The Manchester UK Jewish community is the second largest community in the UK. This video is a bit of a glimpse of how the Jewish community in Manchester celebrates Purim. I have brought you so many videos from New York City, and I'm so delighted to bring you something from over the pond! The wonderful editor of this channel, Steve Milligan, was my delegate and he filmed this report for you all.

I'm from Manchester, I'm not Jewish but I play trumpet at a lot of Jewish Weddings. I love playing at them The music is fantastic and there is always a great party atmosphere. Thanks for coming to Manchester.

One lovely element of Purim in Manchester - that you hinted at - is that it tends to bring different kinds of Jews together from across a spectrum from Satmar to Reform and Progressive...only for a day, but they all have fun together: very moving.
I love England - I wish I could live there. It is absolutely wonderful - no matter what small village or large town you go to - it is unique and so full of history!
Oh my God this is my neighborhood!! My dad side is Jewish but not orthodox and I wasn't raised Jewish but I've been following your channel for a while and now I'm like oh God my homes in the video 😅😂🎉

Since you were not raised Jewish, does that mean your mother is a Christian?
This is hilarious and wonderful. I love how raucous they were, completely differently than in America, ha! :D We only have a very small Hasidic (Lubavitch) community here in southern semi-rural Rochester MN, but they do put on a good show for Purim! Outsiders are very encouraged to come, which I find interesting.
I thought it was hilarious too. :)
I think an out-of-town Purim show would be interesting for a very different set of reasons, and maybe I should plan to film one.
I've been following some of your videos lately and it was so nice to come across this one! I grew up in Manchester, in the "cholent pot" as we call it. Not chassidish but most of my neighbours were, my home street even made it into the video! Thank you so much for highlighting my childhood community.

This is cool and all. And, I may be biased, but nothing beats the liveliness of the New York Jewish communities. Since the Jewish population in New York is massive, there’s always tons of food options and different shops to explore. Fun fact: as of 2022, 1.6 million people in NYC are Jewish, which is pretty cool.. and it makes NYC the most Jewish place on earth outside of Israel. 💕 😊
As a born and bred Mancunian and I've been to other places for Purim, Manchester has the best Purim I've experienced. The floats (flatbed trucks) with ppl dancing on them, to the Camp simcha street concert, nothing beats it including Brooklyn

I always watch and love your videos but never comment. However this video is especially special to me as I live in Manchester!!
In terms of the diversity, a huge difference between London and Manchester is that almost all the Jewish population live in the same two boroughs that are neighbouring areas. There are a few smaller communities that are less frum and slightly further a field. That's why you saw more diversity. Stamford Hill in London on the the other hand would have been more like your regular areas that you film in.
I saw a couple of kids that I teach in the video!

I’m not Jewish, but I work at an Orthodox Jewish school in Cleveland. Our community out here is vibrant and wonderful! You should come out and visit our school. ❤️👩🏻🏫😊
There's a tiny (geographically speaking, considering the boundaries of the eruv) Orthodox community in Norfolk, Virginia. Mostly Chabad, I think. It was always neat to be out on a Friday evening, seeing families walking to shul. I'd grown up around Reform and Conservative communities, and I knew next to nothing about Orthodox beliefs and traditions until the internet became a thing. Good diverse place!
I love the British Jewish community in Manchester and i have some Jewish ancestry hard working people like a lot of us
Thanks for Purim in Manchester better known to most people in Britain as the home of two of the top soccer teams. Soccer is a “ religion” in the Uk !!! Manchester has a great Jewish population too. We’re getting excited as it’s nearly here too. Don’t forget to read the Book of Esther, a vey timely teaching for what is going on today. It’s set in what we call Iran. HaShem is not mentioned by name but he’s there in the background protecting His special Jewish People even when we are unaware. Frieda wishing you a very, Very special Purim with your son, family and great Hasidic community in your city. The Satmar people are very special and May they experience great joy this Purim. Enjoy!!!

Glad to see the UK on your channel, Frieda. Hoping for more! Regarding your remark at the end, Stamford Hill is not as diverse as Manchester. It's purely Chassidic. There are 2 new satellite Chassidic communities in Westcliffe on Sea (Belz dominated afaik) and Canvey Island (mixed, but Satmar dominated afaik). Golders Green is a very Jewish area in London, but it's mostly modern orthodox with a smattering of Chassids.
All of North London is quite Jewish but not Chassidic.
You should come this year for Purim in Stamford hill

In fact, Purim is Purim far ale Yidn af der velt. Miami Beach has a tremendous amount of a Hasidic “snowbirds” or vacationers, plus residents, so Purim here is as Purim in NY etc. also the weather generally is zeyer sheyn!!! קום צום מיאַמי ביטש!!!
I live in Belgium. We have a big Hasidic comunity in Antwerp. First time I saw them was 20 years ago, and it was impressive. The way they dress is really impressive. In Brussels the ortodox jewish community is not very large. I know some jewish, no ortodox. In Europe, many families who are artist from the circus are jewish. In Belgium the Pauwels, who own a very famous circus (Samuel Pauwels) are jewish. Usually, they marry in the circus world and continue the family artist tradition and the jewish religion.

