Yeah I wanted to use the pulley but I didn't wanna be too overpowered ;P in my bow only video I did end up using the black bow and it's amazing haha, thanks!
Crossbows are a great off-hand weapon as you can use them for chip damage or to finish an enemy off at range if you aren't using magic, because unlike a regular bow you can fire Crossbows one-handed while keeping you main weapon able to be used. As your only means of offense they're not very good, but that's not where they shine, admittedly they have some use in poise-breaking because dealing damage resets the timer of when enemies start regenerating Poise, allowing you to keep up pressure, and they deal more damage than darts. Also status bolts pair nicely with melee weapons that also inflict the same status (think Bleed or Poison). Also while there are ranged Ashes of War like Thunderbolt, Spectral Lance, Storm Blade, Glintblade Phalax or Glintstone Pebble just fo name a few. A crossbow in your off-hand allows you to use Ashes of War like Piercing Fang, Lion's Claw, Unsheathe, Square-Off, Giant Huntor Warcry instead or even use unique weapons with Ashes of War that you can't change (Bloodhound's Fang for example).
I feel like you touched on the strongest point, which would be to maintain the poise break timer from resetting, because they don't do much else (I'm not sure if parrying them with status weapons would work well, I feel like in the event that you would want to help build it up there are other things better for that, but it might be situational)
I LOVE that so many of the WAY stronger builds had to cave and use the fancy spear on the snake but the blind crossbow wielding chick said "hold my eyes, I got this"
Does it effect everything that deals pierce damage? doesn't the rusted anchor deal pierce damage but I don't think it effects that (I guess they can have two classifications while coding, checking if pierce && weapon type lol)
I think you can increase the damage more on the horse with the mount and sting talisman. The lightning and explosive bolts actually do more indirect damage than direct so jump shot while they side walk would damage them more. But seeing you can already kill al of them anyway.😅
I believe only one other person has mentioned it (maybe?), I didn't even realize it was raining while writing the script lmao (but also they underperform anyway, trust me)

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it :) I might do a randomizer one of these days, i'm basically doing everything I can with the base game before modding it haha
you can, but I tend to not use them unless it fits with the rest (so howl of shabriri on a frenzied flame only run, for example) I try to make the weapon by itself as strong as possible, but it...doesn't work for this crossbow lol
one of these days I will probably do some modded runs, i'm basically running through the list I have made things i can do without altering the game haha
about 9 hours for crossbow, my two longest were the no walk, which was 46 hours, and the consumables only which was 48. consumables only would probably be a lot lower if I did it now, since I have more knowledge of the game lol
It means the hit boxes are accurate to their model, so an arrow has a collider the size of the actual arrow (and not bigger), this making the hit boxes tight
Bro how about starting a game save and collecting everything u usually use and then back up that save to use whenever u do a run like this. This is just a suggestion cause i know how boring it is to collect stuff everytime we start a save.
14:33 Not that questionable a hitbox. The side of his foot connected with your back. I've seen far worse in these games. Like a halberd poke in DS3 that was a foot away from a character, but did damage anyway.
To be fair with the percentage increase, the benefit really wouldn't be that different than if you did more damage, right? I guess every ten shots would effectively get you one for free. Not sure if that would've amounted to much, but I think that holds true even with stronger weapons unless it enables you to one or two shot. 10% is pretty meaningless on it's own, though. I know that the point of the bows aren't meant to be primary damage dealers, but it's even harder to imagine using such a talisman then.
