THANK YOU DAN FOR THE NARRATIVE... your insight adds to the fullness of the video.... The geologic surrounding of the Columbia Plateau Basalts ARE MAGICAL.... PERFECTION!!
Yes, narrative is the way to go, helps us viewers to understand the area its being filmed in, and what the trains are doing, coming from and going to!! Great job on this video!!
You have chosen one of the most isolated and rugged canyons of Oregon to share. The drone photos are magnificent. The last minute shows a large green patch on the West Bank of the canyon known as Oak Springs, and just north of that is the confluence of the White River into the Deschutes. This is a highly historical line from a railroad fan’s perspective, with competing lines (Hill & Harriman) going up opposite sides of the river to get to California first… some brief inclusion of that might have been good, but your approach of “less said” was great given the fantastic perspective a drone gives. This being an old SP&S line adds to the unique history of “The Trunk” all the way to Bend. Great job…. A lot of work to put it together. Thanks!
Thank you Stephen it's one of my all time favorite regions and I always enjoy my time here. Yes indeed the history here is fascinating being pretty much the last well known railroad war.
Your narrations add to the experience of your spectacular video. The terrain there is spectacular. For the first time I noticed that fish ladder (I think) around the falls.
Narration accompanied by graphic titles with background music at the appropriate level is a _very_ nice touch. Well done. The drone aerial photography remains top notch. Nice work. Always a treat to watch 👍🏿
I watch alot of railroad videos and yours are second to none. I personally like no voice over. Your locations, drone photography and choice of music are spectacular. Thanks Dan
I love this video it so cool seeing the same BNSF trains that you would see in the Feather River Canyon also my dad and I loved listening to the music you have in your music we will put your video on everyday just listening to the music
Another great video, Dan! It's nice to wake up in the morning and take a drone's-eye tour of beautiful scenery and trains. Regarding narration, I like the info you provide. I live near Tucson, AZ so the terrain you feature is quite different. It's nice to learn new things. But, less is more! Thanks again!
Great video, Dan! I liked the voiceover. Personally the information I appreciate the most is the location in the current shot and the origin/destination for the trains. Whether it's voiceover or text is fine by me!
I love the new voiceover. You have a nice voice and your pronunciation is very clear. The information you've shared with us in interesting and useful. I think you should keep the narration in your future videos. The two trains are cool, especially the warbonnet and executive MAC in the second lashup. The location is gorgeous as always. I really enjoyed the new style, hopefully you can make this regular. Great job as always Dan, thanks for the Saturday entertainment.
I like what the narration adds to the videos. I work for BNSF and have been in the canyon so it's interesting to see a different perspective. Keep up the great work!
It's always nice to hear a guided voice for any of these videos. I always learn something I didn't know before listening. Many things in this world are ephemeral, but Oregon's geographic beauty seems timeless. Thanks for your videos, and for the enhanced level of information, and keep 'em coming!😀
Just when I think your work can't possibly get any better - you add voice-over! Well done, Dan. And I love it when you get a shot that shows the entire train, or at least most of it. That S curve near the beginning was great.
Yes Dan. THANK YOU FOR THE NARRATIVE. I'm from New Zealand, so I found the narrative both very helpful and informative. I found the Orgeon Trunk Railroading so amazing, that I am currently modelling it in HO(what I can of course😂). Thank You again for your hard work. Just purely amazing.
Well, Dan, you do have a good "announcer's voice" and the voice-over was informative and not over-done.🙂 Having said that, me thinks that the text boxes are essential to those of us who are not familiar with placenames etc. (it really helps to see the spelling so that one can follow along on a map). I was glad that you didn't cut out your signature music.❤ Yeah, with the speeding up of time, it's essential to make the most of every hour - I've had to skip over a lot of videos and other activities, daily, lately (but, never your videos) so, I get it about re-thinking the extra time it takes to do voice-overs.🤔 Love that Deschutes! Hadn't seen those falls and fish ladder before.😲 Thanks for sharing. 🚂Lawrence
Well thanks a lot Lawrence and yes if I continue to do this I'll keep those main location and landmark texts in just for the reasons you said. I will most definitely keep it up with the music! I know to some that is as equally important as the video itself. I'm humbled you enjoy my videos so much! I really strive to make them as professional as I personally can.
I am new to your channel and have been a train lover since I was 10 when I took my first trip ride. Ever since then my Dad and I would visit every train museum we could on vacation. I love your videos especially the "Ultimate Soldier Summit" video, the autumn colors were spectacular. Thank you and I have subscribed and liked, if there was something more than liked I would press that too.
