The demon remarked that Obanai was very small and decided that she should wait to eat him when he was bigger. She ordered his mouth to be cut wider, all the way to his ears, to match hers due to her "liking" him. The blood that he shed from this procedure was then collected into a chalice that she then drank from. Imprisoned back in his cell with his wound now covered by a bandage, Obanai began only to think of escape and survival upon realizing his fate. He began to scratch away at the lattice of his cell with a stolen hairpin he took from one of his relatives that he would then use during the night in order to prevent anyone from noticing his attempt to escape. Day by day he would be in a constant state of worry and fear, shaking in terror at the possibility of what would happen if the Serpent Demon or his family would discover his attempt at freedom. The only being then that he could trust was a small snake that had somehow strayed into his cage and became his only friend, Kaburamaru. Correct list 1st goes to sanemi - He killed his own mother. All of his siblings died exept for genya. Whats worst is Genya thought sanemi killed his mom for no reason. 2nd goes to tengen - He was forced to kill his brothers and trained really young. 3rd goes to obanai - he was tortured as such a young age and locked up in a cage. He also got his mouth cutten by force which is very traumatising for a child. (can be swapped with tengen) 4th goes to Gyomei - The kids he raised in the orphanage was killed by a demon. The children doesn't even listen to him due to his blind eyes. He punched the demon till morning, its really exhausting but then the child accused gyomei of being a murderer and he was jailed because of the survivor children lying. 5th is idk You guys decide the 5th

giyu's backstory is not as bad as these, but how he feels about it is what makes it really sad, the survivor guilt is a really tragic thing, and giyu passed through it two times while being really young, his sister that was going to marry, and a close friend that was really talented and he saw as the real water hashira, making him think that he was to blame for everything
His survivors guilt isn’t as bad as Obanai’s tho. Giyu at the end found peace but with Obanai even if all demons were gone he wouldn’t allow himself to be happy unless he died and was reborn. With the way it was told im not sure but it sounded like even if he survived to the end he would have either disappeared alone and never to be hear from or would have committed suicide
This is true considering Giyuu being accused to be crazy by the villagers at their village and being sent to a doctor and also almost dying trying to run away, and when he finally found peace with Sabito, Sabito dies trying to protect Giyuu once again just like how his sister died trying to protect him....😥

Just saying some backstories Mitsuri: Everyone has really sad backstories to like mitsuri thought that her muscles was a sin and that she wasn't perfect Sooo she dyed her hair black..she only hoped to find love risking her life as an hashira. BROO EVERYONE HAS SAD BACKSTORIES I CANT EVEN 😕 Shinobu: she lived an normal life whit her family. But one day a demon attacked them the only surviving was kanae and shinobu she lost all the persons under her training idk what it was again.. She hoped to get stronger by joining the demon slayer corps inspired by gyomei hijema idk if that was the name)who rescued them.also kanae got killed when she became a hashira by douma. Sanemi: Their mother was going out but Then there was a knock on the door. Sanemi told his siblings to not open the door. But did still their mother was turned into a demon. She killed most of them but not genya and sanemi. but Sanemi tried to protect them. He had no choice but killing his own mother. And genya deeply got mad at sanemi but he wanted to say sorry cuz he was stressed and shocked. The worst thing is that his father was abusive and their mother always protected them. When sanemi died he saw his mother in the gateway and sanemi told her that he would carry her to hell..but his father pushed him down to earth saying that he isn't going anywhere I think..sad ikr? Obanai: at a very young age he was trapped inside a cage given food everyday being a sacrifice for his aunts and families. he lived by rich and stolen people's food and what I mean by sacrifice is that a demon was about to kill obanai but since he had special eyes he was spared til he was older to be eaten thats how he meet his snake it was from the snake demon..he also got his mouth ripped and the demon drank the blood..once he tried to escape the demon saw him but luckily rengoku the flame pillar saved the day but his aunt/sis idk got mad and said you were meant to be a sacrifice the demon killed everyone. Obanai carried that on his shoulders and thought if I join the demon slayer corps..maybe I can try to save others lifes maybe feeling better. Gyomei: soo Imma make this short One day an demon came in but gyomei told them to stay behind him for protection they didn't listen due to his blind eyes and got killed but gyoemi managed to keep the demon till sunrise so there wasn't anything left than dead bodies but there was 1 little girl who listened and didn't get killed but the little girl accused gyomei for killing all the dead children she was very little so she couldn't understand. He was Sent to jail for execution luckily ubushyaki knew he was trying to save them he got out of jail and trained. But when he died the children said to him in the gateway that They wanted to protect him bc he was blind.

