    Heat has personally helped my sanity and has helped me to stay natural. Prior to heat stretching I was experiencing tons of single strand knots. I think blow drying is ok without the flat ironing. I'm bra strap length 4b coarse texture.

    • @luvpinkchic1453
      @luvpinkchic1453 8 лет назад +6

      For me personally: On wash days I would either have my hair blow dried and flat ironed by a professional. Or on wash days I would wear two strand twists as a protective style. I would style my two strand twists in a ponytail or bun. When I wanted to change my look while I had two strand twists in I would wear a half wig. However, since my curls have loosened since the professional flat iron styles, I have experienced less single strand knots. I'm thinking of using curlformers more in my regimen now.

      My hair is a little past arm pit length and its 4b and coarse. I used to have tons of single strand knots which I believe didn't aid in me retaining any length. Also, my hair would dry out easily. I began heat stretching my hair more and I go to the salon every 3-4 months for a silk press and trim. I haven't experience any single strand knots in over a year.

      For a few months I was getting my hair professionally silk pressed back to back to back. I think I will try to go at least 3-4 months in between silk presses too. Since my curl pattern has loosened, less single strand knots...However, the pro is also a con...I lost my true curl pattern...

    • @luvpinkchic1453
      @luvpinkchic1453 8 лет назад +5

      Right now I still have texture...My hair went from 4b/4c to 4a...maybe 3c...However I fear if I get silk presses every two weeks it may become too loose. That's why I'm thinking that when I use heat I may just tension dry or have the professional stylist do a blow dry only...

      I agree with all of you, knots prevent length retention, the only way to prevent knots is by keeping the ends stretched and healthy.

    I've been natural 3 1/2 yrs. I've always heat trained my hair the whole time. I use low blow dry heat and low flat iron heat once a month. My hair is bra strap length. And medium thickness I get so many compliments from women. My hair has out grown both of my girlfriends who have been natural longer than me because they never straighten their hair. I have 4b 4c hair. Yes, heat trained hair is the best kept secret along with braids or twist to allow for rest at times.

      08094denise Doesn't heat training damage your hair? I thought that led to heat damage

      Not if you take all the precautions regarding protecting your gain from heat. My mom had a friend who had long hair down her back and it was ALWAYS straight. I swore she must've had heat damage but one day she wore a wash n go and her hair was so curly and beautiful , no heat damage whatsoever. Her secret, she would use water and a thick orange grease to blowout and flat iron her hair. So I guess you have to know your hair, some peoples hair can take heat and still be very healthy.

    I have 4b hair and my hair loves heat. Shedding is reduced by about 80%. My hair doesn't feel as dry. I've now come to really dislike styling my hair on wet hair. I still do, though. I big chopped in January and my hair is working its way to bra strap length. So heat isn't always bad! My natural hair is thriving and I absolutely attribute it, partially, to me adding heat. Awesome, informative video! Thanks for sharing. :)

      @osimeon00 8 лет назад +23

      @Privat, how are you going to tell someone what their hair likes or dislikes? I didn't know you lived in their scalp. And FYI, I also have 4b hair and my hair THRIVED with heat when I used to use it regularly. I would blow dry and flat iron every two weeks without any issue and had 100% reversion every time. Got rid of my knots, shedding, naps, etc and my hair grew without manipulation. If most naturals understood how to use heat correctly, there wouldn't be so much ignorance and fear

    • @osimeon00
      @osimeon00 8 лет назад +7

      The only reason I stopped using heat was because it took so damn long to do all my hair. More than 5 hours on my feet. I got better shit to do.

      Thank you!!! I wasn't going to warrant her ridiculous comment with a response, but I'm glad you did! Haha! I completely agree with you! I have 100% reversion every time. Like I said... My hair LOVES heat and it keeps my hair healthy. My hair doesn't simply like to be "stretched". I know what I said and I meant what I said...So please... Just stop it. Lol.

    4c low porosity thick thick collar bone length. 1. Every late Saturday night, Hot oil overnight with olive oil put hair in 12 big twist 2. In the early Morning Squeeze in vo5 one twist at a time and carefully detangle, after all 12 are detangled, spray scalp with water and Poo scalp outside the shower. Using handheld shower handle rinse hair well, squeeze in DC to each twist and GHE for 1 hour, get in the shower and do a final rinse to the hair. Spray hair with leave-in of choice, seal with grapeseed oil (secret heat protectant) then blow dry with Revlon brush/dryer on low or cold. After hair is dry spray one twist at a time with two or three shots of heat protectant, comb through, and flat iron ABSOLUTELY ONE PASS 400 degrees. At night: Massage scalp for 5-10 min. rub hands with olive oil and Put hair in 12 big tight twist or braids and wrap the twist around the circumference of the head and use big Bobby pins to secure it for stretch. After twist are wrapped carefully put on a pair of stocking on your head and ease the bobbypins through the holes and wrap the legs around your head. In the morning untwist and shake and lightly separate I DO NOT USE A COMB AT ALL DURING THE WEEK. I do not use a comb again until my hair is hot oiled and has vo5 conditioner added for slip. So I basically wear a straightened twist out all week and twist the hair every night to insure it looks neat everyday. Doing hair once a week keeps hair and ends moisturized. Keeping hair straightened prevents single strand knots which kill retention because your constantly trying to rake through the knots. Doing a nightly twist up, and daily twist out allows you to look super cute without using a comb.

