love your book videos so much!! i read the deep on your recommendation and it was disgustingly disturbingly hauntingly beautiful, i could not put it down 😭
Do you think these books would be better or worse as audiobooks? I thought I'd check them out with my library first but all that's available are audiobook versions.
@@chestersnapThe Troop has some serious animal cruelty scenes, and if that's a no-go for you, print might be better so you can skip/skim those scenes easier. I listened to it, and I skipped those parts, but it was annoying to figure out when the horribleness was over. Otherwise, I enjoyed it in audio format, it didn't detract from it at all imo. The Deep is much slower, and I think I maybe would have DNF'ed if I'd read it in print, but because I listened to it I could put it on in the background while doing other stuff. It turned out to be fine, but I just feel like in print it might have been a bit of a struggle for me. Either way, both are fine in audio format, and I guess it depends on your own preferences if they would work better in print or not.
I found it in my high school's library and it's what really got me hooked on horror too. same guy wrote a book with another guy more recently thats pretty good too, but I really think The Deep is the peak of his writing
You inspire me to try so many things. Books, puzzles, movies, fashion. You TRULY re-sparked my love for horror and I watch every video you come out with. Your work is so appreciated ✨❤️
i absolutely love your book content and i hope it becomes a regular thing on your channel! i read cabin at the end of the world because of you and i loved it, in a way you took me out of a 2 year reading slump so im so thankful sarah
I recently read A Head Full of Ghosts and was BLOWN AWAY. I was honestly shocked by how much I loved it. I genuinely sobbed while reading the second to last chapter, and will think about it for a long time. One of my all times for sure ❤
I really appreciate the comments on how some male authors write women, that's a big no for me so thank u! I read home before dark and house at the end.. because of your videos and i loved both.
The Nothing Man, is amazing. A serial killers one surviving victim grows up to write a book about him and he reads the book and discovers how close she's getting to catching him. Amazing switches of POV and timelines
My husband guessed the twist in The Last House on Needless Street just from me telling him about the book as I was reading it. To say I was shocked is an understatement. lol. It's my favorite book I've read this year though !
I love when you do your horror book content! Also, I'm so glad you feel the same way I do about Riley Sager. Everyone is on the Riley train, and I just can't seem to get on it... also A Head Full of Ghosts is one of my favorites by far
yay for more book content!! im so glad there's love for Horrorstor. it's my favourite grady hendrix book but typically isn't for a lot of other people lol. i have sooo much to read on my tbr too it's frustrating haha. and it was interesting the way you categorised each tier! you might enjoy Dear Laura by Gemma Amor (i haven't read Penpal but the way you talked about it sounded a bit similar)
You introduced me to Paul Tremblay and I can't thank you enough!! Head Full of Ghosts is one of the most effective and incredible books I have ever read. I even bought a copy for my sister for Christmas!
Two interesting books I read recently are Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw and The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley. Both fun reads for very different reasons with the first being more of traditional horror/haunted house story with Japanese mythology and the second is a mystery thriller whodunnit. Great ranking by the way! Gave me a ton to add to the reading list. Also, I’ve been chasing the high that Home Before Dark gave me and have read every other Riley Sager book because of it. It never came.
OH MY GOD YASSSS. I literally screamed "slay queen" as soon as I saw this get posted. I have been reading SO much this year, and have been dying for more book content, especially horror, as 21/36 reads for me this year have been horror. Thanks so much Sarah!
@@PossessedbyHorror my favorite horror read and favorite book of the entire year is Juniper and Thorn by Ava Reid. It isn't the main focus, but there is a romance, and there is a sex scene, and I usually hate those both like you, but I thought they were fine here. The rest though is just pure magic, the writing is simply superb, and I cried like three times. 5/5 ⭐️
i've never heard of it but Kill Creek kind of sounds like Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk, it's a bunch of people trapped in a house on a writer's retreat, it's really weird and i remember really liking the uniqueness of Haunted when it came out.
I'm so excited to dive into so many of these! I listened to the audiobook of Head Full of Ghosts on a whim on a long road trip and it is easily top 5 now.
I know this is likely to get buried, but I noticed you liked a lot of beautiful descriptions, one book I read that wasnt horror, but did love is called The Last Children Of Tokyo, by Yoko Tawada, I loved all of the metaphors and it feels like the book was written to be pretty, the ending was weird but I still really enjoyed the rest of it, it's not horror, but I would 100% recommend it for the beauty of it, its relatively short, being 138 pages long too, so that's a bonus!!
