To be fair, they were in charge, made the decisions, made bad decisions, and got fired by the public as a result. What Reeves is suggesting is that a bunch of unelected people make her decisions for her and then they can blame the bureaucrats if it all goes wrong. I feel it's one of those things that sounds good on paper but in reality makes politicians less directly accountable and bureaucrats more powerful, and those bureaucrats can be influenced by outsiders much more because they're not under the same scrutiny that MP's are. Don't get me wrong, i'd rather Reeves in charge than any Tory, but I don't think this particular policy is a good idea - the level of scrutiny should be the house so i'd make that the ultimate arbiter and have it so that significant budget changes can't be made without the backing of the house; how to define significant is the tough part but the OBR should be an advisor only, and not an arbiter.

As I remember, she is something to do with the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the event that Johnson insisted must go ahead despite Covid tearing through Europe at the time, and right at the start of it really taking a grip in the U.K. And later it transpired that there was a big spike in covid cases in and around Cheltenham, and it was because Johnson encouraged thousands of people to gather and mix. So not only did she waste a small fortune on a useless track and trace fiasco, she also made a small fortune at the expense of the clientele of her horse racing event, with Johnson’s blessing of course.

Yesterday the Chancellor conjured a £20 billion fiscal black hole as expected. She did so to justify evading her promises and hiking your taxes. Tax hikes that Labour refused to admit to during the general election. Labour claim the challenges they've highlighted are ones they weren't aware of before. Despite the OBR making critical information publicly available. Despite Labour, as the then-opposition party, having privileged access to Treasury civil servants. The Chancellor expects you to believe she knew about none of this until a few weeks ago. It just doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. Those impacted by yesterday's announcements, on Winter Fuel, scrapped education reforms and cancelled transport projects deserve better. As do those bracing for tax hikes in October, which are surely coming.

She did so to justify evading her promises and hiking your taxes.
Tax hikes that Labour refused to admit to during the general election.
Labour claim the challenges they've highlighted are ones they weren't aware of before.
Despite the OBR making critical information publicly available.
Despite Labour, as the then-opposition party, having privileged access to Treasury civil servants.
The Chancellor expects you to believe she knew about none of this until a few weeks ago.
It just doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.
Those impacted by yesterday's announcements, on Winter Fuel, scrapped education reforms and cancelled transport projects deserve better.
As do those bracing for tax hikes in October, which are surely coming.
Far more than invisible money is owed to the British people…
