    I rarely comment on RUclips videos, but this bugged me - fire DO NOT start at 120k a year! My husband is a fireman and without any overtime he would make maybe 56,000 and this is in Los Angeles. They have to work a decent amount of overtime to make 6 figures which means they don't have the cushy schedule like you mentioned. Also, for those saying their retirement benefits are too much, why don't you rush into a burning building, or pull bodies out of a horrendous car wreck, or save lives. Seriously, it's a strenuous job, mentally and physically, not too many can or would want to do it. Also, FACT you do not have to be a paramedic. You have to be an EMT, which is different. Makes me question all the numbers on the other jobs mentioned!

    • @Cordova10-8
      @Cordova10-8 7 лет назад +53

      manofausagain nah. I’m a union trucker. Daycab, not long haul. I don’t work weekends unless I choose to and only work holidays if I want that sexy triple time. I do work long days, but my wife works nights and sleeps all day anyway, so it doesn’t matter. I start anywhere from 0300-0500 and work 10-14 hours a day. Average is 56 hour weeks.
      Make good money thanks to the overtime and I get free healthcare. Just takes some grunt work for a few years to get to this spot.

      Yeah I thought this video would actually go into datail about the "grunt" part way more. What training do I need? How long does it take to get licensure? How many years will I be a grunt until I actually make the good salary. This video answered very little. And why was the anesthesiologist even on here. I would think most of us watching already know about doctor and surgeon positions being highly paid. Very disappointed.

      There's nothing wrong with hard work. There is however something wrong with "work your way up for years being poor". Companies will naturally need more people in lower positions than higher up positions so your chances of working your to a 6 figure position in these types of jobs are small.

      Keep in mind a full-blown Anesthesiologist makes an average of $400,000 a year after residency.

      Ricardo you freaking imbecile. even getting into med school requires most people to sit on their ass and study for MCATs for a year. but let's say that you have an IQ of 200, and you just breezed through 8 years of university education along with 4 years of residency and the board exams, final exams, oral exams, mid-terms, practical exams, written exams, centralized exams, theses and articles, state exams, etc. In the mean time, paying over 100 000 USD for this education.
      now you are an Anesthesiologist, who has to watch over surgeries that take hours. you gotta interfere and resuscitate the patient if anything goes wrong, your eyes must be on the screen (that shows SpO2 and HR/BP) the entire time.
      My point is, it takes a lot more than 8 years, it takes 12 years at best, and the notion that afterwards you get an "easy life", shows WHAT A CLUELESS FUCKINGGGG MORON you are.

      Angelich White Not sure if your aware, but most city jobs in the first responder category such as fireman, are tremendously political in terms of landing the job of your choice. You are applying for a job where you are trying to enter into a very small group of bonded individuals who count on each other with their lives. It’s not like you can just go to the fire academy and just be a fireman. Job availability tends to scarce for this reason. There is a lot of discrimination in certain areas regarding race and etc. If you land a job as a fireman in the location you desire, you’ve just won the lottery. Lol

    A note on the Longshoreman job- my step father is a longshoreman. The only time he does any major physical work is if he is helping to load luggage for cruise ships. That's just due to his particular job, which is simply to move containers to where they need to be, with a machine of course.
    Longshoreman can experience really uneven work days, but they tend to steady out as you gain seniority within the company you work for. For example, before my step father gained 10 year seniority, he was once on the job for a total of 72 hours. At his specific pier, they allow 2 hour breaks every so often. Still, even with seniority, expect long work days.
    The job can be dangerous if you're not careful, chances are you'll be manning industrial vehicles that are very big and very expensive, not to mention whatever is in the containers themselves.
    With certain cargo ships, you may have to load some pretty expensive cars to be shipped to other places. My stepfather claims he had driven a BMW i8,and a very small handful or Porsches.
    Funny enough, you can get a kind of decent enough visual on how the job works in the GTA 5 mission where you have to impersonate a longshoreman.

