The modernized living and dining room is a horror! So sad that they did such a tacky remodel.
Money can’t buy taste.
It's missing all the wood trim
Looks like someone ripped out all that beautiful mahogany woodwork.
The layout is great but I really dislike much of the modern furnishings and the wall to wall carpet in architecture like this. It looks more like a Miami Beach condo than a place at the Dakota. I was salivating thinking about how I’d redo it. It needs at the very least a gorgeous wood floor and oriental rugs, and the modern kitchen has got to go.
That carpet is nearly as icky as the kitchen cabinets. But once upon a time, both were the thing. But they ain't a thing anymore. It amazed me that both were still there.
That kitchen looks like something from IKEA...It's SO out of place in an apartment of that age and grandeur!
Agreed, kitchen has to be gutted. It’s disgusting. The whole place needs a major overhaul & renovation to restore the wood features. The whole unit brought back together would be amazing. 😊
Exactly what I thought. Hardwood floors, oriental rugs, one hump camel back sofa brocade or velvet upholstery with matching wing chairs, jewel-like colors, a grand piano, fireplace with oak surround and arts and crafts tiles, somewhere there should be a gilt ornate mirrors or two, floor vases holding rushes or other ornamental grass, and maybe even a small water garden. I'd love it!
Absolutely hedious what the
" designer" did to that apartment. The furnishings are cold and univiting, to say the least .
I really don't like the modern style. I prefer the original.
Gorgeous rooms and room sizes. However, the modern furnishings looked out of place for this elegant apartment.
I can hear the theme music from Rosemary's Baby as the camera circles the Dakota.
Yes. I kept waiting for them to show a linen closet that secretly connects to the witches' apartment next-door.
Gorgeous apartment! Lackluster décor, though. All the money in the world can't buy taste
Great apartment, but it needs to be completely updated. Wood floors are under those carpets and are probably pretty spectacular.
Ok, I am never going to be able to afford an apartment in the Dakota, but this one just gives me the sads. They were there for 50 years, so it stands to reason everything would be 1970's 'modern' but the colors and finishes are so devoid of any warmth. Why buy an apartment with so much glorious wood only to hide it? sigh...
Wow 50 years!
What a fabulous apartment. Thank you. When I watched Rosemary's Baby for the first time I wondered how a struggling actor could afford to live in such an apartment.
The bedrooms and the library were beautuful. Every other room too moderm. The kitchen, while functional was somewhat clinical. And yes,I agreed with you when you said too many mirrors in the dressing room.
Whoever was decorating this apartment over the years may have money but their taste sucks!
I had the great opportunity to attend a dinner party in the Dakota in 1984. There was a CPW address on the invitation but had no idea I was going to the Dakota and how memorable the evening would be.
The window air conditioners are not that effective to cool down an apartment that size with high ceilings. There are so many hidden problems (electrical, plumbing and fireplace chimneys). The modern furniture is so out of place with the original architectural elements. Many tour buses stop on W. 72 St. to see the Dakota and the Imagine - Strawberry Fields memorial especially on the weekends with hoards of tourists making the area congested. The apartments on the lower floors (floors 2-4) of the building which face CPW offer a great view of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.
If I was that wealthy, I would have pushed to get into that apartment. What a rare opportunity just to live in the Dakota.
That pink color in the bedroom overlooking Central park.
*Another stunningly drab interior underscoring that the most exceptional things about "The Dakota" remains its location, façade and history. (Quick! Perform a seance and resurrect Nureyev for this unit's decor.)*
Who redid this apartment? Carpeting? Why would they remodel it to look like this? The original was classic.
I would love to have a bedroom with large windows with a view like that!
Me, too. :)
Who saw Rosemarys’ Baby? This apt is Mia Farrows in the movie.
@@gregpendrey6711 that’s what I thought, too. The kitchen, second bedroom and library room really sparked my memories.
I don't like how the character has been destroyed.
It's way too modern for the Dakota . I prefer the original.
What a major disappointment. These were so beautiful in the past, but this modern remodel totally ruined it-- for me anyway. I saw Lauren Bacall's apt after she passed away and that was absolutely perfect, just what you would expect in such a grand old building.
$8mil to not have central a/c is wild to me, but I guess people are buying for the historical aspect.
@@joanneexume3655 Seriously, it's needs central heating and air.
Very very seriously. I'd forego just about anything to have my beloved a/c at the ready. I can't figure this out at all.
