    Fun fact, the Nether Gundam (windmill) was made as a joke. The shows director in an interview said it was drawn as a joke and the crew thought it was so funny they added it into the show. He said that sometimes they'd make the most outlandish Gundams simply to mess with Bandai as they kept getting notes from the toy company asking for specific stuff to be added in for toys and models, the crew said "let's see if they can make a model out of this!"

    From a Hong Konger perspective, G Gundam always remains a special place in my heart. Since the director of G Gundam loves the Kung Fu fighting films directed by Tsui Hark. Hence most antagonists in Hong Kong arc are named from Tsui Hark's film, such as Heaven's Sword (天劍絕刀), Grand Gundam ( 獅王爭霸)and Walter Gundam (笑傲江湖)
    Even the set scenes reminds us of former glory of Hong Kong as well, the floating restaurants and Victoria Harbour........which brings Hong Kongers in sentimental state that those are eroding by time and governing .......

    • @MoonAnime
      @MoonAnime 2 года назад +1

      @@devilbringer1102 Yeah it's interesting that the reaction of those designs coming from newer fans are leaning slightly on being malicious. I suppose 'progressiveness' is showing its progression in a way, but I wish people don't cling on it too hard by criticizing it using our current standards.
      It was way harder to connect with other parts of the world back then, and ultimately I don't sense any ill-will through those designs. Everyone got their highlights, and the final message is clear. A limited way to deliver representations, but they are representations no less.

    I initially skipped F91 and Victory so I didn't know how badly Gundam needed a change of pace to save itself. It is a miracle that G Gundam came out as best as it did, as Yasuhiro Imagawa, the director of this series, had to deal with corporate wishes and infused his own love for martial arts and gave the show so much of its own identity. Unbridled stupidity and a ton of heart give this show a really great palette cleanser from the depresso espresso UC timeline. It's still the most original and one of the best AUs for me personally. Shining Finger theme is iconic, and it's just a blast seeing Gundam be so different on the surface, but oddly still very Gundam under the veneer (even the ending is somewhat sad knowing the Gundam Fight continues on and the Earth continues to be sullied).

    The formulaic nature of the early fights does something I think is kinda important; it sets up plot without making the fight TOO exciting and causing people to miss it. The dialogue of the fights gets more interesting than the fight itself, often times. It also sets up the potential of the fighters for later on in the series, sacrificing a little hype now to achieve greater hype later.

      @@Yurihyuga766 sorry, but the Dark Gundam isn't really like Majin Buu at all. Even the creation of these two entities is completely different. Not counting the retcon that Akira Toriyama made with Majin Buu because it is just another example of Toriyama contradicting himself, Majin Buu was created to be evil, while the ultimate gundam was created for good but ultimately corrupted into evil. The self recovery of the Dark Gundam doesn't even compare to Buu's, even when the Dark Gundam is at its peak. Even their absorptions and evolutions are completely different. The Dark Gundam's evolution was by design and was corrupted, while Buu doesn't really physically evolve, it's pure absorption or reversal of absorption. The Dark Gundam doesn't really absorb anything other than the dark army it created to protect itself and for food. My point is that the Dark Gundam and Majin Buu are vastly different, and any similaraties are few and completely coincidental. I honestly wouldn't call the Dark Gundam the Gundam version of Majin Buu. They really are nothing alike, especially in character development.

    Thank you for doing a retrospective of my favorite Gundam series of all time Mobile Fighter G Gundam. I really liked this series because it has a great combination of action and suspense that leaves you on the edge of your seat. I also love the characters including antagonists like Master Asia as all of them get a chance to shine without crowding each other. It also have the best love story between Domon and Rain even though it had both of the do the cheesy power of love version of Shining Finger, but its fun to watch the two of them grow closer of the course of the series. This is a show that has a lot of heart and it is not afraid to wear it on its sleeve.
    I'm currently rewatching G Gundam(ep. 30) for the third time with subs although it is not as memorable as the English dub version I still enjoy it.

How many universes would Master Asia solo? Would putting him in the ZERO system give him Ultra Instinct 🤔, the world may never know.

    The "bias" you talk about is how I feel about Gundam Seed Destiny. I never had cable and missed a lot of Wing and G-Gundam. So my main introduction to Gundam was the 5 volume Gundam Seed adaption (I know...weird) and didn't watch a full Gundam series until Gundam Seed Destiny came out in 4-5 DVD chunks. I recgonize the flaws in GSD (although I would argue the remaster does a lot to help both Seed and Destiny) and the missteps..but dang, I still enjoy it even after watching every Gundam series and falling in love with other series. What can you do? Nostalgia man...
    Also my god, the final 10 episodes of G-Gundam are incredible. Especially the twist in the third act of the series. Great retrospective!

