My favorite Gundam series. I love that it feels like it is not that far removed from our time now, especially with how basic the Human Reform League mobile suits were in the beginning. The FLAGs look like something Lockheed Martin would build if mechs were a real thing. It starts so grounded. It evolves into more Gundam norms later but they make the progression believable.

The fact that the show actually addresses it twice in Season 2 is just brilliant, in my opinion. The first time is when he implies that he's earned the nickname "The Immortal Colasour" after surviving countless encounters with the Gundams in Season 1. The second time is when Kati outright prohibits Patrick from sortieing, stating outright that she's counting on his immortality to keep them alive through the final battle against Celestial Being.

    • @MrBlueBurd0451
      @MrBlueBurd0451 Год назад +29

It's even better because despite being a very meme line, it carries incredibly deep meaning. Setsuna sees Gundams (And Exia/00 in particular) as the embodiment of the future of mankind. An avatar or herald of times yet to come, where everyone can live together not without strife, perhaps, but at least without violent conflict. A humanity together, reaching for the stars. And he wishes to be such an avatar himself. To be one of the things/beings/entities that creates such a future. That is why he sees himself (and his fellow Meisters) as fundamentally indivisible from the Gundams they pilot.

@theweedeater1842 to be fair, most of gundam portrays the gundams as ultimately negative for the world they inhabit. The gundams have consistently been the vehicle in which the writers drive dark concepts like loss of innocence, forced maturity, the consequences of WMDs, and the inevitable arms race that comes with building bigger/stronger weapons of war. WFM is just extremely direct about the dehumanizing nature of the military industrial complex.

Remember this line from Aeolia Schenberg's speech in episode 1: "The Dialogues to Come" and the "ship from Jupiter" that the Union professor found out coz those two factoids will come up again all the way to the movie. Also don't skip the Lockon's/Neil's cemetery scene coz it established that Neil has a twin brother (😏). All those setups really shows that the writers of Gundam 00 really had a great overarching plan for their saga from beginning to end.
Also, it's kinda creepy how Gundam 00 with the KPSA terrorist organization that Setsuna once a member of have pockets around the world and managed to do some big attacks on Europe (killing Lockon/Neil's family in one of them) kinda predicted the rise of ISIS/ISIL, a terrorist organization that was worse than Al Qaeda and was able to have pockets around the world through their "remote teachings" and managed to do sporadic attacks around the world too, not unlike the ones that killed Lockon's family. Gundam 00 can be too real sometimes 😮

I may rewatch it someday just to catch up, but it's a solid series and deserves more love. Since you mentioned Tieria, one thing I DO recall is how uppity he was. The dude only talked about four things: Aeolia Schenberg, Veda, Innovators, Innovades. Let me preface this by saying 00 is one of my favorites and was my first gundam. Thing is it's beautiful, but the character designs are very polarizing in that way that anime has tried to move away from. The mobile suits are really awesome, but many of the non gundam suits look like armored cores and not mobile suits, and even the gundams themselves are one design with a few tweaks. The show is really deep and willing to dive deep into certain topics other shows wouldn't but it lays a lot of itself on THICK. Gundam 00 is polarizing because if it works for you it really works for you, but if it doesn't every strength has an easy flaw to nit pick at.

Not only the best Gundam series but honestly one of the best pieces of sci-fi ever. It tackles the same problems as previous Gundam shows but also combines them with larger societal and existential questions you usually only see in older sci-fi like the works of Asimov, Clarke, etc.
The characters are also fully fleshed out and feel like real people with past, motivations, dreams, actual personalities they follow. Which is a contrast especially to Gundam Seed, where characters are just thrown around by the plot.
It also does the whole _audience surrogate_ right, in a way where the character never feels invasive or stuck, he is actually part of the story and allowed to literally grow with it.
The whole setting also feels very realistic, as transition to renewable energy is already happening and there's a big chance it'll turn the tables on countries that have historically relied on oil for their economies, risking whole regions like the middle east to spiral into countless civil wars.
    .
    .
    .
Lastly (and this is a bit of a spoiler for those who haven't watched the movie, which is the always intented end of this story. So if you haven't, you should, Gundam 00 was building towards that movie from the very beginning), it has one of the best depiction of silicon-based life to ever appear in any work, be that a movie, book, animation, you name it. It's very rare for aliens to truly feel _alien_ like that. It also pairs well with the whole newtype thing because crystalline life forms would need a different way of communication.
At the end of the day, Gundam 00 is not only Gundam at its finest but if you switch the mechs for tanks, spaceships, missiles, etc, it's not different from any sci-fi classic or revered war movie.
And always remember: Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.

