Hey guys hope you enjoyed this interesting selection, I just had to show Alex this one! Let us know if you’ve heard of Primus before and your thoughts on them! Have a great Monday guys and see you on Patreon! 😉🔥🤟🏻
Andy & Alex Les Claypool knew Kirk Hammet from Metallica forever and they needed a bassist. Claypool auditioned and Metallica refused him because he was too good for them and wanted him to do his own thing. TRUE STORY. There’s You Tube videos about it.
Tommy the Cat is GOAT but make sure you react to the Rhinoplasty version. Its a fantastic live version and won't get you confused as to why Tom Waits is singing(on the lp).
For me and people I met is not underrated at all, often quoted as a great rock drummer, respected by drummers and a lot of people consider it was the better drummer of Primus, even if I like the others too.
Huge Primus fan here. Their debut album: Frizzle Fry is super underrated. All the songs are amazing especially To defy the laws of tradition, Too many puppies, John the fisherman, Frizzle Fry and more.
They played the same lineup at Lollapalozza in 92 or 93. Claypool was playing an upright electric cherry red bass. I came out of the pit with a boot print on my face. Good times!
Yes primus does suck I found this out after sailing the 7 seas of cheese with mr.krinkle and going over the falls and finding myself shaking hands with beef with those damn blue collar tweakers watching the hole time ...p.s. I found that damn big drown beaver damn thing bit me to
I wasn't sure the song based on the title of the video, but I remember this song VIVIDLY from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (the first one) on Playstation back in the day. Love it
"...purposefully playing with dissonance" - Bang, you nailed it...nice. A+ young man. But they're like Zappa, takes a while for your mind to wrap around what is happening audibly and the intention.
I’m totally with you on Zappa, and he was an amazing guitar player too, but not sure these young lads are ready to go down the Zappa rabbit hole just yet. lol !
Seas of Cheese came out when I was just entering highschool.. and my friends were all about it. I can certainly appreciate Les's bass playing, but Primus was too out there to be something I listened to regularly. Instead I've got them grouped inside my head alongside bands like the Dead Milkmen. That said, my favorite song from the album is still American Life.
Although this song is dope, everybody reacts to this song and Tommy the Cat. They have much better songs. Try Frizzle Fry, To Defy the Laws of Tradition, or Too Many Puppies.
The record this was from, "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" was released in '91. Les Claypool was VERY influenced by great jazz players, like Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten, and, the late, GREAT Jaco Pastorius. If you're gonna react to a Primus cover, react to their cover of "Have A Cigar". Probably, the best Pink Floyd cover ever, IMO.
Anon Nymous... big Pink Floyd fan here. I just now listened to the Primus cover of "Have a Cigar" for the first time and i would have to agree with your opinion. The guitar work is good but the bass lines are awesome!
I am digging your guy's videos more every time I watch them. You know what you're talking about and it's actually a good thing when you don't always see eye to eye on a song, its what I would call dissimilar cohesion which I guess is an oxymoron but it works, if nothing else you could always use it for a band name.
Les Claypool has a lot of cool projects... Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains (with Bucketheat, Primus drummer Brain, and Parliamint Funkadelic keyboardist Bernie Worrell), Oysterhead (with Phish Guitarist Trey Anastasio and The Police drummer Stewart Copeland), and a few more - all worth checking out.
I once saw The Ramones play live at the Hollywood Palladium and they played Jerry was a racecar driver in between bands setting up and the crowd went nuts and started moshing to just the song played over th PA on CD. Ive never seen happen that by any band or song.
I still love this song after all these year's. I worked at that race track when the video was shot. It was pretty cool to see our racer's on a worldwide scale.
He was actually asked by Kirk Hammet to audition. He and Les are good friends and went to high school together. Kirk Hammet is actually in the video of John The Fisherman. Both James and Lars have heard of Les when he arrived and knew he was WAAAAYYYY to good at bass and to weird for them.
When Cliff Burton was tragically killed in a bus crash with Metallica, the rest of the band survived obviously. The band was doing auditions for a new bassist, and Les Claypool tried out, and Metallica told him he was too good for them his playing was just too out there. That slap bass and his scraping technique is insane. Check My Name is Mudd. Tommy the Cat, Too many Puppies. You really need to enjoy the slap bass playing to enjoy Primus.
I remember this! lol. I really dig the funky vibe. His voice...mmm, yeah. I love when bands do their thing. You're both right on all counts. Alex, great ref. to the Meat Puppets cover. :) And, A&A... Impressed you listened to the virtuoso Charlie Daniels. Good job guys... You sharp dressed men! ;) Have a great day. :))
@@alexfromandyandalex8032 I had a brief flirtation w/ Meat Puppets... But, Nirvana cover w/ Kurt doing that vocal, was it for me. lol :) Add: I double checked and Cris & Curt Kirkwood joined Nirvana on Nirvana Unplugged on Mtv. Greatness!
Never heard this song before, but I listened to the whole thing just to be fair. Now my brain is demanding an apology. You guys got me in trouble with my brain, but I'll let it go this time.
If there was another band that SUCKED as much as PRIMUS, I would mention it... PRIMUS sucks so bad they suck chrome off a trailer hitch thru a garden hose .... I'd rather screw a chimpanzee than listen to Primus.... call it pointless!!!! --You Know EXACTLY What I Mean!!!! :P
