I drive a 1.5t Sport plus. Average fuel consumption is 6.7l/100km combined and 6.0l on highway with cruise control set to 150km/h. I drive over 600km with one tank. I have had so far two earlier Civics, an Accord, a Prelude, a CR-V and an FR-V and it is far the best among them. Maybe only the Prelude had a similar fun to drive as this new Civic. I recommend it for anyone who loves sporty japanese cars.
I have, my friend, Honda Civic Type S of 2008... I bought it in 2009. So many years and its still like brand new... Except from the look what are the most important differences between those models? I am asking because i have seen from close red Civic with 1.5 engine and i was with my mouth open...
i’m testdriving 1,5 turbo now in Iceland (thinking to buy) and get easily 0-100 km around 7 sec. You have to take the traction control off and drive in S mode. Amazing car to drive fast... specaly around fast corners, and when you drive “normal drive” you are driving around 50 km faster than everybody without trying :)
Páll Sigurðsson hi bro where u driving here in Iceland more than 90? :) Did u bought this car finally? It can be a problem with this low suspension 129 mm on winter time i guess
Try taking it out of Eco mode when you accelerate. That should help a bit. The green tree on the left of the speedometer means the economy mode is activated.

I like it so much that I bought one two weeks ago. Very spacious and has a big booth, good for those who dont want a van. Its more expensive than the competition but it offers equipment as standard that you hould have to pay extra to have in other brands.
Civic is my actual realistic "dream" car with a manual gearbox. Unfortunately no station wagon is available (2 kids). I consider to buy one even with the 1.0 T petrol. I know - that is a different level of dynamics - but still could be enough for my moderate driving style. I really like this car.
For the money this car is way fast enough. 0-60mph 7.5 and 0-100mph 18.0. This is about as quick as a fiesta ST give or take. Problem with the type r is that you just never get to wring it out if you live in a city, they are way too quick and essentially uneconomic for casual driving. I just wish that car makers would make their junior hot hatches look like a hot hatch because I dont want to spend 30k to look sporty.
I have bought one. It is the 1.0 lt CVT Executive (everything but the leather seats) and as strange as it sounds, I find it fast enough (130 hp)! I particularly like the stiffness of the chassis, the precision of the wheel, the EDC-like CVT (nothing to do with the past), the almost semi-autonomous driving on the highway (this is the only car in this class than can keep lanes, accelerate, decelerate and even stop and restart, all on its own), the intelligent speed limiter (follows speed signs by combining sign recognition with speed limiter; extremely useful where I drive) and the active dampers (never has a problem with any kind of corner or bad driving). However, I did the mistake of reading the US manual before getting the car (a 670 page affair). And I discovered that the European version is missing stuff. Namely: 1) Walk away auto lock: even though the car has the keyless access, it does not auto lock when one walks away with the key fob on him. To lock the car, you have to either press the button on the fob or the button on the door handle. This feature is clearly explained in the U.S. manual but is totally absent (the relevant pages are missing) in the German one and the relevant options are not present in the Honda Connect U.I. This feature is very convenient, is present in numerous modern cars with keyless entry and I don't understand why it is absent in the Civic. 2) Drive off auto lock: again, the feature of auto locking the car when reaching a certain speed is not present, either in the German manual or the U.I. I consider this an important security feature, which is present in many modern cars. 3) Auto headlight sensitivity adjustment: this feature is again absent from the manual and the U.I. The headlights do come on and go off automatically, as do the auto high-beam, but there is no adjustment of the sensitivity possible (and they are too sensitive for my taste). 4) Remote engine start button on key fob: This is again missing from the European model and is very very handy in cold mornings. 5) Panic button on key fob: this is again a handy feature (to find your car) which is present in the U.S. car but missing from the European car. 6) Small tray in the center console: although the center console is very large and handy, it only has the big tray. The very handy small tray is missing. I don't understand why Honda would remove this small tray, which is very cheap, on a car priced 29000 euro that has other very expensive features. 7) Turbo meter: Although the car does have a turbo engine, this display is missing from the MID for the 1.0 lt. engine (apparently it is present in the 1.5 lt engine version). Again, this seems silly and cheap for such an expensive car. Contacting Honda and the dealer did not produce any explanation or possibility to activate, at least the first two. Overall, very satisfied, but also very annoyed at this small silly stuff.
1. Walk away auto lock is one of the most annoying features IMO (hate Renault's auto-lock feature, I always disable it. 2. True, Japanese cars in general seem to be missing this feature in Europe. US requirement maybe? 3. EU homologation I supposed. 4. Not present in Europe, except for typically American cars, like the Camaro. European manufacturers sometimes offer remote start via mobile app, but even this is only for a minute or so, because in some countries idling the car for longer periods is not allowed. And you shouldn't do it anyway, because it damages the engine. You're supposed to turn the engine on, give it 10-20 seconds, and drive off. Otherwise it won't reach optimum temperature. 5. Some auto alarm systems have this feature. 6. I'll have to look at some US spec Civic reviews. 7. Yes, 1.5 has it. You just have to click through the menu.
