Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. The rule ought to be "the pieces should be connected at the end of your turn". Otherwise, you might even have to disallow moves like Ra1-h1 unless the chain covers the entire first rank.

I tried it myself against Martin - took me 117 moves, but I did it. It's more annoying than anything, tbh - I made a lot of really dumb moves to try to keep everything connected. I did follow the hard-mode version of the challenge, though - my pieces had to stay connected at all times, including on Martin's moves. His captures could break my connection, even if I could reconnect by recapturing. (I started throwing away a lot of pieces on the edges to make it easier, tbh.)
