Thanks for a good honest review Marek. I've been driving my i30 diesel for the last 5 years and it's has impressed me with its reliability, economy and practicality. I also think it's more stylish than the new model which looks more like a Peugeot 308 to me. However the good news is that Hyundai are launching a 5 door fastback version of the i30 next year.....now that should be worth waiting for👍.
In North America, the i30 is called the Elantra GT and is assembled in South Korea. I bought one in 2019. It comes in the three trim and feature models. I chose the middle with a 2-litre gas engine and an automatic transmission. It was about $CAN 24K including back up camera, cross-traffic warning and blind-spot warning and satellite radio. I will agree with Marek on most points but I must keep the driving style on "eco" as otherwise, the 2-litre engine roars like a sports car. The fuel consumption is not as good as our previous Toyota Corolla but drives and sounds much better. I think it's a keeper.
The more critical you are you will be more taken in consideration by wiewers and car companies alike. Keep up the good work. At least one Romanian watches you
The I30 is meant to be a direct competitor to the golf. Here in Aus it gets 5year warranty and the top spec version is definatley the one to go for. With the golf plagued with reliability issues badge sometimes isn't everything.
Sorry to correct you, Simon, but the driver in that terrible accident was driving a manual. The Victorian coroner ruled there were no systematic safety faults with the Volkswagen Golf.
Good discussion. I agree that their diesel scandal and their follow up was a corporate disgrace, but that doesn't make their cars any more or less reliable. Granted, their corporate drama is enough for most people to steer clear of them but I don't think these cars are any more or less reliable than other cars. Ford, for example, is subject to a class action over their apalling Powershift transmissions in the Focus that they haven't acknowledged.
It seems like my SX4 experience when I learned driving. 1st gear, low rev, sqrt(2) meter/year speed, press brakes lightly, aaaand seatbelt catches me from flying out of the window.
I just started working for a fleet company that deals with these new i30s & Golf... yeh Golf's are light years nicer inside but I'd bet my home the Hyundai will have a lifetime of trouble free ownership unlike the the latter. Heck some of the new Amarok V6s I drive fresh from the yard have problems starting or even die en route to the holding yard.
smell ???? there is no smell in my i 30 !!! are you sure you didnt step on some ....lol... by the way 15.500 euros entry level on 1.4 mpi( GREECE )Pretty descent price ,for a descent car that is not promising more that can give....like Golf...
Good review Marek! I have to say my favourite hot-hatch (sub-hyper hatches, e.g. RS3/A45/M140i/Golf R) is the BMW 125i w/ M-Sport package. Much like the Golf GTI I found it to have a nice blend of comfort and sportiness. I was tossing up between the Clubman JCW, 125i, Golf GTI and 308 GTi and went with a 125i myself. The new Megane RS looks tasty in some of the new reviews though. As a bonus I purchased my 125i with a few options for less than an equivalent Golf GTI here in Australia!
You didn't mentionned the infamous 5 years warranty and illimited mileage, which is THE argument that would help people choose this one over a Pug or a VW.And the station wagon looks very promising too.
Your right Marek about different cars smells. My family has bought quite a few Renaults and they have always had a very strong new car smell that stayed around for a long time. Where as my grand parents Mercedes a class smell was more subtle and didn't last as long.
Is a good reliable car with a good price (14.500e in greece for the basic 1.4 gassoline edition) with 5 years of warranty and service every 2 years or 30.000 km i can't find anything comparable.
Excellent work, Marek. Definitely a whiff of Golf about the styling, but I don't think people will pay the Golf price tag. Interestingly, when I looked at buying an i20, massive discounts were being offered before I'd barely sat down, so I guess the same will apply and it'll actually work out much better value.
Here in the U.S.A., a GT Sport trim will be available with 1.6T 201 HP and 7spd.DCT. That version will also have a multi-link rear suspension. Waiting to hear what reviewers will report on that trim which is due to arrive sometime this summer.
Thank you for the great review, Marek. I've been driving 1.4L petrol + manual gearbox I30 for past 4 years. Over 120,000 km, the average (as measured by fueling up to the top each time) fuel consumption is 6.5 l/100 km. This the most frugal car I ever had pleasure of driving. And with 0 issues it is quite reliable as well. Now, according to your review, the new car is more fun to drive, has better steering and suspension. The only thing I don't remember you mentioning is noise insulation. Is it any better than the old car? All in all - should I need/decide/have to replace my car, I'll be sure to give new I30 a very good chance.
Are the brakes good or are they over-assisted? Because in the Ford C-Max 1.5 Ecoboost you need so little force to slam your face on the steering wheel, but they are hard to modulate and the pedal travel is stupidly long.
I have rented one in france and I can say the brakes are superb. I had several occassions where I had so slam the brakes and it jolts to a halt in very a controlled manner (it was france after all).
brand appeal .....brand appeal ....... nope!!! just a good car made by anyone and with good pricing and i am in my argument is look at what Peugeot made in the past sure they woke up now but brand appeal ,,,,don't give a toss about that
It seems the i30 tries to much to be a Golf. If the i30 would be considerably cheaper, i would go with it, but as they are similarly priced I personally would always go with the Golf.
Oh dear, BIG mistake, so ugly compared to the last generation... and the front just looks wrong, like an afterthought and stuck on.... what were they thinking???
You possess a great mixture of sass and competency. You put out entertaining and informative videos that are fun to watch.
One of the best car reviewers on YT!!!!!!!!!!!!