Dear Marek. Thank you very much for replying and for looking it up. I regard point 1 as very handy and 2 as an important security feature. I think that they are disabled through software in Europe, but I haven't been able to find out why or how to enable them. My efforts through Honda DE and my dealer were fruitless. I would very much like to activate these in my Civic. Can you ask if this is possible through your connections to Honda and Co? For the remote engine start, it is very handy in winter and if Honda sees no problem to have it in US, why would Europe be different? Same for panic button. Very handy. About the price of the car, I did the pricing exercise with many brands and I found that most were more expensive than the Civic with the same options! I can list the following: Mazda, Toyota, Subaru, Renault, Peugeot and of' course the luxury ones, Volvo, Audi, BMW and Merc. You must take care to include all the options though. Keep up the good work, you're one of my favorite car journalists! I particularly like your pointy humor!
@iwolffy: I agree that in Germany the cars are generally a bit more expensive. But take care that it is a comparable version with exactly the same equipment included. I've read that in "poor"' markets Honda provides trims that have less equipment, in order to offer the car cheaper. For example, in Greece the 1.5lt CVT "Sport" version, which is their top one, is 27150 Euro. But it is not the same as the German Sport version, which is 29260 Euro. And also have in mind that on top of these German prices, it is quite easy to get a discount between 11% and 13%, plus additional promotions and "gifts". The 29310 that I mentioned for my car was the retail price. I can't reveal what was the end price, but it was quite a bit less than that. But all this depends on the dealer, local Honda promotions and "gifts".
A CVT pretending to be a planetary automatic is defeating the whole point of a CVT. Like you said, in a Honda, stick with the manual, they're wonderful. Great review as always
@iwolffy: If I am not mistaken, you have a U.S. version. I remember reading somewhere that the European ones have a different CVT, with programming and response specially made for the European market, in order to make it more like an EDC. This because apparently U.S. is more used to CVT, while the Europeans are more used to EDC and manuals. So, maybe there is a substantial difference between what you experience and what I do. I have been driving since 1985, both manuals and automatics and I can tell you, this CVT was one of the main reasons that I bought the car.
Nice review man, i have the civic 1.6 idtec, the suspension is very rigid ...anyway i noticed that you don't really talk about reliability in none of your videos, the latter is the reason why i bought a Honda
If you have the magic seats, you have to trade off suspension for a torsion beam type which everybody slated. You can’t have both. I would rather trade off magic fold down seats and have independent rear suspension. I also know people who have changed from a Golf who love driving this latest Civic.
Idk If the engine displacements are different where you are from but in America it's definitely not a VTEC anymore unfortunately. It's just a 1.5 Earth dreams technology Turbo engine.
It's called VTEC Turbo. Earth Dreams Technology is just a Honda slogan they've been putting on the engine covers for some time. There's a plaque on this engine too ruclips.net/video/2WqJmK4uulg/видео.htmlm45s
The Civic is frustrating in the way you can only get leather in the 1.5 turbo engine with the highest spec. And I want a black leather interior more then I want stuff like start and stop or keyless entry. so yeah, I pay for things I don't really need ;)
To have Magic Seats you have to have the old crappy Torsion Beam suspension as in the previous 2 models of Civic. I would sacrifice that for proper suspension.
Hi Marek, nice reviews ! I watch every new episod in last year and a half, and well done ! I was thinking to ask you - is there any chnace to make new review for Reanult Kadjar. Last time when you've made review as I remember was test or "media model" so I wonder is there anything changed since then ? I will share my experiance in your review as one of Kadjar owners. No, I'm not planning another test (maybe when there is a facelift). If you want to share your opinion about the car with me and other viewers, you're more than welcome to do so, preferably in the comment section under the Kadjar review. I'm sure by now Kadjar is not as bad, as the test model I was given, but that's Renault's problem.
looks like all the dust in the universe gets stuck to the plastic controls, my OCD would be working overtime :) the trunk size was surprising, good review again. thanks marek
I have to agree on that. You sit very low and the feet are too high, even if you raise the seat to the top. It feels a bit like a cart and the front visibility is awful. Not that it is better with most modern sporty cars. You need to get a SUV for that.
True, felt like sitting in a pit :) Also the seats were not so comfy as the in the previous generation, i was comparing them side by side. Not sure why they messed up, but i wouldn't like to sit in this car for a longer trip. So yeah, i'm probably getting a SUV. The new Suzuki SX4 seems fun to drive, great visibility, comfortable, spacey and much cheaper. But i can also understand why somebody buys the civic, it looks really cool and the engines are great.

