Literally my dream car in my dream engine. Perfect combination of agility, usability and fun!! Thank you so much for allowing us a look at your machine. Such a great drive. Thank you @NM2255 for bringing us this video!
That may be one of the best sounding 4-cyl engines I've heard. I've seen other videos of the Type R with the K20 and they don't sound anywhere near the same.
Another time, hoping this is the last: read the previous comments, these laps were just sightseeing! The car had a bad suspensions setup (worse than the original), no lsd, no swirlp pot (you can hear the lack of fuel on first left corner), original braker, 20.000km semislick tyres, with 3° ambient temperature. The car has Hondata K-Pro III, Vtec kick at 4700 rpm. Now the car has bigger new tyres, Quaife lsd, perfect suspensions setup (Nitron Trackday), new brakes (new pads, bigger pump, 4 pot front-2pot rear, ripartitor), new dashboard (Aim Mxl), new steering wheel, etc etc etc.. Now the cars it's even more difficult to push at its limits.. :)
Just for information: this is a 2002 S2 Elise, the early model after S1 Elise. It came with a Rover K18 engine, capable of 120/122hp, 5 gears. If you read about competition in Uk, many people swap Rover and Toyota (lot of troubles with gearbox) with Honda K20A2 (the same of Acura Rsx-S but with less power because of PRB manifolds instead of RBC). It's very different from FN2 (S2000) and has a lot of potential in supercharged or turbocharged tuning. :)
Best lap of the day was 1.13.05 made by a Honda supercharged K20A2 340R, developing about 340hp on 750kg (driver included)..now my Elise is about 250hp and 760kg excluding driver and passenger. The sound of Vtec (set @ 4800 rpm) is fantastic! Limiter @ 8600, but dash isn't precise (about 500rpm error).
Blox air filter with velocity stack, 64.5mm throttle body (stock 61mm), Rbc manifolds. Stock engine internals, stock european gearbox (K20A2), complete 2.5" exhaust with no catalizer. Hondata K-Pro. Now i setted geometry and suspensions, also adding a wide band controller. :)
Ops, that's my car! :D Thank you NM for the vid! First time in Varano and first time on a track like this with after engine's tuning, tyres and suspensions to be checked and lack of differential! :) Don't take this vid as a competition, it's only "sightseeing"! :D Just take it for the sound! :)
Yeah the 2ZZ-GE is in the Corolla and the Celica, it produces around 192hp and has what us Toyota guys call lift, which is essentially VTEC and it kicks in about 6200 rpm all the way up to 8200. Pretty nippy little thing.
The K20 is an amazing engine... it's full potential is brought out when it's dropped in an MR chassis.. very linear and smooth power delivery. Even by today's standards it's impressive... has me eager to see what Honda might do next as this old engine needs a replacement.. badly, it's been put out of production I think.
If you knew a thing about this engine you d be able to hear that the VTEC engagement point is set way lower on the rpms and he is almost always in VTEC.
We tried many positions, best seemed to be just in front of the left air scoop but it wat too exposed to dust and mud (after 1000 miles i had to clean).Keeping it near the engine there is much air flow from the scoops to the engine cover and if you touch the filter after a session you don't feel it hot. Even the fuel rail near the engine is cold. :)
The gearbox is stock, engine K20A2 (European) with Hondata K-Pro, Rbc manifolds, 64.5mm throttle body (instead of 61mm), Blox air filter (with velocity stack) and 2.5" complete exhaust. Just soft tuning. :)
It's a Stark Automotive conversion kit, with exhaust manifolds and decat 2.75". The silencer is custom made 2.5", similar to those for motorbikes. :) (steelartmarmitte)
You think more or less? Before RBC manifolds, upgraded throttle body, air filter and with another ecu (DTA S60 Pro) it was 235hp at the flywheel. Now it should have al least 20hp more, but i still don't have a benchmark. If you watch this: /watch?v=CBwkhuFUok4 i overtake an RGB Exige, tuned for 275hp (284peak)..but heavier (about 200kg more than mine).