    I feel like God is just blessing you and growing your hair through His power. When I flat iron I get heat damage so I stretch my hair with curlformers but heat stretching is really working for you. I also have scalp issues so if I go longer than a week without washing my hair my scalp starts to smell. I live in a humid climate so I'm sure that contributes to it as well.

    Not using heat is like having long hair and can't show it because your scared of heat. But Me personally heat will damage my hair even more. My hair is dry and I get a lot of split ends. I love your hair though. Keep doing what works for you.

    • @latisha334
      @latisha334 8 лет назад +2

      I was blow drying my hair once/week for about 2 months and I noticed a ton of split ends. I don't even wear my hair straight (flat ironed) but just blow drying made a huge difference.

    • @candlecane
      @candlecane 8 лет назад +1

      + Latisha Lobban Are you saying the blow dryer caused the split ends? I think for 4c hair, it is pointless to heat stretch with a blow dryer. It makes more sense to use a flat iron on very low heat with 1 pass to give the blow out effect. This way, there is less heat going across the strands.

    • @latisha334
      @latisha334 8 лет назад +2

      I think so. That along with sleeping with my hair out at night and neglecting moisturizing quite a bit.
      I trimmed about half an inch and the split ends are gone for now. My hair always smells like its burning when i flat iron :(

    • @DephneAviyah
      @DephneAviyah  8 лет назад +15

      +77deerose sounds like you need intensive moisture in your hair. It generally shouldn't get split ends so much. Mine used to until I started doing deep conditioners every week and steaming it. Also DIY (egg + avocados) protein treatments biweekly can cause a difference Hopefully that can help if you are not already doing that Xx

    Thank you, I have watched several of your videos. You are a blessing. I am just realizing that heat stretching is good for my hair. It prevents the unnecessary breakage that happens while it's coiled. I think I can go 6-8 weeks with my silk press. My natural hair is arm pit length after 2 1/2 years since my BIG chop. Now it's the longest it has ever been. I know it would be longer if I heat stretched. It IS about trial and error, just never give up on your hair journey. Im super motivated to keep learning and growing! Thank you. ♥️

    Watching your professional salon visits, Your stylist was very gentle, even during the blow drying process. I noticed my stylist pulled too much and after going about 3 times, my hair changed. The splitting was all over the actual strand, from top to bottom. I don't think heat is the real problem but the manipulating regardless of using or not. Your hair looks great, keep treating it like silk and it will thrive.

    Our hair will definitely grow using heat as long as you take care of it. The problem I experienced was heat damage to my natural curl pattern. If you don't wear your natural curl pattern then that won't be a problem. I used to get my hair straightened biweekly at a salon and my hair flourished and grew. However, I lost my curls pattern. I haven't flat ironed my hair in 4 years. I will blow dry it occasionally, lol. However, I may flat iron it this winter. I have learned about heat protectants.

    Ok very helpful video and I concur! I have been natural 4.5 years from bald. I was doing great retaining length the first four years HOWEVER this last half year is not working out because I figured out that my hair length needs a new method. I have only recently needed to dust my ends which was unnecessary before but the longer our hair gets it needs a new kinda regimen. The dusting is working but now my hair seems either over moisturized or protein overload and the only balance now is to moisturize then do the tension method and I just tried it tonight for the first time and I think this wAs what I needed to move forward retaining length. My hair is in about fourty tight twist, I plan to tightly wrap my twist every night to get maximum stretch. Then in the morning after my shower, unwrap and put Shea butter on my ends and put tiny rollers on the ends til it's time to go. I honestly plan to do my detangle, poo, DC, and tension blowdry about every "28 days" since I'm not busy at night doing anything else! However if once a month tension bd is not damaging I will figure out something else but I hope a warm tension blowdry once a month will not be too often, I don't flat iron or press. What's your thoughts?

  • @mobutter2879

    I've recently used heat. Caused breakage and thinning. Stretching hair is good but using heat isn't necessary. Heat should be used for just the styles. Like you want to have bone straight hair or whatever. But if you're just looking to reduce tangles there are other methods. One of my favorite styles on my is bone straight half up half down but I need to go at least a full month or so of no heat between. Back to back is hell, my hair is fine & type 4. And this is for all hair types, this is why (no shade) a lot of white girls hair look so fried. Too much heat

    I find the blow dryer to be good for stretching my twist outs and wash and gos bc if i just let it shrink up detangling is a nightmare and i end up losing more hair. I just use low heat though. The flat iron does damage my hair i think maybe because its direct heat on the hair so i stay away from that. Sometimes i want to just too see my true length and do a thorough trim but for now ill stick w the blow dryer. So i agree w you heat may not work for everyone but it helps some of us.

      LaurenNicole It also helps to find out what kind of porosity you have. With high porosity hair, the cuticles are raised much more easily than low or medium porosity hair. Heat can be a tricky thing for those with hi-po hair.

