Even if it’s a fan-zone, Luminoucity is probably my one of my favorite Sonic zones. I just liked the idea of 2D Sonic running around a city, jumping on top of houses and things like that. Here's a little plot synopsis if anyone's interested: Illusion Island, a mysterious island that is set to appear once every decade in Sonic's world. Many eons ago, it was rumored to have a meteorite of extreme power crash into the island, bringing the force of a mysterious essence. Outside of that, its origins are a mystery, and no one is certain of its existence. Most of the island's mysteries lie down to its nature; from the different kinds of fauna never seen anywhere else, to even its surrounding water holding a different reflection of what is actually present. Due to its mysteriously rare appearance, the island went largely undocumented, and it would remain that way for a while. It would have stayed this way, until a certain Egg-shaped menace would choose to unravel the mysteries, and disturb the peace! After the destruction of the Death Egg in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, as well as the Atomic Destroyer in Sonic Triple Trouble, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles celebrated their victory! Seeing as there would not be much for them to do, they all went their ways for an extended break, to relax. However, Dr Eggman's schemes were far from finished. In the desperate searches of looking for a way to restore his practically destroyed army, his energy scanner picked up a mysterious power signature never seen before, coming from a location quite far from his base. A location of mystery; where the legendary Illusion Island was said to appear once every decade. Searching through his archives and books, while lacking information, Eggman had discovered that a meteor was said to have crashed there many eons ago. Also hearing that the meteor had contained tons of energy with mysterious force, the potential of utilizing such a tool would be great. Eggman eventually took off to check it out for himself. Looking unto the meteor and its power, it was far beyond anything he had encountered before... and just what he needed to rebuild his army. Allowing him to build things twice as fast as he could ever with normal tools, just as efficiently and strong, Eggman had realized he found himself the greatest treasure yet! By this time, Sonic was becoming increasingly suspicious of Eggman's apparent disappearance. It wasn't until rumors of Illusion Island's reappearance and strange activity reached him that he knew that eggy-fellow was up to no good! Sonic and his crew immediately left their break to see what Eggman was truly up to. They wouldn't know it until arrival, but they would have help to this task by a character who had spent his life on the island, and felt something wasn't right with Eggman's influence taking over slowly. Only the seven Galactic Gems scattered mysteriously across the island are capable of nullifying the Doctor's strong and seemingly unlimited power source. Sonic and co. must collect them to take a stand to Eggman's plans. Without them, Eggman's army of badniks will once again expand and threaten the entire world.
In 1996 people expected Sonic to go 3D. A 2d game would be a massive disappointment and would suggest that Sega is unable to compete with nintendo or sony, both of which had 3d platformers for their systems.
@@snakey888 It's true that everyone was hyped about "3-D", but I would've been totally ok with a game like Galactic as Sonic 4, with 2D levels and 3D special stages. There were a lot of great 2D games for the Saturn, and other 32 bit consoles at the time. But you're right, 3D was the aim at the time, unfortunately for Sonic...

I also don't understand why Sega just can't continue retro stuff, they could do same and we couldn't wait for full games to be finished in years, but they trying into 3d and push limits they barely can reach... Like they tried with Superstars... Idea was good but use of it is so bad, especially bosses, and final boss is annoying mess
Man, fan games like these make me wish that Sega would do something like Sonic Galactic, Overture, or Fallen Star and just…do something big with classic sonic.
This is crazy impressive! So many great sequences and cool new mechanics. I love the wall spin that lets you recover from missed jumps, and the whole stadium sequence was really well done - beautifully animated, well designed boss battle, and the crowd cameos were cute. There's a few little bits that could use polish but that doesn't take away from how well done the vast majority of this is! Feels very authentic and would have made a fun Saturn entry.
This is awesome. I thought it was official... I'd pay for this. The 3D special stage music where you got the first galactic gem couldn't have been more perfect. Great overall musical selections for the levels too.
That City level is phenomenal. The music, the sprite work, the background and level design, Turbo, and the stadium with the Sega and other characters with the added guitar riff after completing the level! It just oozes in charm. My only gripe is the mid boss taking extremely long to expose its weakpoint.
I like that those fan games do not just fall in the same trap as Sonic Mania, remixing levels and gimmicks we love, but creating new ones that keep the same level of fun! Was particularly surprised at Coral Garden, it's so beautiful and full of creative ideas!