The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell is one I would recommend for something along the lines of The Haunting of Hill House and The Woman in Black. I would also recommend Naomi's Room by Jonathan Aycliffe, which is a personal favorite of mine but it may be a bit too much for some people. I'm also a big Clive Barker fan.
ResurrectionDreams-I love both The Woman In Black & Haunting Of Hill House, two of my favourite ghost stories. Also Naomi's Room is so good. I read that book when I was a kid & it's still the most frightening book I've ever read.
Finally Paul Tremblay getting the appreciation he deserves! I feel like Josh Malerman falls into a similar bucket to Tremblay in my mind so I'd recommend his stuff if you haven't read it (I've read A House at the Bottom of a Lake & Daphne and enjoyed both). On Catriona Ward, I actually liked Sundial even more than Needless Street so definitely would recommend that one!
Thanks for more recommendations! I read Penpal after your other book review and it’s subtly horrifying and once you’ve finished it the ending has such a haunting feel. I just need a book that scares me the last book that I was generally scared whilst reading was Gerald’s Game (way before the film came out) I read it dreading the nights in the book lol, other books are good but just not finding them scary
I was binge reading King's books in publishing order except for having started with Pet Semetary for a good chunk of the last year. Pet Semetary had me turning on more lights than usual and the books I read after also left me feeling pretty scared and either King gets less scary or the exposure left me less easily scared. Until Gerald's Game. Gerald's Game was terrifying. I agree that the nights in it were the worst and then the twist made me retroactively terrified of everything.
I read Into The Drowning Deep recently and absolutely loved it! It was weird but also a bit campy and felt like it would be a great large cast b-tier creature movie. Highly recommend to anyone who is into that sort of vibe.
I bought this book at a discount store a long time ago and it sat partially read on my shelf for years. I picked it up and read it last year and absolutely loved it! I was a little disappointed in the ending but the rest of the book was so good and had so many twists that it made it for it imo lol
“House of Leaves,” by Danielewski, needs to at least have your attention. It’s a tough read given the layout and design, but very chilling and re-readability.
I'd recommend reading "Intercepts" by T. J. Payne. It's one of the best books I've read this year so far. It's fast-paced, creative and it disturbed me a lot. It's quite gory, though 😅. But, I just want to thank you for your channel's amazing content. I watched the video in which you talked about "The Troop" and "The Only Good Indians"; your description made me curious to start reading horror fiction again. Well, it turned out that I've read 20 books this year so far and it has been great for me to improve my English and do something different in my free time. Can't wait for some more book content on the channel ✨🥂✨
I just finished The Last House on Needless street after you talked about it in a different video and I could not put it down so I'm back for more recommendations. I'm waiting for Penpal from the library then I'm gonna give A Head Full of Ghosts a shot. Love the book content videos!
Paul Tremblay is incredible. I’ve read 3 of his books now and loved them all- Cabin at The End of the World and Head Full of Ghosts are absolutely in my favorite horror books. And I met Paul Tremblay recently and he’s a really nice person too which makes it even better! If you’re looking for a good book I’d recommend This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno- it was absolutely amazing in my opinion!!!
@@ninipanini11 I've actually met him 2x now- benefit of living in the same area as him! He's a very relaxed guy, down to earth and personable! He's got a great taste in books too which is always great when looking for a recommendation :)
I have three books on my shelf that I was going to sell but you just changed my mind; Penpal, A Headful of Ghosts, and Home Before Dark. I will put them on my tbr shortlist. One I would recommend that I think you will put in your top category is Brother by Ania Ahlborn. I read it earlier this year and I can't stop thinking about it. I also just finished Into the Drowning Deep and I loved every moment of it, even though I am afraid of the water and would never get on a cruise ship. :D
Finally someone feels the same way about Riley Sager. I really liked Home Before Dark so I read 3 of his other books, and didn't like any of them. I was very confused as to what happened. Also Needless Street, I was listening to it as an audiobook and when the cat started narrating I was like what?!
Recommendation: “House of Leaves” by Mark Z. Danielewski. Also make sure to listen to Poe’s album “Haunted” which is sort of a companion piece during your readings. They are siblings and I cannot recommend this pair enough.
I thought The Only Good Indians was PAINFULLY boring. Also 90 percent of the "horror" was just animal torture. I got like 3/4 of the way done and still couldn't finish it and I tried so hard to finish it. I even tried switching to audio book! Sorry I just feel passionately about how bad it was 😩
i'm curious if you finished House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski , I happened to saw its cover on one of your videos but never found your review/opinion on it
I needed this video!! I have been waiting for another book video, because I have read 7 of the books you have recommended because I trust your insight so much! I also have 4 of these in my current TBR! So excited!! Head Full of Ghosts and The Last House on Needless Street have been my favorites so far! Even though it's not on this list due to not being considered "horror", Dark Matter by Blake Crouch that you recommended is also a top book for me!!