Amazing match up; the Lotus seems to handle effortlessly. The driver seems to drive it so easily especially with the powerful k20a. He doesn't need to push the car to its limit in order to get the best time and performance. Btw, is the engine tuned by flashpro or hondata because the VTEC sounds earlier at 4400rpm~?
It's not broken, it's not connected: in this conversion all is driven by Honda ecu but the dash is still for the previous Rover ecu.The speedometer takes signal from the original ecu and doesn't work with Honda.Next step will be Aim Mxl and all will work. :) Now I'm using a gps speedometer just for highway use (expecially for speed-trap :)..i a trackday you don't need a speedometer :) (as for motorcycle)
Perfect Honda induction / metallic sound -- like a NSX Type R with two less cylinders! How'd you get it to sound so good -- without the "rasp" that is quite easy to get with these engines and aftermarket exhausts? :)
oh please :-) i have a lp560 myself, a friend of mine several AMG and Ferrari's. But the NA 2.0 Displacement class is ruled by Honda. No discussion! ;)
Unitl now, i have never take times or max speed...the gearbox is set to reach almost 270km/h (167mph) but the 6th gear is longer..i should need a very long straight to reach it! Information from conversion kit's site speaks about 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds (Stark Automotive) but for an S1 model (lighter)..but with PRB manifolds and stock throttle body.I think time will be similar, but starting from zero is very difficult depending by grip, weather, temperature, ecc ecc... :)
Curious to know how they figure out how to do stuff like this. Its pretty badass, although I would have swapped it with an f20, but that's just my preference, they make about the same power anyway
An F20 engine/gearbox sits longitudinally so it wouldn't fit unless you used a different gearbox with some sort of adaptor, but then space is at a premium in an elise. In my opinion the K20 is a better powerplant anyway - it's pretty much based on the F20 but with variable intake and exhaust timing for a wider powerband. The K20 is newer, more efficient and responds really well to N/A tuning.
I will admit this is the first Honda motor powered car I liked the sound of. I swear it doesn't sound as good in a Honda, probably just the different way the exhaust had to be set up
Why is the Pod Filter so exposed to heatsoaking from the engine? is there any way to mount it in a box and duct air from the rear left wheel arch? VTEC Yo!!
I have a supercharged Honda k20 in my S1 Exige. All is does is whine a lot, and sounds like a honda- the car goes like hell though! v8's v12's, now, they sound magnificent! If you can't heel and toe then you are only half a driver.
Lotus doesn't produce engine (for elise and exige). They use Rover 1.8L K18 (120-147-160hp) for S1-S2 Elise and Toyota 1.8L 2ZZ-GE for Elise R and for all Exiges. There is also a 1.6L 135hp Toyota engine for the latest models. (I'm speaking about european versions..mine for example is from 2002 and had a K18 Rover).
It was hardly a Corolla engine, it was the one from the Toyota Celica GT-S which is a pretty snappy engine ( I had one ). That honda engine does sound sweet tho.
Not sure if believe...Also, as I said, all of the Honda's that I HAVE DRIVEN have sucked. That doesn't mean they all suck. The Honda S2000, for example, is badass.
Nice car, but have you considered maybe taking a driving lesson? You need to rev match when downshifting, so as not to upset the car's balance while taking turns.
Literally my dream car in my dream engine. Perfect combination of agility, usability and fun!! Thank you so much for allowing us a look at your machine. Such a great drive. Thank you @NM2255 for bringing us this video!