Just played the first 2 zones. Gotta say: Coral Garden Act 1 is hands down the best water level I've ever played in a Sonic game. So much fun I almost ran the timer out.
Plus it feels like a lot of the weirdos from the late 2000s/2010s grew up and the weirdos today just got into other ips like hazbin hotel or into poptimism
This is extremely well done, especially for us older people who grew up with the original games. The music, sounds, level designs are all nostalgic but fresh
Weird thing to get hung up on with so much great stuff going on, but I loved the "column transitions" I saw in some parts where you'd see a route in the background, and Sonic ran behind a column that blocked the screen, and then would be leaving through that exit. Very creative use of the landscape and background elements to give the world a but if dynamics besides "Run right"
This needs to be like, a WAY Longer Game!! This is incredible!! We gotta talk about that level transition at 19:58 because that level is lookin absolutely peak. Keep it up man!
Nights from "Nights into Dreams" and the exclusive bosses from "Mega Man: The Wily Wars" (Buster Rod G, Mega Eater S and Hyper Storm H) are also there. Really neat!
Oh I know ristar when I first saw him I thought he was supposed to be a mascot for a tv show but instead he was just one of SEGA’s characters. But one question: that star in ristars is that supposed to be his mask or a part of him?
This is truly a marvel! ABG you've done it again. Can't say I'm a huge Sonic fan but this a labor of love and inspiration. The music was almost orgasmic😏👌❤Big UPS to the creative team behind this one👍👍🍻
It's a damn shame that games like these have to be developed by fans and not by SEGA themselves. They are gorgeous to look at and innovate on old mechanics.
This looks amazing. Easily professional quality. Very very interesting bosses as well (although guitar guy was too tanky imo). Fans showing once again they understand Sonic better than Sega nowadays.
Well this checks off all the boxes of a great Sonic 2D game and then some. Great sense of speed, sound design, pacing, level transitions, and bright color pallete/sprite work (took a cue from Knuckles Chaotix for sure. This is like Sonic CD 2). Out of all of the fam works, this one gives me Sonic Mania vibes and hopefully gets a full version because this Dev gets Sonic. Love the subtle backgrpumd changes that occur when you progress in the stages too (from morning to day and how it becomes more beach like in Verdant Isle act 1)+a fast pace and fun water level too!
This is such an impressive project! How the team sticks it through to the end! They've got a real treasure on their hands! The bosses are especially far more interesting that much of what we see in the 2D Sonic games.
I'm in pure awe at how magnificent this looks! This definitely lives up to looking like a Sega Saturn 2D Sonic game. Fang is a welcome addition and Tunnel is a terrific OC. The final boss of this demo is my favorite of the boss battles due to the uniqueness of it all from the boss itself being a rockstar and the setting being at a stadium with cameos of Sonic, Sega, and even Mega Man characters. I wish the best of luck for Starteam on this as this fangame's potential is extraordinary.
Something about the Sega era 2D games man. I love the creative ways people design gimmicks and platforms to fit the stage themes. The great music. The parallax backgrounds. This is a really great fan game!
It's incredible how much Sonic fandom and fan game designers understand more about a great Sonic game than the creators or Sega themselves. Graphics, sprites, level design, creative new features, characters and, OMG, the music. Who is the composer? It's the best Sonic music that sounds like Sonic music than anything composed by Sega in the last 30 years.
30:20 Amongst the audience of officially approved and endorsed OC’s, you can eventually find Captain Havoc from High Seas Havoc on the SEGA Genesis/Mega-Drive (DATA EAST, 199X).
30:57 Oh, and Sparkster is there too amongst Arle Nadja from Puyo-Puyo, are there any others I’ve missed? Would Bubsy even be allowed into this establishment?
32:07 YES, WE HAVE RISTAR AND TEMPO IN THE AUDIENCE TOO!!!!! I PREVIOUSLY FORGOT TO MENTION THAT NiGHTS FROM NiGHTS INTO DREAMS IS THERE TOO!!!!! Now all we need for one extra optional bonus point is to have LITERALLY FUCKING ALEX KIDD HIMSELF, and if DYNAMITE HEADDY is there too, that ANOTHER OPTIONAL BONUS POINT!!!!! Wonder if this game has THE BALLS to put Gunstar Red and Gunstar Blue next to Epsilon Eagle and VectorMan alongside PulseMan there, that would be 5 ADDITIONAL OPTIONAL BONUS POINTS ADDED RIGHT FROM THE GET GO!!!
this was one of the best Fan game I`ve seen. You are the Sonic Team level!!!. The music was awesome! (Especially the special zone for the Chao Emerald. the animations are very similar to Saturn games. I level design, chain reactions are all Flawless!!
coral garden is perfectly well planned in level design. One thing that bothers me a lot about classic sonic games is that the game wants to force you to go slowly since the game is about a character whose power is super speed, but stages that encourage high speed without sacrificing the quality of the level design. Hydro City and Coral Garden are two examples of water stages that are excellent considering that water stages are generally hated in any game.
