GOT, HAVE, HAVE GOT, HAVE GOTTEN (What's the difference?!)

  • I explain how to use I GOT... I HAVE... I HAVE GOT... and I HAVE GOTTEN... in American English and British English with lots of easy-to-understand example sentences.
    A lot of British people think that Americans sound foolish or uneducated when they hear them say "gotten". This is mostly because they don't know the full history of the word.
    The British were using "gotten" long before the USA even existed. The origin of the word is is British, not American. However, they have almost completely stopped using it in the UK, whereas we have continued using it in the US.

    GOTTEN (chiefly Canada, US, Ireland, Scotland, Northern English, or archaic) past participle of get
    The American and archaic or regional British usage of the verb conjugates as get-got-gotten or as get-got-got depending on the meaning, whereas the modern general British usage of the verb has largely lost this distinction and normally conjugates as get-got-got in most cases except, sometimes, where the speaker wants to emphasise getting something. Gotten has also survived in adjectives, especially in ill-gotten gains. There is an increased usage of gotten in the UK (specifically England), which may be due to influence from American films and increased access to American programs in Britain. However, it is still less common than the get-got-got conjugation.

    In the British language how a non-native speakers differentiate between present perfect and possession when the sentences in both structures are the same? And can you tell negative and question sentences of these structures?

    • @TeacherMikeEnglish
      @TeacherMikeEnglish  8 месяцев назад

      Present perfect and present simple are not the same.
      Present Perfect:
      Subject + have + verb 3
      Possession
      Subject + have + noun

    • @darakhshankhan9692
      @darakhshankhan9692 8 месяцев назад

      @TeacherMikeEnglish British English 1. Possession - I have a pen.
      2. Past simple - Yesterday, I got a pen.
      3. Present perfect - I have got a pen.
      4. Possession - I have got a pen.
      American English 1. Possession - I have a pen.
      2. Past simple - Yesterday, I got a pen.
      3. Present perfect - I have gotten a pen.
      4. Possession - I have got a pen.
      Are these structures correct?
      I am confused in British English.
      Present perfect -I have got a pen.
      Possession - I have got a pen.
      Here I am confused because present perfect means that I have received a pen or bought it. Bt the same structure means that I have a pen that is my possession I have it from sometime.. How can we diffenciate the meaning of these sentences in spoken?