He was abused physically and mentally by his father, had nobody to help him learn stuff so had to do his own studies and help senjuro, watched his mother die, watched his father break down into depression, was neglected of proper health, had to protect his drunk father and kid brother, had to fulfill his promise to his mother, wanted to become a hashira, didnt have a disciple, had to fight demons off before the age of 10, had to bust his eardrums just to live, was shot by a demon multiple times and almost died if it wasnt for mitsuri, had to learn flame breathing all on his own, all within his kid/teenager years.
giyuu tomioka backstory: (giyuu tomioka is a orphan btw) so, before his sisters wedding a demon came and his sister hid giyuu tomioka. his sisters name is tsutako. tsutako then sacrificed her life so she could protect giyuu tomioka, her younger brother. after giyuu tomioka witnessed that scene, he went to tell and warn his village about the demon. although, his village did not believe the young boy giyuu tomioka because since he was young they thought he was hallucinating and mentally ill. not one single person believed him. after that, he ran away from his village in fear. after he ran away, he came in counter with urokodaki. urokodaki saved giyuu tomioka and raised him. while raising him, giyuu tomioka met a friend also training with urokodaki named sabito. sabito was very kind hearted. they both were best friends and practiced hard and then they eventually both mastered water breathing. they cut the hardest rock to currently exist in order to pass and make it to the final selection. they entered the final selection together and sabito killed every single demon in the final selection to protect giyuu tomioka except for one demon called the hand demon. the hand demons neck was super stronger that a new demon slayer barely had a chance to cut it and sabito encountered it. sabito put up a good fight, but ended up getting his head smashed. giyuu tomioka didnt see his head getting smashed because he ran away. the hand demon was the only demon that survived the final selection. after that, giyuu tomioka was basically emotionless not showing any emotion except anger towards tanjiro. although.. after sabito died, giyuu tomioka became the water hashira and ended up being the 3rd strongest hashira with great potential which is hard to get. and also after sabito and tsutakos death they encouraged him to train hard. he ended up being one of the 3 hashiras surviving the final battle with muzan along with uzui tengen and sanemi shinazugawa. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ muichiro tokito backstory: muichiro tokito grew up in a small cabin. muichiro tokito has a brother names yuichiro and his mother was sick so his father was collecting herbs for her. while searching for herbs, his father stepped on a block that wasnt sturdy and fell off a cliff. after that, since muichiro tokitos mother didnt have any herbs to cure her sickness, she shortly died later due to her sickness. when they died, muichiro tokito and yuichiro tokito both worked hard and collected wood but… one day, a demon visited there house to say hello.. the demon was about to attack muichiro tokito but muichiro tokitos brother, yuichiro tokito, ran infront of muichiro tokito. since yuichiro tokito ran infront of muichiro tokito, his arm got sliced off due to the demons hard fist. yuichiro tokito felt so much pain at that time. muichiro tokito, caring for his brother, carried him to a corner to get away from the demon but the demon went towards them. muichiro tokito didnt know what to do. and then suddenly.. a scream of anger came out of muichiro tokitos mouth. muichiro tokito was blinded for a few seconds, and then when muichiro tokito could see again muichiro tokito saw himself standing outside infront of the demon with wood stabbed into the dmeons arms and legs. the demons head was stabbed off with a piece of wood but the demon didnt die since it wasnt a nirchin blade but instead suffered until the sun could come up and burn the demon to death. the demon that killed muichiro tokitos brother had died due to sun and muichiro tokito. eventually.. muichiro tokito became a hashira at 13 years old. muichiro tokito was the 5th strongest hashira yet the youngest. but, later on sadly muichiro tokito got split in half by uppermoon 1, kokushibo. but, muichiro tokito was kokushibos descendant. and in the end kokushibo got killed by sanemi and gyomei.