'Speed demon this car ain't' - Yes true when you drive it in ECO mode! - you shouldn't review cars if you don't take 20 minutes to learn the features of the car first. Turn OFF the ECO button.
What are u talking about dude!! I got mine new from honda cvt sport pack with all the extra except sunroof and leather seats coz I don't like them and it was 20.900 euros!! What car can u get with that money at this extras!!
The old one was based on the Fit/Jazz architecture - gas tank under the front seats. The new one is based on the new Civic/CRV/Accord platform - the gas tank is under the REAR seats.
0-100, in 8 seconds, is not fast. In india enthusiats would give and arm and leg to get a honda that can do 100 in 8 sec. Look how the market has been categorized to milk money.
Nothing against the CVT, Honda builds fantastic lawn mowers: images.cdn.circlesix.co/image/2/1200/630/5/uploads/memes/lawnmower-stance-53b1d719398c0.jpg But seriously these CVTs that pretend to up and downshift are completely senseless because everything that makes a CVT so efficient is abandoned. But yeah, companies will build whatever sells.
Well, I'll have to disagree. I was also very skeptic about the CVT, but the new ones from Honda and Toyota are much improved. Civic's in particular offers very big flexibility and in reality 4 different modes. Eco CVT is slow and efficient, little better than the old one. Normal CVT looks more like an EDC, downshifting more the faster you press the accelerator. S mode (Sport or Slope), downshifts even more, to provide torque and engine brake. And manual mode (S mode + Paddles) emulates a 7-speed manual gearbox quite well. It really provides a lot of flexibility, but you have to learn how to operate it. It is not very easy. For "lazy" people, the manual version is simpler. But with the manual, you loose a lot of automation in the driver-assistance systems.
archangelhorus To be honest, I never drove a CVT and I'm totally open to it. I just can't resist lawn mower jokes when it comes to Honda. What you say sounds interesting and I'd love to give it a try one day.
Hey guy, nice open mind from you. I just can tell my experience. Starting froma NOWAY option reg the CVT I gave it a try...well guess what? I found a totally different world apart from thetraditional CVTs. Dont know why and how but these new tricks make it sooo damn responsive. To recap: I bought one :-))

phixion lol, Honda don't make a 1.8 Turbo, the new Civic has either 1.0 or 1.5 Turbo engines or an old carry over 1.8NA. I think you'll find the new 1.5T kicks out quite a bit more performance than you're VW 1.4T
Mark Atkinson maybe not, but this was 6 or so years ago so I forget the specifics. I know it was a top end engine in their standard civic line. I test drove it right before a VW Golf 1.4 TSI and the Golf put out way more power. your btw not you're.
DIsappointing car unfortunately. I've had the 1.0 Civic for two years. In that time, the turbo charger went out twice and 2 weeks ago, the timing belt snapped which destroyed the engine. This will be the last Honda I purchase.

Americans. That's who.
Octavian Mihai Patrascoiu așa e Mihai, ăștia nu stiu sentimentul de a schimba vitezele la Civic
Octavian Mihai Patrascoiu gay people and women drive automatic
1.5 turbo has two exhaust pipes in the back.
This is Euro spec. You're talking about the Si.
Dear Marek, thanks for your reply, I appreciate it. But I really don't think that in Europe the civic 1.5's back looks like the 1.0.
I love how you shit on the civic while you drive a auto 😂😂 get dad to take you out in a standard
Thought the 1.5 had twin exhausts.
The sporty trim, whatever it's called.
omg, what was that at 7:49? Someone talked like you, but lips weren't moving...
Vytautas Gečas are you serious?
Vytautas Gečas looool 😂😂😂
Is it possible to take the head of this car and put it on a 2020 si?
Petrol Octavia with 185 bhp takes 7.4
Mindaugas Gecas I driven civic and real time 0-100 in CVT is about 7.4 s not 8.5.Best time with manual about 7.5 but usually is about 7.6. After 100 km/h is much faster than 1.8 Octavia
+MrDupciN You're quoting results achieved by a Honda dealer.
Marek Drives Jestem Polakiem po prostu zdziwiło mnie skąd wytrzasnales te 8.5 s jak CVT robi ta nieszczęsna 100 w 7.2 s.Więc argument o słabych osiągach no coż...
Should I go for CVT or manual?
Manual
Can u please review the sedan when it arrives?
Perhaps I'll do it as a "second date", but I have to wait a few months, otherwise it won't get enough views.
Marek Drives okay👍
33 Grand and no rear vents... really...
It’s 0-60mph 6.9s in reality
i like the lines and the design, but the porpotions of the car seem odd and big
What does the “suspension” button (above economy button) do?