I've got a recommendation for you! I would give The Last Days of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnopp a go. It hits a lot of what you like in horror movies, but in book form. It's essentially a found footage, documentary/reality TV esque story where the "host" is trying to disprove exorcisms. The narrative starts off light but devolves into something really dark and genuinely creepy. At any rate, I continue to send you positive vibes and wish good health to you, your fian-slay, and your wee babe.
Oh I’m so glad you liked Penpal. I found that story on creepypasta first and it freaked me out in the best way. Like paranoid to sleep alone for a while level. I then bought the book and read it to my mom and then read it again by myself. Definitely on of my tops of all time.
i LOVED horrorstör. it was the most scared i’ve been by a book, it was the perfect combo of weird and scary and interesting and campy!! just perfect. loved it
Some great books in here. If you haven't read Adam Nevill yet, you should. He has a similar voice to Cutter, but doesn't always feel the need to mutilate an animal in the story lol
Hi, me again, I finished the video - I personally did not love The Only Good Indians, but I thought it was a good book. However, my second favorite horror read of the year is probably My Heart Is a Chainsaw - I really hope you read that one day because it's all about slashers and horror movies and horror tropes, and the opening/ending parts of the book are WILD. The middle part is a bit slower, but if you like SGJ writing style, I think you're in for a major horror treat.
I read Penpal when I was like sixteen, and it completely altered my brain chemistry. Thinking about it still scares me, it is genuinely one of the most upsetting (but in a good way) books I’ve ever read.
I just started, and finished, Home After Dark, thanks to your praise of it. What a fun and fantastic story. Thank you! I will now trust all your recs. I guess this is what it’s like to be red pilled.
I really want to read Tender is the Flesh and The Slob, because TikTok always talks about them. I used to read SO MUCH, but these days I can't focus on reading that well, so I will probably try audiobooks instead.
I actually liked Dark Places, its the only book I've read by the author but I thought it was insanely bleak like you said, but also written very beautifully. Gillian is one of those authors that has a certain style and prose, like if someone handed me one of her books without telling who the author is, I could tell its her just by the style of writing. I completely understand why some people don't like her work though, her stories are usually very dark, depressing, and have a certain hopeless vibe to them. I never read the book, but the TV show adaption of Sharp Objects was also another work by her that I enjoyed. More so than Dark Places (book). I know there is a film but I can't remember if I watched it or not honestly.
I enjoy your ranking and reviews and have added to my To Read list. Currently reading Head Full of Ghosts! I also started listening to the No Sleep Podcast on your recommendation. They recently finished a 10 part story called This Book Will Kill You. I really enjoyed it. If you like short horror they have several shorts included in it. It's kind of like creepy pasta and may be considered YA horror, not sure but the performance of it was great. In fact I'm not sure I would have enjoyed as much if I had not listened to it. It may be on Audible too, I haven't checked.
Only The Good Indians is my absolute fav!! It has just stayed with me and I can't shake it!! And yes I cried too! So tense and beautiful and wow. And and and yes The Ruins is totally a classic.
I read a few books by Riley Sager, I found him pretty readable but not very... good? So I kinda gave up on him after two or three books, but I haven't read Home Before Dark so I might give that one a chance before binning him entirely. LOVED Last House on Needless Street, I instantly went and added everything by the author to my wishlist, SO good. Most of the books on here I haven't read are on my tbr, but I'm a little intimidated by Nick Cutter, I hear great things but I'm not sure he's for me given I'm just not into animal harm or body horror.
Omg I was just last night rewatching all your book videos, because I needed some books to write down for a Christmas book exchange. And I’m just generally in need of more books other than Stephen King lol.
Paul Tremblay is awesome, I’d recommend his book Survivor Song if you haven’t read it. It’s a different take on the zombie genre that still scratches all the itches you would want with a zombie story. Almost the whole book takes place over the course of a few hours and it’s really fast paced with great characters. The only thing is, one of the main characters is pretty far along in her pregnancy and the book obviously has some intense scenes concerning that fact, so it might be a good idea to read it once you’re no longer pregnant lol
I suggest The Library at Mount Char! It's horror/fantasy, and the premise would make you think it's just fantasy, but the horror comes from how relentless and absolutely brutal the book gets at times. Highly recommend.