Sanemi was forced to kill his mother who turned demon, all his siblings died except Genya.. Genya thought that Sanemi killed their mom for no reason.... And after all that "My brother, is the Nicest person in the world..." That broke my heart... They all have incredibly sad backstories.... But for me, Sanemi's story is almost too much...
Obanai should be on no. 1. He spent 12 years in a cage, no one loved him except Kaburamaru. He was always scared. At the age of 12 his mouth got cut by his own family. He still has the guilt that he had such an awful family. He even said he feels like his dead family still haunts him. He thinks he doesn't deserve Mitsuri due to his corrupted blood.
Giyu: lost his sister in a demon attack lost his best friend in the final and calls himself the fake hashira Muichiro: lost his family then he and his brother saw the hashira leader wife and asked them if they wanted to become demon slayers muichiro didnt want to because they don’t get anything if they save people but his brother wanted to but one night a demon came and ripped off muichiro brother arm off muichiro used all the tools to kill the demon but it was to late and muichiro’s brother died Tengen: lost all his family members but his younger member due to fighting to the death what his father said Gyomei: had a rare disease leading to his blindness after that he used to raise kids but a kid took a demon to the temple and killed all but one little one the little one tried to say the demon did it but the people thought she was saying it was gyomei he killed the demon Sanemi: had a family but one night a demon came since sanemi has a rare blood that draw demons to his house his dad died but then the mom didn’t return to the house sanemi told his little brother genya he will go to find her sanemi saw that his mom turned into a demon sanemi fought back until the sun came out and killed her Mitsuri: mitsuri was born with such a gift one time when she was little she was carrying a huge rock her mom was frecked out she did that her hair color was from eating sakura mochi it’s a pink cake she ate it 170 a day for eight months but then when she tried to get married a lot of men didn’t want her because she ate more then a normal person and her unlike hair color she tried to die her hair black and eat less after that one man wanted her but she was unhappy with it so she is just a normal girl again Shinobu: shinobu was raised in a wealthy family but one night a demon attacked but the stone hashira gyomei saved shinobu and her older sister kanae in the nick of time shinobu and kanae wanted to become demon slayers to prevent from people suffering like this so they begged gyomei to make them demon slayers after a few days they became demon slayers one day while walking on a bridge kanae saw a man treating her daughter like a servant kanae threw the man’s money in the air so kanae could get the daughter after cleaning her she called it kanao so then kanae got a mission but on the mission kanae was fighting upper moon 6 douma he was 6 back then kanae and douma fought until kanae was severely dead on the spot since then shinobu faked her smile and shows tons of hate on demons Rengoku: he had a pretty good life other then his mom rika died nearly before senjuro(kyojuro rengoku little brother) was born but after the crazy clash with Akaza shinjuro the dad finally started showing respect to his sons Obanai: obanai was born into the family as the only boy in 370 years he was born with eccentric eyes obanai was born into a family who worshipped female snake demon who loved eating babies but the snake demon was interested in him so she let him grow but then the female demon cut his mouth open to look like hers that’s why he wears bandages one night he escaped but the demon saw him and chased him but the former flame hashira shinjuro killed the demon
Obanai’s familly also caged him up and got killed by the demon once he escaped and obanai had to deal with the guilt of the murder of an entire clan because his cousin shoved the blame onto him
I understand Gyomei and Sanemi, but I don't think any other hashira has a sadder backstory than Giyuu. The guy lost literally everyone to the point he doesn't want to make friends anymore to not feel that pain again. Sanemi at least has his brother and Gyomei managed to somewhat recover from his past. Obanai and Muichiro both have also recovered from their because they found people that care about them.
