  • When Den of Thieves came out, I all of a sudden was bombarded with messages from social media asking what was my take on the movie. I did not understand why until someone told me they were portraying Marine Raiders from MARSOC. Being a former Marine Raider myself I decided to weigh in on what I thought of the movie.

    I trained in Pendleton with my Trailer Platoon in 2001 and LA Sherriff's SEAT team came and used our live-fire shoot house for CQB training because one of the deputies was a Reconnaissance SNCO who had transitioned to USMCR. He used his USMC active duty ties to bring his whole team to the RECON/SOC/STG training area. They were very capable.

  • @nvsnake1489

    I thought the same thing. A Marine Raider team would cut down any law enforcement unit until the national guard or some other heavily armed force shows up to overwhelm them by numbers. I hate the sound of that match up but let's be real.

    • @MrTangent

      NV SNAKE I think a decent sized city (like LA) with a SWAT team could neutralize a group of MARSOC guys. Heavy loses, maybe, but large city SWAT teams are no joke. There’s also the FBI SWAT & HRT, that might be available, and again, heavily trained.

    • @nvsnake1489
      @nvsnake1489 5 лет назад +78

      @@MrTangent A SWAT team could definitely present a challenge but they are not neutralizing a Raider Team. You watched the video right? MARSOC have far more training and greater combat experience. Also too, Raider Teams have equipment that even a SWAT team might not have like a SAW MG, M203, AT4s (rocket launchers), mines etc. HRT has a better chance since most members are former military and often served in a Special Operations Force. I've seen SWAT guys train. Most of the time, they have Air Force and Navy backgrounds, some no military background at all. LA's SWAT sees action for sure but it is not the same as real combat overseas when Raider Teams are often outnumbered and pinned down by RPGs, mortars, and heavy automatic MG fire.

      @@michaelturner224 In reference to the film, the so called Raider Team had a SAW, automatic weapons, explosives and other sophisticated equipment needed for the heist. If they were able to obtain these items then it isn't hard to believe they could get other military grade equipment if they wanted to. If someone suggests a SWAT team has ex Rangers/SEALS or SF members than you're basically talking about SOF vs SOF and this whole thread went spiraling into a shitty debate. It seems no one really knows anything about MARSOC in general and what they are capable of.

      A good majority of the police officers involved with SWAT or any other “Special Unit” of that caliber come from military backgrounds such as Army (SF, or Rangers) Marines etc. so I think it’s safe to say they can hold their own against Marine Raiders (or anyone for that matter) normal street cops on the other hand, that’s a different story...and even then some of those guys are vets too so they’re no stranger to taking fire!

    For years there have been movies trying to be a better version of the movie Heat. I have yet to see it.
    Also, being in law enforcement myself for over 13 years I have to agree with you. In an all out shootout the Marine raider team or pretty much any other tier one/tier two special operations team would have the upper hand
    However, if your a competent investigator you would know better then to engage them in a blunt force way. Generally, people have weak points in a 24 hour period. In a real life scenario once LE has identified and located the bad guys, knowing full well that it would be a bloodbath in a shootout, they would spend countless hours conducting surveillance, hoping to catch a time when they spent a night partying before they all pass out at 5am drunk. The idea is to move in at those times. Not to get in a shootout in a traffic jam with innocent people sitting in cars directly in the line of fire.
    But then again, that would make for a boring movie LoL

      I fully concur that the big shootout in Heat is the gold standard of movie firefights. The technical advisor for that scene was a former British SAS operator and he taught Val and the boys all about maneuvering toward the cops and laying down suppressive fire. Also, the speed and dexterity with which Val switches magazines is used in actual training by the Marines.

      Little late to this but I would guess any law enforcement outfit especially local law enforcement would try to have a shit ton of officers Cordon off the area and slowly close in. Would not be logical to send in a small group of minimally trained cops if you know your suspects are a Team if Special Operations guys who have spent years in gun fights who also have a fucking m249 SAW lol That said I give people to the Cops who still put their lives on the line regardless

    I agree street level police dont get enough training in team tactics. It has bumped up alot since the Columbine massacre and even more so after Virginia Tech, San Bernardino, Cicis pizza Las Vegas and of course October 1st massacre in Las Vegas.
    Police are getting Mactac and alerrt techniques mostly carried over straight from SF teams with a decade of combat experience. The down side....if a marson team went head to head with the cops they helped train....marines will win most likely (if they use frags lol) in a long projected fight though....cops will win by sheer numbers and air support and robots strapped with C4 (like what they used in Dallas)

