  • Ok, everyone is going to think I am clowning in the title... But I'm NOT. I ACTUALLY AM SO FREAKING BLOWN AWAY BY THIS WATCH... I'm officially won over to the Sinn life.
TODAY, we are looking at the Sinn EZM 3F that I am borrowing from my gorgeous, fabulous friend mr_watchaddict .
Sinn is a really interesting one. It was one of those brands that I knew had a cult following but... for whatever reason.. just didn't really speak to me.

Once you get into German tool watches, there is really no turning back. I have been wearing my Damasko DC67 for years now, and not a scratch, not even a scuff… as good as the day it left the store. An actual tool that can stand up to the physical assault of daily life. Ditto for my son’s DS30. So, when the Rolex glitterati fluff their feathers all over the internet, owners of Sinn, Damasko, Fortis, etc. just quietly smile to themselves. Welcome to the non-pretentious watch crowd, Britt.

This is your Pygmalion moment. “By Jove, she has finally got it.” The founder Helmut Sinn was colorful but the true steward of Sinn is Lothar Schmidt who bought Sinn over 25 years ago from Mr. Sinn and grew it. Mr. Schmidt is a mechanical engineer who started at IWC and then became the first Technical Director at A. Lange & Sohne when it was revived by Gunter Blumlein and Walter Lange. Schmidt was a close associate of Gunter Blumlein who was a legendary figure in horology executive suites having run Jaeger LeCoultre and IWC before reviving Lange and meeting an untimely death from cancer. Mr. Schmidt is well aware of how to value engineer a watch without compromising quality and performance. He makes fine watches available at affordable prices by using manufactured movements which are then modified by Sinn to enhance long term performance and durability. Sinn does not just drop movements into the case. Speaking of cases, Sinn is a co-owner of a very highly regarded case maker SUG in Glashutte and case engineering is another area where Sinn brings higher than average expertise and value to its brand customers. The Sinn factory in Frankfort is a modern engineering masterpiece because Mr. Schmidt is the kind of employer that is as concerned about the working conditions of his employee/associates as he is about the bottom line. While I am not discussing the specific reference on your video, nothing goes out of the Sinn factory that is not a first class watch no matter how affordable the price. Sinn makes the kind of democratically priced quality tool watches that Rolex once made when it was guided by the values of its founder Hans Wilsdorf instead of the current grandees who run Rolex with KGB secrecy. Most people who obsess about Rolex would be well advised to learn more about Sinn and Lothar Schmidt.

@Will Harris Clearly you haven't put it next to any random 300 USD dive watch from Seiko, which are visible from the moon without a telescope, that's how bright those are. :) But indeed, Sinn, Damasko and Nomos are known for their shit lume. Which is weird, because Archimede / Ickler and Stowa have cracking lume on their Fliegers again, so it's not like the Germans don't know decent lume.

Thanks for the history Howard. It's great to get the background information. I got my one and only Sinn in 2019 when participating in an engineering fair in Munich. I live near Stuttgart. They had an AD close to the conference centre so it was an accidental purchase to some extent and as a former navy diver and present recreational diver it was something I was interested to have as a backup beyond my Seiko's and Orients which are great divers I don't mind getting scratched. It's a very good watch, high quality and very tough......except for the lume, frankly it's surprisingly very bad and I don't believe it was a QC issue with just my watch. No matter how well it's built, if it fails on one aspect of diving functionality it fails as a dive watch. Sinn needs to learn from Seiko, their watches shine like a torch in the murkiest waters. Seiko Prospex divers outdo my own Submariner with ease. I heard anecdotally that there are some microbrands that are even better than Seiko. The Subby is still good but I don't use it in the water anyway. I sold the Sinn as I had intended to use it as an everyday dive watch but it didn't pass the usability test.

Nice watch Brittany, my dad bought me a Rolex datejust 1603 in 1975 for £206 - allowing for inflation that should be £2000 today. The fact that a comparable datejust today will cost around £7300 demonstrates that Rolex have grown to think an awful lot about themselves. Personally I think they may disappear up their own backsides considering that from next year a used Rolex will cost more than a new one. The circumstances are absolutely crazy.

