Mobile Fighter G Gundam is the best. It's got all the good fighting, the Shining Gundam is the coolest gundam until it gets upgraded to the Burning Gundam which is even more amazing! It's considered the dark horse of the Gundam franchise, but that's purely because it goes off the playbook in terms of political plotlines. G Gundam isn't about politics, its about Gundams doing the fighting and doing it well. And sometimes, or even most of the time, when I'm sitting down to watch Gundam, I'm there because I want to see some giant humanoid mechs battle it out. And that's what G Gundam is all about.

i started my gundam journey with wing back in the early 2000s, from seed to 00, zeta to unicorn, ive been through it all and have been building for 15 years. but g gundam will always be my favourite. major thanks to giving this series the spotlight it deserves.

I love G Gundam, I actually own the Burning Gundam Action Figure. I watched Gundam Wing and was lost on what was going on, but it’s as you stated G Gundam is easy to understand.

Yeah this review was spoken from the perspective of a non mecha anime fan, it was the first non UC Gundam to break the mold and allow something awful like SEED to exist, as for the not "deep" comment, there's definitely some under the surface easy to miss themes.
Maybe this is purely an American POV of Gundam. In SouthEast Asia, G Gundam was quite popular in the late ninties to early 2000s. Little kids mixed in the Shining finger with wrestling (WWE was big here) during their play fighting.

G Gundam is a direct reference to kung fu movies especially stories written by the legendary Jin Yong. Master Asia's name, Tohou Fuhai is straight up the most famous and powerful antagonist in Jin Yong's "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer". Shining and God Finger is a reference to the "Buddha's Palm" series of techniques, Dragon Gundam is a reference to the "18 Palms of the Soaring Dragon", even the ultimate technique Sekiha Tenkyoken is named after the protagonist of "Ode to Gallantry". So yea a lot of the show goes over people's heads if they don't know the references.

G Gundam is one of the greatest Gundam to come out of the franchise. To blend the shonen genre aspects with the Gundam aesthetic is truly incredible.

G Gundam was my first Gundam and it kind of made the others hard to watch. It's a fun watch. It's almost the complete antithesis to something like Evangelion, which I also love. I usually explain it like this, standard Gundam is a political war drama, the focus is on the grand scale of the events. G Gundam is an action show, the focus is on the individual characters and their trials and growth. That's why the characters in G are so much more memorable and fleshed out.

Unironically though, it arguably is the most well-directed Gundam, episode to episode. And it doesn't lack political intrigue or drama either. Don't let the cool fights fool you, the plot and characters are quite involved and quite engaging.

Favorite moment is at the end when Domon fights Master Asia and goes to punch him. Master Asia thinks he reads it and dodges only to be surprised that Domon lands the punch. So epic. Such an underrated series. Its corny and cheesy and really dumb in some parts but it still has its charm and those awesome moments.
Also loved how it had a realistic control system. In all the other Gundam series they somehow do all these ninja moves and acrobatics with just joysticks and pedals...
I recently re-watched G Gundam again, the first time since I originally saw it on toonami back in the day and let me tell you, its charm and watchability runs deep, despite some of the ridiculous and over the top elements. I think it is one of the best Gundams and in many aspects it is the best, its just a wildly entertaining shonen gundam mech kung fu romp of a show and I love it.
G was the only Gundam i ever watched in its entirety when it was on Toonami. I have been considering rewatching it because i remember LOVING it. This was the push I needed.

Yeah the first Gundam I got into was Gundam wing, tanks to toonami. When this came out on it I gave it a shot and loved it as well!! I think this series holds up better than wing does.

Keep in mind that in context, G Gundam is a Wuxia-styled Gundam movie. You've got the hero on a quest for revenge, a bunch of dudes he fights and then befriends, a lost brother, and the old master who is also Dongfang Bubai.

From what I've read, the mech designs were so all over the place because they wanted to make it REALLY hard for models to be designed, which I find hilarious xD

Fun fact: It's called G Gundam because in Japan, it's known as Gundam Gaiden, which essentially translates to "Gundam of another universe, IE: It takes place in a parallel Earth dimension." Or, as I like to call it: Gundam Ball Z!

I have ALWAYS said this! G Gundam was easy to follow, had AMAZING fight scenes, and an action packed, Heartfelt moment in the end! No other Gundam series even comes close in my opinion! They are good but G Gundam was motivational! The others are all depressing.