Well thanks so much I am glad you found me and are enjoying! Many folks seem to be discovering my channel recently which is wonderful! That Solider Summit video was a major major check off of my bucket list! For years I had been really wanting an extended trip there and I am so so satisfied with what I captured there! I'm glad you enjoyed it too. Thank you for Subscribing! Your time watching is more than enough!
10/10 ! Amazing aerial videography. Great combo of music and narrative. Just enough narration; otherwise, I would have had no idea where the line was located and the train destinations. America is a beautiful country. Greetings from Nairobi, Kenya.
Well thanks so much I'm humbled you think so highly of it and greetings! So glad you're watching from so far away! I always enjoy hearing from fans in other countries!
First of all the scenery of this train ride was absolutely beautiful and amazing. Second your voice overs were great. Voicing adds a great dimension to your presentation. It makes me want to go back and see more of your work. Keep it up. Be a leader in both stunning views and great camera work. I think this will be productive for you. There are many people doing rail fanning but very few people are doing productive voiceover work. Could you credit your music on your videos because it is very integral to your work. And I liked listening to it. Thank so much.
like the narration!!!!! I know it takes tons of time but because i am not from the area any interesting factual information about the industries or the towns along the way would be fantasticf!!!! You have the best videos around and more interesting facts would put you way over the top!!!! Your camera work is incredible!!! ie... this part of the river has had gold found in it... the sally's restaurant in x town was fantastic! Be sure to buy gas in... x town because no statons for a 100 miles... I really like the train line info... as in pasco to stockton.... or x to fresno... THANKS!!!!
Great vid. We were in Maupin recently checking out the old wagon trails up the river. Theres a book about the original construction of the rail lines up both sides of the river ”Deschutes Railroad Wars” And yeah that gate on the East grade.. According to the locals, Bill Gates and a group of other tycoons bought up the land from that gate south and have built a bunch of self contained survival compounds. Albeit very large and luxurious. Then they gated off the road. Oh well. Great video. Thanks!
Dan, your narrator's voice is excellent, your comments are helpful, and it adds a nice personal touch to hear from you. However, your subtexts have always been nice, and if you don't get into narrating all your videos, that'll be just fine.
The trains and the scenery on the BNSF Oregon Truck Subdivision in the Deschutes River Canyon are magnificent, Dan! I enjoyed your narrative. It is much better than trying to do a quick read of the comments that flash at various places on the screen. I know that adding voice over comments adds to the time in posting a video. You must put together a script based on what we see in the video at a given moment. You cannot voice over by ad-libbing on the fly. I would like to have more voice over in your videos, but I am not the person who has to edit and do the voice over narration. You might want to consider doing voice overs on videos that deserve a voice over based on the content of the train(s) or the locations in each video.
Thank you Thomas I am glad you approve the narration and your feedback is appreciated. I can definitely understand your point of view there. I have always wondered whether or not my texts are even being read since it takes extra effort to keep moving your eyes up there when they appear. This video seems to be performing much better than normal so I'm still considering making it a normal thing.
The narration is okay if it's done occasionally. It's not that you're bad at it, you actually have a pleasant voice, it's just that I love the way you add music to your videos. It's quite relaxing and the narration kills the mood.
I don’t mind the narration but I think your really cornered the market with drone video with background music. Sometimes it’s nice just to sit back, relax, and take in the video rather than focusing on the narration!
It's so weird hearing your voice on RUclips vs in person! 😳🤣🤣😂 As I was reading the messages below I found myself agreeing with many of the thoughts regarding the talking vs reader boards and how it cold be a lot better in the long run to have it in vs not. I personally like the add-on in my opinion, and think you should keep it :-) Finally, is it possible you could do a chase with a train from the south end of the sub and chase it up to at least the Crooked River/P. S. Ogden state park so people can see the trestles, views, and canyon? It would be amazingly awesome if you were able to get an angle of the train from level or even lower (looking up at it) from while it passes over the river, then explore the river itself for debris and artifacts from days gone by. Anyway, keep up the good work, as always!
Ha yeah it's funny how voices can sound different like that huh? Well thanks Mike I agree it probably would help me out in the long run. I am still considering making it a normal thing. We will see. I have some previous videos with shots at Crooked River but I just didn't make it that far South on the line this day. It's a great spot!