Maybe for the 12 million you'd get the phone number of the best HVAC guy in the city, but for 8 million, you should be grateful just to be there, come rain, or shine.
My exact thought.
@@joanneexume3655 and could you imagine paying over 12 K a month for HOA fees ?
The only thing I don't like is the carpeting throughout. It makes the unit look dated.
It’s amazing to me that people can hold on to the Dakota’s apartments for so long and that units come up for sale so rarely considering the prices. Once you’re in, who wouldn’t want to stay, however! Love the architecture and views, but the way it is decorated is a huge let down. If I had enough money to buy it, I’m sure I would try to bring it back to splendor. ❤ It seems sad that the doorways are blocked off, but understandable with the costs. The monthly upkeep alone! As always, thanks for sharing,
People that ruin the interiors of this building just do not appreciate the hard work that the craftspeople did. even if I had the $$ I'd have to pass on this apartment...or spend tons of cash to change it back to it's original!
Too right. Such people are Visigoths. I can't believe the Board allows it.
The bad taste is scandalous in a building of such splendor
It boggles my mind why anyone would paint over that magnificent wood-work (mantles / mouldings). True, it may be fashionable - for the moment - but it seems to negate the natural beauty of this wood.
But...each to their own...
Would be interesting to see images from the same period. Super curious all the changes it’s been through as people made it home. Thank you for the upload.
Love it. Comfortable and easy to clean.
No matter how many times you say it, this apartment is neither aesthetically pleasing nor functional.
Well, I'm always trying to be nice. :)
Fantastic layout; but if I was able to buy it, my budget would be swamped with redecorating most of the rooms and buying all new furniture and artwork.
They gave that place a housterectomy.
Gut it!! The decor description is a laugh!
I would so buy it!!!!!
If you do, remember I will bring the tea and scones. :)
@@StrangeHistoryX Ha! The next time a Fri the 13th falls in October, come on up and tea 🫖 will be served at 4! 😄
My dream to live there!!!❤❤❤
Wish we could see how the budget works with that high of a monthly fee.
Utterly shocking for what passes as the servant's room, most of the closets are more spacious.
Another great tour! Have you watched any of the videos posted by the designer Garrow Kedigian? He would know exactly how to really turn this jewel of a residence into a masterpiece. The owner who decorated with the soft contemporary style shown did a respectful job, so all this place needs is the right adjustments to bring back its sense of history and vintage beauty. Yes, I would consider this -- and I'm normally the kind of guy who fantasizes about living in a UES building designed by Rosario Candela, LOL! -- with that caveat. Thanks again!
Great pics of the Building. Love the 70s,80s+ some late mid-century modern furniture and decor.
Tacky remodel
So what is behind the non functioning door in the library? Another apartment? So much for privacy if so.
Probably have wood floors underneath the carpeting that could be resanded if necessary
Fot such a big apartment the staff room seems a bit stingy. Granted I don't know if it's for sleep-in or having a break, but even so.
Monthly maintenance fee, more than 12 grand..
What are you paying for???????
Well, there is a doorman who opens the cab doors, and an office that will sign for packages. Is that worth it? Hmmm. Okay, there is more. But still .... yeah ... that's a lot of bread.
Interesting unit. From what I see, totally subtracting all furnishings and artwork, a circa 1979 interior remodel looking from the forms and lines of the drywall work. While this sleekness is appreciated in the Olympic Tower over on 5th Avenue, not sure this works here. Am surprised that some units still have window AC units compared to some of the units with fully integrated ducted AC systems. I see the radiators under the windows in all the units that you have shown on your channel. Might I presume that this is a central system? And if so, would this be connected to the NYC steam utility as a good number of NYC buildings have? As you may know, the more behind the walls aspect of this building is more of my interest. Who lives there or have lived there while interesting is secondary. I'm going to also presume that the window sashes have been replaced with dual pane units that match visually and historically. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to do a total remodel. The floor plans indicate just a small single elevator in each quadrant. How on Earth do they get large furniture and other things like a pro range or a Sub Zero refrigerator up into the units. Great videos. Many thanks.
The service elevators go down to the basement so the big furniture, etc. go up that way. Someday I will get a photo of a service elevator and staircase. I'll talk more about the radiator system in another video. I know lots about that, etc. but most people don't, so expect to be the only one watching that video. :)
@@StrangeHistoryX We look forward to that. Many thanks!