Adaptive suspension. It makes the suspension stiffer (which it doesn't need to be BTW).
Comparing Honda with f..king Škoda???? Buhahahahahahahhaahhaha
Pffff, when a Skoda fan comments on a Japanese vehicle, I just start laughing.
I will only trust honda cvt because honds build them unlike nissan
How it is possible to get 8.5 s to 100 with 185 bhp?
Mindaugas Gecas it's that damn CVT, it kills acceleration.
Actually CVT is marginally quicker, so it should be 8.3 or 8.2. My mistake.
the manual can do it in 6.7 sec, testers have done it
@@ZapCannon5 cvt Real acceleration is like 7.0-7.1 manual is like 7.5
Would it be a smart choice to exchange mine VW Golf VI 1.6 TDI, 105 hp to Honda Civic 1.5 182hp ?
Sounds reasonable.
@@MarekDrivesENG It concerns me a little about Civic consumption. 182hp is a significant upgrade. Would be 7-8 l / 100km a real number, or a just factory thing ?!
Depends how you drive it. Your name sounds like you're from the Balkans, which may suggest you drive like we do in Poland. In which case you may experience much higher fuel consumption :)
@@MarekDrivesENG Hahah you got the point bro. I am driving mi MKVI for about ten years. And I just want a desent upgrade with real turbo petrol engine. Civic had all aroung thing for me. Nice engine with a lot HP , cool looking modern look from the interior and exterior, and a lot bigger trunk then Golf. Thanks for all advices , Polish and Serbians are a lot common thing in everything, and you know what I `m talking about. Cheers bro ! :D
'Speed demon this car ain't' - Yes true when you drive it in ECO mode! - you shouldn't review cars if you don't take 20 minutes to learn the features of the car first. Turn OFF the ECO button.
Exactly bro. This car is damn powerful and fast.
nice car, but must be 1, 5 liter with manual gears. BUT : if it is not comfortable, than is not car for me. !
Is this a hatchback?
Kind of, sort of. A liftback maybe?
There is no way 0-100km is 8.5 seconds on this car.
It's rated at 8.2 but more like 7.2-7.5 depending on gearbox (so I've read anyway)
What are u talking about dude!! I got mine new from honda cvt sport pack with all the extra except sunroof and leather seats coz I don't like them and it was 20.900 euros!! What car can u get with that money at this extras!!
Here in italy 33.500 euro
No magic seats, I'll stick with the old one.
Nothing against the CVT, Honda builds fantastic lawn mowers: images.cdn.circlesix.co/image/2/1200/630/5/uploads/memes/lawnmower-stance-53b1d719398c0.jpg
But seriously these CVTs that pretend to up and downshift are completely senseless because everything that makes a CVT so efficient is abandoned.
I believe that you are the Honda hater. Honestly you said lots of stupid things about this car ( just to be clear I don't have one ), so your rewiev is not to be taken in to consideration...
Could you please list the most stupid things?
Only four stars in Euro Ncap. Not that good for a big brand such as Honda.
Its like a sports car but it is not.. I dont like engine sound and cvt in Honda is a bad dream.. Maybe with manual all those horses come to life..
Why don't you like the CVT? This is not the same CVT and the old ones. It feels like a DSG in fact and you can drive it in manual mode, if you wish.
All hondas r high price
Sue not gastos automatic and is new auto. I got same manual wirh 30m kilometres ans.is another world. 0100 like 7.4 7.5. i recomendaciones manual 100x100
civic 1.8 is best
You talk strange
I don't understand Honda engines, even the 1.8L Turbo engines feel slow compared to my 1.4L Turbo Golf with DSG.
phixion lol, Honda don't make a 1.8 Turbo, the new Civic has either 1.0 or 1.5 Turbo engines or an old carry over 1.8NA.
It is not fast but it can go fast😂
It is not a race car.You dont like Honda we see that.
What a bunch of crap, this guy clearly has an issue with Honda.
Exactly bro.
I owned a civic 1.5 turbo and this car is magnificent
this is a negative review
You cannot compare Kia to
Honda! Honda is reliable, Kia is shit car sorry!! 😂
DIsappointing car unfortunately. I've had the 1.0 Civic for two years. In that time, the turbo charger went out twice and 2 weeks ago, the timing belt snapped which destroyed the engine. This will be the last Honda I purchase.
Wow! That's a bad experience. Sorry to hear that, but thanks for sharing.
What was the mileage on it before the turbo went.
kofib3 The Turbo went bad at about 9 months of ownership. The timing belt snapped at 2 years 42.000 kilometers
@@shotten99 Ah, that's unfortunate and I don't blame you for losing trust in Honda. I hope this is an isolated incident and hopefully Honda will rectify this issue in the next update.
