Recreating Joker's Grenade Jacket from The Dark Knight

- For Halloween 2022 we put the scene where the Joker interrupts Gotham's underworld's "group therapy" session in 2008's The Dark Knight, and see what would have happened had the Joker pulled the string on all 5 of the grenades he had in his jacket.

Happy Halloween! We figured this movie recreation would be a solid idea for Halloween. We had other ideas in mind, but we were swamped with getting our lives back in order and getting the new house up and running.
Have any new ideas? Be sure to drop them in the comments section! We love to hear them. Also helps us crush the algorithm which has been rough with us lately.

It still boggles my mind that a flashbang, which is not designed to destroy, is a DD. But a thermite grenade, is not considered a DD because it burns but doesn't explode.
Nobody said the ATF makes sense
ATF moment
Ah see you assume the ATF actually understands what they regulate. They don't.
Bold of you to think the ATF can use more than 2 brain cells.
To be fair thermite grenades are underwhelming as hell.
Couple of us vets are literally sitting around yesterday talking about how hard real grenades are to pull... And that they never have the secondary brace clip on the top of m67's. Great show of how grenades actually work!
It used to be easier but too many guys got blown up when the pins got caught on foliage.
I've thrown a few M67s. Yes, the pin is quite resistant to pulling.
Even thrown from cover, you can get fragments raining down on you. Hot frags too.
Thank you for bringing us supreme content even after what happened!
We are trying as best as we can to get back to normalcy.
@@OrdnanceLab are you a publicly traded company that people can invest in? investment i'm sure could really help you guys rebuild
It’s beautiful to see jake find his voice he sounds so much more comfortable and confident on the mic these days! Great job guys #ripbuddy
The dialog in the movie establishes that the Joker has all custom made clothes, including the jacket (this is stated when Joker gets arrested). With that in mind, i always kind of assumed the Joker had reinforced his jacket lining with a strong enough fabric to hold on to the grenades, and it looks like the string going to the pins is a kevlar string rapped in decorative purple thread. Either kevlar or some other super high tensile string should be enough to pull the pin, and then the pouches sewn to the jacket lining (if you look closely you can see the pouches sewn in) could also be strong fabric.
If anything, i would wonder if Joker would accidentally yank the grenade out of the pouch. its not clear if the pouch is sewn with a circular top that is too narrow to let the grenade come out. assuming it is sewn that way, and assuming the pull string is strong enough, all that would remain is Joker having to fight the floppiness of his jacket. That jacket would want to spin around his body. He does sew them around the arm pit which is better, but it would look seriously funny to see someone ripping as hard as they can to get the pins out. The Joker is shown to be stronger than the average person though, and knowledgeable about explosives (the Joker seems to have some level of police or military training).
I know a really good costume seamstress and i'm tempted to try and get a prop replica made lol. i think the prop itself is just regular thread and fabric sewn into a normal custom jacket, but i think the fabrics you would need do exist.
Not to mention that with all that customization, he could've customized the pins too... in fact that seems like it would probably be likely. Regular/real grenades have pins that are hard to pull because we don't want AD's, but the Joker wanted to be able to pull the pins easily and probably wouldn't mind if his jacket AD'd while he wasn't in it.
“Oh and by the way, the suit wasn’t cheap. You oughta to know, you bought it!” - Joker
Yeah despite not being a guy with plan, he sure showed a lot of forethought and planning in everything he did in that movie. Of course the whole thing was mostly a bluff but there’s no way the joker wouldn’t actually make the jacked capable of exploding. No doubt some poor henchmen had to test
Out the prototype jacket first.
The effectiveness of that setup was extremely impressive.
I won't lie. It impressed me. The boom was awesome.
@@jlambuth I would have put money on the targets barely getting hit, but they got destroyed.
Really appreciate you guys making content even after the fire. Stay strong 💪
04:50 Back in the military, we pulled the pin, which consists of two "wires" and reattached the pin with only one wire in place, when we made IEDs. By that, forces down to nearly nothing could pull the pin.