Sanemi doesn’t have his brother anymore. Giyu at least found Urokodaki and became family with Tanjiro and the others, Sanemi was alone almost his entire life until he found Kanae and his friend that became like a brother to him, but they ended up dying as well. After that he was basically alone until he died.
Ranking hashiras back stories from least sad to the saddest 9. Mitsuri Kanroji She actually grew up in a loving household with decent wealth and two cats. The only sad part is that due to her pink hair everyone broke her heart and rejected her. 8. Kyojuro Rengoku His mom sadly died and his father turned out to be abusive but he had company by his little brother and they managed to push through. 7. Shinobu Kocho She saw her sister die in front of her eyes after a long fight with upper moon 2. So she was stuck with no money and another young sister (Kanao) that didn't even speak. Luckily they joined the demon slayer corps and survived. 6. Gyomei Himejima Gyomei grew up as a blind orphan with extraordinary strength, and because he was orphan, he wanted to protect all the other orphans in need. So he opened a daycare with 8 children in it, and everything was going well. Until one day, a kid named Kaigaku broke the rules of the daycare and went out at night, which led to him encountering a demon. In order to survive, Kaigaku told the demon the location of the daycare and ran away. The demon found the daycare and killed all the children while Gyomei was asleep. He woke up and he was fueled with rage and managed to kill a demon with his bare hands. So basically he was just heartbroken bc the children died and he swore to kill all demons. Also Kaigaku turned out to be Zenitsus senpai and the demon Zenitsu fought in the infinity castle. 5. Muichiro Tokito Muichiro grew up an orphan with his brother Yuichiro in the mountains. A young lady from the Ubuyashiki residence found them and used to check up on them and give them some food. One day though, a demon attacked them and his brother, Yuichiro, managed to protect him and Muichiro saw his brother die in front of his eyes. The difference between him and Shinobu is he was in rough condition with only one brother. Then the lady actually found muichiro injured right there, but rescued him. 4. Tengen Uzui Tengen grew up in a family of 8 brothers. His father though hosted a competition where the siblings had to kill each other as some competition. They were in disguise though, so they didn't know they were killing each other. Tengen ended up winning and finding out because he unmasked the dude he just killed and saw he was his brother. So tengen killed his father right on the spot. He then found his 3 wives and pushed through. 3. Giyu Tomioka Giyu saw his sister die in front of him at her wedding day. He then got rescued by Urukodaki with his friend sabito. At final selection, sabito saved everyone but died to the hands demon, which tanjiro killed later on. Giyu was broken and had the guilt on him his entire life. 2. Sanemi Shinazugawa Sanemi grew up in a poor family of 5 siblings and his mother only. One day, his mother somehow became a demon and killed everyone, but sanemi saved genya in time by killing the mom. So he saw half of his family die, including he killed his mom and got blamed for it too. 1. Obanai Iguro He grew up 65% of his life in a cage while being tortured with barely any food and he got his mouth cut to the ears. He managed to escape with a snake named kabarumaru, but the demon chased him and Shinjuro Rengoku (Rengokus dad) saved him and killed the demon. He swore to kill all demons and became friends with Rengoku due to his fathers acts. This took me 30 mins to write pls like-
I don’t think many people see the whole thing,they all have sad backstories,but not all of them fully recovered,that’s also what matters,giyuu never recovered completely,and wishes he’s dead cause he could plot save sabito,while other hashira backstories are very sad,they’ve all recovered from it
In my opinion I think obanai's was the saddest because he spent the first 12 years of his life in a cage being tortured and used for his own beauty until eventually they got a bit cocky and slit his mouth. Apparently he is still traumatised from this experience and has become a lot more cautious ever since the experience.

