Mr. Alpert came to Portland Oregon in the mid 70s. He bought dinner for his band and a lot of other people at a restaurant near downtown. One waitress took care of them all night, and he went out of his way to make sure she was well treated, and then gave her the best tip she got ever at that job. She needed it. She was my mother, and we were scraping by. He didn't have to do that. Thank you Mr. Alpert.
Jeffrey Miller He cries because must feel some of blame due a frustated release of Karen's solo album. She stayed devastated, and she was very ill. If that recording had released, she would have cured and she still would be alive.
Jeffrey Miller Rick Henry: I ask every fan I interview about Karen's solo album. I feel it's one of the most important albums in the entire output of Carpenters/Carpenters related music. Had the album been released in 1980 do you think it would have changed the way people viewed Karen Carpenter? Randy Schmidt: I think it might have given her a bit more edge than she’d had in the past. I do NOT think it would have done anything to tarnish her image or reputation. RH: Do you think her solo album may have helped or hindered sales of subsequent Carpenters albums? RS: If anything it would have helped. By 1980, the Carpenters’ albums were not selling like they did even five years earlier. It would have surely garnered more attention and sales than Passage and Made in America. It would have at least had people talking. RH: Do you think the album would have changed Karen's course of life in anyway? If so how? RS: I have said this before, but I firmly believe that Karen’s whirlwind romance with Tom Burris was a rebound from the disappointment and eventual shelving of the solo album. Had she been releasing and promoting an album in the spring of 1980, she would not have had time to devote to that relationship. In that manner, I do feel it would have changed the course of her life in a very big way. Also, I wish she’d stood up to Richard and the folks at A&M. Herb Alpert never liked their A Kind of Hush album, but it wasn’t stopped. There wasn’t pressure to go back and redo everything. It was terribly crushing for Karen to have this album-her most personal, creative product ever-deemed unworthy of release. Her friends told me she never fully trusted Richard after that. Their relationship was damaged and you can sense the tension in the interviews they did together for Made in America. Taken of karenannecarpenter.blogspot.pe/2012/10/randy-schmidt-interview-with-superfan.html
Out of all the music that I listen to, and I listen to music from country to rock to jazz and everything in between, Herb Alpert is by far and away my favorite artist and always will be. in the 60s when I was growing up, I listened to Herb Alpert on the hi-fi because my parents were huge Herb Alpert fans. The best that ever was and ever will be Herb Alpert and the TJ B.
My daughter is a participant in the theater program at HSA (Harlem School of the Arts). We are beneficiaries of his generosity. Starting Feb. 24, 2017, they will begin performing their interpretation of Euripides' Trojan Women. She is very excited about it and is looking forward to acting in this production. The sparkle in her eyes, as a result of having this outlet to express her creativity...my words would be inadequate to express how much I truly appreciate the fact that he saw fit to give both his money and his time to HSA. It makes her spirit "Rise!"
When Herb Alpert passes one day he will be remembered as a great man and musician who inspired so many others with his music and generosity. If the question is asked, was the world a better place because of his life, the answer would be an easy yes. As a trumpet player myself in the 1960's his music was such a joy to play and listen to. While in a rock band in 1969I got to play the wonderful song "A Taste of Honey" on stage and it meant so much to me with my admiration for Herb Alpert and at that moment understood the real joy of giving to others while performing. His music will be loved long after all of us are just memories. He is a true legend.