The Gundams being uniquely powerful advanced machines that utterly crush all opposition and the consequences to the political schemers of the world it's set in. The whole large scale schemes within schemes and factional infighting thing done better, and the philosophical argument being made delivered with more skill and a deeper understanding. (Even counting Endless Waltz) Heck, even the theme of 'the pilots are pawns until they decide to make their own way' is executed better here than in Wing. There's a laundry list of reasons why, from the smaller scale thanks to not having space colonies in the mix, to the avoidance of melodrama and giving the government forces more character and time to shine on screen. But at the end of the day, that's been my take on 00. That while Seed was essentially 'What if we did 0079 today?' 00 was 'What if we played Gundam Wing's themes and motifs seriously?'

Here we are, Gundam OO, currently my favorite Gundam series. The mobile suits are top tier with the non Celestial Being Mobile suits looking cool yet anachronistic in their own ways compared to the Gundams which look and perform like they came from the future and just crushed them at nearly every encounter. At least until Corner sold the Pseudo Solar Drives to the three major powers where the new GNX's clapped Celestial Being's cheeks. Of the Season 1 Gundams I think I love the Virtue since BIG GUN!!! The Characters are compelling in their own ways with Setsuna, well definitely having the most legit reason to be edgy of any Gundam Protagonist, I mean, jeez. At first I was like "why are we here?" whenever we cut to Saji and Louise doing their schtick. But then Louise's family was killed by that psychopath Nina FOR LITERALLY NO REASON OTHER THAN SHE WAS LIKE "oh those assholes are looking too happy I don't like that one bit!" And afterwords Saji and Louise, season 1 had them shoved feet first into a meat grinder to say nothing of what they, especially Louise get put through in season 2. Back to Nina, she was so petty and demonic it made Dio Brando blush. Hell Team Trinity was a gang of rabid animals and seeing Johann and Michael get gunned down like thugs was so sweet. But speaking of, Ali Al-Saachez stole the show for me as my current favorite villain in Gundam. Not only is he like Yazan from Zeta on crack but the dude is just such a piece of garbage you can't help but be transfixed on him wondering how far he's gonna go. Besides, he's played in English by Scott McNeil, you can't go wrong with Scott McNeil. So yeah Season 1 was crazy and now to see Season 2 and the consequences of Celestial Being's armed interventions.