you're not wrong, but a bigger base number would make it more worth it just because of numbers. That's also only counting one increase, if you used winged sword insignia, and milicenets prothesis for example you have more percent increase (after the activate) At any rate the only reason I used them here was because it was that, or literally worthless talismans lol
i always thought it was a shame crossbows don't scale with anything. On one hand it makes sense, you are not gonna reload them any harder with higher strength or dex, but on the other hand they don't exactly have many redeeming qualities, especially compared to magic. I wonder how they could be made more viable
I like to think with 99 strength i'll pull the trigger harder and it does more damage lol as far as how to make them more viable, if they keep the no scaling thing they might just have to add specialized crossbows. like one that has innate rot on it or something
Wow. Crossbows do more damage than bows. That's what I learned from this video. Bows do have scaling, but even 99 str 99 dex on a maxed upgrade bow doesn't do the kind of damage that crossbow dealt. Granted, they all do basically no damage, but still. Crossbow also doesn't have the stamina issue that bows have. Bows eat stamina on the wind up and the shot, and fire way more slowly than crossbows+reload. I didn't really just how inferior bows are to crossbows in this game, until now. And I (almost) 100% cleared the game with a bow-only run. I could never kill Malenia, because I ran out of arrows on a literal perfect run and died to inventory management on phase 2 with her being 2 shots from death. Cleared out the rest of the game with it though. Once you've secured an easy stock of arrows, just don't get hit. Simple as that. Of course, late game dungeons you NEED to use crossbows, greatbows, bows, and ballistas in order to clear them out, because of how many shots it takes to get through. I even got into the habit of maxing out both fletched *and* non-fletched bone arrows just for more wiggle room in dungeons. Because ammo caps are the actual boss of the run.
are they? I did a bow only video some time ago and I don't particularly remember how well they performed compared to crossbows. A short bow can fire far faster than a crossbow can, so even if the actual numbers are lower I imagine that would help lol. if you're just using a standing long bow then I can imagine they are worse, but I don't know that for a fact. I don't remember my strat with Malenia, bleed and frost arrows i'm sure, but I do remember changing the arrows before phase 2 specifically because menuing in phase 2 sounds like a nightmare lol
Classic objection we've had since the falcon ring in ds1, but a wrong one: range IS damage. Ranged weapons' damage drop off progressively according to distance. With more range, the drop off is mitigated or straight up negated, based on your distance. So, having the range ring will allow you to have maximum damage at the usual distance one fights ranged.
@@DoomWolfOfficial it does both! It gives you 65% bonus: let's assume you have 10m of range and get maximum damage at 5m at most. With the ring now you have 10m+65%=16.5m total range, and get max damage at 5m+65%= ~8.5m. Of course I'm pulling these numbers out my butt, but the concept is the same: with the ring you'll be more often within an area with a minor damage drop off, meaning you'll deal more damage overall.
Always hated the fact that souls series don't give a fuck about crossbows, so i learned modding just to give them scaling and increased bolt flight speed (In real life the thing goes up to 90m per second on old crossbows lmao). Now its fun to play with it, even tho i didn't made it half as strong as sorceries can get, now it does non-meme damage xD
I think the reason they don't do great is because they are meant to be used as a utility, not a primary damaging thing. But I do wish they would put one in the game that was actually good and could be used like a real ranged build haha
The "Effective" Range on bows (and some crossbows) is so low for its highest damage range that Arrows Reach is often better than Arrows sting. Back near launch when i was doing a "crossbow" build with the jar cannon and a secondary Radahn bow i would see on average a 20-30% damage diff by using arrows reach and that wasnt from far range it was mid-range. they might have buffed ranged weapons effective range since then but i dont think they did.
although iv never used soldiers crossbow and fromsoft games are wierd. so i have no clue. soldiers cross bow might have really good effective range so the arrows reach doesnt do anything.
@@DoomWolfOfficial noooope, dropped arrows reach for spear after goldrick and you can see in the status's under your health that you only have arrows sting, blue dancer, and spear on for almost the full run :p great run, probably could have saved yourself some pain tho 😅
@@DoomWolfOfficial I know, but when you're in the mood to snipe some mobs, that's the best time to use em. Lately I myself have been using mohgs spear since I got the blood exaltation talisman.