Got to meet Mr. Alpert & get his autograph when I was about 10 yrs. old (he & his band stayed @ my dad's motel after a gig). Nicest & most gracious man in the world! Bless you, Sir...I'll never forget how much you made me feel I mattered to you. Love your music, too!
Since I was a kid growing up in the 60s I listened to Herb Alpert and the TJ Brass, my parents used to play his music at parties and it was such a positive lively sound, playful fun music spectacularly played, what a treat. But now that I know a little about the man behind the music, I can see that it came from a kind loving soul who wanted to bring everybody joy. This is embodied in his generosity and art, Is this a cool guy or what?
Herb and the TJB - among the first records I bought as a kid in the 60's. Always thought Herb was the coolest - this proves it - true for all these decades. Good on you Herb and Lani! And Karen ... some people just seem to have the voice of God in them when they play or sing. She was one of them.
Wow, what a mensch (Yiddish word for a humble, decent man)!!! I've absolutely loved his music since I was a kid growing up in the 60s, and its so wonderful to see, that despite all his success, achievements and wealth, that he's still such a beautiful down-to-earth unassuming gentle soul. Herb Alpert already gave back. My mother was a fan and filled my childhood with the Tijuana Brass. I am a firm believer that we must promote and pass down our rich musical heritage. Good for Herb Alpert.

+Marion H So did my mom. I liked his music when she would put on his albums but I didn't really appreciate him until I grew up and that is when I also noticed how handsome he was.
I grew up listening to my Dad play Herb's 8 Tracks and records, I listened to Lonely Bull thousands of times, I took up playing trumpet so I could learn to play along. Dad played guitar and I played trumpet to the records. Every time I play those songs they bring about the happiest feelings. Herb Alpert has brought so much to so many. A better world of music...a better world in general.
And as a record company exec at A&M, he gave so many other stellar artists their big break. He is a pebble that was dropped into the pond of modern music.

Helped to deepen my love of music. Got to play backup for him, as a Sophmore in High School ('64), With about 1000 other HS band members at Kent State (OH) where He, Al Hurt and Doc Sevrenson played "Trumpeters Holiday". One of the great experiences of my young life. Thanks for the memory!!!
I started my pro radio DJ career in the fall of 1962 and "The Lonely Bull" came in at the same time so I've been a fan since he started. However I thank and salute Herb for the greatest gift he gave to my ears and my heart, signing Karen and Richard to A&M records. It was the perfect label for them and Herb gave them the support they needed. Thank you Herb, always!
Yeah, I just watched a documentary on Herb, and Richard Carpenter described Herb saying to him "Hope we have some hits" at the time when Herb signed them. That did work out, didn't it!
I learned so much watching this! Herb and his beautiful wife Lani Hall are awesome! Always loved her vocals on Fool on the Hill, and Herb is my man crush forever. Love you both!
Herb Alpert was and still is one of my favorite musicians. I grew up listening to Herb and the Tijuana Brass and I still enjoy listening to his music. I have almost all of Herb's early albums. Herb Alpert is one of a kind. Keep up the good work,Herb!
My Legendary hero of music that my late parents raised me and my siblings with his music one of a kind Herb, keep the beautiful lovely music for more generations Amen.❤💜😘😘🙏🙏🎼🎤🎶🎵
Herb and Lani seem to be enjoying an idyllic life, and they deserve it - all that talent they have shared with the world. I've seen them perform four times and they are elegant, exquisite.
I remember in the 60's I was about 10 we were at a friends house, no one could afford swimming pools, but they had a big backyard, and they had a slip and slide. Playing loudly in the house was his dad's Herb Alpert record. It seemed that it was one hit after another.
Herb Alpert made, and still does with his wife Lani, make a tremendous impact on many people. Because he transfers an 'inspiring feeling' from the art of music to the ear and soul of the listener. I think it pertinent to mention the wonderful inspiration and influence that Lani, my favorite vocalist, has given as well. Listening to Herb & Lani, with their great back up group, Herb still expresses 'that feeling', and Lani is outstanding as well. -- and special inspiration to my start in music as well.
Herb is a truly a class act. It made me smile when I found out he didn't hesitate to give back by writing a half-million dollar check to keep that school open. If more multimillionaires would do things like this -- instead of just hoarding more money than they could possibly need in a lifetime -- this world would be a better place.
@Willie Gordon: Merely wishing for greater displays of "voluntary" charity in this world than that which already exists doesn't quite make someone a communist. Though I can see how confusing this might be to easily-triggered simpletons considering how poorly skilled they are at differentiation.
I was a grade school kid learning music in public school in the sixties as he became popular. I remember buying The Beat of the Brass on vinyl. I've been fortunate to have spent most of my adult life as a career trombonist, and it's hard to measure or describe the impact not just of TJB, of the MANY wonderful artists cultivated through A&M. My influences have come from many places, but Herb, Sergio Mendez, and so many other A&M artists remain close to my heart.
Musician, composer, singer, bandleader, record producer/executive, painter, sculptor, philanthropist .... what a truly talented and fully fulfilled life this man is having. And he is still performing and touring at his age...what is he 70 odd? Best wishes to you man, keep on trucking.
It's so refreshing to to know that incredible talent and success can come from such a humble person. His music has brought such joy and his commitment to help musical talent in others flourish is much appreciated.
I saw this interview on Sunday morning.....I never got over Herbs sensitivity to Karens passing as he bowed his head and caught himself w emotion......!! A lot of us have not gotten over Karens passing.....including Herb Albert! I was lucky as I met Karen at our dentist office in Downey! She was pretty in person when she was 26 in Oct 1976...she was kind and gracious to me when I asked her a few questions! What a day!!! I've met a lot of celebrities in my life but none who impressed me like Karen!!
That's lovely and it doesn't surprise me about Karen.