    A police unit would be in trouble with any military unit, special forces community or not. Thank the lord that most military vets are pro law enforcement, or at least tolerate police. I wish we could train tactics more often but we cannot. Budget, time, and over working normal duties lead to lazy and untrained police. Some, who recognize the issue, work together in their free time but it still is not enough. I'm lucky to be in a small specialized unit so we do train together more then the rest of the department. A lot of guys show up to work and pray nothing happens while they are on duty. I can say this a pray I never end up in a situation against a trained unit of military guys because I'm in trouble. 10 plus years as LEO

    okay just saw this flick ... Nick got me curious ... it was a cool flick that's all I'll say to not give anything away ... however, the one scene that caught my attention and I thought was epic was when the boyfriend came to pick up the daughter. The trip into the garage was outstanding! When my daughter brought her first boy friend home I had my 125 lbs Malamute (whose head was the size of basketball) give him the sniff down - I thought this guy almost pissed himself, but this scene that takes the cake!

    Always wonder who they get as advisors and how quick those advisors quit.

    • @agmsmith4079
      @agmsmith4079 5 лет назад +10

      The problem is, to hollywood a Military advisor is a military advisor... so you might get a former Army Ranger advising actors who are playing MARSOC Marines...
      Plus in the case of this movie... Military advisors’ roles usually focus on the physical movements and actions. They usually don’t have military advisors for the script itself.
      For example, my cousin graduated West Point and went into the Night stalkers (160 SOAR) and was a Blackhawk pilot. His team and aircraft were sent by the army to Morocco to for the filming of Black Hawk Down. He is the pilot of the lead Blackhawk in all of the shots of the helicopters flying...
      But!!! The movie had several military consultants on the film (none of the guys from the 160th were considered advisors. They were there just to fly the blackhawks). While shooting the director was trying to get one of the actors to record the distress call written into the script. My cousin happened to be sitting there... all the advisors had no problem with the actor’s performance because none of them were Blackhawk pilots. My cousin quietly mentioned to the AD “that’s not how a Blackhawk pilot would report one of his team going down”... so the AD approached the director... the director came up to my cousin... and my cousin started coaching the actor... but for whatever reason the actor couldn’t get the intensity... so they recorded my cousin saying “mayday, mayday, Blackhawk down” through the coms system in his Blackhawk and that is what you hear in the film. My cousin had to sign all these releases to allow them to use it and his performance is uncredited...
      But it shows how a military advisor to hollywood is just a military advisor and a lot of times they get the specifics wrong because their training and field of service was different from what the movie needs...
      That is why movies like Lone Survivor end up being so good and realistic... for Lone Survivor they had Marcus personally train the actors and oversee the film shooting.
      If anyone veterans are interested in getting into military consulting/advising for films, you should start with groups like Veterans In Film and Television (VFT) and US Veterans’ Artists Alliance (USVAA). It really helps if you live in or near LA. There are also companies that the studios go to, to find vetted military advisors like Musa Military Entertainment Consulting, Force 1, and others.
      One thing I always hear military advisors say to younger guys is “go to film school”. So that could also be another place to start. Having knowledge of how films are made is essential for being an advisor so taking film classes can help a lot. Plus when you start out you will be doing a lot of student and low budget indie films to gain experience, so if you are in film school you will be “the guy” for all the student projects. It’s like what Michael Giacchino did as a composer. He wanted to score films so instead of going to music school he went to film school and was literally the only composer surrounded by aspiring film makers. He ended up scoring all the student films and making friends with EVERYONE! And it let to a lot of work for him after they all graduated. Google him and you can see some of the films he has done (lots of huge blockbusters).
      Also there are a lot of other careers in film/tv that vets go into a lot... most armorers/weapons specialists for film/tv are veterans, most Prop masters usually tend to be vets, and of course a lot of the pyrotechnic/explosives experts on set are former vets.
      I met a navy demolitions/ordinance guy at a gun range outside LA a couple months ago and he was saying after he gets out he wants to go into film/tv. I forget what his exact title was but he said he basically builds all different types of bombs and explosives for the navy. He did naval mines, depth charges, anti ship explosives packages for seals, etc... he said you name it, he builds it... and he was saying there is a lot of demand for people like him in hollywood. I could see that. Think of all the controlled explosions that happen on set, not just action movies either... car crash explosions, house fire explosions, etc.
      Anyway... from what I’ve been told, it is very competitive for military advisors. But who cares!!! If you are interested you should go for it! Follow your dreams, because if you don’t someone else will!
      That has always been my motto... and now (and for the past 17 years) I get to wake up and make music for a living (I make/produce music for TV and Film). It doesn’t even feel like a real job! Hahaha carpe diem!

      Agm Smith its total b.s. he didn't get any creditidation for his contributions in BHD. It speaks volumes about Ridley Scott and team. Is he at least listed as "Pilot 1" in the end credits?