I agree with the few that the voice over distracts from getting lost in the scenery and the view of consist slowly moving by accompanied by an excellent music selection. Maybe you could have another version of the same video without the voice work?
Thanks for your feedback! It will just be one or the other. I think even RUclips would flag a video that was double uploaded. They don't like that and see it as someone just trying to get more views in a cheating way.
I do like the narrative, the captions are nice but i miss a lot of them because watching the video. I have one other similar channel i am subscribed to you may know it, "Distant Signal" with Danny Herman
Yeah Danny has an extremely great channel on YT as well, and has even commented on a video or two here on Dan's channel! I love seeing both channels as they each have very unique and beautiful perspectives on the rail lines they present to us.
The narration is a must. Cinematography has always been ‘ top notch ‘ and the voice over gives crucial detail for people like myself who don’t know the areas you film.
What I really enjoy about your videos is the wonderful videography with the relaxing music in the background. I'm voting no on the voiceover. It distracts from getting lost in the scenery and trains. I'm neutral on the video so I'm not giving a thumbs up or a thumbs down. I'm still looking forward to your next video.
Agree that the voice over distracts from getting lost in the scenery and the consist moving by slowly by accompanied by excellent move selection. Maybe you could have another version of the same video without the voice work.
Good video and description. May I suggest adding a little background, for instance, the line is known as the "Inside Gateway," and (please don't beat me up too bad) use the term "consist" instead of "lash-up'" to describe the locomotives. It is akin to calling a rail a long piece of metal.
Hello Dan, thank you for the spectacular and wonderful video, as always! Regarding the voiceover: I liked the additional information! Being a foreigner I am often wondering how to pronounce the names of the towns - now I know :) . Your voice as such is very clear and pleasant to listen to, but please be careful about the volume of the background music. You did it almost perfect, but - being a non-native English speaker (or listener, for that matter) - I had a hard time to understand what you said around 4:57 (they seem to be rolling through a ??? here) as the music was rather dynamic at this point in time. Maybe you can tune down the background music a bit for longer or more complex explanations. Many audio editing software can even lower the background music volume automatically when you are speaking - but this feature needs to be used wisely, not to make the volume feel like a roller coaster ride. But this is really only a minor issue! At the end of the video you said that this voiceover recording is very time intensive ... still I would like to encourage you to produce more of such videos, as I liked the voiceover very much, but not at the price of producing less videos in total - then better switch back to the traditional style. Thanks again!
@@TheRailfanDan Thanks! If we take that example: once I know that the term is "slow order" I think it is self-explanatory enough and Google/Wikipedia can give all the details, so I would not need a longer explanation in your voiceover. But, based on high school and college English I was not able to guess what this could mean, based on what I was listening to, including the music. If you could pay some extra attention that these special "railroad words", as well as town/river/place names, are particularly clear to understand, I would appreciate that. But as I already said in my previous posting, this comment is about making something very close to perfect even better, so no worries! Thanks again!
Personally, I like the addition of the voice-over. Your photography and presentation is superb, but I am not familiar with your primary area of operations. The narrative helps me understand things a bit better. I still like your choice of music, don't get rid of that!
There is private property beyond the gate but I'm unsure how it works. It's a BLM access road so I didn't think it could be gated. I'm not sure the specifics.
Great video… narration was great. Sometimes the verbal narration is more personable to just text. There was more of a story behind the video. Either way you do your videos in the future… all will be great! Thanks
Thank you and yes I am finding that more fans enjoy the voiceover in videos because of that personal touch. I may yet make it a normal thing from here on out.
Scenery fantastic. Not bad for your first narration. Music was very repetitious and a little loud when you were speaking. More references to train speed, etc. needed.Engine dounds needed. Some men even put in fake sounds. It works great. More references to trackside stuff. Pretend that you're speaking to one person. You'd be surprised at how much better it sounds. Many broadcasters can't do it. I spent my life speaking, by the way. July 24, 2023, St. Joseph, MO, USA.
Thanks for the feedback! I didn't have the most ideal microphone at all which made it quite difficult to get the levels right. That will be a thing of the past for the next video.
Narration is good - you can get more information across than just text captions. Who locked the gate south of Maupin? Strange the BLM would block public access on public land like that. Or is it some uptight local property owner who thinks it's their exclusive use road?