A special man indeed. A&M were justly positioned & rightly revered. Theirs was the deftest of touches, & new artists needed that fatherly advocacy. Cheers Herb, thanks for all the joy.
The first time I ever flew on a plane was my trip to Hawaii , I was so nervous but listened to Herb Alberts album all the way there and back , it certainly helped me a lot , thank you Mr Albert
One of my favorite interviews ever! I have always liked Herb Alpert, and his music, but after seeing this I have a new admiration and respect for him and Lani. They are truly blessed people and are sharing their blessings. What a wonderful example. We should all try to be more caring and giving as they are. God bless you both.
I have always LOVED Herb Alpert's trumpet from my 'young days' of hearing his music on "The Dating Game" and on...now after watching this clip of him and his beautiful wife and how they have 'given back' by way of the Harlem School of Music my appreciation has considerably GROWN! Much love & respect to you and your wife as well! ♥♥

A living Legend. The horn personified. The greatest trumpeter since the beginning of time! And a humble one at that, one who brushes away his colossal accomplishments as if it is nothing! The TJB lives! And, thanks for bringing all those awesome artists through A & M Records...I write this drinking from my A & M Records cup!
Your life and music is a breath of fresh clean air. You are the family spirit, inspiration, and life energy for us all. Thank you for my cousin. I owe you. I wish you happiness always.
My Mom and Dad bought me a trombone when I was 10 years old back in 1963. Herb and his band made quite an impact on us kids in the high school band and our church cyo drum & bugle corps! I still have and play all the albums after 50 years!
I still dance to, and play my trumpet comb with aluminum foil, along with my late brother, to the tune of the old Casino Royale theme (the one with Peter Sellers), and A Taste of Honey. I was not able to afford a trumpet, but boy, did we have fun! Thanks, Herb.
I have enjoyed Herb Alpert most of my life, when I was a small child, I enjoyed his music, and still today I fell happy when I hear his music, Herb Alpert is Amazing......he always will be to me