In Kill by Scott Thomas you mentioned authors came to stay at this house. That reminds me of Villa Diodati in Geneva during the "Year Without a Summer" in 1816. Mary Shelley, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, and others found themselves trapped indoors due to the peculiar weather caused by the eruption of Mount Tambora. To pass the time, they decided to challenge each other to write the most chilling supernatural story. From this challenge cult classic was born - Marey Shelley's Modern Prometheus aka Frankenstein . Besides her there was also Lord Byron poem Darkness which explores themes of apocalypse and despair in the aftermath. and John Williams Polidori's "The Vampyre" , a short story featuring Lord Ruthven is considered one of earliest works of vampire fiction , years before Bram Stroker's Dracula
i know you said you weren’t interested in gillian flynn’s other books but you might be interested in the adaptation of sharp objects if you haven’t already seen it. i loved it!
You should check out No One Gets Out Alive by Adam Neville! Also, the Ruins is one of my top 10 favorite horror novels. If you havent checked out Scott Smiths other novel, a Simple Plan, you absolutely should. It's also AMAZING. 🤎✨️
I would recommend “Come With Me” by Ronald Malfi. One of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Made me cry multiple times and was so creepy. Also “Come Closer” by Sara Gran, “The Bell Chime” by Mona Kobbani, and “The Shuddering” by Ania Ahlborn!
I've heard of people who say they've read an entire book in one sitting and I thought that was impossible until I came across The Troop - absolute masterpiece.
I liked Horrostor... but the ending was a let down. I despise phony "happy" endings... like in The Haunting of Hill House (the TV series) Have the guts to let the story unfold to its coherent dire ending, ffs
I can relate to that "jealous" catergory so so much. I´m a "writer" myself (have not published anything yet tho lmao) and there are so many great books you read and think "man, wish I came up with that idea myself
Ok I would love for you to do a video ranking books about water horror!!! it's also some of my favorite and I feel like it's really rare and sometimes hard to do well. I'd love recommendations
I loved the troop. Body horror is definitely my thing, but when I read the deep I chose audiobook and tried to get through it while at work but I think I was to distracted and after two attempts I DNF’d it. But I’ve been hearing SO many good things about the deep I think I’m going to get a physical copy and try again. He is definitely an amazing horror author.
Hmm… Since I liked Horrorstor and Home Before Dark, maybe I should prioritize my copy of Head Full of Ghosts and look into Penpal and Last House on Needless Street. (Pretty sure Nick Cutter is not for me.) In a Dark Dark Wood made me decide to avoid Ruth Ware completely. I was looking for a mystery thriller, but not one where the reveal had me going, "So, what was your plan if this person made slightly different choices?" (Won't go into specifics, because spoilers, but the plan was not a good one, imo.)
I recently found The Last House on Needle Street for a very reasonable price on Kindle. Can't wait to read it! I own Paperbacks From Hell by Grady Hendrix. Very entertaining for a reference book. Still need to read my copy of The Ruins....
Also wanted to say I hope you're feeling good I know it's close to that time for you.. Labor will be hard, but the moment you hold your child it will all have been worth it. I hope everything goes as smoothly as possible and I send you positive vibes as you enter an exciting new chapter of life and bring a literal new person into this world! Exciting stuff!
I feel like no one gets that the characters in Kill Creek are written like their specific genre. There's a king, a lovecraft, a kathe koja, and a rl Stine styled author, and each of them live in their specific world of Americana, cosmic horror, splatterpunk, and Midwestern teen style of horror, BRILLIANTLY including the bad tropes with each. I think this is the only horror book that you can say people legitimately don't "get". I hate that as a complaint, but everyone misses the horror themes when they talk about that book. Saying same story different author for it only cements how much that was missed.
Cool tier list! When animal horror is mentioned, would Cujo be an example? Not sure if I fully understand what is meant by animal horror but I'll definitely check some of these books out 🙏
For every book that I’ve read I agree with your ranking! Very excited to check out the books that I haven’t gotten around to yet. It’s hilarious because literally every one of them is on my TBR 😂

If you’re looking for a good book I’d recommend This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno- it was absolutely amazing in my opinion!!!
That is so cool that you met the author!! How was it?
@@ninipanini11 I've actually met him 2x now- benefit of living in the same area as him! He's a very relaxed guy, down to earth and personable! He's got a great taste in books too which is always great when looking for a recommendation :)
@@clancyconnolly495 amazing!! I am so jealous! Give us the recs plsss
Yaaaay book content 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thank you ❤
Recommendation: “House of Leaves” by Mark Z.
