This was by far the best episode yet. One of the greatest golfers of all time - Bobby Jones always emphasized the importance of always being in a state of relaxation. Tension is the killer of the golf swing and any attempt to try and force yourself into some kind of definite posture will more times then not result in something less than undesirable. Whether it be mental or physical, relaxation should always be at the front of your mind when approaching golf. Bobby Jones specifically said " If there is a watch word or slogan that a golfer ought always to remember, it is avoid tension, and it is at the very beginning of the swing, before the action is commenced that he is most likely to tighten up. If he tries too hard to assume any prescribed or perfectly definite posture, he is not likely to be free from strain. His first position should be as natural and comfortable as he can possibly make it."
This video and series has been great! Shows the extreme balance that golfers have to find between the physical and the mental and how each play a roll in influencing the other. Seems like Lauren is building a plan to help her maximize the return on the technical coaching which will help her blow past 90 and make her a great player.
Great advice for golfers of all abilities. When I teach it’s always from a standpoint of not overwhelming the student, and to keep a fun relaxed approach. Great video. A++
I really can't wait to see you teaching her the putting side of the game. You are one of the best putters I have seen and I believe alot of that is ur ability to read greens so well..
I know Lauren is going to do it. I got faith. She’s going to put it all together when the time is right. I freakin love this channel. Also - just an observation…and I’m not a Golf coach, I just love the game & just observing…I felt like I saw maybe a bit of casting near the mid down swing (Lauren). I recognize it because I had trouble with it. It’s definitely not in every swing, just occasionally. Just want to contribute to Lauren’s success. I’m emotionally invested now😂🤣
Hi Claire. I've started playing golf 9 yrs ago. It's only recently that my game has improved thanks to watching your videos. So just to say thanks for the tips😊
Excellent CH.. this series is absolutely amazing and this vlog just takes the series to another level. If I may, CH this should be a regular part of your vlogging because it's so beneficial to us...the average golfer....🤍 your work Claire⛳
Great video! his calmness is unbelievable, stories with a purpose. And I understand about the "too many thoughts" while playing. Consider this .. you have a pretty good idea overall of what to do, and like Claire said, think of just one thing. Don't take too much time over the ball before swinging .. "think long, think wrong" it'll allow a bunch of thoughts to creep in! Get yourself ready, then swing .. without rushing .. TEMPO is key! Keep grinding, Lauren!
From now on I'm just going to clear my mind and concentrate solely on making the tee land on my should like a parrot 🦜😄 Lauren is getting better and better, it's a lot of info coming at her but it's great knowledge and she's adapting. This series has been amazing.
I Really hope your channel continues to grow. You are the real deal and the content you are consistently putting out is the best I have seen particularly on golf related topics. Well done.
I am so rooting for this experience. This has inspired me to bite the bullet, get the equipment and start learning as well. Long time wish, no excuse when I live across from a course. Every installment has some real gems for people that even just want to start. And Lauren is hitting for 90s and below. Hell yeah. edit: would also say that Manolo's was halfway mental teaching too lol.
I'm really liking this series. So interesting to see all the elite coaches different perspectives on teaching and all of them seemingly improving Lauren instantly, despite all being fairly different in style and approach. Very interesting.
This is just so valuable advice. Thanks Jamie and Claire for bringing this to us. I am also trying to quiet down my mind and get focused and dialled through my PSR. Where I still fail is when I walk up to my ball on the fairway or whereever it is. Sometimes I just miss the moment to quiet down. Thank you guys.
Oliver, I had the same quirk.. so last ten yards to the ball.. slow the pace to almost a crawl.. works for me. Broke 80 same year I read Gelway's Inner Game Of Golf.
A drill I would recommend that helps with tempo a lot would be hitting wedges with your feet together. It is small swings plus you get short game work. Plus working on low point for better contact. Best of luck you definitely have the ability.
Thumbs up both your posts. I do a lot of drills with the 7 iron, one leg, left hand only, heel an inch apart.. 9 to 3 o clock short pitch.. There is one clip on U tube and I cannot find it now. A drill for the backswing. I tend to 'lean left'( never at the polls,, tho) mis-hits are like a 5 iron.. Hip turn was too busy and after 2 months of boring drills.. top of the bk swing feels good.. On the range, I sometimes hold the top for a couple seconds.. shot still goes good, 5 iron for that drill.. Started playing at age 14. in the year 1959 and Claire is like maybe a 1 hpc after 6-7 years.= Cheers
Look at the zen golf mechanic site. It integrates the ground pressure focus you worked on with no swing thoughts because the ground pressure swings the club for you. It also integrates your yoga movements and what he was saying about just focus on the shot shape. Good luck.