I love the sound touches with the bump instead of being your Sonic regular one it is the Headbutt SFX from Ristar, bruh, now this is rellay getting GALACTIC xD Plus, i think that the "Shake it!"grafitti on the Luminoucity Zone the a reference to DoubleShake, or it`s just my imagination heheh... Thx for the gameplay, pretty relaxing the OST =D
Very well done and amazing looking game! As expected from Sonic fan developers! I think my only complaint with it is that Coral Garden Zone act 1, is way way waaaaaaay too long for a Sonic game! I legit thought I missed the act 1 boss fight and you were already in act 2 halfway through it was taking so long, to the point you actually reached the stage time limit. I do appreciate that they kept the speed momentum going for an underwater stage but it needs be a lot shorter!
Haha, yeah that level was surprisingly huge! I Totally agree about the momentum too. Underwater levels are usually my least favorite in Sonic games becuse the movement is so slow, but they did a great job of finding ways to keep the momentum up!
The wide open 3D sections look amazing. That size and openess gives sonic a level of freedom that even the Dreamcast Sonic Adventure games did not have. Great desgin. If this is runnning on Saturn hardware, this is absolutely brilliant
How is it that Sega keeps geting out-Sega'd by their fans?? This is fucking gorgeous! They coulda charged money for this! If the Saturn had this game, Sega might still be competing.
Doubtful. People expected 3d, a 2d game would not be enough. Especially of a new Sonic game. It'd effectively confirm the notion that "saturn can't do 3d" in a time when 3d was all the rage.
I'm really used to Sonic games having more enemies and traps. It feels like they really wanted to give the player that sense of freedom to move fast, rather than constantly stop to avoid a spike or jump methodically over lava. I like it, although it does take away some of the tension.
My ideas for boss names -Grouchy Caterkiller -Egg Top/Egg Spinner MKII -Coral Crab/Tumbler Crab -E-Series Submarine -Egg Sea Turtle -Speed Star/Luminos -Ball of Rock

I just spotted Arle from the "Puyo Puyo" series there, at Sparkster side; you can see her when the screen moves to the right!
Oh I know ristar when I first saw him I thought he was supposed to be a mascot for a tv show but instead he was just one of SEGA’s characters. But one question: that star in ristars is that supposed to be his mask or a part of him?
@@JayJose-i1p It's not a mask. The little guy is litterally a star.
Definitely my new favorite Sonic fangame of all time, it's so good! i wish it gets finished very soon
This is truly a marvel! ABG you've done it again. Can't say I'm a huge Sonic fan but this a labor of love and inspiration. The music was almost orgasmic😏👌❤Big UPS to the creative team behind this one👍👍🍻
Even the Genesis Unit; Hyper Storm H, Buster Rod G, and Mega Water S are enjoying this
Imagine if Sega cared about Sonic the way Nintendo does Mario. If they did, there would probably be 10+ games like this dating back to the late 90s.
I have nothing but love and respect for the people who make fan games✨it’s just so beautiful✨
Dedicated Sonic fans come in two flavors, creepy and hyper talented
Looks fantastic! Rivals even Sega’s own output with Mania. I hope this is a fan project that reaches completion!
This would be a perfect sequel to Mania in an alternate timeline. Everything I’d want out of a 2d title.
It's a damn shame that games like these have to be developed by fans and not by SEGA themselves. They are gorgeous to look at and innovate on old mechanics.
All classic Sonic songs should always have that 90s vibe. This game encapsulates that perfectly!
Whoever put Sparkster, Ristar and NiGHTS in the crowd at the Luminoucity boss fight is a genius. How many other characters can you identify?
dear SEGA,
this is literally anyone is asking of you
just this
Superstars exists you know?
The only problem they fucked it up on level and boss design department. And the game looks dated
This looks amazing. Easily professional quality. Very very interesting bosses as well (although guitar guy was too tanky imo). Fans showing once again they understand Sonic better than Sega nowadays.