Maybe I misremember, but doesn't the Arrow's Reach talisman also boost damage to nearer foes? Also, on the matter of levels: You still could have made some use of endurance, with bigger stamina and the lightest of light rolls. Also I think every level increases resistance of some sort? Not that any of this is needed, but being nitpicky is a YT-commenters perogative.
if you do varres quest you can go there early, basically 0. talk to varre at the beginning (you don't actually need to talk to him here) 1. beat a shardbearer 2. talk to finger lady 3. talk to varre at rose church 4. invade the npc or players three times (win or lose it doesn't matter) 5. talk to varre to get a piece of cloth 6. get maiden blood (there are three in the game I believe, I just get it from the church of inhabition 7. talk to varre again and he will give you an item, talk to him _again_ and he will give you the teleport item.
well, the stamina drain on firing the crossbow is so low it actually _gives_ you stamina if you're missing it, so from a full stamina bar it completely refills anyway. it isn't hard to manage only dodging when your attacks have that low of stamina cost, so there was no need lol

Yeah I wanted to use the pulley but I didn't wanna be too overpowered ;P in my bow only video I did end up using the black bow and it's amazing haha, thanks!
You rocked it like a trooper ngl keep it up
Its a crime that your channel doesnt have above 200,000 subcribers. Every video gave me the joy I need for a month.
haha thanks, i'm just glad you enjoy the videos :)
I think Convergence buffs crossbows alot. I know they buffed bows because I made a buff greatbow-wielding archer
Nice! I haven't tried any mods haha
this just seems painful, props to you, also ornamental straight sword only plese
thanks, it definitely took a while haha
I've used that weapon once, could be fun!
So like a normal person once an ad sponsor thing comes out I skip it
But because of the way you introduced it I actually watched it
haha thanks my friend, I'm really trying to up my ad segue game
I love how so many challenge runs fail at rykard yet the soldier's crossbow of all things is able to best him
Crossbow is KING! lol
I LOVE that so many of the WAY stronger builds had to cave and use the fancy spear on the snake but the blind crossbow wielding chick said "hold my eyes, I got this"
haha, guess the world just isn't ready to fire the serpent hunter bolt out of the cross bow yet :P
Congrats on the sponsorship. You deserve it
Thanks :)
11:10 My guess is damage type - it affects everything, that deals Pierce Damage. And bolts deals Pierce, so....
Does it effect everything that deals pierce damage? doesn't the rusted anchor deal pierce damage but I don't think it effects that (I guess they can have two classifications while coding, checking if pierce && weapon type lol)
@@DoomWolfOfficial Counterattack is for Pierce Damage, so why It would not affect Rusted Anchor, if it deals Pierce?
great video! But, don't the bolts themselves benefit from stats? like fire bolts from STR, holy from FTH, lightning from DEX, bleed from ARC?
I don't believe they do, other things like fire pots do but not the bolts
Hey I’m a big fan of your videos, I’d really appreciate an og casul build ( medium shield + any ol straight sword)
I feel like I would appreciate it too because it would be a break lol
Glad you enjoy the videos :)
I think you can increase the damage more on the horse with the mount and sting talisman. The lightning and explosive bolts actually do more indirect damage than direct so jump shot while they side walk would damage them more. But seeing you can already kill al of them anyway.😅
Would have been helpful at the time but I powered through either way :)
Doom Wolf: "Elden Rings hitboxes being so tight"
Also Doom Wolf: "Questionable hitbox, game"
Hey they can't all be winners lmao
7:42 I am sure many people have already mentioned it but the Fire Arrows were underperforming because it was raining.
I believe only one other person has mentioned it (maybe?), I didn't even realize it was raining while writing the script lmao (but also they underperform anyway, trust me)
Ur content is amazing, keep it up m8
Thanks, glad you enjoy it :)
"Loretta, second verse same as the first"
Now put me on a plane so I can put em in a hurst?
