Chess but you can only take pieces identical to yours. Ex. Bishops can take bishops, and pawns can take pawns. If you promote a pawn to a queen, the queen acts like a rook or a bishop. TWIN CHESS

I thought of a variation which might be somewhat easier, in which pieces cannot take ones more powerful than themselves, so bishops and knights can't take queens or rooks, and rooks can't take queens. Pawns can only take other pawns, and kings can take anything.
Another version that has occurred to me would be to allow pieces to capture more powerful ones provided they have 'support' from another piece that is attacking the same square.

Martin's artillery abilities seem to be on a par with his chess abilities.
Play 2 games against Martin simultaneously. If Martin captures a piece in one game, the corresponding piece in the other game is frozen and cannot be moved for the rest of the game.

@Karolina Bender Nah, that one he needed to make identical moves in both games. And that one was virtually impossible, because as soon as Martin did anything differently between the two, it became almost unplayable.
Martin may not be a GM, but he’s definitely got NAVY Seal potential.

Hypothetical situation: you move, then Martin moves, then Martins fires his canon, which destroys one of your pieces but this results in a discovered check for you. Acording to the states rules, you have the next move. What then? Is this instant win?

Great editing on this one. Also, chess (against Nelson) but the king cannot afford this war and the longer it goes on, the further the kingdom will sink into economic ruin and despair. Revolution will begin on move 10 as your pawns will no longer move or capture unless one of your pieces is directly behind him forcing him to fight, but knights, bishops, and rooks will no longer fight valiantly and will only move or capture up to three squares away. Then, starting on move 20, knights, bishops, and rooks will no longer move at all unless the king or queen is directly behind him forcing him to fight. Then, starting on move 30, the entire army (or what's left of it, anyway) will refuse to move whatsoever as they have been starved out and defected to the other side, leaving you with only a king and queen. If the war doesn't end on or before move 40, your king and queen surrender and are exiled to the Egmont Islands.

Idea for chest against Martin: Your pieces have a conscience. After making a capture, the piece feels so bad about what it's done that it can't move for the rest of the game.
Variation of this idea: Nelson Bot has a cannon, but he fires twice so long as the queen is alive.
This was great fun! I have a modified idea of the cannon vs. Stockfish idea:
You, the legendary Bobby Fisherman, have brought 9 points worth of 'harpoons' to take down the mighty Stockfish that has been harassing your friends. At the end of your turn, you may remove a piece or pawn with value less than the number of 'harpoons' you have. However, if you have less than your starting number of points, you can have your first mate, Martin, take a turn to have up to two additional points available the following turn.
I think it isn't that hard to defeat stockfish being a queen up
a variation to the cannon vs Martin: any square under fire by the cannon will be unusable by Nelson for the remainder of the game because Martin has magical incendiary cannon balls. Of course Martin's pieces and pawns are immune

Chess but Martin changed his weapon - it's a taser now. Like the cannon when he ends his turn 3 (or more if it's too easy) random squares get electrified, meaning your pieces can't go to that square and if your piece is on the chosen square it can't move.

I would like to modify this challenge slightly. Instead of exploding gunpowder, Martin's cannonballs are filled with a gaseous psychedelic drug that converts any pieces it hits to Martin's side. The king will be immune. Are you strong enough to handle defectors?

Chess against Martin but your pieces are greedy businessmen - if they can capture, they must.
Chess vs Martin, but your army is tied together. Pieces/pawns must be connected to all of the others only through horizontally vertically, or diagonally adjacent squares. There can no isolated groups.
How about this, but the cannon is upgraded to hit all adjacent squares as well, and you can lower the fire rate.
What happens if Martin shoots a piece that was blocking a check? Let's imagine the black king is on a3, a white rook is on a1 and a white pawn on a2 and the pawn gets shot? Now black is in check but it's white's turn.

Same rules applied to this but it can affect you and your opponent, this time you go against stockfish
If you want to make it slightly different from this version, maybe give the cannon splash damage a 2x2 or a 3x3 splash range

Challenge: Chess but the king is Canadian
You have to play against martin, but your king is very polite. You cannot capture any of martin's "innocent" pieces. Martin's king, however, is always non-innocent, as it thinks maple syrup doesn't taste nice. An innocent piece is a piece that has not captured any of your pieces, and has not entered your territory. Your territory includes any squares on the 3rd, 2nd, or 1st rank. You also cannot sacrifice any of your pieces, or put any of your pieces on squares where they are under attack. You cannot block checks. If your only legal moves include breaking the rules, you loose. Pawns do not count in this challenge. If you find it too easy, you can choose to include pawns.

Chess, but Martin is a crazy scientist. Everytime he captures one of your pieces, all your pieces in a 3x3 area can't move (The center of the area is the piece Martin captured with). You can change it to a 5x5 if it's too easy.

Chess, but Martin leaves landmines on the square he moves a piece from. Your pieces explode upon touching it, but since Martin's pieces have a flag kimono on, they are immune to mines.
Now the cannon-ball is bigger and destroys 3×3 every time Martin moves

My spin on this would be to something like each move when it's Nelson's turn to play spin a wheel containing all of Martin's pieces (a-h Pawns, b/w Bishops, c/f Knights, a/h Rooks, Queen, King), whichever piece is landed on upgrades a tier. A Pawn's first tier can be chosen by Nelson as Bishop or Knight, a Knight/Bishop and any pawn that upgraded to one landed on again will upgrade to Rook, Rooks to Queens. Landing on the Queen will spawn a new Queen on the board (spawns closest possible adjacent square(s) to Martin's King). Landing King is perhaps Nelson's saving grace, hit that and a Queen/piece of Nelson's choosing can be removed from the board completely (except King of course).
Main problems with my proposal are probably trying to remember which specific piece is which after a number of moves and upgrades, and it just might become super hard (basically impossible, even against Martin) super fast with Black Queens all over depending on the spins.
Paired chess: if Martin takes a piece their twin or the other rook,bishop or knight gets captured to, of course pawns are not affected by this rule

You should do this again, but instead of the specific tiles, you have the spinner to fire the cannon from a row, taking out the topmost piece from that row

2. When a piece is casted a spell on, you will spin another wheel to decide which spell he uses. These are the four spells (optional):
- The FREEZE Spell- Freezes the piece for 5 moves
- DISAPPEARING Spell- The piece will be taken away from the board
- RELOCATION Spell- The piece will be relocated to another square (using a wheel)
- HYPNOTIC Spell- Hypnotizes the piece ( will be used to take away another piece using a wheel)

Chess but you can only move your ...s when Martin does. For example, if Martin moves a knight, you have to move a knight. If Martin moves a rook, then you have to move a rook.

You have to checkmate martin, while every piece is on the its homesquare, and you have to promote 8 pawns into queens and return them to their homesquares as well.
Martin cannot sacrifice or capture anything! Hint: Checkmate will be a discovered attack while moving a knight to its homesquare.