What a life, well-lived. The estate is incredible. The artistic talent is amazing. His musical contributions are fantastic. And yet he still seems a very humble guy. I remember in the '70s thinking that the best-quality vinyl records I bought were always from A&M. They always has the best sound reproduction and they were the first I recall to provide a plastic liner for the record's paper sleeve. They cared about what their products sounded like.
I'd recommend "Mr A and Mr M: The Story of A&M Records" if you haven't already seen it. They delve into: the attention to artists needs and, the attention to artwork on album covers, etc. It was the "mom and pop store" run by people who had a passion. Looks to have been a cool place to have been a musician and/or other employee. Just the setting of Charlie Chaplin's old studio is cool vibes!
Still listening in 2020! My parents had what I consider the best album of Herb Alpert and the TJB, What Now My Love, back in 1966, it stayed #1 for 9 weeks, a great album to listen to, as were all of those TJB albums!
Herb Alpert and Lani Hall should live forever with youth awarded by God. They impacted me since I was about 13 years old, when I first heard Lani's angel voice playing. It was Fool on a Hill, I remember. I imagined the angel singing was gorgeous. And, she is. Herb Alpert's Route 101 is forever amazing, inspiring, transporting me into the past with lights flashing, feeling the breeze as I travel at what seems lighting speed on route 101, the 405, or highway 1 PCH. Veronicabette, Crestline CA
It's so good to see someone who has such talent and has made a successful, full life by his terrific work, and not fallen into drugs and debauchery like so many others. I'm so glad! I've always loved Herb Alpert, a huge part of my happiest years. Thanks, Sunday Morning.
Incredible man and couple - his music brought me countless hours of enjoyment in some of the darkest and, thank God, the lightest, moments of my life. I've often wondered how he's doing and so happy to see this, few people really deserve to have it so well but I for one believe he and his loved ones do.
I played Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass on a 1951 Webcor portable record player (78/45/33 RPM!!!) until I wore out the records. This was before I found other music, of course, such as classical, renaissance, folkloric, folk, pop and so on. But "The Brass" never left me. I think that Alpert is one of my musical inspirations.
Just saw Herb and Lani here in Sin City and the show was beyond superb...but the true goodness that flows from the trumpet in his hand is outdone by the GOODNESS and LOVE Herb has given back to the world...A Renaissance Man who is an AMERICAN treasure...
She touched me too I never cry for any artists like she "chokes me up" Idk why.I cried when Dr.John(NOLA)died, however Karen I've been crying over her for years.I'm not ashamed she's the only artist outside of my family I cry for when I think about her no exaggeration
I was one on the Biggest Karen Fans .. When her burial vault was in Cypress , Ca I went there to leave flowers .. and Did ..Later Richard moved her to be " Closer to Him " .. Apropos
@@bradfordhammond8689 I LOVE HERB. What a wonderful and talented man. I grew up listening to the Carpenters and know the story of their rise to astounding success and the part that Herb played in it at his A& M record studio where I believe ALL of the Carpenters songs were recorded. It doesn't surprise me that he chokes up when thinking of Karen. She was so young and talented and it truly is a loss that so many were devastated by. Including myself. I was just listening to her today. Some days I can't listen. The voice of an angel. I miss you Karen.

Thank you Herb Alpert. I was thrilled as a kid in junior high when I figured out how to play the lonely bull..😊
Most morally satisfying to see a great artist succeed in every way.
Herb Alpert was and still is one of my favorite musicians. I grew up listening to Herb and the Tijuana Brass and I still enjoy listening to his music. I have almost all of Herb's early albums. Herb Alpert is one of a kind. Keep up the good work,Herb!
Herb has it all - Looks, Talent, Style, Class & great lungs! "This girl's in love with you"
lovely man, lovely woman. accomplished artists! had the privilege of seeing then live ❤🎺
What a wonderful story. Thanks for sharing!
My Legendary hero of music that my late parents raised me and my siblings with his music one of a kind Herb, keep the beautiful lovely music for more generations Amen.❤💜😘😘🙏🙏🎼🎤🎶🎵
Wow! He's been one of favorites for years. Quite a story.
Totally agree awesome story
Herb Alpert is a true renaissance man. He provided the musical backdrop for my youth. Talk about a life well-lived, wow.
Awesome memory, it really resonates with me. And thanks for making me chuckle at the "slip and slide" reference. Being a kid used to be so fun!
I forgot: I also slow-danced to This Guy's In Love With You, with a lovely girl, and I will never forget that! Thanks again, Herb. Keep em coming.
That's charming.
Those of you who would like Mr. Alpert to receive the Kennedy Center Honors, raise your hand.
I love those two💖 pure talent in that house
Musician, composer, singer, bandleader, record producer/executive, painter,
sculptor, philanthropist .... what a truly talented and fully fulfilled life this man is having. And he is still performing and touring at his age...what is he 70 odd? Best wishes to you man, keep on trucking.
+Ryan Hill He is 80, now; DOB March 31, 1935. This video was done sometime in 2010.