    I'm going to try this in June because my hair 4b/4c is extremely curly and I didnt realize it but it forms all these knots because its curly lol.I don't wear my h air out much anyway, but if i'm going to be protecting it, i might as well have it stretched (it would probably cut down on detangling too). I'm going to try :D

    Dephne, love you lots and have been following you for a while. Very happy that you have given your life and beauty to ministry. You are an inspiration. Please, I want to know how to combat split ends? I trim quite often but my ends are always weak and brittle. What can I do?

    I don't know about this one Daphne. Love your hair, videos and advice, but the jury is still out regarding whether heat is actually *good* for your hair. Right now your hair is thriving, but what about 6 years from now with continued use of heat? I haven't used heat since 1993 and it has nothing to do with heat itself, but rather the means by which we apply it. I'd rather twist or plait than flat iron. I think it's best to take a wait and see approach with this one. It's really too soon to draw definitive conclusions. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, this is an important topic for those of us on a length journey.

    • @HereDiianas

      Hi, I also love doing twists etc... and don't feel the need to flat iron. But when I wear my twists for 4 weeks and I undo them it takes for ever to detangle and my hair is only ar shoulder length. Can you imagine the time for her to to put twists in and then the time to detanhle with that length and thickness. When the hair is straight it can be detangle very quickly. So if I ever decide to let my hair grow so long I know I will use heat more because I don't like to spend a full day just doing my hair.

    • @123leahm
      @123leahm 7 лет назад +4

      HereDianna JoStylin also uses heat to maintain her waist length hair. And another young lady whose video I saw recently (but whose name I can't remember) uses heat to maintain waist length 4c hair. I guess it's one of those things where you have to get to that length to make a true determination of what works. I won't truly know until I get there. I do know that I've seen dozens of videos with BCs/mini chops due to heat damage. I think heat might be a "necessary evil" but I don't think it's accurate to say it's "good" for the hair.

      @kay35rc 6 лет назад

      I totally understand. I have been natural for 5 years and I had to do a second mini/big chop because of heat damage. I am going back to my two strand twists. I like the press look but the heat damage was too much. Now, I am going on a no heat natural hair journey. ☺

      Yes it doesn’t work for everyone. Just like the lack of heat doesn’t work for everyone. It definitely doesn’t work for me. When my hair is curly it breaks off and sheds badly. This is with protective styling. My hair loves the products and everything. I found that when I used heat and restored the protein that I lost while using heat, my hair thrived. I also did not use heat that much. It’s trial and error. ☺️

    In a few more days it will be three years since I got my last relaxer. I feel like my hair should be much longer than it is. Especially after watching your video where you mentioned your hair grew 20" in 3 years. But I know I can't compare my hair journey to anyone else's. I plan on straightening my hair maybe around Christmas or in January when it's not so hot and humidity is low. Your hair is so gorgeous btw! Love all of your videos!

    Just one question Dephne..... With our kinks and curls, do we need to use quite a bit of heat through the year? Shrinkage is real in this journey and we need to live it and love it. I am too scared of heat right now. I find comfort in just doing twists and using thread. Thanks for the video.

    My hands are doing almost all mechanical damage. I need to stop my hair from doubling back on itself and knotting. THAT is going to be the key to length retention. I am almost sure it is. I've seen a few black women with bra strap length hair who blow dry every two weeks. I'm not looking for it to be straight, straight -- just stretched and not knotting and breaking.

    I love blowouts and I think I'm going to do it more just because my hair is longer and I noticed that I loose more hair during detangling when im going from a twist out rather than a blow out.

    Hello, when wearing your hair down, do you have issues with your hair snagging on certain materials your clothes are made of? If so which materials, do you simply decide to wear your hair up? Or, do you simply avoid wearing certain materials? My hair isn't as long as yours but the longer it gets I notice my hair snagging at times.

    from experience i think heat stretching is slowly damaging the hair. it will eventually catch up on the hair. then oneday will have to do a massive trim

    Is the point of heat training to damage the hair so it's straighter even when washed (so it's permanent) or is it just to wear it straight most/all of the time to reduce tangling and breakage, but not to actually damage it with excessive heat? I've seen videos hinting at both so I'm a bit confused.
    Forgive my ignorance, I'm just weirdly curious about this even though I don't have particularly curly hair :P

    Lol I guess I'm going to play scientist while your hair can still seemingly (to the naked eye) still revert back to its "original texture" supposedly unaffected or significantly damaged it still really causes a micro change your texture so yes it causes a line of demarcation so you in fact do need to apply heat to it routinely just like a perm because that micro change will significantly cause negative side effects thinning towards the ends and breakage at the demarcation line. so yes heat isn't the enemy if you keep on Top of it if you wont stay away from it

    God created your hair as a fiber. Therefore harsh heat of squeeze it between two hot plates is not good for it. It is good for you because you like that look. So it is good for your mindset, but not good for your actual God blessed hair. The same as you state that chemicals are in lots of creamy products is the same as the harshness of pressing your hair between two hot plates or running a very hot comb through it. There is a difference between preference and satisfying the flesh and what is actually good for the hair.
