  • On Saturday's show LA Flights had a rare visitor. We saw a rare departure of a 48 year old DC-10. Joining LA Flights, in the JumpSeat, for the entire day was Captain Ken. Saturday was a day full of worthy highlights, including a Shine The Light from the flight crew of Lufthansa's 457.

      Unfortunately, the plane killed too many domestic passengers and was a staple of crashes in the 1970's and 80's. The plane was prone to hydraulic failures like the infamous Souix City crash of flight 232. As such, it was removed from passenger service and used for cargo and tankers.

    • @mcdonnell-douglasdc-1056
      @mcdonnell-douglasdc-1056 Год назад +4

      @@peteanddrake4242Not really. It was phased out of passenger service because the plane is too old. Why use the DC-10 when you've got a plethora of options like the A330 and the A350, Boeing 777 and 787, etc. All these planes are more cost-effective to operate and maintain.
      If the DC-10 were to be retired due to its less than stellar safety record, it would've been out of passenger service long before the 2000s even arrived. United Airlines operated the DC-10 until 2001, Northwest Airlines last operated the trijet in 2007, and passenger service ended last 2014.

      @mcdonnell-douglasdc-1056 correct, I hate when people say it was the crashes. Most of those crashes where the fault of ground personnel and not the plane itself.

    This is an old -30 series that came from the factory with the extra landing gear (like the MD11), but it was removed to make space for the firefighting tank. Plus, the extra weight is no longer an issue since no seats/baggage/passengers. But it still has the more powerful engines that are known for a certain whine at idle.. which is also heard on 747-200's and the early A300's that have the same engine (GE CF6-50). That whine can be heard here just as they were turning the corner.

      So It Couldnt Land Heavy Then

    • @tankerdriver6329
      @tankerdriver6329 9 месяцев назад

      @@YQRAviation The center gear doesn't bear as much weight as people think. There is a weight penalty (About 10% of the normal max landing weight) for landing with the center gear retracted on most variants of the -30 and -40. It's primary purpose is the extra set of brakes for a high-speed abort/reject on takeoff, increasing MTOW.

    10--Tanker is a private firm that operates a fleet of converted DC-10s. They discharge fire retardant from the tank below the fuselage and work by contract with various agencies fighting forest fires around the country and around the world. One of their pilots is from my town and was once a member of my volunteer fire department in Ligonier, PA.

They still look like high tech machines. We had a tail wind coming back and flew near 700 mph. I asked the pilot if that was possible?? He told me that the speed of sound was 729 at sea level. We were at 40k feet. I loved that plane.

    10 Tanker runs 4 planes. When in air they are TNKR910, 911, 912, and 914. On that flight 911 returned to ABQ where their main base is. 910 is at Roswell, NM. 912 is running out of MWH in Washington. 914 is based in AZ until fire conditions improve running from AZA. They try to keep planes in the most needed areas during fire season so they can respond rapidly to fires. The DC10-30ER's are spread around more since they are the only VLAT's available.

    Had the privilege of sitting in cockpit of a DC 10 on take off from Auckland New Zealand to Sydney. Remember captain held power speed at 150 knots then at 152 nose lifted and we were off . Amazing experience one that will never be repeated now. I had asked flight attendant if it was possible to see cockpit,but either once flight crew had settled into flight or after landing procedures in Sydney. To my surprise got permission while taxing for take off. This memory I'll keep for rest of my life.

    • @mariuskuhrau761
      @mariuskuhrau761 Год назад

      @@Itapirkanmaa2 No, many of the DC10 crashes was due to the left aft faulty cargo door, that have unlatched itself while high in the air. The NTSB have found that it was a design flaw but after Douglas rectified the problem, no more fatal accidents of that type have occurred. But the public and DC10 operators have lost faith in this aircraft and production of the DC10 was stopped. Ps, Only one aircraft crashed with a engine issue and that was at O'Hare airport, when a DC10 left engine was torn off on the takeoff roll. The pilots did follow the instructions of the QRH but that info was incorrect, and led to the airplane to crash and killing everybody on board.

    • @Itapirkanmaa2
      @Itapirkanmaa2 Год назад

      @@mariuskuhrau761 Do your research first.
      There was ONE crash in 1973 related to the cargo door design. The 747 btw had a similar issue with its cargo door.
      The UA 232 crash was due to the engine manufacturer, the AA 191 crash was due to the airline having developed an unapproved procedure to changing the engine.
      Nobody "stopped producing DC-10" until 1989, when the successor MD-11 had been introduced.