That's a good 50 horsepower boost, nice! It makes for one hell of a power to weight ratio, and it sounds great. Nicely done!
Mini NSX :D
best description I've ever seen for this swap lol
I love how you can hear the Vtec engage...
Just like my type s!!
guy can't even drive.

Sounds pretty good! Never rally thought of doing a K20 swap in a new gen Lotus! Great lapping even if it was sight seeing!

That's pretty awesome, K20's are such good sounding engines.
That rev limiter at 3:30 sounds sooo beautiful haha, awesome video man!
Wow that thing is FAST! Cool video!

nice sound, and nice angle for the camera

Happy? Now you got a boring k24 that redlines at 7800 rpm and a turbo k20 that doesn’t even feel like a Honda
@@dannyboy768 Tighter emission regulations mean the NA engines are very sadly going out. :(
B16, B18, K20, H22, F20C, all those engines are Masterpieces in their classes.
Should stay higher in the rpms and stay in vtec, agree with heel toe or double clutching
If you knew a thing about this engine you d be able to hear that the VTEC engagement point is set way lower on the rpms and he is almost always in VTEC.
love that sound of the vtec crossover! sounds mad
We tried many positions, best seemed to be just in front of the left air scoop but it wat too exposed to dust and mud (after 1000 miles i had to clean).Keeping it near the engine there is much air flow from the scoops to the engine cover and if you touch the filter after a session you don't feel it hot. that sounds amazing.
Congrats on the car, Mattia, it's really good. Nice driving as well ;)

I love the way that motor sounds....amazing...
The VTEC sounds amazing!!!
Nice! Even the car owner is posting here!
It's a Stark Automotive conversion kit, with exhaust manifolds and decat 2.75". The silencer is custom made 2.5", similar to those for motorbikes. :) (steelartmarmitte)
Nice lotus, the engine looks nice and snugg in there. Easy Install or not?
Awesome video! sounds much better then the Stock Elise engine! btw which track is this?
Sweet video mate, great sounds !
It's a 2002 S2 Rover Elise, original engine was the K18 Rover 122hp :)

Makes me really miss my '08Civic Si Coupe!! Was a screamer!

greatest mid engined application of a honda 4 cylinder? i think so!

Nice car and nice bike judging by your nickname
Sounds sooooo much better than the Toyota engines they're using! 10/10!

Great video
Why is the Pod Filter so exposed to heatsoaking from the engine? is there any way to mount it in a box and duct air from the rear left wheel arch?
VTEC Yo!!
That sounds evil and pretty good job at the track;)
is that the oil light coming on during high g left turns or am i just seeing things?
italian? if not i translate.

sweet car and great engine. But this guy should Heel-and-toe when downshifting, it will make a much faster lap.
Nearly lost it in that bend, very brave
interesting engine swap
Lotus doesn't produce engine (for elise and exige). They use Rover 1.8L K18 (120-147-160hp) for S1-S2 Elise and Toyota 1.8L 2ZZ-GE for Elise R and for all Exiges. There is also a 1.6L 135hp Toyota engine for the latest models.

professional video..........perfect ...bravoooo
It seems like the driver isn't doing heel and toe...
Dis is why we should buy new cars Lol
wonderful!!! r u sure about the 250 hp??? i don't think so ^^
Love that sound
Love it! why don't Lotus just buy these engines ? so much better!
i can listen this engine sound til i die
it might actually be a Rover 1.8L engine depending on model... that's stock BTW.
Is that your car Nick?

VTEC just kicked in YO!
:)
awesome car and video... just need to work on the heel-and-toe
I like POV videos :D
Because the Honda engine is better than the stock engine and sounds miles better.
He was drifting well for a car with little power on a dry track.
Vtec?
How bout putting in a hemi?
Nice car, but have you considered maybe taking a driving lesson? You need to rev match when downshifting, so as not to upset the car's balance while taking turns.
Sweet video matr, like immrer.
He would keep it higher in the revs, but his ears hurt
sounds faster!
That slide at 2:03
Buffff perfecto! :P
this is what i guessed, but thank you, that you explained it.... ;)
Wow a lotus owner who can't heel toe or even just rev match... speechless
0:32 vtec kicked in yo
this vtec sound !!!
K20 and K24 should be in every car ever made..haha
