This is a two-handed greatsword, known as Zweihänder in German. Used by the Landsknecht mercenaries in the 15th and 16th century on the battlefield, particularly against pike formations.
The Maximilian is a high end reproduction, and a really impressive sword. Not just due to the sheer size but also the quality of the design, , material, fit and finish.

Actually The Mountain's sword is a type of sword used by the Irish Gallowglass. One can tell by the distinct pommel.
@@matthewmuir8884 Of course! How could we not pay attention to the pommel? The most important and powerful part of a sword!
@Miguel Condal Olivar That it is. After all, without the pommel, one can't end their enemy rightly.
A bit late, but here are some comments:
1) Technically, “Zweihänder” is the German word for a longsword which includes greatswords. In Germany, this type of sword is usually referred to as “Bidenhänder” which is an older word basically meaning the same thing. Though there is a historical name which I personally prefer: “Gassenhauer” which literally translates to “alley hitter” but a better transcription would be “thing with which you can clear entire alleyways”. Ain’t that a cool name?
2) This sword was rather rare among the Landsknecht community. You needed to be specially trained and certified as a master of the Gassenhauer. The widest use of these was seen under the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I (hence the name of this particular sword). A Landsknecht who was a certified master of the Gassenhauer would go on to receive twice the pay as regular mercenaries. Interesting linguistic anecdote: The German word for mercenary is “Söldner” which derives from “Sold” which is the German word for “pay” or “guerdon”. Basically, “Söldner” means “payee”. Wielders of the Gassenhauer were hence called “Doppelsöldner” or “Double-mercenaries / Double-payees”.
3) A regular Landsknecht would wield a pike and as a side arm a short sword called “Katzbalger” which literally translates to “cat-fighter” (not as in fighting a cat but as in performing a fight like two cats would, very close and ferocious and dirty - a cat-fight if you will though that carries different connotations in modern English). That is also a very cool kind of sword which would deserve some love in form of a video. Everyone, please google “Katzbalger” and check out that cool type of sword.
very late
Zero Crimson not if you consider how long it’s been, since these were used. A year more or less is not more than a blink of an eye.
Vielen Dank für die Erklärung!
These are actual fun facts, thanks!
Hah, I always thought that katzbalger got it name from the rounded tip, which makes the blade look like cat's tail.

"Can I wield a greatsword one handed?" Is a question asked my many a power gamer in table top RPGs like D&D. the reason being that wielding two weapons allows one to attack twice in a turn (albeit with a lot of accuracy penalties) instead of once. efficiency-wise despite the penalties, two attacks are still two atacks, and with the correct bonuses you don't feel the penalties at all. therefore you get the question: "can I weild a greatsword one handed"
Always think that it should be yes, you are more likely to miss and they do the same / less damage than using two normal swords
Well, what they call a greatsword is a regular longsword instead of a zweihander so the question is still worth asking.
@@bleakwinter1983 except stuff like great weapon master exists. So players will easily take accuracy penalties to do more damage.

There is an interesting Mercanary class known in german History called a "Doppelsöldner" meaning they were payed double (Sold meaning pay, so "Söldner" ist just a word for a sword for hire) they were heavily armored up the front and were sent in to cut openings into enemy speer walls. There were even very famouse Doppelsöldner Units who were highly decorated veterans and received stupidly high payments if they survived a battle and were able to open up enemy lines.

"The gods gave you two hands, and you use them both for your weapon. I can respect that."
Been thinking about buying this exact sword for about a year now, you sold me on it.
Matt Easton have spoken in the past that he thinks the notion that two handed swords were used to break pike formation is speculation and he does not think this is true. What are your views about it?
Did that idea come from real historical texts or was it just historians guessing?
I agree with Matt that a greatsword wielder would be good to hold a bridge of a entranceway, but what would they do the rest of the battle?
@@fattiger6957 I think what Matt tries to say is that its a sword for very specialised troops that are not at the core of the battle, so their role is not to fight the battle. I imagine for example bodyguards for generals and high ranked officers. And generally they has a sidearm too, for example the landsknecht used to carry a short sword called a katzbalger for close encounters when their pike, musket or two hander wouldn't be best suited.
Well, there is a picture from the battle of Kappel, October 11, 1531, about Zweihanders used against pikes:

@@fattiger6957 That's mostly guesswork from Matt Eastons side because he couldn't quite figure out how the blades would be used against polearms.
However, he has in fact fallen for a certain misconception there as those swords were not supposed to cut through pikes - that would indeed be rather unrealistic. Rather, their purpose was to bind the pikes or knock them out of the way, thus creating space for friendly pikemen to take position. The thing is, if you are waving around a 4 meter long spear, leverage is not really on your side. The thing is rather heavy and already takes a fair bit of power to hold it up for longer periods of time. Now, if someone was to strike it near the tip with, I don't know, maybe a massive, two handed sword, you would get knocked out of position completely, it would even be difficult to hold on to it.
Those swords had the nickname of Gassenhauer which translates roughly to something like alley striker, simply because its strikes could create an alleyway in a crisscross of long, pointy objects.