Not sure if this was said but joker said the "This suit wasn't cheap; you oughta know-you bought it"? So he had to have that particular suit altered for the grenades.
That hospital scene in the dark knight was improvised. There wasn't meant to be a delay in the explosion but heath ledger went with it and it was put in the movie.
When ever I see grenade pins pulled easily in movies I just justify in my mind that the person prepped by pulling the pins once and putting them back in without bending the cotter pin.
“He served with great honor and diligence to duty”
That’s great
Joker never intended to die. The vest just needs to convince everyone to not try anything.
Well thats why this vid trys to test if it should have been convincing or not.
Grenades in a confined space is the worst-case scenario for anyone hoping to survive it. Between the shockwave & the shrapnel, it would have been unlikely anyone would have survived had the joker detonated his insurance policy.
Def gets his message across
I'm pretty sure the Joker knew he wouldn't have to pull the pins so he wasn't worried about it working. He got the reaction he wanted just by showing the grenades.
Oh I loved that still of the target being impacted by the blast overpressure, cool
5 grenades together is nothing to sneeze at!
Really the ideal way to string the grenades up would be absolutely to have them very secure to a sturdy jacket, however, if you string the grenades in such a way that tension is only applied to one pin at a time, the force required to pull the pin wouldn't be any greater than the force needed to pull one pin, this method would probably require a bit more rope so you would need to do a hand over hand style pull and there would be small fractions of a second delays between each pin being pulled, but definitely more than possible I think.
I know this is a year old comment, but it gave me the idea of the clowns pulling endless handkerchiefs, but it’s attached to the pins
@@islahinckley4746 lol yeah exactly, use several colors for extra points.
I could see a blacked leather vest added in to the jacket adding enough stability to get a couple of the pins to come out, then sympathetic detonations for the rest.
You guys are doing great! The Dark Knight is such a good movie and this was very satisfying
Hello friends and fellow energetic enthusiasts! We hope this video brings you tons of treats and zero tricks.
Yes, I read the trigger scale wrong. I was using the metric side, as always. The imperial scale I simply read off. Imperial units are silly to me.
It was a pain to get it up and going as YT kept going back and forth if they wanted to pay us for this one.
We also wanted to go into further depth on attaching grenades to a jacket, but that content got insanely long. Added like an additional 5 minutes and could teeeeeeechnically be viewed as construction instructions. So we had to chop it. Sorry. I stand by my statement though that yanking all the pins would have been problematic for the Joker. Still a good idea though.
I'm good with the way you handled it. Seems pretty clear that the Joker was counting on the mob bosses being ignorant of such things but equally clear that if push came to shove he would have torn one loose, pulled the pin and tossed it into the middle of the ring of tables as a distraction to cover his escape. He was and was not bluffing at the same time.
You forgot the Joker is crazy ,he doesn't care about safety, those pins were probably held in by spring tension alone.
@@j.robertsergertson4513 Yea. Good point
@@j.robertsergertson4513 ... he's not crazy...
Seriously, he's convinced he's right and is on a mission to prove it. He knows the gangsters are afraid for their lives same as he knows Batman won't run him over with the bat cycle thing. There was almost zero risk to him. Watch the movie again. He carefully avoids real risk while seeming to dance on the third rail full time.
i wonder how amplified the blast would have been in that confined space such as what we see in The Dark Knight.
pretty freaking lethal
Love your show brother! Thank You for your efforts to entertain and inform!!!! Thank You brother!!
1) joker could've changed pins to be smooth & lazier springs to make pulling easier
2) joker could've had no intention on blowing the grenades or they may have been dummies. As he's betting on people believing his bluff.
Also, blowing up 5 grenades indoors creates decent pressure effect compared to outdoors from combined ~300grams of TNT so that increases lethality
Def a solid way to get your point across
Honestly, he didn't even need to be able to pull the pins, as merely revealing the grenades would make everyone stop, and if they don't have intimate knowledge of hand grenades then they aren't going to know that he can't pull the pins with his setup
Plus, joker was in confined space. The shock wave would have caused more damage. The shock wave can kill more from trauma
You guys are epic! Awesome job I always thought this would be hard too, the joker 🃏 💥
The dummy not standing works for the "pull at table" scenario.
