Hi, you were on my suggested watch, so, came over.
I can't say I read the 1st one you had, & I just admittedly started watching.
Questions - Did you ever read Anne Rice's "The Witching Hour"? To me, that was THE MOST HORRIBLE READING EXPERIENCE EVER! Why? Like you said about "The Silent Patient" Anne decides to give WAY TOO MUCH DETAIL in every paragraph of "Witching Hour" & because she does this, it's like watching paint dry! Too much substance before whatever the pay off is.
I couldn't finish the book where it felt like an absolute chore to try.
2- Have you read Alma Katsu?
She does horror based on historical events.
So far, I've read her "The Hunger" based off the Dahmer party incident from WAY back when & I can't remember the title if the other one, but involves the USS BRITTANICA which @ 1st was a sister ship designed like the Titanic but refitted to become a "floating hospital".
She's not bad as a writer but sometimes seems to go "off script" a bit like she got confused about her own story.
I wish I could remember this one Stephen King book that had something about the afterlife but, the ending had whoever dies not go to heaven, but everyone goes to this world where they get to be slaves for giant ant like things.
It's depressing where it's one of those that doesn't have a "happy ending" but it struck me anyway, I just can't recall the title & hope you know the 1 I'm talking about?
      Anyway, good stuff so far.
Anyway, for Horror, I do like the usual suspects like King, Koontz, Campbell but have looked @ older stuff like Lovecraft & some others.
Not sure who my "favorite" writer of horror fiction is yet where I devour a lot of whatever comes out.

I’m so happy you’re doing book content now!! Not sure if you’ve read it yet but Night Film by Marisha Pessl is one of my favorites. A lot of adult horror/thriller books I read tend to have a lot of unnecessary s3x scenes and I was almost about to give up on the genre but then I read this book and it’s in my top 5 favorite books now.

I am all for more book content though body horror is something I can usually do without. I do enjoy being scared but at age 72, it is becoming increasingly hard to find novels that can do it. I recommend, 'I Remember You' by the Icelandic author, Yrsa Sigurdardottir, the most frightening book I've read in the past 20 years. Read this at night, alone except for your cat or dog and the sound of the wind outside.

I read 70 books this year, mostly horror/thrillers. Here were my faves: The Murders of Molly Southbourne by Tade Thompson, Follow Me to Ground by Sue Rainsford, The Case Against Satan by Ray Russel, The Patient by Jasper DeWitt, No Exit by Taylor Jenkins, The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey, Dark Cities by Christopher Golden and others, and The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty.
Like you, I also read the Troop by Nick Cutter and The Ruins by Scott B. Smith this year. Out of the above list, I highly recommend you read The Exorcist. Even though I have seen the movie many times, the book was infinitely better. It is one of my all-time favorite books; it actually made me cry at the end, which is so hard to do.

My favorite novel I read this year was NOS4A2 by Joe Hill, it took me absolutely by surprise because the concept just sounded so ridiculous. Christmasland? It sounds like a Goosebumps novel, but FUCK does it work really well. Although I'd say the scariest for me this year was definitely The Only Good Indians because of the basketball scene you mention and just the entire first part of the novel is pitch perfect buildup and shocking payoff, in my opinion.

Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion is super good as well and probably my fave book of all time and really can’t be compared to the movie; it’s so different, more adult, and written like poetry! Another good series if you’re into unique reads (a lot of it is you reading text convos, files swiped off people’s computers, journal entries, etc) is the Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. They’re a little more sci-fi but have some good horror mixed in and are also very quick reads despite their size because of the way they’re formatted.

I love reading & am glad to see you post about books! I’m obsessed with the Troop!!! I love his descriptions & how he writes friendships!!! Four great horror books I read this year that you may like are: The Cipher by Kathe Koja (the writing is so original & unique!!! It’s about a couple that finds a portal they term The funhole & things happen when they decide to put things in it…..), My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones (it’s about a girl who loves slashers & thinks she may be in an actual slasher!! This book meant the world to me-it’s a love letter to horror movies!!!! There are references & homages to at least 50 horror movies. I actually cried reading his acknowledgments!); and finally a short & dark book called Tender Is The Flesh by Augustina Bazterrica (a terrifying novel about the evil humans can inflict on themselves. It’s incredible & terribly beautiful, but just know it’s grim and not at all hopeful). I will definitely pick up The Deep based on your review! My favorite Riley sager is The Last Time I Lied (it takes place in a summer camp & gave me Friday the 13th vibes -in a good way!)

