  • For years, the Pocono IndyCar race was behind only the Indy 500 in terms of significance. Once again, it's off the schedule. How does an event evolve in importance? This is a look at the long and wild history of Indy Cars at Pocono.
For decades, controversy surrounded the Pocono 500. Weird stories, bad decisions, and tough weather have marred the race. Racing in a hurricane... fans crossing the track... rough track conditions. But can the problems today be traced to something that happened 40 years ago? It's an event rich in history for both good and bad reasons.
This is the third in a series. Check out:

The point with few practice hours is very relevant. The track is called "Tricky Triangle" for a reason. 2 hours for practice is a joke, and I believe it contributed to bad crashes during last two years a lot.

My mother lived through Agnes, and she told me that Pocono Raceway was used as a staging area for rescue and recovery efforts post storm (similar to how Daytona is used whenever a hurricane hits in Florida) so for USAC to think that they were gonna be able to run on the originally scheduled date is honestly the dumbest idea in their history, and this is a history that includes running an actual indycar race at Daytona and thought running indycars at Talladega was a good idea... No wonder why USAC is irrelevant outside of sprint car racing

Pennsylvania got it worse from Agnes than any other state, but it was pretty bad here in New York too. I was in fifth grade, and have never seen it rain so hard since. Everything was flooded here, but not as bad as Pennsylvania, and just being kids, we treated it like a holiday, since we got a couple of days off from school. We'd go down to the flooded areas and jump in and swim around and have a good time, not thinking about the people whose houses were flooded. But that's the way you are when you're a kid. Today, just imagine kids swimming around in all that dirty water and nobody thinking about stopping it. Hurricane Sandy was worse a few years ago, because it actually destroyed houses and wrecked neighborhoods, but Agnes it was just flooded. Nobody got killed and nobody lost their house.

I can only hope Indycar adds Pocono back to the schedule soon. I know some people will complain about how unsafe it is, but if the cars have a halo, then another Justin Wilson accident shouldn't happen and Wickens accident was just a freak accident. Though what probably doesn't help is most indycar drivers (except for the vets) lack the experience in oval racing to maneuver through traffic at 225 or 230 mph without crashing.

    • @Nitron2097

They need to start the race with the cars spaced further apart and find a way to reduce the drafting effect. Also the walls have to be built higher to keep cars out of the fences.

    • @FallingPicturesProductions

@@Nitron2097 if the drafting effect is any further reduced then where it was in 2018, it would become outright impossible to overtake at Pocono. • @Posirep

Wilson's accident could still happen theoretically. The nose cone landed right on top of his head. The halo/aeroscreen would be something like a basketball hoop and that piece was a "swish" shot. IndyCar has tethered the nosecone now but either way Wilson was just the most unlucky guy ever with that.
And I don't think oval inexperience has anything to do with the crashes. These guys have plenty of experience on high speed ovals. Wickens was a rookie and made a rookie mistake... A mistake he made earlier in the year at Texas too. He got away with that one unscathed tho.
No excuse for Sato this year. Dude has years of big oval experience. Has won an Indy 500. Was 3rd at Indy this year. Hell, he even won on an oval a week later at Gateway. But Sato does Sato things, be it an oval or road course. He has his "no attack, no chance" motto which sometimes leads to spectacular passes but often just leads to destroyed race cars.

    • @mistertheking

Wickens' accident wasn't a freak accident. That was Wickens being a moron. Michael Andretti was entirely right in what he said after the accident. Yes, it was tragic his career was ended right then and there and I wish him well in his recovery, but it was indeed his fault.

(Not by himself, though.) I don't know why I remember a commercial from over 40 years ago, but who could forget Ralph Kiner singing? I worked as a messenger for a law firm in New York at that time, and they were legal representatives of the F&M Schaefer Brewing Company, so I made many a trip to their corporate headquarters at 3 Park Avenue, which was on Park & 33rd Street. The law office was in the Pan Am Building, at Park & 42nd, and they used to give me tokens to take the subway to the Schaefer offices, but I'd pocket the tokens and walk the 9 blocks, which was always nice if you were on a tight budget, which I was as a 17 year old minimum wage worker.

