You can keep whatever you want as long as it adds value too your life and you're being honest with yourself

I have over 20 years of my life written down in 47 journals piled up in boxes, and I've recently started to edit through them. Many of them are filled with bad memories that I needed to work through at the time by writing them out, but they are not memories I want to keep or revisit. So I've been editing through my journals, and typing out the good memories and fun times into a Word doc, which I will then print in a nicely bound volume for myself.
Whenever I come across a particular page that has doodles or something special besides basic text that I want to remember, I scan the page, and I will include it in the bound volume as a photo addition. It's a big project that I am still working on, but I think it will bring me joy to have all those memories preserved, and not have 47 notebooks lying around in storage.

This is great! I've just started to do this. Thanks for the idea

I actually do go back and read journal entries, mainly on my digital one, but I find it helpful in seeing situations that, back then, I thought was impossible...I'll NEVER get over this. Now with the perspective of years I read the same entry and think - "I got over that. I can face what's happening now." It's a source of encouragement.

Not everything has to be electronic. A few journals does not a materialist make. A hand written mole skin journal can be a wonderful thing. I've never heard of a journal weighing down someones life. Getting rid of a thing just because it's a thing doesn't make sense.

I would never have even thought of getting rid of my journals. They are too valuable to me. I fill them pretty slowly though, I only have three right now.

My journal is well over 50 volumes by now, maybe closer to 100. I tried writing on the computer, mostly to save time when there was a lot to write. But it didn't work, and it's not because I wasn't used to it. It was because you can write too fast on the keyboard. You can write EVERYTHING that goes through your mind, and I found I was babbling. It's better to write with a pen because it takes time, and during that time you (I!) compress and consolidate and refine your thoughts so that in effect, in the long run, you/I can do 6 months' worth of thinking in a few hours. It's a great tool.
As for indexing: you/I can do that in the flyleaf of the journal. Number your pages, and then write down the signficant ideas you've wrestled with and the page numbers where it all happens. Then if you're writing an article or giving a talk you can quickly find the work you've already done on the subject and the material you present will all be original. You'll be able to say something worth hearing. Again, a great tool.

I feel like something as personal as a journal should be kept. Now I know I’m a hoarder...but your journal is so personal. The energy of you emotions got transferred from your mind to your pencil. The perfect way your hand writes the letters that identify your handwriting. The stories that were told during that part of your life. Get rid of the crappy stuff, not the sentimental items that expressed your soul.

Agreed. A computer file is just like every other computer file but a hand written journal is like nothing else in the world. To me minimalism is getting rid of clutter and big boxes of crap made in China that is just going to a land fill anyway. Being some sort of legalistic minimalist seems stupid to me.

I love the minimalists and their podcasts so I don't want to be a troll. I just wish that sometimes Josh would talk less and Ryan would be able to talk more. I miss hearing from Ryan and what his thoughts are. I like that he was able to talk more on this podcast.

Haha that's been their dynamic for a long time and don't think it will change. Love them both though, I'd rather have that than no Minimalists at all, but I agree 😁☺️

I find it better for me to write in a journal rather than type a journal. The thoughts and creativity flow much better from my hand and pen.

I'm a homie and I keep mine. It helps me recover from mental health issues as I see what I survived

I have a dream journal. One reason I have it over a word doc is due to the importance of jotting down the dream as quickly as possible before it's forgotten. As for making dream journals work in the life of a minimalist, buy a nice box, and measure a nice moleskin to it. Honestly, it'll take a long time to fill it up. Especially if you have guidelines in terms of how you write out your dreams, you can prolong having to buy another box. I simply jot down my dreams within a page (and its backside). Nothing more than this.

I will be keeping my journal and physically writing in them then when it’s finished I will scan them and keep them organized in folders 👍🏻

I am keeping all my journals, even if it's cringe-fest when my 14 years old daughter reads how much I loved Tommy when I was 14, or what I dreamt that day or whatever I wrote at that time in my life. She can read every single one of them when I get old and I know she will, lol.

    Change requires changing your behavior.
As a health coach, I find that people are resistant to change.

The biggest thing that I have learned from being a minimalist, is to stop being identified by things. Many times we are simply trying to impress others. Stuff stills your space, time and ultimately your life.