I'm a booktuber so I really appreciate the book content! I also read Final Girls this year and did not like it. My favorite horror novel I read this year was House of Leaves. That one was incredible! I've also read 2 Ruth Ware books this year, I definitely enjoy her stuff. I read Woman in Cabin 10 for Halloween, and I'm currently reading One by One. I love water/ship stories, too. I really need to read the Haunting of Hill House. I read Shirley Jackson's book We Have Always Lived in the Castle this year and did not like it. I loved her short story the Lottery so I'm open to giving her another chance!

You know I got around 400 pages into the house of Leaves, and whilst it was a absolutely fascinating and intricately written story, it felt a little too heavy? I'm wondering what you thought of the last half of the book, and if the payoff was satisfactory cos I might pick it back up :)

@@Ldawgerino late reply, but finishing house of leaves is so worth it. There was one part of that book that disturbed me so much I had to put it down for a while. It will stay with you.

Yay! The more book content the better :) From the horror I've read this year, I think you'd really enjoy Benighted by JB Priestley. It's an old gothic novel with really immersive writing. It also was made into a movie called The Old Dark House in the 1930s, so it could be good for a video if you like old movies.

I LOVED the film The Ruins-- it was one of my favorite horror films of all time. I think that's why I waited so long to read the novel. Despite having read A Simple Plan (which if you haven't read it yet and you love Scott Smith, I highly recommend) I wasn't sure I would like the novel like I did the film. I read it in a week, not because it was so long but because I kept needing to put it down to let it digest. It was one of the most magnificent horror novels I'd ever read. I cannot think of many that are better than it.
I am looking forward to Nick Cutter novels, based on how you've praised it, and I appreciate the trigger warning because that would have caught me off guard in a bad way.
Everyone puts down the Ruins because of the prose but they are missing such essential pieces of why it is so scary. Great video! You've given me food for thought for quite a few of my anticipated reads.

You should try Survive the Night by Riley Sager, it was the first book I read by him and got me hooked. It's not entirely "scary" but it was so entertaining and had good thriller elements throughout.

You should DEFINITELY read The Passage book series. It is a 3 book series, and it is kind of an epic vampire-zombie apocalypse and it is SUPER original, it is one of my favorite books of all times and I think you would really enjoy the reading. Those are AMAZING! Not horror, more like adventure and epic for sure, but it keeps the tension going all through the series and it is just an amazing reading experience!

I'd recommend Twelve Nights At Rotter House for a *great* haunted house book, V. Castro's novels/novellas, and also Kathe Koja for some great vintage horror.

I was walking around my house just listening to this video and not watching it and when I heard “A book that makes me emotional by just looking at it” I was like “yup. It has to be The Only Good Indians because that’s the only book I’ve ever read that managed to scare me and make me cry (out of beauty not terror lol). I love that it can be slow but when something happens… IT HAPPENS and it is so worth the work to get there.

Yes Book Content! I like videos like this where someone talks about more than one book. I tend to not watch in-depth reviews of one certain novel because I like to not know too much before I go into it (even if it's spoiler-free) But I'll be excited for your videos either way!

Also, have you already read 11/22/63 by Stephen King? It's really not a horror book, more like a time travel story. But I just want to use this opportunity and recommend it to you as it's one of my favorite books ever (and you appreciate Stephen King, I see). The characters have stayed with me for a long time even after finishing reading and I have gone back to it a lot which almost never happens with me. Give it a try :)

My favorite book this year was absolutely The Only Good Indians. I also sobbed at the end-it was such a beautiful book! I read Night of the Mannequins and My Heart is a Chainsaw (also Stephen Graham Jones) and really enjoyed those ones, too.
Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon and Last Days by Adam Nevill were a couple of other favorites from this year.
I’ve been in school for the last 7 years (I completed my Bachelor’s and went straight into a Master’s program😭) and had absolutely no time to read for fun. There are so many amazing horror books out there and I’m so excited to read them all now that I finally have the time!

There are soooo many absolute duds in this genre, it's really nice to see this kind of content from someone I know has similar taste to me! Also love love love that you opted for a spoiler-free format, but still included trigger warnings! I know that can be challenging in the horror community playing with triggers is very much the norm. Yes for more book content! I didn't care much for The Silent Patient either. I've heard mostly negative reviews from Nothing But Blackened Teeth. That amazing cover gone to waste is unfortunate. I haven't read it myself yet. I'm still curious about it but I'll be waiting til I can get my hands on a copy I don't have to pay for. I haven't read the Riley Sager Final Girls book but I read Grady Hendrix' and its fantastic. One of my faves of the year. Hope you enjoy it! The Ruins is one of my fave horror books of all time. Love the book and the film. Excited to see it ranking high on your list!

I read both The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires and The Final Girl Support Group this year and I really enjoyed them. I love how he mixes humor with horror.
