  • Is it better to save your money and buy a lower premium full ounce sized American Gold Eagle or to buy a fractional AGE each month instead.

As a gold stacker there's a tradeoff to buying gold at the lowest premium versus buying smaller gold coins but on a more frequent basis. If you are buying gold as a hedge against inflation, it is a great strategy to buy gold consistently over many years, but what size gold should you buy?
I look at ten years of historical gold spot price data and known gold coin prices, to compare whether it is better long term to have a single gold ounce coin each year, or ten smaller 1/10 ounce gold coins each year.
Are you a gold stacker? Do you stack fractional Gold Coins or full ounce gold coins? Do you stack US Mint American Gold Eagles? Other gold bullion?
As a gold stacker (or silver stacker) are you adding more physical ounces of precious metals now, or are you holding, or are you selling?

Even though I've heard premiums usually remain on fractional gold when selling, gold to me is more about wealth preservation over the long term
so I'm not worried about liquidity so much. So it's 1oz gold (on sale lol). However, silver can be more suitable as a unit of currency or barter in a SHTF
scenario- or otherwise. Plus the affordability factor makes 1oz silver coins or rounds a no-brainer. In other words, buy both, but for separate reasons.

You forgot to include exit strategy. Here in S. Oregon, the local coin dealer will pay you $1869 for a gold eagle. He will pay you $1909 for 10 1/10th oz gold eagles. That extra $40 closes the gap even further. What clinches it for those of us who are worried about run away inflation, is that with fractionals, you only need to sell as much gold as you need to pay big bills, without having to sit on paper notes that are quickly devaluing. My LCD is good about taking a one ouncer and giving you a fractional AND cash, but you loose a bit due to the premium on the fractional. And who knows if your dealer will do that, or will do it during a economic collapse.....

I've gotta say that I appreciate the breakdown. I've personally found that buyers are willing to pay back some of that premium when selling privately. Anyone who doesn't like that can also get some (though less) of the premium back when selling to their LCS. Additionally it's dramatically easier to sell 1/10 ounce gold privately than it is to sell one ounce coins in my experience. Thank you, very informative. I look forward to the follow up!

This video and all the work you put into it explains perfectly what I've been trying to tell people for years. I would never have had the patience to put this together so thank you for doing it. Also, I would never have thought to compare the luckiest fractional buyer to the unluckiest whole ounce buyer. That was brilliant. Since the likelihood that that scenario is going to play out for anyone is pretty close to zero we can discard it as a probability. But having worked it out as you did it shows people that even if all the stars are aligned with them the extra premium you pay on fractional coins isn't worth it.

    • @SilverHeist
      @SilverHeist  2 года назад

I borrowed the lucky vs unluckiest buyer idea from a stock advice video about buying steadily or buying brilliantly.
But in my head I thought there was a chance it made sense to buy steadily. Just in case the full oz guy bought at wrong time of year. But the numbers don’t work out.
But I did find out later that you can get “some” of your fractional premium back on sale. So that closes gap in a different way.

You forgot one thing. If you buy one 1oz coin vs ten 1/10oz coins the amount of gold is... different. 1oz coin ususaly has 31,11-31,15 g of pure gold while ten 1/10oz coins have aproximately 31,4-31,5 g pure gold. So if you buy it 10 years in the row you have 311,1-311,5 g vs 314-315 g. That means you have in fact 1/10 oz of pure gold more in one hundred 1/10 coins than in ten 1oz coins. I found it nice.

My goodness, those Gold Eagles are delightful. If all were perfect in the world, then I would purchase only 1 oz AGE’s, but patience is not my virtue, so I currently am on a 1/4 oz plan. Trying to fill one tube with 1/4 oz AGE’s in capsules (20 total). I do have a few 1 oz, a few 1/10 oz, and a 1/2 oz also. Once the 1/4 oz is full (4 short), then I will switch to the 1/10 oz tube, and finally the combination 1 and 1/2 oz tube. It’s definitely a long term goal, but ai will eventually achieve it. After that, it will be whatever is on fire sale at the time. I always try to not only save some money for the purchases, but to take full advantage of my credit card dollars to offset all the premiums.