While there are some Gundam entries that I absolutely love to the point of ranking them among other non-Gundam anime in terms of enjoyment (like Re-Rise and G), and others that can go screw a wood chipper (like Seed), 00 is at neither of those extremes. In fact, most Gundam entries, even / especially beloved ones, usually there's sadly a point at which the series loses me. Even entries like Unicorn, 08th MS team, Iron-Blooded Orphans, and even the brand new Witch From Mercury find ways to lose me by the end. If not for the existence of G and the Build entries, I'd say that Gundam probably isn't for me. And 00 is one of the odder examples as to why because there _is_ so much to like, while not _too much_ to distract.
I don't think this is a spoiler because it gets revealed with the advent of Trans Am, but it bugs me that Celestial Being (barring the Thrones and other subversives) is 100% completely and unambiguously revealed to be in the right, which is weird because you wouldn't _think_ that's where 00 is going from the start. Gundam logic would dictate that anybody who tries to impose peace through force is generally in the wrong, even if their heart might be in the right place. (And if _that_ doesn't sum up America's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan...) Perhaps Celestial Being _were_ diverting from Aeolia Schenberg's goal (or _maybe_ the two-hundred-year-old pre-recorded message actually _failed_ to immaculately predict the future... just saying), but hostile factions like Ali al Saachez endangered the world and forced CB's otherwise extremist hand, and thus human predilections to violence and chaos basically force CB into a role as a neutral peacekeeper. Instead... aliens. (Whom, spoilers, were _also_ absolved from all the destruction and death they caused because they were literally too stupid to realize what they were doing. Um... no. A+ for creative alien species design. F for ethics and see me after class.)
Speaking of bizarre stances on pacifism, Marina Ismail can sit on a lit beam saber because she is _exactly_ like Relena Peacecraft in terms of sanctimonious obnoxiousness. Playing the piano while all the little kids sing to stop Setsuna from turning Ali into pork rinds was heavy-handed, unsatisfying, and stupid. I almost expected Setsuna to chew Marina out for pulling that stunt, not ask for an encore. IMHO, Marina is only outdone by Lacus Clyne in sheer awfulness (with Relena herself escaping by the skin of her teeth mostly due to being unintentionally hilarious) due to Seed's nasty predilection for expecting you to sympathize with characters it doesn't give a damn to actually characterize... while expecting you to _not_ sympathize with the one character they _did_ characterize as exceptionally tragic, possibly by accident. Time and time again, Gundam keeps trying this archetype, but all of them suck cinderblocks through a sieve, to the point where it's almost _refreshing_ that WFM's Chuchu will lay a [w]itch out. The only one that I thought kinda' had a leg to stand on was Kudelia, but... well, I'll let you get to _Iron-Blooded Orphans._

Gundam 00 is perhaps the greatest non-UC Gundam series ever made and my personal top favorite Gundam series alongside Turn A and Zeta. There are numerous stand-out aspects of the show, including but not limited to Setsuna being the "best Gundam" (well, aside from Gundam NT's Rita Bernal, that is), GN-001 Gundam Exia being the "best girl", Sumeragi being one of the best female captains in the series, the Immortal Colasour existing to make fun of Kira's plot-armor moments, interesting cast of characters, cool mobile suit designs, kickass musics, etc.
I'd say Gundam 00 is the best starting point for newcomers who are interested on getting into Gundam series but found the entire UC series to be a bit too long for their taste (from 0079/The Origin all the way to Victory or G-Reco). Although I'd recommend Gundam X as well because of its bigger similarities to UC.

I remember watching Gundam Seed and hating it, to the degree I was about ready to ditch gundam as a franchise. Then this came out, watched it, and... It was actually pretty solid. There is no Jesus-kun who constantly does things I hate while everyone worships him (like sleep with his alleged best friend's fiance and then, when his best friend goes "okay but why", he pushes said friend down a flight of stairs and yells at him for daring to complain). It was just a bunch of flawed people that felt remarkably human, with a setup I understood, with reasoning I could understand. The tech was fun (even if it is silly that Celestial Being is so ludicrously far ahead tech-wise compared to everyone else), and... Yeah, good show. Season 2 isn't as good as 1 was, but still better than Seed imo.

Your problem with Seed is that you wanted to pretend Seed was just a retelling of 0079 without taking account the much much more realistic conflict based on clones and genetic splicing that changes everything.