5:09 "Oh, and by the way, the suit, it wasn't cheap. You oughta know, you bought it." -The Joker
Brilliant Quick episode! Thanks guys.
That was awesome! You guys are crazy I really enjoy watching y'all's explosions. Wish I was still a powder monkey
Nicely done. I'd say the issue is the character himself, The Joker. People could make up any reason for the grenades to work flawlessly since Mr. J is bats*** insane.
True. He's a legit wildcard.
pre-loaded every pin in the jacket halfway out
for rescue Randy
F
Side note amazing video. The only thing I think would have made this test better would have been to have it in an enclosed space, seeing as how the joker was in an office and there would have been the chance for shrapnel to ricochet off of the walls and tables and whatnot. Otherwise this was fantastic and I would love to see more stuff like this
Awesome video as always 👌
Sympathetic explosions are badass
Couldn't agree more
@@OrdnanceLab for the nerd in me, could you do a video on how the grenades igniter works?
Not to mention overpressure in that enclosed room.
You neglected to mention blast overpressure in such a confined space. If anyone managed to survive the frag the overpressure would have killed them.
Awesome.
Amazing how much shrapnel these grenades throw out.
You guys are based as always. Much love from Austin Texas.
Thanks my man!
Great work Sir thank you
Great video and Happy Halloween!
I find it funny when they say "We're not sure how The Joker attached these grenades to his suit..." while they show the still where you can clearly see the grenades are secured with fabric straps that are safety pinned to the suit.
Awesome video, guys!!
Thanks for another great video!
I really do enjoy these videos.
Nice, Happy Halloween!
05:06 "Oh, and by the way, the suit. It wasn't cheap. You ought to know, you bought it!"
RUclips hid this one from my sub box. Just seeing this now.
I now know what I want to do when I get old and retire!!! Happy Halloweenie guys and be safe!
Happy Halloween!
Love the videos guys
Glad you enjoyed it
Sick video
Heath Ledger knocked it out of the park as the Joker. He would've had some killer roles after that movie. RIP.
The thing is joker suit was not cheap costume he says that when mocking the gang so fabric is very durable he just needs to spread his hands and pins are out..
Joker: Oh and by the way the suit it wasn't cheap, you ought to know you bought it.
Such a great line.
I'm complaining.....
About NOTHING!
Thanks for the video
Fantastic content as always.
I actually would love to see more grenade content. I’m fascinated by the amount of mills bombs and other unexploded ordinance still laying beneath the soil of all those farms in France. Any thoughts on touching on that type of content?
Things go boom I get happy I'm a simple man
Thank you for the video! 🤩👍❤
Could he file down the pin to make it easier to be pulled out? Knowing Joker's style I'd expect him to modify everything he got his hand on, making the straps sturdier and filing down the pins, making them tapered to make them easier to slip out.
Knowing the joker, that was NOT a cheap jacket
Maybe he use a strong string metal to strap the grenades like steel cables or something
Something he could use more force with
Awesome Video as always guys, especially after the fire. Quick question to jake: Where did you get the nope Shirt lol?
He got it in a donation shipment of clothes. Jake literally had no clothes post fire except what he was wearing. Someone donated that shirt to him.
Do a video about sympathetic detonations on grenades prove that it works
5:06 I’ve learned you can if you need to, bend the legs of the pin inward to allow for easier pull
He could have prepared the pins to be easier to remove, maybe even cutting the back half off. Yes it would be a little unsafe, but I mean, it's the Joker.
Leave this up YT, educational content/movie review right here.
Could you please make a video on the comparison of famous grenades?
a) Granatapfel (glass or clay sphere filled with black powder)
b) dynamite stick
c) Stiehlhandgranate (with and without fragmentation sleeve)
d) Granatbündel (6 heads of the Stiehlhandgranate wrapped around one Stielhandgranate, I think that's almost 1.5kg of explosives!)
e) Pineapple grenade
I would be in particular interested what the blast can do of each grenade. However, most of them rely on fragmentation. Still, something like d) is likely to turn anything in the surrounding into shrapnel anyway...