yea, 30mm lower (5mm lower to the ground) and 15% stiffer suspension... and its gonna cost more for sure.

What sort of reliability issues?
Marek Drives The golf has alot of Dual clutch transmission issues mainly. The i30 is great. Be good to see the N when you get a chance to test that.

Cieszę się, że ktoś zauważył :)

But it stinks :)
Nice t-shirt, much better to look at than the car

Drop a fiver, and this will be great value.

Thank you.
i30 1.4 turbo is fantastic
What consumption for 1.4 100cp?
Hyundai have made a halo model for the i30 available later, the i30 N edition. Gives the competitors something to think about at least.
Thank you for the great review, Marek. I've been driving 1.4L petrol + manual gearbox I30 for past 4 years. If I didn't mention it, it's because there's nothing to say. Average.
Understood! Thanks!

It's not gonna get "fixed". Manufacturers simply don't change stuff like that after release. Frankly I'm not even sure they can.
I have rented one in france and I can say the brakes are superb. I had several occassions where I had so slam the brakes and it jolts to a halt in very a controlled manner (it was france after all).
interesting review. up there with a golf ? ok but as good as a golf ? hmm not so sure
Hyundai is the next Toyota.
hyundai Honda with mistake... lol
Doesn't get the heart racing, but will sell to loyal Hyundai people who like piece of mind.
Same it looks to much like Golf/308.
brand appeal .....brand appeal ....... nope!!! just a good car made by anyone and with good pricing and i am in
my argument is look at what Peugeot made in the past sure they woke up now but brand appeal ,,,,don't give a toss about that
Nice looking car though maybe lacks a bit of character, the i30n is a lot better though out of my price range.
It's a nice car but a few 1000€ too expensive to be successful
It seems the i30 tries to much to be a Golf. If the i30 would be considerably cheaper, i would go with it, but as they are similarly priced I personally would always go with the Golf.
The front looks like a tapir. I like the previous version much more.
hsyetkin new fastback version of the i30 arrives in 2018 with coupe like styling, just like the previous version👍
Badge appeal & shit (sorry). My pocket has the most appeal.
I really cant see the beauty on this car honestly i believe the previus model was prettier than this thing...
Looks like a way cheaper car than it is. Probably the interior drags it down.
Fart eastern sweatshop.........?
I can't help but think Fiat Tipo every time I see the new i30... Its that ugly!
Are you kidding? Tipo looks like a distant, poor relative of the I30.
all I can say is cheap cheap cheap
hondai always copy other cars... interior- fiesta, exterior Peugeot 308...
Oh dear, BIG mistake, so ugly compared to the last generation... and the front just looks wrong, like an afterthought and stuck on.... what were they thinking???
Well, everyone can have their own opinions. For me, the front is the prettiest.