The two of you are soo sweet. Very good idea to talk to Mr. Mulligan (what a great name by the way!) I learned golf more than 30 years back on a student exchange in Australia 🇦🇺 and always loved the game and always will! Unfortunately I haven’t really played the last 20 years but started again last year. This year I am playing for a small (beginners) team here in Karlsruhe (Germany) I am only down to HCP 11 but will try to improve much more. I love watching your videos and also stream almost every one from the two nice guys (GM Golf) let’s have fun and enjoy the most wonderful game in life
Her swing looks pretty good for still being a beginner. As long as she loves the game and being outside and playing with friends this will be a hobby that will give you great satisfaction and enjoyment for years to come. Just don't take it so seriously. Good luck.
Lauren you do need a swing thought on what to do. Then once it's ingrained, then it is less thought about. Let's stop with the full swing and perfect the mini version of the swing a solid compressed chip? I'm the king of chipping. Why, because I had to work through an injury and it took 7 years to recover. Chipping was all I could do.
Anytime I go low with my score, I find I have one thought at a time. For instance, on a fairway shot, analyze the location to select the club. Once that decision is finished, it's done, then set the grip, set the stance, breathe, swing with rhythm and finish. Thinking of these things serially (start the thought, finish the thought) helps avoid doubts, multiple swing thoughts, multiple swing mechanics etc. from clouding your mind.
Claire, have Lauren watch Patrick Cantlay’s pre shot routine, how he rocks back and forth before he takes the shot. Not saying to do this exactly, but get a gig of her own!😎👊🏻
I watched Trent last night try to break 90. He’s not going to do it unless they turn that series into something like this. You can’t be terrible at golf and play below bogey golf. You’d think with all that money and connections they’d be making something similar to this but all they do is record 1 round a week and that’s probably all he does. This is how you break 90, you practice. When Lauren gets to where she’s not duffing shot very often and she will get there, she’s going to have to get good around the green and inside 100. Claire will have her rolling the ball way better than she needs to be to break 90
I try to let the club do the work I'm just the guide the club. Clearing the brain is the tough part working progress thanks for this and all your videos
I'm also a beginner golfer at the age of 60+ and constantly have to remind myself to put all of the thoughts of what "I'm supposed to do" and trying to copy all of the professional golfers out of mind, and just hit the ball.
Focus on technique, swing, body, etc on the range. Once you get to the course you play with what you brought. On the course, forget the mechanics and focus on the target. Let the muscle memory take over at that point and just play what your ability is that day. Change your target if you need to during the round (if you're hooking it, try playing a holding fade instead, for example.) but still focus on the target. If you focus on target every shot, you aren't focusing on a score. You forge the last shot and focus on the next target...be it the next fairway, the next green or the next putt.
One Big thing I have noticed is that, Lauren doesn’t come over the top when she uses the lag shot. If she can make the same move with an iron, I think she will be well on her way to be a better golfer. Good luck!👊🏻❤️
Furyks 58 was great but Homero Blanca shot a 55 in a tournament. Although the record keepers said the course was to short and did not recognize it. 6500 yards was to short apparently.
her right hand needs to roll to the right (looking at that last swing in this video) where her thumb is closer to resting on top of the shaft. . Where it is positioned now (target side of the shaft) she will continue to swing "out-to-in". For tempo have her count 1-2-3-4. 1 is half way back in her back swing .. 2 is at the top of her back swing .. 3 is a pause and 4 is the down swing. Over some time this will give her a consistent tempo in her entire swing and ONE thing to think about as opposed to having everything to think about when standing over the ball. Breaking 90 is a large challenge when compared to the "average" womens score of like 108 for beginners. I hope she doesn't get discouraged and quit if she finds this goal unachievable.
Thanks Claire, know i have to get golf kinda out of my mind too score better...lol...jk....this will help me though...thinking about everything when i approach my ball.
If she is going to break 90. Just teach her good fundamentals. I think it might be better to back off a bit and let her just learn at her own pace. Clear her mind and just enjoy the game. She needs to know it's ok to struggle and hit bad shots. But the most important thing idea to relax and enjoy yourself. The score you shoot shouldn't matter at all. In fact I would advise her not to even keep track. Enjoy the outdoors and the company your with. Learn to love the game! All the rest will follow in time.
Nelly Korda is a fantastic player and I am sure she'll regain her number one ranking in the future, but as of Jul. 7, 2022, she is ranked 3rd in the world. #1 payer in the world is Jin Young Ko and followed by Minjee Lee #2.