I truly love Sonic fan games like this, the gameplay and character design are amazing, is just great what the Sonic fandom can bring!
Love the Monkey Ball-esque bonus stages
I know this game is new but MAN this brings back so many memories 😭😭 kids these days will never understand the feeling
The music on the special stage gahdamn
I was obsessed with Sonic the Hedgehog as a child in the early 90s
It's great to see the blue blur still going strong 😊
This game is light years ahead of the Saturn version of Sonic 3D blast. A game like this could have helped save the Saturn!!
I already love it! Grew up on Sonic. Watched the cartoons especially Sat Am and the one where he voiced by Urkel.
Had to stop and rewind when i saw Sonic DropDash up a wall at 5:02
Yeah, the dropDash ability really comes in handy!
What an absolute fantastic piece of work. They put a lot of work into this. Looks official ❤
Now this is just purely a labor of love
What a superb game! I wish Sega had made something just like this for the Saturn.
Ok this goes directly to my "EPIC and Interesting Stuff" playlist
It's the best Sonic music that sounds like Sonic music than anything composed by Sega in the last 30 years.
wowwwww kudos and congrats to the team that made this! this is amazing 👏🏼👏🏼
This was nice. I like this very much. Can't wait to see more.
🤯 Dude this looks Amaaaazing!! And that music! Straight fire! 🔥🔥🔥
The sprite work is insane
This demo looks so good :D definitely need to test it out!
@24:18 - 24:22 is just too awesome! The rings flying out and catching them at the bottom of the run....... Super Mario Bros Wonder? WHAT?
The spritework and level design on this is sublime.
Some of the most delicious parallax scrolling I have ever seen on ANY game. Looks amazing.,
coral garden is perfectly well planned in level design.
Yeah, my heart sank a little when I first saw it was a water stage, but this has the best water stages I can remember ever playing!
This looks insanely good. Better than anything I’ve seen from Sega in eons 😮
30:00 I like how you can see other SEGA characters and even some non-SEGA characters in the back. Ristar, Hyper Storm H, Egg Robos etc.
This is really what I and probably everyone else wanted from a Sonic game on the Saturn back in the day, but never got. Amazing looking game!
This is a pretty cool fan game I'm not going to lie
Our boi in blue looks better than ever 💙
Absolutely gorgeous fangame!
1:08 (speed X0.25) Woody Woodpecker? 🧐😯
I love how Ristar ( the character that could've been sonic) IS in the background, cheering.
This looks straight out of a dream for Sega fans. This is just brilliant.
luminoucity act 1 boss is cool. verdant isle act 2 parallax reflection on water is awkward.
I love the sound touches with the bump instead of being your Sonic regular one it is the Headbutt SFX from Ristar, bruh, now this is rellay getting GALACTIC xD
Plus, i think that the "Shake it!"grafitti on the Luminoucity Zone the a reference to DoubleShake, or it`s just my imagination heheh...
Thx for the gameplay, pretty relaxing the OST =D
Feels fresh to see a sonic fan game that doesn't happen to be a sonic.exe
Ristar cameo at 31:10, along with some other classic Sega characters! Nice touch, love it!
Short but great 👍🏻👏🏻
I loved the robot boss with his guitar.
This looks and sounds amazing.❤ Best Sonic I've seen since Sonic Mania.
Holy shit, i´m in literal tears!
FENOMENAL WORK!!
Looks like luminoucity is the new studiopolis
I hope Sega is seeing this and funds it as an official title , easily the best 2D sonic I've ever seen
Instant download! Looking forward to more of this!
This is easily the best looking Sonic fangame I've seen. It looks Mania quality.
@@AlphaBetaGamer Thank goodness for that!
The stages were very well designed, and Coral Garden was no exception!
It was just too long. XD
The wide open 3D sections look amazing. That size and openess gives sonic a level of freedom that even the Dreamcast Sonic Adventure games did not have. Great desgin. If this is runnning on Saturn hardware, this is absolutely brilliant
I really like this. Classic Sonic is and always will be the only Sonic that matters. Sega should have given us Mania 2 :/
This looks really well done for a fan game, even the special stage looks amazing, reminds me of both Chaotix and Mania
My ideas for boss names
-Grouchy Caterkiller
-Egg Top/Egg Spinner MKII
-Coral Crab/Tumbler Crab
-E-Series Submarine
-Egg Sea Turtle
-Speed Star/Luminos
-Ball of Rock