    • @agmsmith4079
      @agmsmith4079 5 лет назад

      Joe Butta ... as far as I know he couldn’t. I’ll check. Because he was there on behalf of the Army I don’t know if he could be listed. Also he was active duty in the 160th at the time so that could also be why they didn’t list them and just thanked the army in general I. The credits Maybe some of the paperwork he filled out was a Taft Hartley agreement, I don’t know. I’ll ask him when I see him over Christmas.
      But, it’s also very common to not get credits in films. Most of the tv shows I mix the scores for I don’t get credit for in the credit scroll. They just credit the composers I work for. Unless you are in the union it is very hard to get an onscreen credit.

Marines whether grunt or Raider are trained to bring the hate mission oriented, to where the cops would have to hesitate due to the civilians in harms way. Also why not hire former or active Marines to play roles with limited lines in order to at least make it seem more genuine? Decent movie though good twist etc.

    I’m a former Marine, not MARSOC, but Marine. And, I’m a ex cop, now 100% disabled veteran. Law enforcement isn’t nearly as tactically trained as infantry marines. Law enforcement has a job to do, training is secondary and it costs a city a lot of money for occasional training in criminal law and procedure and a myriad of other things, let alone tactical, infantry type tactics. Since the columbine shooting in ‘99, there’s been an effort to train patrol for active shooter scenarios, since they will be the first ones on scene. SWAT (sit, wait, and talk) usually takes a good hour or more to assemble, brief, and get on scene. By then everyone is dead, including the shooter. Again, the hours, and days of military style training doesn’t exist. Law enforcement gets some basic stuff, and they can opt out of taking action because there is no law that requires the police to risk their lives, believe it or not. I’ve worked with officers who have said, this is good overtime, regarding the training, but they aren’t gonna enter a building with an active shoot and get shot. They said they’d wait for SWAT. And that shows there’s a different mentality as well. I’m not knocking my former career and the men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting the public, but they aren’t warriors.

    Great review of the movie. Living on the east coast and in an area where Marine Raiders live and shoot local competitions I will say this in regards to your statement about law enforcement. Majority of law enforcement would not be able to handle a group of guys with small unit tactics and planning. However, if we are talking about squared away law enforcement officers/swat team guys that have the same type of “fire power” they are more than capable of holding their own against a couple of special operation guys. Of course there would be casualties on both sides but there are teams out there capable of handling these type of incidents. I’ve shot plenty of competitions against Marine Raiders in the area and there are some super squared away guys and others that can’t shoot any better than your AVERAGE officer. I understand a comp is not the same as reacting to contact but it would be foolish to think there are no LE teams out there that can’t hold their own.

    Thanks for the video man. You echoed my thoughts (which means I got lucky). In reference to the L.E. guys being able to hold their own against the marsoc guys, there are two things I think the movie hoped(?) we would assume. #1 the cops were such low-lifes who enjoyed the action so much, they had put in much more time on trigger and learning tactics than most cops #2 the cops were all prior military also...? Otherwise (and it pains me to say it being prior law enforcement myself) the cops had a snowball’s chance in hell

    This movie was Heat meets Extreme Justice (Lou Diamond Phillips movie with Scott Glenn). Those movies are similar because in Heat you had criminals who were very skilled as well. In Extreme Justice you had cops that acted very much like criminals.

    Thank GOD you said , the moment I saw the shoot out seen and saw that they lost , I was like there is no way on this earth a police department is going to win against a marsoc team or any specialized teams , ever ....ever . And honestly I believe they were using way to much rounds , I would imagined they would’ve tried to conserve ammo

    Question: How often are raiders on full auto? As an 0311 I RARELY went full auto unless I was firing a machine gun or in the prone with an IAR. There was only one occasion when I was on full auto and standing, it was not an ammo dump ;)

    As a Marine and a L.E.O. I can say some units do get pretty high speed training, so maybe the S.O. guys, since they are part of a small unit in a well funded agency, It is, IMHO that they would be a force to reckon with. I dunno, good review, I think this is one of my favorite action movies.

    Given the fact they were bank robbers, not only would identifying them as MARSOC Raiders be the accurate label but it is also more fitting than FAST team.

    The only thing I can add to the review is that Sheriff taskforce is loosely based on the LAPD SIS. Which has been rumored to be composed of former JSOC dudes. So in my head, that would make more sense than the rogue detective gang they ended up with.

    They took the most memorable parts of movies like Heat and The Usual Suspects with none of the subtlety of those classic films. I saw the "twist" from a mile off once I saw the resemblance to other classic crime movies. I think it deserves the critical score of 5/10.

    Pablo Schreiber played Chris "Tanto" Paronto in 13 Hours which the real Chris Paronto , John Tiegen, and Mark Geist were military/tactical advisers on I believe. Maybe Mr. Schreiber was able to take some of that knowledge to the set of Den of Thieves. Any thoughts or insight on that Nick Koumalatsos?
