    I purposely bought a spiral bound flexible notebook for my first bullet journal, wanting it to not have a feeling of permanence. For me, journaling is about the "journey" not the destination. Kudos to you for making the change.

    Yes, I only ripped out a few layouts that have info I will use in the future, but the rest of the journals trashed. I used most of my pens and markers. Some current favorites I kept, and the rest went to trick or treaters. Do not miss paper punches, washi tape, stickers, ephemera. The peace it brings is wonderful. My kid has plenty of photos, cards, etc. for memories.

    I want my children to have them when I pass away I know they will be really meaningful for them to keep . My older sister got my grandmothers journals and she cries every time she reads them over and over they’re so special to her . She preferred her journals over inheritance of money 💖💖💖

      I have my mother's and it's 5 years before I was born. My older brother and sister are there, but my dad and I are not even mentioned. I was really upset with why my brother gave it to me, and I really wanna toss it, but it has old pictures of loved ones, and her memories in it. I still have it.

    I did that too today and I feel so much lighter. I did keep two of them that I liked, as well as a few pages I tore, that contained information I will copy to my commonplace book. My journals were all really personal and not something I was intending to pass on to family members. I was actually terrified of anyone reading them. If I ever have any kids, I'll leave them the two I saved, a pregnancy/adoption journal, travel journal, or some short stories or recipes or something.

    Good for you bc I don't think I could ever do it UNLESS I scanned the pages, which would be time consuming but that's the only way I see myself getting rid of my journals.

    I got rid of my first journal I was keeping. I worked through a lot of emotions and past trauma in my life. I didn't want my daughter growing up and reading it and seeing what I went through. Plus every time I saw it on the shelf I had a bad feeling.
    I burned it. Felt better and still feel better. My other journals I have kept because they are more light.
    As for planners, I dont keep them. I might transfer some spreads if I'm still using it but as for the notebooks I plan in they leave once full.

      @Pensive Ink I have started what my husband has called a "bitch journal " it's where all the hard stuff goes. No one reads it and once I've worked through it I burn that thing. I still keep my memory keeping journal since it's pretty lighthearted and stuff I want to remember later.

    I have 2 adult kids and no grandkids yet. I told them to keep my journals if not for themselves then for my grandkids so they will get a sense of who I am later in life. When my mother passed last year it was so nostalgic to go through her memories and I want my kids to experience the same. As far as my planners go, they have really helped me with remembering certain things and dates that people ask me about whether for personal or business.

    I really appreciate this content. I’ve been debating about what to do with my old journals. I’ve decided to flip through them and extract the little “nuggets of wisdom “ that came from the process and put them in a smaller singular journal. It is freeing to let the bulk of them go.

  • @azounx
    @azounx 3 года назад +10

    Maybe “donating” them to some kind of historical archive would be a good idea. Just imagine how interesting they would be to people in a hundred or two hundred years' time. Obviously, they would have to remain inaccessible for a while. I'm sure archives have a policy like that.

    • @thedevinluu
      @thedevinluu  3 года назад +1

      Hi Tobias! Thank you for this wonderful suggestion! I don't know that I would've had the courage to do this with my journals as some entries were incredibly personal...but this seems like a lovely idea for more surface level things I keep in my planners. 😊

    For throwing away stationary, I chuck my planners and keep my journals. But I am a very slow writer and I don’t do BUJO, so I don’t have much to throw away. I am two years into my current journal, and I haven’t reached the halfway point yet! 🤣 By the time I finish one, the book has become a “companion” and I look back on it fondly. I’m happy to hear that your cleaning brought you so much joy, and I look forward to seeing your next video!

    It is a difficult decision to let go of many things, regardless of what they are. The pandemic has made me realize that I have accumulated many things over the years that I no longer use and need. It does feel good to let go of things because I realize that it is not about how many things that I have. Thank you for your presentation. Take care.