Pocono Raceway is on the middle of a genuine wilderness. I haven't been there in a while, but we used to go every year for the NASCAR races. We wouldn't park in the track facilities, but on one of the side roads leading into the track, and it would be about a mile, mile & a half walk just to get to the track, (and another mile or so walking halfway around the track from the back stretch to the grandstand), and you'd see bears moseying around in the woods. But they were cool and didn't even pay attention to you. Parking away from the track was one way to beat the traffic out after the race, if you didn't mind the walk. At least it was scenic.

We were never in our car in the parking lot for more than 45 minutes! That's really not bad, IMO.

Thanks for sharing - this is an exceptionally well-made video in which you not only discuss Pocono's history in great detail, but also share the story of its troubled relationship with IndyCar through the years. I've been to six NASCAR Cup Series races (it would've been seven races if the 2016 Pennsylvania 400 hadn't been postponed from Sunday to Monday) at Pocono, but the lone IndyCar race I attended there in 2018 was certainly an enjoyable experience. Although I'm honestly more of a NASCAR fan, I would love to see IndyCar back on the schedule at Pocono - if not next year, then in 2022 for sure. I also believe that once fans are allowed at the track in full capacity, NASCAR and IndyCar should team up at the "Tricky Triangle," with IndyCar and the Truck Series on Saturday, followed by the Xfinity and Cup Series on Sunday. I would gladly buy tickets and make the trip west from New Jersey for both days of racing. Anyway, once again, this is an excellent video - thanks for sharing!

It was fun seeing IndyCar race near me and also getting autographs, pictures with the drivers. Plus sometimes just talking to the mechanics while they not busy. Another thing was is meeting new friends you see year after year. It was a cool experience. I remember the last time IndyCar race at Pocono in 1989. I was only 11 years old. Now I'm 41 years old and I hope Penske get IndyCar back at Pocono. Kind of weird that a race has grown from 2015 to 2019 when they moved the date from July to August. Now not coming back, that sucks. I hope I can see an IndyCar race next year. Richmond is out of the question because it's the same weekend as the Six Hours at Watkins Glen. I'll be at Watkins Glen that weekend. With as many different style cars as there were owners and teams there was a lot of "competition" with makes and styles as well as the blistering on track speed. The spec cars of today while presenting closer racing, really loses something from the 40 year or so period from 1950-1990 when so many different ideas were engineered with each model trying different ideas to build the recipe for getting around in the fastest way. I think Pocono is an event on the Indycsr schedule that got a bad rap in recent years for supposed “safety”.
Wilson’s death in 2015 was not at all the fault of pocono, rather it was misfortunate debris.
And then as for 2018 and 2019? Track safety does play part of a role in this (the infield needs to be expanded once again), however that’s not a good justification when Indy is just as unsafe if not more unsafe.
Treat it similar to Indy in the sense that drivers get as much practice with the track as possible. Not like an entire month of course but at least 12 hours.