    Here's a good one, Expediter. You can drive your personal vehicle, making LTL (less than truckload) deliveries for a freight broker. I myself worked all year long at McDonalds, saving up money to buy a cargo van that can haul up to 2500lbs. BUT I didn't know until after that I could have used the minivan I used to drive before I got my work van.
    Some of the loads I took did in fact go up to 2500lbs but then I would get a few runs that were only a couple of small boxes. I make about $1900 to $2100 every two weeks. I'll never have to work at McDonalds ever again. But I spend a great deal of time away from home. I basically live in my van and going out to eat gets expensive. But the trade off money wise is worth it.
    If you DO decide to go this route, save every single fuel receipt from when you fuel up while working, otherwise it will look like you made more money than you actually did when you file taxes. I spend about $300 to $350 a week on fuel. You will get a straight $25/day deduction for food, wither you eat or not. You could probably save in taxes if you don't eat as much. I purchased a coleman single burner stove and started cooking meals in my van to save money. Also if you buy food and fuel at a gas station, keep your food purchases separate from your fuel purchase. Put all your fuel receipts and any receipt from buying tools or paying for vehicle repairs in a folder to show the tax preparer at the end of the year.
    Download an app on your smartphone that keeps track of your miles. That's important too. Apparently individual states will want you to pay taxes if you just even drive thru their state. My job sends me all the way to Detroit MI to Dayton, OH to even Nebraska. I've actually seen the bridge going into Canada. I got excited about the idea of finally getting to travel outside the US and applied for my passport! If the tax part frightens you, just let the tax guy worry about it. You just save your receipts and log your miles.
    If you want to start doing LTL runs, you could probably get away with using your car but go for a work van eventually, it doesn't require a CDL and you can drive without having your own authority. Also the newer your vehicle is, the better it looks when you go to a freight broker for work. My van is a 2004, Ford E-150. I feel lucky that my company puts my van to work, especially sice now it has over 300k miles. But I feel better now that I have enough money to buy a replacement vehicle in case my van cluncks out. But I try to stretch out the use of my van. I've learned quite a bit about vehicle repair from watching youtube videos.

      You're right. I work for a class 1 railroad. We're busy as ever. All people have to do is look at the yearly profits for class 1 railroads. They're all in the billions. Also, the "average salary" for a conductor is misleading. You can work as much as you want to, and basically make as much as you want to. So for a single man with no kids and a willingness to be gone from home often, he can make 6 figures no problem.

It's literally an incredibly under appreciated and underpaid job most of us do it because it's extremely rewarding definitely not for the money. These numbers come from like one or two departments, just look at Houston and the horrible pay those guys get for working in one of the biggest and largest fds in the country not to mention the city screwing the guys pension. More research for sure should have been done

One of them has his own truck and will go for a few months a year and do plant shut downs and some pipeline work, and makes huge money. He's away from home a lot while doing this.
      His apprentice is this Hot lil number I used to date. And even she would make 8G's a month. Plus 145$ tax free a day for living allowance..

      Well, they were specifically mentioning 6-figure salaries, so imma do the math on that:
      To get a 6-figure salary, even at the $30 rate Gail above me mentioned, you'd have to work over 64 hours per week just to break the $100,000 mark.
      So either five 13-hour days, or six 11-hour days, 52 weeks a year (unless you get paid holidays, of course, then maybe 48 weeks per year).
      Even with said holidays, that's just under 3100 hours per year, nigh on 8.5 hours per day, every day. More than 1/3 of your life.
      That said, if you're happy with $50k per year, you could work three 12-hour shifts, or five 7-hour shifts per week and still live comfortably, which is better than what a lot of people get.

I promise you if we didn't have college there would be so much more benefits to a society if we weren't under the pressure of going to college into debt to get that job you dreamed of. College intelligence can come over your life spand as you need it. Not all in 4 years to be sent out for 1 job you wanted when you were 16. To be fair.

    • @michaelkelly7379
      @michaelkelly7379 6 лет назад +8

      Can guarantee you theres no time for that in an Engineering program. Step into a college before passing judgements. Often find these arguments are made by someone who never developed the level of critical thinking required to not believe every word of infowars. Corporations don't give a fuck about your degree anymore.. it's more about personal growth and development. Being able to entertain the point of views of others without accepting them fully yourself is the sign of a wise man. You seem to sure of yourself dive, if you ever want to grow as a person you need to realize that maybe you're wrong.
