Big Time Wrestling (also known as NWA Detroit) was a professional wrestling promotion headquartered in Detroit, Michigan.
In the aftermath of World War II, Harry Light established the Harry Light Wrestling Office as a vehicle for promoting professional wrestling in Detroit.
In 1948, Light founded the National Wrestling Alliance along with Al Haft, Paul George, Orville Brown, Sam Muchnick, and Tony Stretcher.
The six promoters agreed to divide the United States into regional territories within which they would not compete with one another and to recognise a single World Heavyweight Champion who would travel the country wrestling in each territory.
By the 1950s, Light - along with his business partners Jack Britton and Bert Ruby - controlled professional wrestling in Detroit and Big Time Wrestling on Channel 7 was one of the most popular programs airing in Detroit.
Light retired in 1958 and passed away in 1971, with control of the territory passing to Jim Barnett and Johnny Doyle. Barnett and Doyle formed a holding company, the Barnett-Doyle Corporation, and secured investment from backers such as Frank Tunney.
Barnett and Doyle were originally "outlaw" promoters but the territory later rejoined the National Wrestling Alliance.
In 1964, Barnett and Doyle sold professional wrestler Ed "The Sheik" Farhat and his father-in-law Francis Fleser the promotion (along with the rights to promote wrestling in the Cobo Arena) , for $50,000, forming "World Wide Sports" as a holding company.
Farhat booked himself as the promotion's top wrestler, winning the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship (Detroit version) 12 times.
By the 1960s, the promotion was airing two to three television programs per week and staging weekly house shows at the Cobo Arena.
In the early-1970s, the promotion faced competiton from Dick the Bruiser and Wilbur Snyder's newly established All Star Championship Wrestling promotion, which utilized talent from the Indiana-based World Wrestling Association.
After several wrestlers defected to A.S.C.W., Big Time Wrestling responded by bringing in talent from other NWA territories. A.S.C.W. stopped promoting in 1974 and Dick the Bruiser joined Big Time Wrestling, facing The Sheik in a series of brawls.
During the 1970s, Big Time Wrestling helped popularize hardcore wrestling.
Notable performers included, Fritz Von Erich, Mighty Igor, Dusty Rhodes, Ernie Roth, The Sheik, Ray St. Clair, George Steele, The Stomper, Johnny Valentine, • Killer Kowalski, Ernie Ladd, Lord Athol Layton, Mark Lewin, Tony Marino and The Blimp
The promotion's fortunes began to decline in the mid-1970s due to a combination of the 1973-75 recession, "no-shows" by wrestlers, and audiences becoming tired of the same old booking.
As audiences dwindled, events were relocated to the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum, and then again to the Lincoln Park Community Center just outside of Detroit.
The promotion was wound-up in 1980.

10-12 thousand at Cobo Arena month after month from the mid 60’s to the mid 70’s.
How do you post a Detroit retrospective and not mention Bobo Brazil as a main foe of the Sheik?
That's exactly what I was thinking. This was the wrestling promotion I grew up with in Ohio, and Bobo vs. The Sheik were the two biggest stars of the promotion, and had the longest running feud.
Was literally about to post this, and got so happy it was comment number one.
Easy, just don't mention him .
True. They didn’t.
I'm with you, I grew up in Detroit, born in '56 I was a huge fan as a kid and Sheik v. Bobo was the biggest feud for years. Wtf.
Absolutely love that you put this stuff together. Thanks for the hard work. Born & raised in Detroit. Grew up going to Cobo Hall
In the 60's 70's 80's.
Pompero Firpo, Bulldog Don Kent, Bobo, Johnny Valentine & greatest performer in pro wrestling history....
The Original Sheik. In my opinion.
Didn't mention Bull Curry!!!
A lot of this mini-doc is seriously flawed. Get your facts straight!
Thanks for dissing Bobo Brazil.
What the hell is with that music? Awful.
what about bobo
a lot of us looked up to bobo we kept with our grades as kids so we could go to help fill seats
It bears repeating, "WHY THE FUCK IS BOBO BRAZIL NOT MENTIONED IN THIS PIECE??? How can you talk about Detroit area professional wrestling in the 70's without mentioning Bobo Brazil?
Loved this show when I was growing up. A few notable names left out of this documentary: Pampero Firpo, Killer Brooks, Bulldog Don Kent ( he was also a member of the Fabulous Kangaroos) and tag teams Stomper (Guy Mitchell) and Ben Justice and also the Texas Outlaws (Dick Murdoch and Dusty Rhodes). Also ring announcer/commentator Bob Finnegan. Lots of great memories!
And money man hank james!