@@TXC12480yeah u could say that, the only real reason as why I had Sanemi and Muichiro as my top, was not just the hardship they went through, they actually had something that pushed them to be better, to be stronger, for Tokito it was losing his brother, his mother, and his father, after losing what he held dear he lost all emotion, and his character development was amazing, from being a emotionless teen, to becoming more fluent with emotions, same with Kanao, on the other hand Sanemi was forced to kill his own mother, and for that he lost all his siblings and even lost genyas trust at that time, so that’s why he became such a hot head, and was so ill mannered, and with his character development he was able to express his emotions a lot better by the end, and even made up with his brother in genyas dying moments. That’s why I think they have sadder backstories, since it played out through their life, while Obanai was just a slave to women, and bro became scared of women, his backstory is still tragic, but Sanemi and Tokito was up there for me, I would say Himejima has the toughest backstory, let’s just say they all had tragic and tough backstories 😭

Idk how shinobu isnt here. Shinobus sister and family got killed, and that made her lose her actual emotions, And decided to copy her sisters. She even mentioned her past tsugokus died, which made her even rage, but she has to hide it. The fact that she also injected poison in her body to take revenge of her sisters death, is pure dedication. So basically she feels dead inside, just like giyuu.

Muichiro: His mom died of a cold which developed into bronchitis and their dad died when he was trying to find medicine in a storm falling off a cliff so Muichiro and His brother, Yuichiro didn't have parents and one night a demon attacked and Yuichiro tried to protect Muichiro but the demon cut Yuichiro's left arm off and Muichiro in a fit of rage used every tool he could find to kill the demon and after he watched Yuichiro die and later Muichiro loses his memories and goes to join the demon slayer corps Tengen : He has 8 other siblings and tree of them died before reaching 10 years old due to harsh training and with the remaining. 6 of his siblings, their father forced them to kill each other without even knowing who they are killing cause their faces were covered with masks Gyomei : He became blind due to a Bad fever he had as a child and his mom died giving birth to him and his dad died to an epidemic, He lost his other family members due to unknown circumstances. Gyomei grew up with nine children who were orphans and raised them like his family in a temple, but in where they lived the threat of demons was very well known so he always burned wisteria incense at night but one night one of the orphans put out all the wisteria incense and invited a Demon into the temple.he tried protecting them but all of them tried running away and Gyomei thought that the children thought Gyomei couldn't protect them but they were actually trying to distract the demon to let Gyomei live but only the youngest little girl his behind the demon and he beat the demon till the sunrise and after the little girl thought Gyomei was responsible for everyone being killed and told some other people and Gyomei went to jail for a while and after became a hashira Sanemi : Sanemi was the eldest son of seven children and lived with both of his parents. Their father was abusive, constantly lashing out at the children and their mother until one day, he was stabbed and killed by someone with a grudge against him. Then their mom got turned into a demon and killed 5 of the siblings except Sanemi and Genya before his mom could kill Genya Sanemi tackled her with a knife in his hand and he killed his mom but Genya was young at the time and didn't understand and blamed Sanemi for everything so they grew up not talking to each other Pls pin it took a long time
I would say Obanai but not shinobu, Muichiro was below 14 when his family and his brother died and he had no memory of them whatsoever, suffered from amnesia While shinobu did lose her people too but she had her older sister with her for a long time and then kanae and her other students

1st goes to sanemi - He killed his own mother. All of his siblings died exept for genya. Whats worst is Genya thought sanemi killed his mom for no reason.
2nd goes to tengen - He was forced to kill his brothers and trained really young.

giyu's backstory is not as bad as these, but how he feels about it is what makes it really sad, the survivor guilt is a really tragic thing, and giyu passed through it two times while being really young, his sister that was going to marry, and a close friend that was really talented and he saw as the real water hashira, making him think that he was to blame for everything
His survivors guilt isn’t as bad as Obanai’s tho. Giyu at the end found peace but with Obanai even if all demons were gone he wouldn’t allow himself to be happy unless he died and was reborn. With the way it was told im not sure but it sounded like even if he survived to the end he would have either disappeared alone and never to be hear from or would have committed suicide