@@StrangeHistoryX I'd watch, always interested in how historical buildings manage utilities and adapt to energy & environmental challenges
@@StrangeHistoryX Do PLEASE create a video about the radiators, the heating system, the elevator interior cabins and what's in the basement. The more photos and more detail the better!
Please something with original everything
What about that staff room??? Just a toilet - no tub, sink or shower.
$13,000 a month fees yikes….i bitch at my country club fees which is 14K a year..lol
It’s a beauty but the entry seems underwhelming compared to other lower priced units.
I agree.
Was it owned and used for a corporate short-term apartment? It was incredibly high end but has kitchens and furnishings that say, "We really don't care, do you?"
If you look at the floorplan you'll see a servants entrance to the apartment that enters into the kitchen.
In the kitchen there is the door going into the servant's quarters.
And another door going into the dining room.
It appears that it is the staff only that uses the kitchen and the owners probably never enter.
The kitchen is designed for efficiency.
I've seen this type of setup many times in old homes and apartments. People are stunned that beautiful old homes have such a plain kitchen and that is why.
The staff stays either in their room or working in the kitchen creating three meals per day and the occasional dinner party rich people like to host.
The carpet is hideous! Could be a wonderful apartment with the right taste.
Has anyone ever taken you up on your tea and scones offer? 😃
Yes, they have. And I keep my word and bring the tea and scones.
@@StrangeHistoryX You do such a great job with your videos. Very interesting!
U can remodel, redesign and revamp, but the negative energies will still be there.
I love the library. The rest not so much.
I love the layout, but the furniture is to minimal and modern for the architecture. It deserves antique furniture and Persian rugs and velvet and leather sofas and chairs.
I love to watch your productions they are very opulant and informative.
i wonder can any of the fire places be used
Makes me sick that someone would modernize it and paint it white on white. It's high time the interiors of historic buildings are protected - and not just the outside.
Don't care for the carpeting, decor or furnishings. Lovely fireplaces and views though.
That apartment is horrible. I sure wouldn’t wanna live in it the way it is currently. And boy oh boy, it is not worth the price. Not even close.
@@paulh1745 But the history is so cool.
Under-impressed. The master bedroom was the best room but all I could think about would be the beeping taxi horns and sirens.
It's pronounced FOY-AYE not FOY-ER!
Money but no taste!
Wouldn't consider it without a good-sized terrace.
@@davidcattin7006 ...there are very few, if any, " terraces" in the Dakota.
Living areas in the back and bedrooms with park views? Not so well planned…
Are those air conditioners in the windows? In an 8 million dollar apartment?
I gotta assume Ilon Specht’s apartment will be on the market relatively soon.
Did she live next door? If so, then she must have owned both apartments since her price tag was $19.5 million.
@@StrangeHistoryX no, Ilon’s apartment is on the north west corner. Original layout. I’ve been there a couple of times. She passed a few months ago.
Too bad a bunch of us subs couldn't purchase and use as time share! The board would LOVE that lol. 💜💎💜💋
You mean Yoko Ono is moving out?😄
Does The Dakota have central air??
No.
3,300 sq feet for 8 rooms are tiny.
Beautiful apartment but needs alot of work.
With the exception of the original fireplaces and doors, I think it’s pretty horrible, including the layout.
Yep. Those images are old but still … they destroyed all the beauty to create an “artist gallery”. Yuck. I hope it looks better today.
It looks like they put some kind of laminate or linoleum covering over the original floors (which I suspect are herringbone or some other beautiful wood floor, original to the building). Why, in God's name would they have done that?!
Somebody ruined this place with hideous decorating.
Would it be correct to assume there is no parking garage in the Dakota?
Yes -- cars did not exist when the Dakota was built. At one time the Dakota had an adjacent parking lot (originally tennis courts), but that was lost and developed with a building on it when the Dakota converted from a rental apartment building to a co-op apartment building.
Right! All that Moolah and not parking. There's parking garage in the building next door, so Dakota residents might have reserved access. At a separate cost of course.
@@TanukiDigital With the kind of money required to buy the apartment, I’m they have a private car service service to drive them from their door to the door of their destination. Having to find parking wherever you go is for poor people.
Colors? No. They remind me of the ‘70’s. And not in a good way.
The decorators should be embarrassed. This place is just plain ugly. What a shame.
Ooooa, that awful kitchen.
Beautiful ❤but....I don't like the mirrors and contemporary look. I love antiques so I would want to honor the age of the apt with period furniture.
No yard😒
Inner courtyard
Not for me!
Not my style.