Pocono and Indycar's relationship was really weird this time around. They kinda seemed like they were in it and at times it felt like they weren't but i think that comes down to how attendance was going back and forth. I really only think they were super for Indycar this time year when it was announced that they were only getting one Nascar weekend a year and for them that's a huge money loss to have 1 major race a year and that being that. It also doesn't help that the crashes really hampered shit hard this around, while it's the cost of racing 220 mph cars even Indycar fans get burned out on the shocking accidents, a big wreck once per year guarantee isn't really a comfortable thing to think about with these cars and with how far behind it feels Pocono is with safety upgrades you can see why they bailed.
I think this video in a way kinda sheds light on how stingy Pocono is financially and how behind the times the track has kinda always been. the damage that the CART-USAC spat did to them and how the track seems to be way behind on upgrades is a thing fans are only beginning to think about just now. Boiler plate walls by the 90s were kinda ridiculous and not having catch fences around the perimeter of the track till 2011 is pretty shocking, add on to the fact they had two Indycar races in a row where the fence repair looked like someone just grabbed something from Home Depot kinda hits home how this track might be the most low budget major auto racing track in the country right now. Its the price of not being aligned with ISC or SMI and running stuff on your own sadly. (I totally get why though.)
I think when the dust settles they'll have more of a shot of going back to Fontana then Pocono with how badly everyone felt this around.
I'm super happy to see you and Brock doing Indycar content as i feel that side of youtube has been massively untouched in the area of racing analytic review content. Y'all have been killing it on the Nascar side and its cool to see you guys branch out.

5:43 I did not attend the first race but when I did a few years later for both NASCAR and the Indy Cars, the traffic was STILL a problem and if it rained the day of or before the race the parking areas were quagmire. Traffic definitely a deterrent and more casual fans would leave way before the finish to beat the traffic. It took years for the track management and the local authorities to realize they had to make all of the major arteries one way coming in to the track and one way going out to get the traffic problem solved.

I’m a younger fan, I’m only 16, and I’ve been a Nascar fan for six years, so the IndyCar oval races were really the only thing that captivated me into the sport. Trust me, I have so much respect for the IndyCar guys and the skill involved, but truthfully I just don’t find some of the road courses to be that exciting, I was actually planning on going to the 2020 race before it was axed from the schedule (and the pandemic ofc) because I had always wanted to after that insane 2017 race. Its such a shame that Nascar with their shitty 550 hp package is the only race left at my home track, and im really guilty and upset that I never got to make it out there for indycar besides free practice in 2013.

And the situation hasn't changed. About ten years ago the local government finally approved widening the road in front of the track...in the wrong direction. It bugs me that they blame the race track at Pocon for the bad accidents that have happened there recently. The Justin Wilson incident was a fluke that could have happened anywhere. I don't know where Henry Surtees was killed in a similar incident, but I bet they didn't close down the track. The Wickens crash was terrible, but I suggest that the culprit wasn't anything inherent in Pocono as a race track but in the design of the cars. I've been watching Indy Car racing since the early 70's, and there have always been bad incidents, but it was a rare thing for most of those years when a car got airborne. This has become very common in recent years, and I'm no expert or aerodynamicist, but it seems to me the best way to prevent Wickens or Kenny Bräck type incidents is to keep the cars from flying through the air. I'm not saying it never happened back in the first 30 years or so I watched Indy Car or CART (for instance, Jeff Krosnoff), but now it seems to happen at least once a race when the race is at an oval. Some have even suggested eliminating oval tracks, but in that case, they should just cancel the series because it won't be Indy Cars. I don't know if it's the high speed or the design of the cars or a combination, but airborne cars being common place is something that has happened in the last 20 years, and it's not the fault of Pocono Raceway.

Pocono was built for open wheel racing, not NASCAR.
So disappointed that Pocono is once again off the schedule.
Having no IndyCar races in the Northeast is disgraceful.
The old triple crown of Indy, Michigan (after Ontario) and Pocono was something very special.
Pocono had some bad luck recently but the track is not too dangerous, that's a silly argument.
Glad we were able to make the last IndyCar race in August, we had a great time even with the rain.

I think you may see it back if Pocono improves the fencing. How can you have 2 years in a row where you repair a fence with chicken wire? That's unacceptable for a track the size of Pocono. You think you'd see Indy or Daytona do that shit?
My guess is that it will be back in a year or 2. Especially if the aeroscreens are a success.
Personally I'd rather see them back at New Hampshire. Their return in 2011 was marred by rain all week and now since New Hampshire only has 1 cup date, they'll be wanting to fill gaps.