I am from Manchester. I go home often. I have always accepted,mixed with all faiths Purim is beautiful that said where are the females?
I miss the Orthodox community on Miami Beach. I used to live on the border of North Beach and Surfside in a condo in the Jewish area. At the time I was sorely undereducated about Judaism, and it all started with the “Jewish” apartment with the big kitchen and paint covered mezuzahs on the door frames. I really do miss it. 🤍
Good to see a small amount from the UK. I wish I could find a UK Jewish RUclipsr as I lived near a Jewish community and was always frightened to ask questions. I made what I consider a small mistake and someone could have educated me, instead they got cross. I learn better from gentle education than an angry voice.
Strictly Kosher from Manchester was great but I'd like something a bit more educating. Bernadette should have her own RUclips channel. So should the guy with the clothes shop.
I did love Strictly Kosher. I think they can maybe collaborate with us!

I think so. Manchester is more diverse, which makes it more open by definition. It isn't only Hasidim; there are many types of Orthodox Jews.
Purim is pretty fun in London too. However, apart from Stamford Hill (which is a pretty insular community) it's pretty spread out over NW London. There are a few centralised pockets which all have a mix of different jewia people (reform, united, modern orthodox, sephadi etc.) in places like Edgware, Golders Green and now further out 'just' outside London like Borehamwood etc...

It's the active place on Purim from other places
I grew up secular Jewish in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Purim was hardly noticed, let slone celebrated.
I also grew up in Manchester, I left about thirty years ago I returned a couple of years ago for a short visit growing up m, I knew there were ‘Jewish areas’ but I don’t recall going there. It’s interesting what you say about clean streets because sadly that is not the case in most British cities and towns, they get cleaned for a royal/ important spectacle but it’s a noticeable problem including the last time I visited Manchester, so I guess this community do not drop litter and keep there streets clean. If only everyone did.
According to Steve, who shot this, the rules about trash (er, rubbish) on the streets are very strict in the UK and you get fined if you violate the rules. That's all I know! I also know that the streets in Hasidic neighborhoods can sadly be especially bad vis a vis trash.
@@FriedaVizelBrooklyn I can’t speak for Steve’s experience but it must be an anomaly in this area, I live in Oxford which is a nice place but there is a lot of litter, I visit Birmingham a lot and it is very terrible in parts there, same with my visit to Manchester, the rules may be in place but there is a culture of littering and it’s hard for the police to enforce. We are far from being Singapore. Anyway we are getting off topic! Love the videos and appreciate what you do.
@@janispope4295 There’s always litter, but specifically I was discussing fly-tipping with Frieda. It’s not commonplace in the UK to see trash piled high in the streets.

True story, years ago talking to someone in broughpark I could not believe that he was a not a native new Yorker as it turns out chasidem have the same accent if there from BP or from Stanford hill

I live not far from a Jewish community in kew gardens queens,
Visit Florida particularly Palm Beach or Miami . The Jewish population is way more heterogenous and fixated on being more posh.

@@SamSung-fp2vj Don't misundestand me; I live in Wales and I was born in England! It's an American thing. Instead of saying "United Kingdom" I usually hear Americans say "England". If you haven't yet noticed then spend some time watching a few American videos and shows. In the case of this video then Frieda was talking about her editor in Manchester, which is of course in England; but I thanked her anyway because it's so rare to hear an American NOT mix up the "United Kingdom" with "England". When you live in Wales then it grates on the ear to hear people do it. Canadians don't like to be called Americans; or New Zealanders, Australian. We're taught in the UK that Great Britain = Scotland + England + Wales; and that the United Kingdom = Northern Ireland + Great Britain. I wish someone would teach this to our USA friends.
I rarely hear Americans refer to anything Irish, Scottish, Welsh as Britain or UK, they are individualised. "England" is usually washed out to UK etc. As we know the north/ south divide... Manchester only known to exist when blown up! ;-)

They're the ones driving around handing out gifts, usually.
The NYC community is literally the only community I've ever seen where the women don't dress up as a matter of course. There's a tiny community in East Texas, and everyone has the dame theme. Last year it was little house on the Prairie, and I think the year or maybe two years before was masquerade ball, but the women definitely dress up in Manchester for sure. Though it doesn't seem like they're fans of a community theme. 😂