Oh I really liked this. It was pretty clever and twisty.
couldn't agree more with your thoughts on Kill Creek, I found myself rolling my eyes over and over again with the author's character descriptions.
I was just looking for more books to put on my Christmas list! This is perfect timing 🥳
Oh I’m so glad you liked Penpal. I found that story on creepypasta first and it freaked me out in the best way. Like paranoid to sleep alone for a while level. I then bought the book and read it to my mom and then read it again by myself. Definitely on of my tops of all time.
Haunting of Hill House got me out of a long reading slump. In my top 5. Maybe even top 3. So glad I found your channel.
i LOVED horrorstör. it was the most scared i’ve been by a book, it was the perfect combo of weird and scary and interesting and campy!! just perfect. loved it
I haven’t read it but the concept reminds me of the Endless IKEA SCP.
Some great books in here. If you haven't read Adam Nevill yet, you should. He has a similar voice to Cutter, but doesn't always feel the need to mutilate an animal in the story lol
I’ve been wanting to read The Ritual for so long now!
I used to read SO MUCH, but these days I can't focus on reading that well, so I will probably try audiobooks instead.
for the life of me I cannot retain anything from an audiobook I’ve tried 😭
Oh no! Gillian Flynn is a fave! Sharp Objects is my favorite! Dark places was for sure my least favorite!
For me it's the complete opposite. Sharp Objects is still really good, gave it 4 stars.
I just picked up head full of ghosts at the library this week! Looking forward to reading it.
Have you read anything by Darcy Coates? She does some haunted house type stuff. 😊
I am so excited to this video! I love to get more recommendations with new Horror books.
I thought the same thing when I read ‘Final Girls’ and I haven’t been able to pick up another Riley Sager since, even with all the hype.
I read this last year! My best friend was pregnant at the time and it was such a weird reading experience because of that haha
Ive been waitingggg for this video!!!
so glad i found horror ranking that doesn't mention Stephan king, because (and i know i'm gonna get hate for this, but) i hate his books!
Besides her there was also Lord Byron poem Darkness which explores themes of apocalypse and despair in the aftermath. and John Williams Polidori's "The Vampyre" , a short story featuring Lord Ruthven is considered one of earliest works of vampire fiction , years before Bram Stroker's Dracula
i know you said you weren’t interested in gillian flynn’s other books but you might be interested in the adaptation of sharp objects if you haven’t already seen it. i loved it!
The book version was just as good too! The book Dark Places was such a let down after how good Sharp Objects was.
@@cry_katy the book was phenomenal!
You should check out No One Gets Out Alive by Adam Neville! Also, the Ruins is one of my top 10 favorite horror novels. If you havent checked out Scott Smiths other novel, a Simple Plan, you absolutely should. It's also AMAZING. 🤎✨️
I'm not sure if you've read Final Girl Support Group yet, but I really liked it and would for sure recommend it!
Currently I’m reading “Lord of the Flies” which is a book I’ve seen a lot RUclipsrs recommended. “The Troop” is the next book I’ll read
I liked Horrostor... but the ending was a let down. I despise phony "happy" endings... like in The Haunting of Hill House (the TV series)
Have the guts to let the story unfold to its coherent dire ending, ffs
I can relate to that "jealous" catergory so so much. I´m a "writer" myself (have not published anything yet tho lmao) and there are so many great books you read and think "man, wish I came up with that idea myself
Ok I would love for you to do a video ranking books about water horror!!! it's also some of my favorite and I feel like it's really rare and sometimes hard to do well. I'd love recommendations
great video! i'm looking forward to reading some of these at your recommendation!
girl we need a link to your goodreads if you have one, would love to follow you! :)
(Pretty sure Nick Cutter is not for me.)
In a Dark Dark Wood made me decide to avoid Ruth Ware completely.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is a really great book! I know you said top 2 tiers, but I was pleasantly surprised by that book
Not sure if I fully understand what is meant by animal horror but I'll definitely check some of these books out 🙏
There is a show in apple tv that is called Home before Dark, is not based on that book??
For every book that I’ve read I agree with your ranking! Very excited to check out the books that I haven’t gotten around to yet. It’s hilarious because literally every one of them is on my TBR 😂
you need to read this thing between us! such a trip and i feel like it’d be up your alley!! loveee the book content btw. horror is all i read!
My two favourite King shorts are The Gingerbread Girl and The Long Walk ..!
I think you definitely should talk about what the books are about when you do book videos! :)
Just ordered The Troop! Don't know what that says about me but I'm looking forward to reading it!
YAAAY TY! I’ve been wanting to pick up some horror books and get back into reading
