  • Walking in a city can be like walking on a mine field for someone who is visually impaired. Traditional walking canes help detect obstacles on the ground, but what about obstacles that are higher? They present a different challenge-and one that SmartCane wants to tackle. Using ultrasonic ranging and vibration patterns, SmartCane serves as an enhancement to the classic walking cane by detecting dangling or above-knee-height obstacles. It creates spatial awareness and warns of possible contact with objects-and people-from a safe distance. This short film by Rintu Thomas and produced by Black Ticket Films and The Better India explores this powerful innovation.

As a disabled person myself I've realised that if you want to work in an industry with a lot of innovation, new ideas, and 'outside the box' thinking you should consider a career in developing products, technology, and services for those with physical disabilities,

yup, as crude as it sounds theres a lot of money to be made and its a stable market as the needs/wants dont change much at all.

+NE H yeah, I think they say disabled peoples spending power is one of the highest of any group of people. so there is money to be made, I mean, every time I get a new wheelchair because I want something above the normal basic chair it costs me a couple of thousand every time. Just wish I could spend a bigger chunk of that spending power lol.

Yeah, but there's a small chance your invention will become successful, and you need a team or someone to advertise or help your project.

While walking in a busy street or railway/bus station, it will vibrate again and again, so that can be a problem, any solution for this?

Interesting, but I would rather use human echolocation rather than buying a fancy cane. Just look up the TED Talk by Daniel Kish.