Sure. Can do.
When comes the wrong-side claymore vs Bulletproof glass from Nobody?
Nice vids keep it up
So what was the cause of his house fire? Feels bad losing everything. Hopefully he can bounce back.
We aren't totally sure. We believe it was the AC unit caught fire.
@@OrdnanceLab 🥺
Well I dont know this Joker full habilities. But If he has knowlegde of explosives (like in the comics he chemist after all) he could have easly tamper with the pins. And I dont think It makes a differece but he made a little pulley system with the hook at the top...
F. Thanks for your service randy, takes a brave dummy to volunteer for that kind of scientific testing!
you guys should do Armstrong's mixture
He shows ONE side of his jacket. The implication being that he's loaded on at least both sides.
Tests like these need pressure disks =P
Big F
Rest in power, king.
I would love to see y'all get a sponsorship from Ballistic Dummy Lab. For science of course.
He pre pulled and loosened the pins. We did this in Mosul Iraq in the Army. Not that difficult lol
Have you ever tested the combo potato masher that the Storm Troopers used in WW1? Its like 6 masher heads wrapped around a complete masher. Its pretty gnarly and itd be neat to see.
Too cool, and it DEFINITELY got a 👍 from ME!
Thanks!
The movie setup was impractical for an even more basic reason. Pulling that handle up would have mainly lifted the jacket up. A mechanism in which the handle is twisted, not lifted, might have been better for extracting pins, but without some kind of bracing, the jacket fabric would simply twist.
There is much hand-waving that could be done, not to mention alternatives (e.g., electrically triggered bombs), but of course this is a movie, and the point was to quickly convey the threat to an audience.
There is a DD i want you guys to make from a movie called The Domestics. The MC has a pop-can with a shotgun shell with a fuse through the primer and the can filled with debris. Throne like a grenade, it looks very accurate to how it would explode in real life
ruclips.net/video/d_0xCb362XU/видео.html
What kind of mystical explosive properties are you imagining the shotgun shell to have?
@@camojoe83 i would imagine the whole shell is filled with powder because i lacks a primer. Thats why i want to see it tested.
Awesome
9:54 _This_ _That_
Has anyone done the Robin Hood Prince of Thieves explosion where Kevin Costner shoots a barrel of gunpowder with a flaming arrow and it blows up?
When I was in Army (1976-1980), many old-timers swore by the practice of 'exercising' the pin.
Deliberately removing the pin, then re-inserting it, all while holding down the spoon.
"You don't have time to twist out a stiff pin during a fire-fight!"
I discounted this as 'barracks talk'...who would play with explosives like that? [stop laughing, guys]
Also a blast like that in a room would kill everyone with the shockwave and pressure alone...
My theory is that he did this for leverage and as to scare them
I listened to a podcast with John Stryker meyer and Jocko and John said the Vietnamese would have these pieces of cloth with 3 - 5 grenades tied on by the pins and they would throw it but hold on to the cloth so it pulled the pins. He was in SOG.
similar idea I guess.
Way more shrapnel than I expected.
It sent tons flying everywhere. Movies don't ever depict grenades correctly in how damaging they can be.
BOOm! Happy Halloween! 👻💥
Would the overpressure be lethal in the slides environment in the movie? Even with the shrapnel, I’d expect that for the people at the back of the room, that much explosive would at least be enough to knock you back if not incapacitate/kill
sick
6:00 4.5 kilio's or 10 POUNDS not ounces...
Cool.
Hey ordinance lab it's a metal plate. If you look really close in the movie on a decent TV you can see the grenades are attached to metal plates in the vest.
Although not a legit dummy grenade I had one of those complaint department take a number desktop ones years ago and the PIN really had to be yanked hard if you didn't put pressure on the spoon
Things go BOOM 👍 GREAT Video.
one thing you forgot The Joker is nucking futs so he bent the pins so they'd all come out . Safety isn't really a big concern.
