I feel so weird about this story, and JL by Snyder too. I hopped back onto DC, not having collected comics since I was a kid, when people told me how great Metal was. And they were right, in my opinion, the exagerated parts were great, but the basic somber idea of holding onto hope in the direst of circumstances, as it feels everything just gets worse and worse. How basically hoping for the best, and turning to those you usually wouldn't, ended up being the way to beat the Batman Who Laughs, was perfect. After reading that, I jumped into Rebirth, fell in love with tons of the series: Titans rebirth, Red Hood and the Outlaws rebirth, Batman rebirth, and especially Superman rebirth and Flash rebirth. And having loved all that, things got weird after.... Bendis came to Superman, Dick was Rick, Batman went a little bit downhill... But, Death Metal was coming. I remember getting the Deluxe Edition as soon as I could, opening it....and being utterly confused, because it's in medias res... Looked up necessary reading, and read Snyder JL.... And that was....weird. Maybe I came off Metal's more somber but grounded ending expecting similar, but Snyder's JL run just felt... Weird. Characters talked differently, like Barry became so different from his Rebirth self it was weird, and things were both super serious with the stakes...and then a joke or something would come through, to kind of poke fun at the stakes?... Maybe I read the wrong things first, because I didn't even like Jarro, which people apparently really love... I missed where he even came from, so he was a confusing Batman..fanboy..starfish, that I just would shrug past and keep reading. The J'onn side of it felt odd too, and Hawkgirl..it just all felt really weird, except for the Sunken Earth mini-event, which...was weirdly my favorite part. And so, after slogging through JL Snyder, I finally got back to what I had wanted to read: Death Metal. The sequel to what got me to want to collect comics, and read them on the regular! I started reading and...it was...just as shakey/the same as Snyder's Justice League. It felt, again, like the stakes are high, and rising, but nobody should take it seriously. The world and reality are at risk, but we're going to throw some random jokes in the middle of it too... I get mixing the two, sometimes it can work, but...I don't think one after the other makes sense, in the same scene, said by the same people who were just worried a moment ago. Or atleast, it made reading it a real rough time.. After that, I stopped collecting, and just stuck to old omni's.... Which is ironically fitting, given what the original event did for me. tl;dr: Metal got me into comics. Death Metal made me stop... .... And yet, I'm planning to buy the omnibus anyways. 😅[the Superboy Prime one-off was legit the best part of Death Metal..so good near the end] Maybe rereading it will give me a new perspective then...
Thanks for helping me avoid buying this. Saw the Absolute edition on amazon for only $40 and was tempted. But if its bad enough to make a comic fan drop comics.... sounds like a waste of money.
@@daddy_1453I think it just depends. Personally, I think it was a great reward for someone who read a lot of new 52 and rebirth and even for longtime readers of DC comics. There were so many moments I was so happy to see pay off after reading comics for so long. I will admit the villain or even the crisis is the weakest element but everything around it is so good. That said, I’m talking from the stand point of having read the entire omnibus not just the absolute.
It seems that nowadays any kind of "ElseWorlds" idea coming from creative brainstorming sessions is transformed into a canonical event for the sake of sales when in the past all these kind of ideas were fun for a 3-issue limited series of the "ElseWorlds" line.
These Absolute editions look amazing, but I think DC missed a trick by missing out some important issues. For that reason alone I've gone with the omnibus ( for Dark Nights at least, and I'm sure Death Metal will happen at some point ).
You mention some of five or six of books that lead up to Death Metal but you for got the Infected and Dark Multiverse books. Hopefully DC comics will be able to put together Scott Snyder Justice League omnibus book and also books that you mention in your review. The fact they made a Road to Metal book for Metal, but not a Road to Death Metal book for Death Metal, while generally having more to *actually* need to know about before the event starts, always weirded me out... Hopefully more collected omni's or the like will fill in the info gaps then. 😅

The only thing that I revealed from Snyder’s run on JLA was the Perpetual and Apex Lex story that leads into this. I had to talk about it because people would be completely lost as to who this character is that came out of nowhere. Believe me, plenty of stuff in that run to enjoy.

These are beautifully designed books but as a completist I hold out for the omni, great overview as always🤟🏼🤙🏻
