government is totally onboard with slapping Putin down until the Russian people get their heads out of their *** and provide him a proper swan lake send-off. Just kinda sucks that the US government (like most governments) didn't really have a plan in place for 'absolutely insane people getting elected and roadblocking absolutely everything we're doing'. For our US-based viewers, a vote for Trump will only result in continued Russian aggression. Putin won't stop until we are all allied and provide Ukraine with that which they need, and so deserve. When Ukraine agreed to disarm its nuclear capabilities, the US promised retention of its democracy. This promise needs to be upheld, in the name of global democracy
Get the Europeans to make catchup payments on their military spending for their own countries. Some weren't even reaching 1% !! Every single European country was just belittling the US for our military spending and calling us warmongers but they do enjoy leeching off the US. After they make catchup military spending for their own defense, the Europeans in the European Union should match the money the US allocates to Ukraine which should be somewhere around $75 billion last I remember. There's no reason why the EU, with a similar GDP as the US, should have sent less than half the amount says; they should be evenly matched 75 billion to 75 billion. Now Europeans are asking the US to continue financing the war when we want to spend our money on our society just like the Europeans did with their money that they should've used to match the defense spending of the US

If Germany had pulled its weight instead of getting itself in reliance on Russian gas Putin would not have been in bolden to invade as he did. Deterrence works Hope Germany has got the message!
The rest of Europe is also to blame for this. Historical reasons of course for not wishing Germany to ramp up and as pacifism also saves money... you guess the rest. We definitely don't need a person with an Russian name telling us this

Well, let’s have a confrontation then ey. Nobody is afraid of Russia.
Until the mushroom clouds. Then you have about 2 seconds to piss your pants.
@@jonathanjacob5453 Come on now, Russia cant use nukes on a NATO country without receiving nukes in retaliation. Everyone involved loses, big time. So there is no point in using them, by Russia or NATO. I dont really think eve Putin is crazy enough to essentially nuke his own country, because that is exactly what would happen if Russia nukes a NATO country.
Mushrooms. Don't smoke 'm, don't eat them.
Happy birthday NATO!!! ✨🎂💪❤
NATO was founded to counter Soviet expansionism. The Soviet Union was disbanded. Why did NATO stay? And not just stayed but even started to join more countries to itself…
Russia. Russia. You forgot Russia.
@@thysonsacclaim Russia didn’t have any expansionism at least before 2008 yet NATO was expanding!

Ukraine broke the agreement to stay neutral and they are calling Russia aggressor after they attacked. Really? 😂
Russbot detected
Ukraine's pact choice is none of Russia's decission and Russia broke every sinle agreement with Ukraine before (Budapest Memorandum included) utin wants Ukraine and he hates Nato because he can not invade Nato member states. Nato is an excuse for Putin's greed. Russia invaded Ukraine, not the opposite.
Ukraine gave up it's nuclear weapons in Russia's agreement to perpetually respect their borders. Russia is the aggressor. Always has been.
@@IrrationalCharm answer me with facts or you are lacking them?
@@bonnie7898 right, there was no agreement on Ukrainian neutrality and only an intention in the constitution.
But these are actually the main problems ! They should have found a real legal foundation and a credible living of their "neutrality" - and they would not have been invaded ...
If NATO is defensive bloc why did invade Iraq Libya?
Iraq was an international coalition of the willing, not a NATO action, and Lybia was part of a UN mandate.
Why did Iraq invade half of the middle east in 1990 did you forget to mention that ?? plus heaps of other countries
@@user-tz2ch1im3r Iraq was used by the U.S. to attack Iran the U.S. in another war.
If Ruzzia is a confident state with a powerful military... why does it feel constantly threatened by smaller neighbors such as Ukraine, Georgia...
If Ruzzia isn't afraid of NATO... why does it exclusively attack nations that aren't part of it
If Ruzzia believes some regions of a country have to right to secede... why did they not accept Chechnya's independence ? Causing 2 bloody wars in the process...
You will have plenty of time to think about it when Russia will be occupied for 50 years.

There never was an agreement to not expand Nato. Russia tried to negotiate this, but then fell for the billions of Western aid to prevent total collapse of the old USSR. Aid that for a substantial portion disappeared in the pockets of guess who. Do you see the problem?

...amid a rising Russian threat caused by NATO.
NATO isnt a threat. For example, Russia go into Ukraine its war between those countrys. Who is. the winner? Its none, and absolutely never Russia.
NATO does not want to recreate the russian empire.
If NATO wanted peace they would have left a belt of neutral states around Russia. If you consider someone a threat you distance yourself, not seek for confrontation when warned multiple times. That’s all I have to say…
If your country borders Russia neutrality is pure utopia. It means "Dear Russia, feel free to invade because nobody would help us to defend our lan". Eastern European countries owe Russia nothing because Russia in not Eastern Europe's master Russia always wants more of somebody else's land. Russia hates Nato because Russia can invade non Nato neighbours only. It is like blaming a victim for calling the police because countries around Russia doe not want to be hurt by Russia anymore. Eastern Europe is free. It is not Russia's buffer or backyard. War in Ukrane is not about Nato. Nato is an excuse. It is about Russia's greed. Nato stops Russia. Russia needs excuses to justify its sick ideas. Nato is not reason. It is an excuse.
Putin invaded Ukraine because he wants Ukraine and he does not consider it to be a real country. Ukraine is not even Nato memebr and had no chance to join. Pytin could invade non Nato country only. Nato never invaded Russia. Russia did invade each of its euroean neighbour many times. If Ukraine had been in Nato Putin woould have never invaded Ukraine. Stop blaming others for looking for Nato protection. Russia is not a super power to demand anythng. Other country's pact choice is none of Russia's decission or bussines. Ask yourself why so many former Warsaw pact members joined Nato as quicly as they could. Russia is not a frendly neighbour, that is why. Russia never had any respect for Eastern Euroean countries and treated the as Russia's vassals. They were fed up and joined Nato to be safe.

For the sake of journalistic ethics, can DW bring people with different perspectives to the war in Ukraine? It is so boring listening to one sided view points.
All these channels are used for their own propagandas, they can't call someone with different perspectives. the world need to be awaked!!
Ukraine will run out of soldiers before Russia does no matter how much aid is provided them. Who do we defend next, Moldova? There's a reason nations sign mutual defense treaties between them. Ukraine was not and is not a NATO member nor did it have defense agreements with any other nation. Their loss -- unfortunate as it is -- should be held up as an example that predatory states like Russia and China must be countered through defense alliances.
I would like to see Morocco being part of NATO
Morocco is already a major non-NATO ally - which is an official title that affords it closer access, integration and NATO weapons procurement.
After 75 years we need NATO more than ever. We must stay strong and support Ukraine for all our freedom and democracy