Many thanks Britt for presenting Sinn - these are real tool devices. Especially the EZM 2B- GSG9 - filled with oil, so that you can read the watch from all angles. Even if your head is above water level while your wrist and the watch is below. GSG9 refers to the special German Opps Unit who released in 1977 a Lufthansa airplan in Mogadischu. There are also some Fliegers (Pilot) watches which are great (103 and 104) - and the price level is really ok. A good ammendment to the Cartiers in your collection :) Greetings from Germany

Having owned three Sinns, once you get used to using them, the virtues of more premium watches fade away easily. They get more wrist time than any other one in the collection (especially the 756UTC). They are just so well made, serve their purpose so well… If you ever come across an EZM1, you’re gonna like it even more than that one, since the EZM1 is the real, original EZM. Just perfect with its simplified chrono, awesome 5100 heart. Side note: IMO, Tudor doesn’t even come close to Sinn in areas like purpose, technology, and build quality. Thanks for your video.

Very nice video, and nice to see you discussing tool watches. I own 3 Sinn's myself (103st, EZM13, 856UTC), and love them. IMHO, Sinn represents quality for money and offers the best features available in a sub-luxury brand. They are feature-rich and provide a great benchmark for what a good tool watch costs (although the prices have gone up) without the hype or expense of luxury. Your comparison with Rolex is a good one yet, as you suggest at the end, perhaps Tudor is the better comparison. Sinn's are similar to Tudor as tool watches, but do not have the luxury refinements, movements, dressiness or flashiness (they do make some dress watches but the tool watches are their core competency). Both Tudor and Sinn provide value for money, imho. And, yes, Tudor could be considered the luxury version of Sinn. All the best!

Because the workmanship is top and I like the factual elegance of the watches very much. In addition, there is ( still ) a good price-performance ratio with sensible technology. The new collection has shown, however, that Sinn is still innovative, but the price screw is slowly overtightened.

I’m not generally a fan of LHD watches, but this and the Pelagos work for me visually. I’ve kind of grown bored with larger watches of about 41mm and larger. It would really take something exceptional to get me to budge on that. This EZM, from that family within their catalogue, it would be my choice.
A friend of mine has either a 556 or the slightly larger version, he’s not sure which and I haven’t had calipers on me in his presence, either way, such a great watch. Used to be a steal for the money, now it’s just a great value.
Their U- series do nothing for me personally, but I understand their appeal. Their Navitimer is the one I’d choose of Breitling’s if I wanted the busiest chronometer I could tolerate.
Sinn’s most overlooked offering is their two handed dress watch which is now offered in a sterling silver option. Nobody thinks Sinn for dress watches, they should expand into that genre more.

Rolex fatigue is not rare, most people that previously got those watches at the AD have the same condition, and are self/medicating the same way. The proof is the massive stockpile of Rolex for sale on the grey market. Speculators have dumped a good bit of their stockpile, and consumers aren’t biting on the bait so prices are drifting down.

Sinn makes great watches. I bought a full German (day wheel is in German) 103 ST SA around 15 years ago. I bought it used, no telling how old it was when I bought it. I've owned a few chronographs, this one is the best.
That old watch still operates every bit as well as it did the day I got it, keeps time within 1-1.5 seconds a day.

Hi there, I am truely and deeply in love with my Sinn St Sa I since 2018. No weird crown positioning and the same ultrafunctional asthetics. I wear this watch mor often than my Omega Seamaster 300. That says a lot. You should take a ckoser look at this model. BTW: Did anyone noticed that the song used in the new volvo ad (right before your Video started) sounds exactly like one of your patreon songs 😉. Cheers from Germany.

However, about the crown positioning, we all should take off our watches to set them so it should be a non-issue having it on the right OR (even better) on the left! Giving greater freedom of movement is a great thing! 😊👍🏼

That’s a good looking watch. Although I would not buy it because of the screw down crown. Take that watch somewhere that has a lot of people and ask them all to unscrew and screw the crown back on to see how long it will take to damage the threads. Either you’re gonna do this to prove me wrong or you already know that expensive watch won’t pass the test. I prefer pull-push crowns especially on mechanical watches.

I got into watches over lockdown & my first automatic watch was a Sinn 556I (then a Tudor). Really like it, biggest “moan & niggle” is the clasp on the bracelet - it’s the weak point on the watch & don’t need the divers / pilot suit extension. Apart from that, 👍

@@BrittPearceWatches They are different style of watches so it’s comparing them is a bit difficult. The Tudor is a 1926 (white & blue) 36mm & has a jubilee style bracelet which is great but lacks microadjustment. It’s slimmer, less “tool watch” like - both the Tudor & the Sinn use a SW200 movement but the Tudor has a steel caseback so you can’t see it) Really like it - I got 2 more Tudors this summer a Prince Date-Day 36mm half-tone (same model a Tim Caseback Watch’s) & a Prince Date 34mm half-tone mosaic / linen dial.
