    I live not too far from the khlong toei shacks/river houses, and when i go past the smell is pretty strong by the river, its a shame that some of those stilt-houses falling into that dirty water. It's so crazy, you'll see the shacks, then look up, and there's condos like Modiz, brand new luxury condo.

    Great episode showing more real and less "holiday" side of Thailand. When there is a shared goal or a struggle, communities form. It's a thing that I miss in western big cities, everyone lives on their own and communities are rare. It's so much harder to achieve something as a swarm of individuals where nobody cares.

    I was in Thailand during the Pandemic, arrived 3 days before lockdown. During the first year from March 2021 Thailand had 52 cases only. Numbers exploded into the thausands only AFTER they started the vaccination program. Today thousands suffer clogged arteries many die.
    While he complains about the large conglomerates like CP he directly played right into their hands.

    If you are young in Thailand, it is not difficult to escape poverty. The large chain businesses including 7-11, Family-Mart and all of the chains that fill Big-C and Central Plaza across Thailand do offer living wages (12000-14000 THB a month) if you are sharing a studio with a friend or boyfriend. These are mostly dead-end jobs that will pay you to look presentable and provide decent customer service. The problems begin when you hit your 30s and are no longer hired for these jobs as they focus on employing the young. As you have noted, English is helpful because you can then work in the tourist economy. A lot of young people will do this to send 3000-5000 THB back to their family in rural Thailand and will allow their family to live without deprivation on a total income of 9,000 to 10,000THB. In the rural communities, no one is starving as there is plenty of surplus rice and vegetables, even in the worst soil areas of Issan. But there is very little income for non-food or shelter.

    I believe one way Thailand looks out for it's people...foreign businesses have to hire a certain percentage of Thais. Meaning, their employees can't be mostly foreigners. I met a bar owner in Vietnam and he had to employ a certain percentage of locals. Now, that I think about it...all his employees were Vietnamese. He was the only foreigner.

    • @OneNightinBangkok_
      @OneNightinBangkok_  2 месяца назад +1

      yes, that's true. Typically, it's 4 Thais for every 1 foreigner

    People on retirement visas are forbidden to work, and that includes volunteer work. Be aware that you can be jailed/fined for doing so.

    I wonder why so many foreigners keep giving money to ladies instead of helping the local community and poor people, these are real poor people not ladies that just use their money for pleasure. Totally no sense but we know men think to other things. I see often on fb groups men asking how much money should give to thai wives and debate that. Are they doing anything for poor people? Dont think so

      When you consider they pay their wives ! That answers everything as to the mentality of the individuals you speak of