Also left out Haystacks Calhoun, Bull Curry, Luis Martinez, Tex Mckenzie
Big Texas bucks with Tex McKenzie on it and no mention of Ben Justice turning on Stomper breaking his leg and Firpo and the dots on his fingers for the claw
Bull and Flying Fred Curry
And Terry Sullivan on the play by play. Killer Brooks was around a long time too.
Thanks again for the upload it was great learning about the Detroit roots of Pro Wrestling
Who owns the Detroit library? Does any unreleased footage of this territory even exist?
Yes. Someone posted a ton of footage on here. Many an episode and in great quality.
I like that you do these docs, but you occasionally leave out a lot of important stuff. With this one you left out The Sheik's main opponent throughout the time he owned the promotion: Bobo Brazil. That was the one feud that kept the company afloat all those years. Also no mention of Pampero Firpo, Brute Bernard or Killer Tim Brooks.
My grandfather was a Detroit police officer and my dad said there was a huge riot at Big Time wrestling and he beat up a couple rustlers I don't know which one
bad "documentary" no Bobo, no Killer Brooks, the map is completely out of whack with the time line...sheik comes across as an afterthought??? whipper whatson ??? terry funk ???? the WWA vs Detroit war started earlier than indicated... just a whole lot of problems with this piece.
Hey he did what he could Okay!!!!
@@elijahwilson1659 no he some crap together and hoped it would stick. no research, no attempt at knowledge or understanding of the territory, the city, or the times.
NWA Detroit was no joke
Abdullah wrestled a lot in Detroit. He'd wrestle here for a pretty good stretch, then do a bit of a world tour, then came back for another stretch, and so on. I think Farhat would always make sure there was a place for him.
But where's Bobo Brazil?
excellent stuff!
No need to waste time rattling off various wrestlers.
What about the Other UWF with Herb Abrams as the 1st Heel Promoter.
Wait a minute, didn't The Mighty Igor constantly eat Slim Jims? I remember him.
Jerky . . .
Kielbasa. The Polish angle went over real big in Detroit.
Do a NWA San Francisco
Its on the list..
You forgot the Love Brothers
Do Kansas City

Ha ha best part",ur on your own kid... Yeah well I never liked you anyway"
If you want to see a George Gulas level of horseshit, check out Captain Ed George. Same deal, different territory.
Good video
I grew up on the Sheik's Big Time Wrestling in Detroit!!!!! in 2002 i got to meet Sabu and ask him how was his Uncle. he said he was doing good. i went to some matches in the 70s. good old days.
You should do a retrospective of the Detroit US title itself. So many great matches for that title.
My grandparents used to take me to matches in Detroit when I was a baby
Nice
John Tolos!!!!
Not much thought was put into designing those tag team belts.
Jamal Washington Not much indeed.
Nice of them to use my belt pics without permission. This video has a lot to be desired.
Big huge belts with fancy filigree work cost money. In those days, you sold tickets and hoped to Hell you made enough to pay everyone and keep some for yourself.
Also, notice belts from the 40's and 50's. They look like belt buckles. Same reason.
I remember seeing this promotion on TV when I lived in Port Huron.
What about one on G.W.F. (Global Wrestling Federation)
Its on the list.
Everyone smoked cigars back then lol
The Sheik lived in Williamston. I went to school with his sons.
"wrestler to be married 18th time" lol
Tony Marino aka BATMAN
One night Tony wrestled in Toledo,Ohio wearing his Batman wrestling boots. Kayfabe out the door.
Detroit baby !
Thank you
The photo you used for Al Haft was the original Dutch Mantel, and not Al Haft.
Harry Light promoted until 1964.
Motor City Casino, I'm at the cage with my old license
They tell me 'don't worry, I got your money' like Osirus
what happened to chuck allen big time wrestling?
I have never heard Big Time Wrestling ever referred to as NWA Detroit.
Thats because the name of the Television show was "Big Time Wrestling". The outfit was NWA Detroit. "Big Time Wrestling" on WKBD50
@@mikeborsum8881
They never EVER called the promotion NWA Detroit. That's like the idiots and morons that call Eddie Graham's promotion NWA Florida or Florida Championship Wrestling. Neither name was correct. The promotion's name was Championship Wrestling from Florida.
Extraordinary work on this guide through the territories. You are a top notch wrestling history essayist.
Thanks, I appreciate that.
You forgot about bobo
@@OriginalWrestlingDocumentaries Bobo, firpo, bull curry , stomper & ben justice
The level one after affects with the wrestlers’ photos has got to stop.
It’s holding you back, and you’re better than it.
Offer your services then.
The grand wiz what a great manager
We called him the Weasle in Detroit
Abdullah farouk
I loved him and Eddie Creatchman screaming at each other. I'M NERVOUS!! I'M NERVOUS - I'M CRAZY NOW!!! What was really funny is despite their Jew vs. Arab schtick, both men were actually Jewish.