Loretta now fears all planes lol
@@DoomWolfOfficial especially the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird
I recently beat darksouls remastered and I just noticed how much elden ring took from it I wonder what inspired valiant gargoyles and godskin duo I wonder if that could have been taken from bell gargoyles and ornstein and smough
Based in design alone, probably lol
I guess the spear talisman works because you could say after being fired from the crossbow the bolt is being thrust through the air to hit the target
Fair enough, that seems to be the theory (that the bolts/arrows having trusting weapon properties)
This was good old friend. Maybe try an actual archery run? Before beating a remembrance you have the crappy short bow then swapping to any bow that isn't complete dogwater, dealers choice! Maybe even dabbling in greatbows for the funsies
I did an archery run near the begging of the games life cycle! It was my edgy legolas run haha
@@DoomWolfOfficial but now there's the dlc bow with the new talismans... which now that I think about it might not work. I know we got new archery talismans but I can't remember if they work atm
6:42 no, it is clearly duck season, Mr. Bird.
wabbit season fire! lol
11:09 Arrows and bolts are just smaller, tool assisted javelin, which is a little brother to Spears right?
does that mean the ballista is just a normal tool assisted javelin?
Now I kind of want to see a Beastial Incarnation only run but without Flask of Cerulean Tears lol
those two things are written separately in my notes, i'm not sure about together though lol
@@DoomWolfOfficial i think it's doable because the Beastial Incarnation's cost is fairly low. You might want to grab as much startlight shard as possible on the run though
7:30 well you're also using fire attacks in the rain 💀
At the time of making this I may or may not have been unaware water effects fire/lightening resistances lol
Doom with another stupid run to perfection lol. I was trying to think of an idea for a challenge but all I could think of was glintstone pebble only but honestly that's not even that tough so I posit beastial incantations only
Thanks glad you enjoyed it :)
Glintstone pebble only doesn't sound that hard (maybe Rennala because of her 80% magic absorption
I haven't actually tried any beastial incantations so I'm not sure how good or bad they are haha
Hello, very nice video but i would love you to see you playing the randomaizer mod i think it will be a lot of fun
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it :)
I might do a randomizer one of these days, i'm basically doing everything I can with the base game before modding it haha
Could you not use buffing spells as well? Golden vow, flame grant me strength, howl of shabriri?
you can, but I tend to not use them unless it fits with the rest (so howl of shabriri on a frenzied flame only run, for example)
I try to make the weapon by itself as strong as possible, but it...doesn't work for this crossbow lol
Nice video! You could try a Reborn or Reforged mod run.
one of these days I will probably do some modded runs, i'm basically running through the list I have made things i can do without altering the game haha
How long did it take for you to beat elden ring with just the crossbow? And how long did your longest challenge run take?
about 9 hours for crossbow, my two longest were the no walk, which was 46 hours, and the consumables only which was 48.
consumables only would probably be a lot lower if I did it now, since I have more knowledge of the game lol
@@DoomWolfOfficial do no walking plus consumables only or you will be demoted from gigachad tier ;)
But jokes aside, the shit you do is insane, I have 50+ hours in elden ring and i have only beaten the main bosses till fire giant and commander nial.
That was the best transition into a sponsor I’ve ever see
Thanks, i'm trying to up my ad segue game
Could someone define hit boxes being “tight” to me?
It means the hit boxes are accurate to their model, so an arrow has a collider the size of the actual arrow (and not bigger), this making the hit boxes tight
Bro how about starting a game save and collecting everything u usually use and then back up that save to use whenever u do a run like this. This is just a suggestion cause i know how boring it is to collect stuff everytime we start a save.
I thought about it, but there are times when I want/need to start a character from scratch, things like appearance or starting class/items
Radhan is a master of gravity magic.
If he launches himself into the stratosphere,
He will come back.
I suppose my statement about the game having "real life physics" and "gravity magic" are not mutually exclusive in game worlds, so yeah, i guess
I had an idea for a challenge run. Left-handed attacks only.
I actually have this written down in my notes :)
since you like pain you should do a wraith calling bell only run no retaliation
I have a feeling that will be...less than fun because of enemies having crazy resistances lol
I wouldn't mind seeing a full moon crossbow build. I've never seen anyone use it, at all.