  • @Ferenczys

    Thanks for the great recap. G holds a special place in my heart as my absolute favorite Gundam show too, and it's so much fun seeing people's reactions to it when I set it in front of them.
    That said, I think it's over the top aesthetic leads many to misunderstand it, at least on first viewing. Of all the alternate universe stories, G is by far the *MOST* faithful to the core themes of the original Gundam, and it's director, Yasuhiro Imagawa, was hand picked by Tomino to direct the show, as he worked with Tomino on 0079.
    G translates the ideas of 0079 quite faithfully, but with its own spin. The key notion of Gundam--that war is bad and always leads to mass catastrophe--is on full display with the effects seen of the Gundam Fight on Earth. In place of Newtypes, G's Gundam Fighters are similarly superhuman and also come to deep understanding of each other, only through fists and combat rather than Newtype space magic. And in the end, it's not any greater power that achieves lasting victory, but the love and compassion of two people allowing them to finally bridge a massive emotional divide.
    G might look ridiculous--hell, it celebrates being ridiculous!--but it's 100% Gundam in its DNA.
    One minor quibble about the video: in the US, Gundam Wing debuted before G Gubdam on Toonami. Quite a few people experienced massive whiplash when it debuted, as they were expecting something more like Wing and were unprepared for the shameless bombast of the series.

  • @ChouRaiyuki
    @ChouRaiyuki 10 месяцев назад +1

    Worth saying the dub is actually quite good especially for the period. Aside from the censorship, odd name changes, and a few minor instances the translation itself is overwhelmingly spot on (sometimes even too accurate) and generally gets MORE accurate as the show goes on (see the Shining Finger catchphrase right after the Shinjuku ark being completely correct as opposed to the more well known one up to then).
    It's definitely an oddball series in its franchise; it does take enough elements imo that do make it still work as one as the whole idea of humans going into space and the consequences fighting leaves on the Earth are pretty on theme as are some of the intranational politics even if they're generally slight and surface level compared to classic Gundam having it be much more forfront. Along with how you have essentially two Char clones in both Master Asia being sort of CCA Char and Shwarz having a mask and vaguely similar to Zeta's Quatro it really was "Imagawa's Gundam" in the end and imo it worked.
    One of my favorite aspects is that when you get down to it aside from Wong every major antagonist is ultimately from Neo Japan, the very nation Domon is supposed to represent; the Devil Gundam, Ulube, and Dr. Mikamura are all from there (and in the prequel manga it turns out that Master Asia is as well though that has no bearing to the viewing experience proper; just a fun fact). I liked that the series really plays with sides in that way with every nation being an enemy but slowly more and more becoming allies and then fully flipping the script in the end game. The Devil Gundam as an antagonist as well makes it even more of an oddball series as well because even though it's this machine that doesn't really talk and seems like a tool used by others it still has a goal in "mind" and it's own way of doing things that's subtle and unusual.
    It's my personal favorite series as well and I actually can't remember if I saw it first or Wing first (at least where I live I'm pretty sure Wing was the first to air followed by G and then SD and the original in some order after G.) But it really does leave such a good impression on me with its music, it's vibrant characters, and of course it's action and the unappologetic ridiculousness (hitting a building into the sky will ALWAYS be raw).

    I also wasn’t old enough to grasp the whole “different/alternate universes” concept for the shows so I was confused as hell going from something like Wing (that actually had a Gundam with damn feathered Angel wings at one point in endless waltz), to the more grounded 08th MS Team (my favorite back then by far), and then G Gundam (at this point I just gave up on how the hell the shows/source material tied together - not realizing they aren’t supposed to lol).