My opinion, based on experience is that EVERYONE should have 10% of their net + debt in SILVER and 5% of their net + debt in gold. The gold in 1 ounce coins of your country(AGE 1oz or 1oz US Mint Buffalos in America for example), the silver, at least 1/2 in ASEs, the other 1/2 in 90%, .999 bars/rounds, etc etc). AFTER one has established this base, then go to the fun and fractional. Collector coins are speculative and to each his own on those but their collectible value should NOT be counted as part of your foundation. Lastly, considering that we truly seem to be entering a long term bull market for gold, I'd stack the 1/10th oz because they are a nice combination of wealth security AND speculation. Gold moves up $100 and an ounce may move up $110, while a 1/10th oz will enjoy that same $10 move, which translates into $200 per oz premium increase, vs the $110 for the oz. Sell 1/10ths privately, because the LCSs aren't going to want to pay you that extra premium that you deserve for buying high and running the risk. Lastly, it will serve one well to STOP thinking about gold/silver in "dollar" terms and understand that your true wealth is measured IN OUNCES, not "dollars", not equities, not crypto. Gold and silver are the ONLY real money on the earth. Everything else comes with counterparty risk and IF YOU DON'T HOLD IT(physical) YOU DON'T OWN IT.

@@SilverHeist All I can say is that I was buying the 1/10 for $140 when gold was $1250 and now w/ gold at $1900 they are worth $225(private sale). So in conclusion, I'm making an $850per ONE OZ increase w/ the 1/10's, where I would have only seen about $750 had I bought one oz at $1300(including premium) and sold it today for $2050. So I guess it's worth it. Thank you for proposing this question I'd never really thought about it deeply and I don't like to pay that premium on 1/10's but in the long run, I'd say that it is worth it. Thanx.

Usually the lowest produced and ence the most likely to have numismatic and premium value is the half ounce, followed by the quarter ounce. Tenth ounces and ounces by a large margin are produced at 60% on ounces, and about 24% on the tenth, Around 6% are halves and 10% are quarters.

@@silverhustlin1390 I have heard the same thing from several RUclipsrs. This is a case where it pays to know your lcs folks and to know what they’re willing to purchase. I’ll freely admit that many lcs guys won’t even make an offer on them or if they do, the offer will be well below spot. In my area, I can easily sell gold Sovereigns, any of the 20 franc gold coins and other foreign gold. I’ve established a great relationship with my lcs guys and many of my local stackers over several years, so I am able to easily sell foreign gold for over spot. The lesson here is to get to know the local folks that buy gold, but more importantly, find out what they will and will not buy before buying a lot of gold. My situation obviously isn’t the same as yours. Every lcs is different and selling peer to peer is always different. Granted, my situation is much more rare than most stackers, but it is what it is. The fact that I’ve been doing this in the same area for over 20 years gives me an advantage over most stackers. I’ve had plenty of time to really get to know my local guys.✌️

This is interesting research and thanks for making the video! However, this only pertains to gold eagles. If a person wants to buy fractional gold there are other coins that can be had for much lower premiums than the 1/10 ounce gold eagles. For instance, for the last 3 years I have been buying 20 gold coins from France, Belgium, and Switzerland. They can be had for about 8% above spot price which is about what the premium is for a 1 ounce gold eagle. The 1/10 ounce gold eagles are running at about 16% premium.

You have to factor in such a thing as liquidity in a dire economic situation. It will be much more convenient and safe to sell small amounts of gold from time to time to sustain your living during the period of high inflation, than to do the same with the large amounts. You definitely don't want to sell an ounce right now just to see, that the money you've received for it became twice cheaper in a course of a couple of days. You'll also not want to risk bringing a large amount of gold with you to some shady pawn shop or bank during such times. You'll have to go to shady ones to get at least somewhat decent price, as normally governments during economic hardships like to ban all private dealings in precious metals and then to establish atrociously low official purchase prices. I was a student during a period of hyperinflation in my country and I was a millionaire ;) 2,5 mln of my official student's subsistence allowance in the local currency were enough to buy a bottle of locally produced wine and two packs of cigarettes, so I know what I'm talking about :) I believe it's better to have both big and fractional coins, balancing the need to save more on purchase with the possibility to spend your savings in a convenient way in case of some serious socio-economic problems. And have some silver too - about 10 kg of mostly 87.5% silver kitchen utensils, accumulated over the years of the relative economic stability by my family with no intent to "hoard" or "stack" precious metals, helped me and my parents to survive during the worst time before the economic situation improved a bit and I got employed and started getting some stable income.

One argument for selling fractional gold in one once increments is: depending upon where you are and what your choices are to liquidate you may actually get paid more for the fractional than of liquidating a one ounce coin. The person buying realize that they can tack on a nice premium when they sell them. Of coarse I’m not saying every place would do this, I have seen it personally though, they were more willing to pay spot or a little more with fractional. Always call multiple places to see what they offer!