It's so refreshing to to know that incredible talent and success can come from such a humble person. His music has brought such joy and his commitment to help musical talent in others flourish is much appreciated.
I like this comment. Because humble people do very well even though some think not. Nice comment sir.
Herb Alpert’s music is so fantastic and wonderful and he is a amazing musician
Sorry it's Alpert
He's an amazing human being! Made me tear up when he choked talking about Karen Carpenter. What he's done for the Harlem School is wonderful.
Thank you so much for posting this. What a great man, and couple!
A LOVE STORY TO SEE . WHAT CLASS AND WEALTH SHOULD BE.
Awesome musician and artist, but even better than that - an awesome human being! Great coverage.
Route 101 is my favorite tune. He is so so fine. Gifted man. I love him.
I agree with we should all try to be more caring and giving. The world would a more loving place for all. Love those lines.

Total flashback of "The Dating Game"!
Can wait to she Herb Alpert at the Tucson Jazz festival. My trumpet hero for many years!
I use to dance with his music at my grandma's, the best trumpet player ever.
Wow, what a great interview. Grew up on Herb Alpert in the late sixties and early seventies. What a humble, generous guy...
What a great guy & good couple together - a life well lived inspires us all. As for the music, it always lifts me up. Thanks so much for sharing.
My Mom and Dad bought me a trombone when I was 10 years old back in 1963. Herb and his band made quite an impact on us kids in the high school band and our church cyo drum & bugle corps! I still have and play all the albums after 50 years!
Such a genius. It takes me back to the 80s
Thank you Herb and Lani for supporting the arts! (stands up and applauds).

Really enjoyed this interview!! Herb Alpert is the real deal... What an amazing life he has lived & what a blessings he has been to so many!!.
Herb Alpert is responsible for me starting trumpet at school aged 11 and playing his music, thanks Herb! Still loving the music!
Herb Alpert is a real MENSCH!!!! He and his wife are wonderful for sharing what they have.
I like to see good people live the good life. Not many of us can.
He signed Karen Carpenter! Wow!
Hats off to Herb Alpert
Thanks so much for sharing Herb Albert segment - much appreciated. I was deeply touched by his contribution towards Arts education. So moving....
Great video. What a talented man, and it was wonderful to know that he's giving back. Love his music, too.
Just saw Herb and Lani here in Sin City and the show was beyond superb...but the true goodness that flows from the trumpet in his hand is outdone by the GOODNESS and LOVE Herb has given back to the world...A Renaissance Man who is an AMERICAN treasure...
Makes it through the whole interview just fine...until Karen's name comes up.
Then, the tears.
She made an impact on people within the business too.
Apropos
Yes Karen made a big impact in the business as her friends all witnessed a quality of kindness from Karen for all of her business friends!
Thank u so much for posting this for all us Herb fans.Much appreciated x
My favorite all times. Thank you for the gift of music and inspiration.
Such great music you wrote and played!! “Close to You” too!! And way-to-go for your other accomplishments!!
Saw Herb and Lani in San Francisco several years ago and they were simply excellent.
Thank u Lord for HERB ALPERT !! what an awesome man he is .So very Blessed and Giving of himself .And for paying it forward for the school of arts and music .He is a legend !! ❤🙏❤
ive always loved herb alperts music from a very young age.....i listened to his music alot in my 20s n 30s too.....it never gets old.....something classic, jazzy and iconic, resonating with a ring of Spainish something.....not sure how else to describe it.....sure surprized to find out none of them were Spanish....love all of it....
Just saw Herb and Lani Hall in concert. They still sound amazing!