I think press continue did it, but who knows maybe I will haha
14:33 Not that questionable a hitbox. The side of his foot connected with your back. I've seen far worse in these games. Like a halberd poke in DS3 that was a foot away from a character, but did damage anyway.
in playback yeah but in editing I was def farther than you think, but also agreed that it isn't the worst lol
I wonder how much damage you can get out of the Full Moon Crossbow with Meteorite Bolts, Terra Magica & all the buffs
me too, optimistically a fair amount, realistically like 12 lmao
Idk if u still do ds1 challenges but if u do u should do a run where u use broken sword
I plan on doing more DS1 challenges, eventually! Thanks for the suggestion!
That's also only counting one increase, if you used winged sword insignia, and milicenets prothesis for example you have more percent increase (after the activate)
At any rate the only reason I used them here was because it was that, or literally worthless talismans lol
love your content man
Thanks, glad you enjoy the videos :)
i always thought it was a shame crossbows don't scale with anything. On one hand it makes sense, you are not gonna reload them any harder with higher strength or dex, but on the other hand they don't exactly have many redeeming qualities, especially compared to magic.
I wonder how they could be made more viable
I like to think with 99 strength i'll pull the trigger harder and it does more damage lol
as far as how to make them more viable, if they keep the no scaling thing they might just have to add specialized crossbows. like one that has innate rot on it or something
Damn that ad placement was too good 😭
Thanks, i'm trying to up my ad segue game lol
Can u do a sleep only run. With Sleeping arrows and Sleeping pots(with or without st. Trina’s Sword)
perhaps! not a lot are fully effected by sleep, but there are plenty of things that would fit!
Yoo DoomWolf posted, putting everything else on hold.
Hope you enjoyed the video my friend :)
@@DoomWolfOfficial heck yea I did lol
I live for these videos man
haha i'm glad you like them, i'll do my best to improve with each video :)
Classic objection we've had since the falcon ring in ds1, but a wrong one: range IS damage. Ranged weapons' damage drop off progressively according to distance. With more range, the drop off is mitigated or straight up negated, based on your distance. So, having the range ring will allow you to have maximum damage at the usual distance one fights ranged.
but does it give more range or more effective range?
I always love that Gideon is either a worthless pleb or an absolute monster, no in between.
it's true, can confirm there is no setting between those two haha
I feel like I kept both on because they are the bow specific talismans, but I might be misremembering haha
@@DoomWolfOfficial noooope, dropped arrows reach for spear after goldrick and you can see in the status's under your health that you only have arrows sting, blue dancer, and spear on for almost the full run :p
great run, probably could have saved yourself some pain tho 😅
Crossbows are only useful when you need to snipe from a distance. Lol
That's more or less their intense purpose, definitely not primary weapon material haha
@@DoomWolfOfficial I know, but when you're in the mood to snipe some mobs, that's the best time to use em. Lately I myself have been using mohgs spear since I got the blood exaltation talisman.
Nicely done
Thanks :)
That...i'm not sure about, I think it just ups the effective range, so anything that is already close wont be modified
How did you get into Mohgwyn Palace so early? Im new to the game😅
if you do varres quest you can go there early, basically
0. talk to varre at the beginning (you don't actually need to talk to him here)
1. beat a shardbearer
2. talk to finger lady
3. talk to varre at rose church
4. invade the npc or players three times (win or lose it doesn't matter)
5. talk to varre to get a piece of cloth
6. get maiden blood (there are three in the game I believe, I just get it from the church of inhabition
7. talk to varre again and he will give you an item, talk to him _again_ and he will give you the teleport item.

I really should sit down and do that ay? maybe soon, maybe
@@DoomWolfOfficial i been waiting a hot min to see that xD
I'm curious as to why you didn't level endurance as that would have at least increased stamina
well, the stamina drain on firing the crossbow is so low it actually _gives_ you stamina if you're missing it, so from a full stamina bar it completely refills anyway. it isn't hard to manage only dodging when your attacks have that low of stamina cost, so there was no need lol
Even if you're using a melee build, Fortissax is kinda weak. Power stancing the Nagakiba and Rivers of Blood wrecks that guy.
yeah but tbf power stancing duel bleed weapons wrecks mosts things (nothing wrong with that , just saying lol)