I love G Gundam (and Mecha in general) with all my burning soul and it's very cool that despite its declining popularity, especially with younger anime fans you guys are still willing to gush about it. This was the first Gundam series that I watched and completed and I love it to bits. I couldn't get into watching the later ones like Unicorn or Iron Blooded Orphans.
I just realized what G Gundam is and its Zoids but for Gundam and that instantly made my opinion of it do a 180

Funny how G Gundam is kinda overlooked when it saved the franchise in Japan. Right around Gundams 15th Anniversary, the series helped revitalize the series by making it a super robot series in the spirit of Mazinger and Getter Robo. Thanks to the series success, Gundam Wing would follow up with it( you can even see Wing Gundam in the last 2 episodes of G !!!)
The biggest plot twist in G Gundam is when Mike finally revealed his most favorite Gundam.

Domon had me crying a lot. So much great emotion before he finished a bot
During an interview at Georgia State University in 2002 the series director Yasuhiro Imagawa talked about how much he hated the designs for the nations' Gundams. He purposely made ridiculously complex designs as the series went on to spite the sponsors that came up with the original suite of stereotypical designs. Also a lot of staff backed out of the project since they didn't want to abandon the soul of Gundam for a cash grab.
You make an assertion that the staff had creative freedom, but they didn't. They had Bandai telling them to make a shounen action show using a bunch of tasteless stereotypes as monster of the week fluff because the franchise was bleeding money after the back to back under performance of F91 and Victory.

I would say that this succeeded because they wanted to make something good despite the limitations placed on them. You can tell that even though they were being told what to do by the sponsors, they still had passion in making the best product possible. This is a great story about fighting the odds to make a product that your proud of.
I mean even if this was made under pressure from upper management I see way more passion, love and care in G then I do in the stale, tired self sabotaged mess that Victory ended up being
@@thomasffrench3639 While they did manage to make one of the best entries in the franchise, they, the general staff, had to be convinced that it was worth it. You're missing the point, if someone claims that G's staff had creative freedom is answer is a resounding, "they didn't." If they didn't frame the narrative the way they did, with a focus on honorable combat sports and the dreams of fighters contending with capital turning it into blood sport, G wouldn't have been very good. Having one option for telling a good story isn't exactly what I would call creative freedom. Plus, a bunch of the people that worked on G, such as character designer Hiroshi Osaka and now legendary key animator Yutaka Nakamura, still ended up leaving Sunrise in the late 90s to form Bones due to a lack of creative freedom.
This was a really fascinating lecture, and thank you for sharing it. this may be an old comment, but its rare that we get to see a creative get this specific and share this many details, especially from overseas.
However, I do think it's worth acknowledging what the text goes on to say:
"The designs he thought terrible, especially the "samurai" Gundam, looked incredible as models. The older generation of animators and directors had created "a box" for themselves in seeing Gundam as only a military license. On the other hand, many young kids were now being introduced to the world of Gundam through G Gundam. From this, Imagawa-san learned that anime creation was not always a competition between sponsors and creators. In anime, there was room for both groups to work together."
It's sad to think then, that every installment in the franchise since has refused to stray too far from this "box". Except, ironically, for the ones tomino himself helmed; Turn A Gundam especially.
That said, i'd love to see the original designs imagawa made for G Gundam.
The cinematography in this one is ingenious and it is a huge factor why G Gundam works so well.

So in case people didn’t know, some of the English voice actors actually got their beginner roles in this show. A few of the cast members, mainly Robert Scott Henrickson, Mark Gatha, and Matthew Erickson voiced characters in the show that pathed way for their voice acting career explosions. Mark Gatha who voices Domon Kasshu in G Gundam also voiced Irvin in Zoids Chaotic Century, Matthew Erickson voiced Van, and Robert Scott Henrickson voiced Raven

Yeah G Gundam was the only Gundam series I was able to get into when I was younger and even now. It was like DB but with mechs.
G Gundam was all about the characters. No political themes, no intricate plot, just a bunch of wonderful, complex characters who undergo a wonderful “hero’s journey”. The emotional payoff at the end is huge

I don't think it's "racist". Pretty sure if countries could develop gundams and run this scenario IRL, they'd more than likely design gundams/a lot of stuff to represent their country/colony's individual culture. After all, they're battling for control and each nation seems insanely self-serving and proud. This is absolutely the BEST Gundam, it's weird that G Gundam seems swept under the rug by Bandai.