Pretty sure I read somewhere that Les Claypool saw King Crimson at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley in either 1982, 1984 or both. I went to both. Freaking life-altering.
Primus was all me and my friends used to listen too when this was new. Les Claypool, the lead singer and bassist, is an amazing talent and the band had a lot of great songs to their repertoire
I agree the unrelenting dissonance can be a bit much, but the key to appreciating this song is realizing Les Claypool is playing two bass lines simultaneously, one of the even being a two-note bassline -- and he's doing it in real time, not one bassline overdubbed with another.
Primus is part of the magic that came out of the 90's alternative fusion era. I love Les Claypool and his bass guitar. Mr Krinkle is a favorite of mine.
If you have a hard time getting your head around Primus at first, listen just for technique, understand what they are doing technically. Les Claypool does more with a bass than most. Drummer has feet for miles. Once you embrace their technique, the songs become easier to understand.
Ok guys, you got to do “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver “ for this old rocker, my nephew turned me on to this one when I was in my late 30s , but it’s to be the one where their crazy cowboy costumes It’s a clever fun song, with good playing, if any thing you’ll get a kick out of it!
Hey! So, Primus lifted the bass line from Elephant Talk by none other than King Crimson! Also, check out their latest, The Desaturated Seven. The whole album is based on a rare, out of print children’s book, The Rainbow Goblins.
Oh... Les Claypool does a lot of side projects and one of his projects is called Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade and they did an concert where they did a complete cover of the Animals album by Pink Floyd - they made a CD, but I haven't been able to find a hard copy of it, and no online sellers sell it. But I was able to find it on RUclips Music.
"Nothing on top but a bucket and a mop, and an illustrated book about birds." Plateau from Nirvana off of their Unplugged album, a cover of a Meatpuppets song. Great album though, check it out
Ler is one of the greats. He used to play pretty normal guitar, but with Primus and Les Claypool, what do you do? Les fills up so much space. So Ler really had to change the way he approached the guitar. And he came up with something amazing and complimentary to such a wacky bass style.
What type of music did you guys listen to growing up? I'm 57 and as a child was exposed to Jazz, rock Blues,Country (Blue Grass to Appalachian) my personal preference I love flamenco. And am a Rock Babe to my soul.
You might recognize Les Claypool's voice from the South Park Theme Song. Guitarist Larry LaLonde was a student of Joe Satriani. They were big in the 90's. Listen to the John the Fisherman, Tommy the Cat, Pudding Time, or Harold of the Rocks from their live debut Suck on This(1989).
Jerry was a race car driver 22 years old Had one too many cold beers one night And wrapped himself around a telephone pole. remember dont drink and drive.
You gotta check out more Primus. The more you listen to them, you'll start grinning at how talented this band is. Quirky indeed. I would recommend either John the Fisherman or Tradgedys coming
As a long time (early 90s) Primus fan, check out "American Life" and "Southbound Pachyderm" they're not the mainstream songs, but damn if they aren't amazing. Les has worked with many, many other artists on side projects over the year. The album "Highball with the Devil" is great stuff. The song "Precipitation" and "Granny's Little Yard Gnome" (a story told from the perspective of a yard gnome) are very entertaining.
Yep, ya definitely gotta check out Primus - "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver!" Here are the lyrics, to start ya off: "Wynona's got herself a big brown beaver and she shows it off to all her friends. One day, you know, that beaver tried to leave her, so she caged him up with cyclone fence. Along came Lou with the old baboon and said "I recognize that smell .... Smells like seven layers .... That beaver eatin' Taco Bell." "Now Rex he was a Texan out of New Orleans and he travelled with the carnival shows. He ran bumper cars, sucked cheap cigars, and he candied up his nose. He got wind of the big brown beaver, so he thought he'd take himself a peek .... But, the beaver was quick and he grabbed him by the kiwis, and he ain't pissed for a week. (And a half!)" "Wynona took her big brown beaver and she stuck him up in the air, said "I sure do love this big brown beaver, and I wish I did have a pair. Now the beaver once slept for seven days, and it gave us all an awful fright .... So, I tickled his chin, and I gave him a pinch, and the bastard tried to bite me." "Wynona loved her big brown beaver, and she stroked him all the time .... She pricked her finger one day, and it occurred to her, she might have a porcupine."
My personal favorite primes songs are to defy the laws of tradition, golden boy, and southbound pachyderm. I’d highly suggest delving into his other projects as well (oysterhead, frog brigade, col claypools bucket of Bernie brains, claypool Lennon delirium)
The world of PRIMUS is indeed quirky, bizarre, and weird. But, once you accept and get past the nasally vocals of Les Claypool and the "out there" lyrics, Primus is friggin awesome. The musical apex of Primus is the song "Tommy The Cat." Unbelievable tune. I saw them live way back in the late 80s with Exodus of all bands (Up in Frisco), and it was a blast.
Ler (guitar player on this) used to be in a Thrash band called possed. His style is the most acid like trip. Bro primus is on another level man. One of the best trips out there Check out their bonaroo live sets
Tommy the Cat is great fun, you gotta watch the video for this one too. Fish On is one the prettiest songs ever composed about fishing, very good stuff!
Hey guys hope you enjoyed this interesting selection, I just had to show Alex this one!