giyuu tomioka backstory:
(giyuu tomioka is a orphan btw) so, before his sisters wedding a demon came and his sister hid giyuu tomioka. his sisters name is tsutako. tsutako then sacrificed her life so she could protect giyuu tomioka, her younger brother. after giyuu tomioka witnessed that scene, he went to tell and warn his village about the demon. although, his village did not believe the young boy giyuu tomioka because since he was young they thought he was hallucinating and mentally ill. not one single person believed him.
after that, he ran away from his village in fear. after he ran away, he came in counter with urokodaki. urokodaki saved giyuu tomioka and raised him. while raising him, giyuu tomioka met a friend also training with urokodaki named sabito. sabito was very kind hearted. they both were best friends and practiced hard and then they eventually both mastered water breathing. they cut the hardest rock to currently exist in order to pass and make it to the final selection.
they entered the final selection together and sabito killed every single demon in the final selection to protect giyuu tomioka except for one demon called the hand demon. the hand demons neck was super stronger that a new demon slayer barely had a chance to cut it and sabito encountered it. sabito put up a good fight, but ended up getting his head smashed. giyuu tomioka didnt see his head getting smashed because he ran away. the hand demon was the only demon that survived the final selection. after that, giyuu tomioka was basically emotionless not showing any emotion except anger towards tanjiro. although..
after sabito died, giyuu tomioka became the water hashira and ended up being the 3rd strongest hashira with great potential which is hard to get. and also after sabito and tsutakos death they encouraged him to train hard. he ended up being one of the 3 hashiras surviving the final battle with muzan along with uzui tengen and sanemi shinazugawa.

muichiro tokito grew up in a small cabin. muichiro tokito has a brother names yuichiro and his mother was sick so his father was collecting herbs for her. while searching for herbs, his father stepped on a block that wasnt sturdy and fell off a cliff. after that, since muichiro tokitos mother didnt have any herbs to cure her sickness, she shortly died later due to her sickness. when they died, muichiro tokito and yuichiro tokito both worked hard and collected wood but…
one day, a demon visited there house to say hello.. the demon was about to attack muichiro tokito but muichiro tokitos brother, yuichiro tokito, ran infront of muichiro tokito. since yuichiro tokito ran infront of muichiro tokito, his arm got sliced off due to the demons hard fist. yuichiro tokito felt so much pain at that time. muichiro tokito, caring for his brother, carried him to a corner to get away from the demon but the demon went towards them. muichiro tokito didnt know what to do. and then suddenly..
a scream of anger came out of muichiro tokitos mouth. muichiro tokito was blinded for a few seconds, and then when muichiro tokito could see again muichiro tokito saw himself standing outside infront of the demon with wood stabbed into the dmeons arms and legs. the demons head was stabbed off with a piece of wood but the demon didnt die since it wasnt a nirchin blade but instead suffered until the sun could come up and burn the demon to death. the demon that killed muichiro tokitos brother had died due to sun and muichiro tokito. eventually..
muichiro tokito became a hashira at 13 years old. muichiro tokito was the 5th strongest hashira yet the youngest. but, later on sadly muichiro tokito got split in half by uppermoon 1, kokushibo. but, muichiro tokito was kokushibos descendant. and in the end kokushibo got killed by sanemi and gyomei.
mitsuri has an extremely unique backstory, because some can actually relate with her backstory. she was a great inspiration for me