Thanks Scott and that is a bonus. It is much easier to get more info across in a quicker timeframe. I'm still not sure exactly about the locked gate but from what I can find is that it's actually owned by the Deschutes Club along with the rest of the road South of that location. They give the BLM access past the gate but not general public except for walking. They don't even allow bikes past it I guess.
@@TheRailfanDan Thanks Dan, private property makes sense about the gate now. Contrary, I have seen many places where ranchers fence off public land and river bank access to keep the public out and / or cattle or sheep in, though.
Dan, you did a good job on the narrative. But given a choice, if I could turn off the narrative, I would. Explanation: If an artist had to include a narrative for his painting, IMO it would take away the mystic of his artistry.
Thank you Ron I hear you! I am still undecided if I will continue to do so or not but so far this video is performing much better than normal. I am thinking the added narration might be due to that.
@TheRailfanDan hey go with the flow. You can always do non-narative videos now and again. Whatever helps the channel. Either way, your ariel videos are the tops, as of now.
Definitely like the voiceover. Adds significant information.
Interesting with the narration, quite a nice new add to the videos that are always impressive
Well thanks a lot!
THANK YOU DAN FOR THE NARRATIVE... your insight adds to the fullness of the video.... The geologic surrounding of the Columbia Plateau Basalts ARE MAGICAL.... PERFECTION!!
Thank you John much appreciated!
Awesome video Dan and the narration is perfectly done my friend!
Thank you my friend!
Yes, narrative is the way to go, helps us viewers to understand the area its being filmed in, and what the trains are doing, coming from and going to!! Great job on this video!!

10 of 10 stars……..Thanks Dan. Fifty years ago all that we would see were SD40-2 in the canyon.the consist of the three units was remarkable 👍. B
Thanks Bruce!
Wow, amazing scenery. Awesome video!
Hey Dan, great video as always. The narration is great. 👍
Thank you!
Thank you for the voice narration. Great job! Please continue the narration. We appreciate your efforts!

I love it!!! Such beautiful videos.
Well thanks a lot Z I'm still considering making it normal. Seems like more are enjoying it than not.
Dan, I’m definitely liking the addition of your narrative to your already excellent and outstanding videos! Just keep them coming
Excellent video as usual. Don’t worry about narrating- you’ll find your voice and it’ll all be good. We’re lucky just to have it at our fingertips.👍🏽
Well thanks a lot I'm humbled you think so!
Thoroughly enjoyed the narration.
Excellent video
Beautiful cinematography! Narration worked out okay. Remember to not over do the narration, but it was good.
Thanks Bill!
I like what the narration adds to the videos. I work for BNSF and have been in the canyon so it's interesting to see a different perspective. Keep up the great work!
I like it with or without narration because your drone work is so good! I love the entire Inside Gateway from Keddie all the way up to the Columbia!
It's always nice to hear a guided voice for any of these videos. I always learn something I didn't know before listening. Many things in this world are ephemeral, but Oregon's geographic beauty seems timeless. Thanks for your videos, and for the enhanced level of information, and keep 'em coming!😀

Had no idea someone like Bill Gates had involvement. Interesting to know, thanks.
Your narration and photography are great. The New Age music, not so much. The sound of a train is the greatest music to my ears.
I too prefer the sound of train but drones do not record audio unfortunately.

Hey @TheRailfanDan. Love your videos! I like the narration too. Curious about this particular stretch....how many trains run through daily?
Thanks so much! Not very many unfortunately. About 4-5 on average in a 24 hour period.
UP owns this track BN maintains it for now.
BN owns this route. The UP owns and leases one small section to the BN. The heavy grade between South Jct. and Madras.

He said "slow order"
@@savage4173 thanks
Thank you for your advice Joe I will keep that in mind! Savage had it correct it was "slow order."
Well thanks that is good feedback. I may yet still continue to do them and yes continuing to do the music is a must! That will always be there.
Do you know why they put a gate across that road?
There is private property beyond the gate but I'm unsure how it works. It's a BLM access road so I didn't think it could be gated. I'm not sure the specifics.
Could you host best rail, art series?
Great video… narration was great. Sometimes the verbal narration is more personable to just text. There was more of a story behind the video.
Either way you do your videos in the future… all will be great!
Thanks
Thank you and yes I am finding that more fans enjoy the voiceover in videos because of that personal touch. I may yet make it a normal thing from here on out.
Prefer just watching trains and listening to the music. Narration not necessary. Great video and drone work.
Another nice video but I'm not a fan of the voiceover.