@@westonmeyer3110 Actually Seed was my second gundam (wing my first, but I was so young when I saw it that it barely parsed). I didn't even know about 0079, let alone watched it, until years later. I actually only watched UC gundams for the first time this year, with 0079 specifically being in January. So your first assumption is wrong.
Your second assumption was my issue with Seed, which was actually shoddy character writing, shoddy plot, shoddy world building, overly flashy combat scenes (I prefer slower, heavier combat over a series of lasers shooting out to kill everything in a 5 km radius), and a few other issues. My issue was not the setup, that was actually fine. It was entirely execution-based. Not to say Seed was all bad, it has one of my favourite characters in Gundam as a whole in it (Mu La Flaga), but... Yeah it was not a good series.
I'm actually confused about how I brought up one of my biggest annoyances with Seed (how Kira is treated as literal perfection and always morally perfect despite constantly doing things that he shouldn't), yet you just appear to have missed that entirely.
If you are curious (you aren't and probably won't read this far), my actual biggest issue with Seed is the lost potential, especially after watching 0079 (which I didn't like). It was a retreading of 0079, but could have fixed a lot of the issues of that series. Instead it actually made things worse (please explain to me how Kira could fend off 4 other gundams piloted by aces in his second time ever in a mech of any kind).
tl;dr my issue with seed was basically everything except what you thought it was, and I watched it b4 anything UC.

    • @westonmeyer3110
      @westonmeyer3110 Год назад +1

      @@uberpinkwarrior
Kira’s perfection is completely related to the plot and setting and conflict of Seed, there is literally nothing wrong with how his character was written regardless of how naive he looks or how annoyingly overpowered he is. His parents unknowingly created basically the perfect human through gene splicing, not only is he stronger and smarter than any coordinator but he is also extremely compassionate through his stronger will so he protects the weak at the expense of the strong to prevent the coordinators(the strong) from ultimate victory to create a lifelong stalemate(although his stronger will power also leads to him believing he is ending the conflict rather than simply delaying it and that is his flaw).
Seed’s story is beyond brilliant, you have an extremely realistic if not completely real world based problem with realistic factions that form the protagonists and antagonists of the story and generally great plot progression thanks to the application of ideas from 0079, and even Seed Destiny generally conveys the future created by Kira’s actions very well despite the reused assets and behind the scenes issues.
While you might not have seen 0079 until recently you most likely have watched countless mecha and non mecha animes that have been influenced by it and have listened to critics who have been influenced by it. There are annoying parts of Seed that didn’t need to be there and some good aspects of Seed that could have been done better but Seed as a concept is far better than 00 could ever be. 00 is basically what it would be like if 5 Relena Peacecrafts piloted Gundams and also ran the facility that built the Gundams, it’s almost a horrible anime show nevermind a good Gundam series or better than Seed.
Seed is very much a good series though and I say this as someone who has watched basically every Gundam series through my life and as someone who didn’t like Seed as much when it was originally airing but I have since rewatched it and all other Gundam shows recently. Once you stop seeing the coordinators as merely people in space and naturals as people on the earth(which is what this particular critic is incapable of doing) then Seed becomes a whole lot better. Coordinators are in space because they were exiled there because they are objectively superior to naturals(threatening their existence in every way)and after they were exiled they made the most of what they had in space and eventually gained the power to threaten Earth from space and that restarted the conflict(AGE also has a similar kind of plot but in almost the opposite direction that also is pretty good), this is a 100% believable conflict(and FAR different than the conflict of Spacenoids and Earthnoids in traditional Gundam shows)that modern day critics are no longer capable of accurately critiquing because every war has to be wrong or irrational or based on racism etc when the war in the cosmic era is completely rational despite being tragic at the same time.
As for you not liking 0079, I don’t know how you can be a Gundam fan who watched 0079 and not like it. For the time the concept of people going to space and changing into almost aliens with weird powers was an extraordinary idea for a medium period, the market was saturated with aliens and monsters from outer space but the concept of aliens being humans who were merely changed by space itself was very unique and especially unique for a mecha anime with a focus on politics and large scale war. Gundam 0079 is beloved because it NAILS the execution better than basically any show of its genre.

"Drei" is German for three and is pronounced quite similar to the English dry.
To me 00 feels like a refinement of many concepts that have been done more clumsily (by comparison) on earlier Gundam series.
Setsuna makes so much more sense as the "secret agent" emotionless, pretty-much-suicidal kid than Hero Yui for a very obvious example.