Gyomei: had a rare disease leading to his blindness after that he used to raise kids but a kid took a demon to the temple and killed all but one little one the little one tried to say the demon did it but the people thought she was saying it was gyomei he killed the demon
Sanemi: had a family but one night a demon came since sanemi has a rare blood that draw demons to his house his dad died but then the mom didn’t return to the house sanemi told his little brother genya he will go to find her sanemi saw that his mom turned into a demon sanemi fought back until the sun came out and killed her
Mitsuri: mitsuri was born with such a gift one time when she was little she was carrying a huge rock her mom was frecked out she did that her hair color was from eating sakura mochi it’s a pink cake she ate it 170 a day for eight months but then when she tried to get married a lot of men didn’t want her because she ate more then a normal person and her unlike hair color she tried to die her hair black and eat less after that one man wanted her but she was unhappy with it so she is just a normal girl again
Shinobu: shinobu was raised in a wealthy family but one night a demon attacked but the stone hashira gyomei saved shinobu and her older sister kanae in the nick of time shinobu and kanae wanted to become demon slayers to prevent from people suffering like this so they begged gyomei to make them demon slayers after a few days they became demon slayers one day while walking on a bridge kanae saw a man treating her daughter like a servant kanae threw the man’s money in the air so kanae could get the daughter after cleaning her she called it kanao so then kanae got a mission but on the mission kanae was fighting upper moon 6 douma he was 6 back then kanae and douma fought until kanae was severely dead on the spot since then shinobu faked her smile and shows tons of hate on demons
Rengoku: he had a pretty good life other then his mom rika died nearly before senjuro(kyojuro rengoku little brother) was born but after the crazy clash with Akaza shinjuro the dad finally started showing respect to his sons
Obanai: obanai was born into the family as the only boy in 370 years he was born with eccentric eyes obanai was born into a family who worshipped female snake demon who loved eating babies but the snake demon was interested in him so she let him grow but then the female demon cut his mouth open to look like hers that’s why he wears bandages one night he escaped but the demon saw him and chased him but the former flame hashira shinjuro killed the demon

I understand Gyomei and Sanemi, but I don't think any other hashira has a sadder backstory than Giyuu.
The guy lost literally everyone to the point he doesn't want to make friends anymore to not feel that pain again.
Sanemi at least has his brother and Gyomei managed to somewhat recover from his past.
Obanai and Muichiro both have also recovered from their because they found people that care about them.
Sanemi doesn’t have his brother anymore. Giyu at least found Urokodaki and became family with Tanjiro and the others, Sanemi was alone almost his entire life until he found Kanae and his friend that became like a brother to him, but they ended up dying as well. After that he was basically alone until he died.
Gyomei never really recovered tbf, he still had massive trust issues even after tanjiro

She actually grew up in a loving household with decent wealth and two cats. The only sad part is that due to her pink hair everyone broke her heart and rejected her.
8. Kyojuro Rengoku
His mom sadly died and his father turned out to be abusive but he had company by his little brother and they managed to push through.
7. Shinobu Kocho
She saw her sister die in front of her eyes after a long fight with upper moon 2. So she was stuck with no money and another young sister (Kanao) that didn't even speak. Luckily they joined the demon slayer corps and survived.
6. Gyomei Himejima
Gyomei grew up as a blind orphan with extraordinary strength, and because he was orphan, he wanted to protect all the other orphans in need. So he opened a daycare with 8 children in it, and everything was going well. Until one day, a kid named Kaigaku broke the rules of the daycare and went out at night, which led to him encountering a demon. In order to survive, Kaigaku told the demon the location of the daycare and ran away. The demon found the daycare and killed all the children while Gyomei was asleep. He woke up and he was fueled with rage and managed to kill a demon with his bare hands. So basically he was just heartbroken bc the children died and he swore to kill all demons. Also Kaigaku turned out to be Zenitsus senpai and the demon Zenitsu fought in the infinity castle.
5. Muichiro Tokito
Muichiro grew up an orphan with his brother Yuichiro in the mountains. A young lady from the Ubuyashiki residence found them and used to check up on them and give them some food. One day though, a demon attacked them and his brother, Yuichiro, managed to protect him and Muichiro saw his brother die in front of his eyes. The difference between him and Shinobu is he was in rough condition with only one brother. Then the lady actually found muichiro injured right there, but rescued him.
4. Tengen Uzui
Tengen grew up in a family of 8 brothers. His father though hosted a competition where the siblings had to kill each other as some competition. They were in disguise though, so they didn't know they were killing each other. Tengen ended up winning and finding out because he unmasked the dude he just killed and saw he was his brother. So tengen killed his father right on the spot. He then found his 3 wives and pushed through.
3. Giyu Tomioka
Giyu saw his sister die in front of him at her wedding day. He then got rescued by Urukodaki with his friend sabito. At final selection, sabito saved everyone but died to the hands demon, which tanjiro killed later on. Giyu was broken and had the guilt on him his entire life.
2. Sanemi Shinazugawa
Sanemi grew up in a poor family of 5 siblings and his mother only. One day, his mother somehow became a demon and killed everyone, but sanemi saved genya in time by killing the mom. So he saw half of his family die, including he killed his mom and got blamed for it too.
1. Obanai Iguro
He grew up 65% of his life in a cage while being tortured with barely any food and he got his mouth cut to the ears. He managed to escape with a snake named kabarumaru, but the demon chased him and Shinjuro Rengoku (Rengokus dad) saved him and killed the demon. He swore to kill all demons and became friends with Rengoku due to his fathers acts.