    Oh G Gundam, as a stand alone anime its pretty good. As a Gundam series, that's a bit more complicated. As somebody who started watching Gundam series relatively recently in preparation for Super Robot Wars V, X and T I've so far seen the original Gundam, Zeta, Char's Counterattack, F91, G, Wing and Unicorn and out of those I'd put G Gundam around 4th place behind Unicorn as 1st, OG Gundam at 2nd and Zeta at 3rd. Anyway, I've heard quite a bit that G Gundam is a polarizing entry due it basically being a Super Robot show in Gundam's clothing. But I would argue, what's wrong with that? Let's compare the Gundam franchise to the filmography of Adam Sandler, where as Sandler spends most of his time making dumb comedies with a few decent serious films like Uncut Gems; G Gundam is the Uncut Gems of Gundam, an over the top, nonsensical OP bullshit fest in a franchise that is often well known for its "war is hell" melodrama. Oh and there's also the fact Gundam could very well have ended with this series if it didn't make bank, which it did. It was basically the one two punch of G Gundam's toy sales and the international broadcasting of Wing right at the hight of popularity for N-Sync and the Backstreet Boys that helped save the franchise after Victory Gundam shat the bed. Though Speaking of Gundams most of the ones outside of the Shuffle Alliance are kind of dumb let's be honest. Personal pick for most hilarious one is the Windmill Gundam. My pick for most facepalm worthy is of course the Zebra Gundam. Oh and of course we can't forget about Master Asia, just watch this show for him alone. Especially the dub because he sounds like Sigma from Mega Man X if he smoked an entire Marlboro factory (mostly due the fact that Master Asia's VA played Sigma in Megaman Maverick Hunter X. Oh and yes I know that Domon's VA also played X in that game and X8.) But overall I do like G Gundam as well as some other Gundam series. Honestly here's how I'd recommend this show. If you know someone who hates Gundam but loves Shonen anime, you can probably recommend them G Gundam. Kind of how I like The Last Jedi even though I don't like Star Wars.

    • @Evilriku13
      @Evilriku13 2 года назад +3

      ah someone knowing that Domon and Master Asia fought each other in a game unrelated to the gundam universe.
      EDIT: If you like THe Last Jedi (or the concepts of it despite the execution) then I highly recommend Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2 which dives WAY deeper into the materia then what the movies ever did, explaining the dark & light side motives in a philsophical way and what the "true enemy" of the franchise is overall. In fact The Last Jedi was trying too hard to be like KOTOR2 without knowing what it did right.
      If you don't wanna play KOTOR2 for whatever reason, I would recommend watching "Kreia - a critical analysis of Star Wars", it's truely worth the time being put into it, and maybe you learn something for real life too :)

    This series is an oddball entry, but it is entertaining as crazy over the top action series that does have a few interesting curveballs to it. If I were to comment on the stuff that holds it back, it's that it sometimes chickens out of killing characters. It felt like Master Asia was supposed to die when Domon first used the Burning Gundam, then the people working on the show realized it would be a mistake to kill him off so easily. It looked like Domon's friends died in the lead up to the fight with Master Asia, then they turn up with no real injuries so I don't get what the point of saying they were dead was.
    Still it when it does the feels right it does it right. The series does deal with the character suffering from the emotional trauma from their encounter with the Devil Gundam instead of brushing off the implications of what they went through. For individual episodes, I love the one where Chibodee is dealing with the evil clown and his mechanics help him through it, then he kicks that clown's ass. That was super cathartic and the dub had a great change when it switched out the song from the Japanese version for America the Beautiful.
    The Devil Gundam itself is a memorable villain with how its machine that corrupts all it touches. We get that it's capable of thinking but by and large it is a cold unfeeling machine that will not stop until every human is dead or turned into its mechanical slaves.

    Having recently finished it, G Gundam is a series that I can both love and roll my eyes at. There are little snippets of brilliance all over the show, but there's also SO. MUCH. REPETITION.
    It's all over the place in terms of tone, often trying to be serious and melodramatic but coming off as completely nonsensical. Master Asia provides so much of this, with his techniques involving things like mini-gundams, a giant energy palm, and turning into a tornado with his face on it. I'm all for the silly and weird Gundam designs, but he genuinely breaks my immersion.
    The other thing that breaks my immersion is that the show doesn't seem to take its own setting seriously. There's no judge for any of these *very important* international battles (before the finals), and two previously disqualified fighters are allowed to participate in the finals. Wong gives weak excuses about not being able to discuss other nations' affairs, but he's the one hosting the tournament and thus in violation of an international agreement. The moment this happened, every other nation should have declared the Gundam Fight illegitimate and nullified Neo Hong Kong's sovereignty.
    There are smaller examples of this happening all over: Neo Nepal gets away with assassination attempts in broad daylight while destroying public transportation, and Wong at one point has the building he's in explode, with no one in the city acknowledging that *the prime minister is missing and might be dead* even the day after.
    This isn't even getting into how poorly explained and inconsistent the Devil Gundam's abilities are.
    However, the show does prove that German ninjas are the best in the world.
