While I understand Ghai's point about giving creative carte blanche to the creative team, filmmaking fortunately or unfortunately is a much more collective artform than say painting or sculpture, so a fresh angle or insight may come from outside the team. For example, I was surprised to learn recently that the idea of making the Rashmika character in Sita Ramam an Indophobe came from the producers of the film, not the director (who is also the writer). Originally, the character was a journalist investigating the story of Ram but had no personal axe to grind. Arguably, the change was for the better since it added emotional complexity to the revelations later in the film.
And producer is part of cretaive team. He is talking about monopoly of stars. Actors ruling the the business if terms of money and power. Creatives job is to service the star and thats a bad way to make movie.
@@randomrohan1367 Well stars are part of the creative team too. If a producer can be considered creative, surely the star/lead actor is too. I believe he was referring to studio heads, investors, distributors and yes producers as being too interfering. Later on he talks about stars interfering as well, but that's a complicated debate outside the scope of my original comment.
Giving suggestions and forcing your opinions on the director and moulding the film according to your imagination are different things. If one if doing the latter, then what is the need of having a director.
@@mungerilalkintrusivethoughts The question you raise is how to distinguish suggestions from interference. To some degree that distinction depends upon the context and the players involved. In the case of very successful or highly respected directors, I imagine there are only suggestions and no interference. Everyone below that may have to deal with suggestions that cross the line into interference.