In my opinion I think obanai's was the saddest because he spent the first 12 years of his life in a cage being tortured and used for his own beauty until eventually they got a bit cocky and slit his mouth. Apparently he is still traumatised from this experience and has become a lot more cautious ever since the experience.

@@TXC12480yeah u could say that, the only real reason as why I had Sanemi and Muichiro as my top, was not just the hardship they went through, they actually had something that pushed them to be better, to be stronger, for Tokito it was losing his brother, his mother, and his father, after losing what he held dear he lost all emotion, and his character development was amazing, from being a emotionless teen, to becoming more fluent with emotions, same with Kanao, on the other hand Sanemi was forced to kill his own mother, and for that he lost all his siblings and even lost genyas trust at that time, so that’s why he became such a hot head, and was so ill mannered, and with his character development he was able to express his emotions a lot better by the end, and even made up with his brother in genyas dying moments. That’s why I think they have sadder backstories, since it played out through their life, while Obanai was just a slave to women, and bro became scared of women, his backstory is still tragic, but Sanemi and Tokito was up there for me, I would say Himejima has the toughest backstory, let’s just say they all had tragic and tough backstories 😭

The fact that she also injected poison in her body to take revenge of her sisters death, is pure dedication. So basically she feels dead inside, just like giyuu.

Muichiro:
His mom died of a cold which developed into bronchitis and their dad died when he was trying to find medicine in a storm falling off a cliff so Muichiro and His brother, Yuichiro didn't have parents and one night a demon attacked and Yuichiro tried to protect Muichiro but the demon cut Yuichiro's left arm off and Muichiro in a fit of rage used every tool he could find to kill the demon and after he watched Yuichiro die and later Muichiro loses his memories and goes to join the demon slayer corps
Tengen :
He has 8 other siblings and tree of them died before reaching 10 years old due to harsh training and with the remaining. 6 of his siblings, their father forced them to kill each other without even knowing who they are killing cause their faces were covered with masks
Gyomei :
He became blind due to a Bad fever he had as a child and his mom died giving birth to him and his dad died to an epidemic, He lost his other family members due to unknown circumstances. Gyomei grew up with nine children who were orphans and raised them like his family in a temple, but in where they lived the threat of demons was very well known so he always burned wisteria incense at night but one night one of the orphans put out all the wisteria incense and invited a Demon into the temple.he tried protecting them but all of them tried running away and Gyomei thought that the children thought Gyomei couldn't protect them but they were actually trying to distract the demon to let Gyomei live but only the youngest little girl his behind the demon and he beat the demon till the sunrise and after the little girl thought Gyomei was responsible for everyone being killed and told some other people and Gyomei went to jail for a while and after became a hashira
Sanemi :
Sanemi was the eldest son of seven children and lived with both of his parents. Their father was abusive, constantly lashing out at the children and their mother until one day, he was stabbed and killed by someone with a grudge against him. Then their mom got turned into a demon and killed 5 of the siblings except Sanemi and Genya before his mom could kill Genya Sanemi tackled her with a knife in his hand and he killed his mom but Genya was young at the time and didn't understand and blamed Sanemi for everything so they grew up not talking to each other