    I'm due for another sort and purge thru my journals. I do keep some/many but not all of them! Currently I still refer back to my 2016-2020 bullet journals and I have saved all my pocket calendars since 2003 LOL - those help me remember major milestones and they take up only a little space. Of the journals I have kept (very few compared to how many I wrote/filled) my favorite one is my 5-year one sentence journal from 2012-2016 ... there are so many memories in that one and it's so fun to look back on it's done in a way that you see what your thoughts were over 5 years on the same day if that makes sense. Each page has 5 separate entries for that same day + I find it fascinating to read those entries.
    If I tried to keep all my notebooks, calendars and journals it would be a mighty big hoard since I'm getting up there in age and I fill up so many notebooks lol.
    When I do get rid of them I completely destroy them thru shredding or burning. :)

    You know what's best for you, so good luck on your minimalism journey. I see it differently, why force myself and get rid of completed journals, just because this hot trend? Minimalism is ok, we should all buy less, but why should it result in getting rid of my memories and art that I've created? I would take minimalism as inspiration and not as some set of rules. The dream of empty shelfs is just a dream, you will always have things around you. Unless you go to some convent or are forced to leave your home like so many people are these days. In a normal, quiet life, things are around us, it's more logical to be conscious about them then to throw them away. Orderly shelves don't result in a quiet mind. I'm not talking about this to you, this are just some random reflections about minimalism. But 'm sorry you've had a panic attack.

    I usually get rid of my planners no problem but my journals...that's a diffent thing 😅. I have been giving the possibility of getting rid of them some thought for a couple of months now but I just can't go through with it at this moment. I have waaay too much emotional attachment to them and need some time before i can actually go through with discarding them. I even considered maybe scanning them and keeping a digital copy of them in case i ever want to look through them but still thinking if that's something i want to actually do.

    As a book lover i would hoard a lot of books, and buy a lot of books just because they were cheap and i might enjoy them at some point. Eventually i realized i had two stacked bookshelfs with more books then it was supposed to hold, and most of them were unread. I also got a Kindle at that time, although i was very aprehensive at first, but then it changed my perspective towards reading, and i realized that maybe i was giving more value to the physical object other than the written story that was the main thing. In the end, i reduced my book collection to one bookshelf, and im constantly taking books out as new ones comes, i finally decided that i want to have only the books that i find to be my favourites and ill probably reread in the future, or i would like to recomend and lend to other ppl to read aswell, and of course gifts/signed copies.
    Recently, as i started with bullet journal i opted to a disc bound notebook, as it feels that i have more freedom to use it for many purposes and to know that i would eventually start to hoard all of the journals. Now with stationery, i feel like i am in a better position to enjoy the suplies that i have and am gratefull for, but also i can share with my penpals and use it as a means to express my creativity. Even tho the constant features of new stationery in socialmedia i can decide which ones i need. ( same with fountain pens )
    Thanks for sharing your experience, Devin!

    I understand where you're coming from, although I don't think I can get rid of my own journals. 😅 Especially when I have so many personal effects in them such as photos and ephemera. I think my hesitation is also born from the fact that I didn't grow up in a stable home, so I was never able to hold on to things for very long due to circumstances out of my control. I appreciate the concept of minimalism, and I do try to incorporate aspects of it into my own life, but I think it comes from a place of abundance and everyone has different relationships with items.

      @@thedevinluu Hi Devin! I've actually been putting a lot of thought over your video! 😅 I feel like I might have come off as defensive and I apologize. I've been slowly decluttering my own life (secret goal of mine that I don't put to attention too much to online in case it goes sideways 😅), and letting go of things hasn't been as difficult as I thought.
      It's true that stationery brings me joy, but I think the memories I formed with them has greater meaning to me than actually keeping them. It also helps that the items I've been destashing are going to other people in the community who will love them too. I've taken a lot of comfort in that knowledge.
      Anyway, I do so appreciate you sharing your minimalism journey! ❤ I think I'm still very new to it, but I'm not giving up!