Good series. How does L trust her muscle memory if she doesn't have a memory of swinging correctly? L is still casting from the top and has no concept of accelerating the clubhead w/o actively using her hands. A paradox (swinging not hitting) to which you alluded and she has to unravel. How? miming, observational learning, insight, revelation, myelination, or does she dig it out of the dirt.
I think it is time for Lauren to play on a short course...all par 3s maybe...or maybe par 3s with a few short par 4s....not for the score but for the fun of it....she gets lots of mulligans too if needed.....that makes it fun plus relaxing
You should have her play from inside 100 yards to start now that she is dialing in the swing all can be learned in my opinion ball placement, contact, aim, and touch longer shots come later
yo when ur in your swing it is visual. Creat the thought picture the flag and pole to bottum of the hole then see the ball coming reverasal to your club out of the hole bac to your club u taking aim on the prsiscisn stop to hit and swing away .. havey Pinick in the THe Little Red book say s take aim and swing hard as you can w frong leg stillish
With respect, I don't think an amateur needs to work on mental aspects to overcome a traffic jam of information. The brain doesn't "get" things immediately. Lauren, my 2 cents, just pick the thing you liked the most that you think helps you the most and just think of that to improve your old swing. After you're comfortable with it and it becomes part of your sub-conscious, move on to another aspect. We can't force things into our sub-conscious minds. They have to arrive there through repetition.
This woman just needs a lot of lessons from a good pro. Forget breaking 90. She first has to build a golf swing that will produce decent shots. You can't play golf hitting from the top. The symmetry of her swing is pretty good. But you can't generate power or clean contact, take the club to the top of the backswing and starting the club back down with the arms. I would have thought 125 is a good first barrier. The max handicap in golf is 54. 72(par) + 54 = 126. Getting under that would mean you've hit the level to qualify as an official player of golf. I would start there and do an episode once a month about trying to get 5 lower every month until you get to 90 in 6 or 7 months.
Jim Furyk: yes he's shot the lowest score in tour history, a 58. He also plays glacially slow, which is a bad example for all the amateurs who watch him.
Am I the only one that can see that she's swinging in the wrong direction? Everyone who's good at golf has learned to do something they're completely unaware of, which is why they can't teach it or explain it. I can and do.
I miss Lauren😢 hopefully she’s continuing with this journey we call golf. A update on the channel is needed!
This is one of the best golf RUclips videos I’ve ever watched

You both seemed very 'Zen' after that session! Good stuff! Loving this series!

was it Yogi that said....half the game is 50% mental. This was a great video. Lauren, you will reach your goals with your talent and support system!

What is Lauren shooting these days 95? How far to break 90?
With respect, I don't think an amateur needs to work on mental aspects to overcome a traffic jam of information. The brain doesn't "get" things immediately. Lauren, my 2 cents, just pick the thing you liked the most that you think helps you the most and just think of that to improve your old swing. After you're comfortable with it and it becomes part of your sub-conscious, move on to another aspect. We can't force things into our sub-conscious minds. They have to arrive there through repetition.
Stay tuned folks for the next weeks episode were Claire tries to have her friend get Hypnotised to think shes Annika Sorenstam!!!
Jack Nicklaus was the most even keeled player I ever watched. good or bad he never showed any emotion until the last stroke.
The swing is:
Start hands back with shoulder turn and when club is in slot at the top:
Bottom up. Downswing starts with legs/hip rotation and not the hands.
Until this is grooved, you can't play golf very well. All you will do is hit fat shots behind the ball with no power.
FWIW Claire has a wonderful swing. Your friend could be a rival. No short cut. Practice and lessons with the best pro available.
Would you consider playing 18 holes with Paige Spiranic? The amount of views would unbelievable! It would be amazing for all of your fans.
Why is she hitting off of a tee with an iron?
You can see that coach try to hide his… bon*r lol
Please buy lapel mics
I think it’s not realistic to break 90 in 60 days for a new golfer. Why not set a goal of breaking 100 first?.?
I would have thought 125 is a good first barrier. The max handicap in golf is 54. 72(par) + 54 = 126. Getting under that would mean you've hit the level to qualify as an official player of golf. I would start there and do an episode once a month about trying to get 5 lower every month until you get to 90 in 6 or 7 months.
Jim Furyk: yes he's shot the lowest score in tour history, a 58. He also plays glacially slow, which is a bad example for all the amateurs who watch him.
Pull down with you left little finger! Everything else will follow.

I'm way under 90 she can start by breaking me.
Jamie Mulligan? That can’t be his real last name??? If it is, he was obviously born to be in golf.