The premiums always remain on fractional gold and they are far more liquid too. Those are a couple of reasons the bulk of my gold stack is fractional. In fact I only have 3 coins that are an ounce or more. I appreciate your research on the data you showed.

Interesting video nicely done. Some ideas... At 4.30 comparing the unluckiest 1 oz buyer vs the luckiest tenth oz is sliiiiightly biased no? 😂
What about the luckiest 1 oz buyer? Although I see the point you're trying to make
Aside from the actual dollar cost I can see how for some they are still going to be better off buying fractional regular as it will actually keep them motivated and on track in the habit of buying gold rather than saving most of the year then blowing the money on something that came up or an impulse purchase for eg.
Also when it comes to sell I just don't see any 2nd hand market sales of fractional tenths getting the same prices as typical dealers so there's a bit of premium usually lost (and nearly all of it if selling to a dealer). I do love fractional gold but too expensive compared to bigger pieces aside from sovs here in the UK

    • @SilverHeist

I think you are better off going with fractionals if you are buying gold. First, not a lot of people can afford to buy the 1 oz. Gold is not cheap, it's expensive. Second, if you want to acquire gold fast fraxtionals are the best way to go about it. It's easier to liquidate fractionals when you sell. Some people say the 1 oz is better because of the lower premium but when you buy you are looking at the overall price + the premium and the overall price for fractionals is less than the 1 oz.

Buy 90% US Silver coins WHILE saving to buy 1 oz. Gold bullion coins; that way you have "fractional" coins (which don't have higher premiums like fractional
Gold coins) AND you're getting 1 oz. Gold coins which is the best value. This plan gives you the best balance and functionality. I have a lot of money, and
I buy 90% Silver at the same time I buy 1 oz. Gold Maples. I've bought 1,200 ozs. of 90% Silver and 24 -1 oz. Gold Maples in the last month, adding to

A subscriber and a thumbs up. Question. As many might justify with an excuse by saying - I will wait for the price of gold to drop and then buy - someone buying today but going back a few years with price drops how much or how bad might a price drop of gold actually be? Me, I can only relate fractional gold to be like going to a store and buying a snack or a chocolate bar and paying with a $ 100.00 bill.

      1) bought 2020
      2) bought 2019 and 2020
      3) bought 2018, 2019, 2020

Only downside to trying to save for one oz of gold is a lot of Americans suck at saving money. Especially that much. If you can buy an oz straight out then that's good. But most that can't do that are gonna go 1/10oz because once bought it can't be spent unless you go to a coin shop. And folks like me don't have a coin shop close to me so it works out perfect. Better than money in tha bank. Premium is crap on 1/10 yes, but an oz is an oz when you get ready to sell.
Anyways that is my two cents worth. Enjoy your break downs brother. Full view, sub, thumbs up brother. Cheers.

    • @Fatal_Error_Gaming
      @Fatal_Error_Gaming 23 дня назад

@@DrSchor it's the same logic if one tries to save for an ounce of gold, by the time the average person can save up for a whole ounce coin it has either went up or went down. And a lot of Average gold buyers are living in 30k to 60k a year. With the lucky ones making 100k. Throw in tha car note, mortgage, credit card bills, two children and they are lucky to be making 15k a year after expenses. So 2300 dollars is a lot. At one time.
I will say this, buying now probably doesn't make sense till gold goes back under 2000. But is it gonna go back below 2000? I don't see it doing that with the economy where it's at. If you can see it hitting 3000 dollars by 2025 the premium we pay for 1\10 oz right now will be gone. And inflation doesn't show any signs of letting up anytime soon.
But yeah, if ya can afford to save 2300 dollars for an Oz it's the best way. But as long as that cash is sitting in someone's house there will always be that itch to spend it on something.

Perhaps it's better to have 1/10th Gold coin now & buy one each month or every other month until you have 1oz total in gold coins than saving to buy one 1oz Gold coin after 1 year of saving. May not even be alive 1 year later to finally buy one 1oz coin. Maybe first time buyers should start with 1/10th gold coins and once all ten are in your hands, then proceed to buy one 1oz gold coin. Diversify to buy all other precious metals such as silver, platinum etc.

In my opinion do both. Everyone should be able to buy 4oz of gold every year. Buy a full ounce coin, 2 half ounce coins, 4 quarter ounce coins, and 10 one tenth ounce coins. Most should be able to spread that out through the year. Fractional should be easier and quicker to sell if needed. And if the spot price continues to rise as it has the last 20 years the higher premiums you have paid should be covered. Plus also factor in that if the spot price rises to 3000, 4000 plus you might not be able to sell those full ounce coins in a hurry if there is an urgent need for money.