Amazing weird band.
Now add "Tommy the Cat" to your reaction list.
Yes! Fattest funkiest bassline you'll ever hear outside of, well, funk.

PRIMUS - My name is mudd
Jason G there’s a great live recording of them playing this that absolutely rocks.
Moto Dork Ya dude at Woodstock
Jason G 6 foot 2 and rude as hell... 😂
Still Kickin Got to put him in the ground before he starts to smell. 😂
Hell yeah!
Les Claypool is one of the greatest bass players in history. His project with Sean Lennon is phenomenal
Primus did Southpark's theme song.
We're going down to south park. Gonna have ourselves a time.
So come on down to south Park and meat some friends of mine.
I had no idea they did that, thanks for the info , love Southpark😁✌
And robot chicken
Also the Seinfeld bass fills
Thank you Mr Knowitall!!!! That's how you do a Primus diss!!!!
Might I add Les Claypool is a HUGE Rush fan.
First tour I saw Rush on (Counterparts), Primus opened. I think that was the last tour Rush had opening acts.
Ben Fox I think you’re correct on that.
And Metallica. He tried out when Burton died, and they thought he was too weird.
They definitely sounded like they were rush fans
I saw them open for Rush on the Roll The Bones tour in 92
Tim Alexander is one of the most underrated drummers ever!
Ronny Briley according to who? You?
@@michaelrandall2490 yes according to me
Ronny is right. He’s up there with Danny Carey with their flare for polyrhythms

Do "Those Damn Blue Collar Tweakers" from Primus Live at Woodstock!
Primus opened for Tool when I saw them last...about 4 years ago. They've been friends since the early 90's.
They open for tool when i saw them by the pyramids in México.
same here. great times

I've never heard this before but I feel like it's a song I've been trying to write it for years. Good to see someone did it for me
Wow you did Primus!!! I'm impressed as hell. Great choice, not all their stuff is this good. Definitely an acquired taste, like you said. Way to go!
I think I was slightly more negative than I meant to be. It was very interesting
Your enthusiasm did come thru, Alex! Primus is not an easy band to describe!
PRIMUS "Tommy The Cat" is a Must!!! And PRIMUS fans will understand this "PRIMUS SUCKS!!!"

Primus. I was in high school listening to this! They were like the underground type punk. They are awesome!!

Should always be played back to back with Going the Distance by Cake and Jesus Built My Hot Rod by Ministry.
rohmarts OMG I have never done that & now

I'm pretty sure the Primus comparison to King Crimson is "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" and King Crimson's "Elephant Talk"...
Nobody has the guts to play 80’s King Crimson
I remember this from when they supported Rush back in the nineties.

Claypool workin that 6 string bass... eargasm...
Ler (guitar player on this) used to be in a Thrash band called possed. His style is the most acid like trip. Bro primus is on another level man. One of the best trips out there
Check out their bonaroo live sets
Les and Larry were also together in the strange thrash band Blind Illusion whose album The Sane Asylum came out in 1988.
These songs will grow on you I hated it the first time now I love it
Primus was great live!
Tommy the Cat is great fun, you gotta watch the video for this one too. Fish On is one the prettiest songs ever composed about fishing, very good stuff!
Great show. Primus and Rush.
