  • It’s time. I’ve been thinking about doing this for a good while now. The question I had every time I looked at my old journals & unsent letters was, “do I want anyone to ever read this stuff?” The answer is No! So it’s time to Declutter & Remove this physical/psychic baggage that I have hauled around for 30 years & set myself free.

I'm in my 50s now, and I looked at some of these old love letters from old high school flames. I cringed when I read most of them; was about to throw them in the camp fire, but I stopped myself because, even though they were cringeworthy, it showed the growth I've made since my tumultuous teens and twenties, and even thirties! I have so much trouble getting rid of these old letters/old painful journals. I think I feel like I might want to read them again to...again, see the nice transformation I made in my life... I feel like maybe the older I get that my memory won't work as good, and I'd like another reminder of how I've done well. What to do? My goodness! Then I tell myself, "I'd hate for my nieces to read this after my death. So if I keep this stuff, when do I throw it out? ...when I have terminal diagnosis? Such strange pull of back and forth with these sentimental letters and journals? Suggestions are so welcome 🙂 I need it!

You could digitize them into private cloud storage.

I’m reading through all my old diaries now, I’d be mortified if my children read them. I’m liking the process of reading through one, reminiscing then burning it. Very cleansing

It's a very cleansing feeling. You instantly feel lighter and you won't miss any of it.

I really needed to hear this, thank you! I've kept journals throughout my youth (I'm 55, stopped journaling maybe 15 years ago, still keep a daily journal of how I spent my day) and have wondered what will become of them when I pass. If I shred them, I won't have to worry anymore, and besides, like you said, I am not that person anymore and would hate for someone to read them and think I still felt/ thought those things. Thank you for this very important perspective!

Thank you for your comment J! I have found the releasing of these things, back into the wild as it were, is a very cathartic experience! Cheers!

I did this 2 years ago when I moved into the house I was starting a family in. I used to journal a lot especially the years I drank heavily and you’re right I didn’t really log my fun days and happy thoughts lol. Definitely not that person anymore. Even got rid of some photos. They were clutter I didn’t need in a new place but also vibes from another time that I just didn’t want to bring with me anymore. It was scary at first I thought I might regret it but it was actually incredibly therapeutic.

HI Lacey! Yes, it has been incredibly therapeutic for me as well. Sounds like we are both letting go and moving forward toward the future and that is a very healthy thing (especially after what we have both been through these past few years; the sad losses and the amazing new gifts - and that's life)! I will be doing a follow up video about this topic soon, as I've been shedding old skin as it were and it feels good. Thank you for your wonderful comment, for at the end of the day, I make these videos to inspire, entertain and hopefully share some of our collective humanity and my nerdy love for all sorts of fun things on our wonderful planet, whether it's travel, movies or my love for watches! Subscribe, if you haven't already, and please feel free to share the vids you like as I am working on building up this channel to reach as many as I can! Cheers!

PS I started a conscientiously kept journal during the Pandemic. Not just just writing when the spirit moved me. Even created a template that I various fill different portions of each day which completely alleviates the trenchant fear of the blank page. I’m firmly aware now what a great boon it is to keep the days, to keep them from groundhogging, to keep the mice from nibbling at your temples, to keep some sort of continuum in a mind where action! is still the prevalent modality but memory is becoming less and less of a usable function. I wish I’d have kept better track of our time stomping the terra together in our 20s.

I still keep a daily journal. Religiously. It's good for the soul. Though it too will one day go to the furnace (it's digital so it will just automatically delete after I'm no longer shuffling across this mortal coil).

I put in the search tool "what do I do with all my journals before I die" and this popped up. My shredder died shortly after I "medically retired" so into the firepit went 8 years of journals. I was soooo tired of them taking up space in my Campervan 😂
I'll retrieve the rest of them when I go to my storage unit next time. I do not want to leave a mess for my son to clean up when I'm gone. I know he'll keep my cat and my money 😂😂😂
ETA: Any advice on what to do with highschool yearbooks?

Thank you for sharing this video. I'm 47, but I feel an intense need to do my Swedish Death Cleaning now. I don't know why I have kept any of this stuff. I read it and I feel some nostalgia and some cringe. Why go backward? And also, /nostalgia/ can be interpreted to mean "our pain".
