PSLE was 14 years ago for me, but the education in Singapore is so good that 14 years later (and I did humanities, mind you), sat in an apartment in London, I immediately mumbled "just find the common denominator?" when I saw the first question. Thank you, Singapore, for how proving "strong academics" has never been hard for me in the UK
This was hilarious to watch as a Singaporean as when I took my PSLE it was a piece of cake so seeing them struggling with the questions I had done makes me want to laugh
I decided to do the questions with them (without a calculator) and was laughing at them all the way. Coming from someone who took the psle 2021 math paper, these questions were nothing to the Helen and Ivan question in the 2021 paper.
Honestly I found the Helen Ivan question rlly easy and fun to solve, its one of my favourite math questions. I remember thinking why does everyone say this is hard when it’s not rlly that hard while looking at the question. I took psle in 2022 and I was so disappointed cos there were no hard questions in the paper that year.
Hey fellow Singaporeans, let's not forget that we were literally trained for years to do these kinds of questions so it seems easy to us. I'm sure many of the older ones (like myself) can no longer do all the PSLE questions of the newer years with the same ease we did when we were actively studying and practicing for it. 😅 Adding on the fact that we probably forgot many of the formulas that we memorised. The trapezium question took me a while to remember that all sides add up to 360 degress and angles between parallel lines add up to 180 degrees which will help so much in solving haha. Let's not be so harsh on the people in the video and good job to them for trying their best!
The first question was so easy I’m surprised that grown people struggle with psle math. For me, only the last few long questions are difficult for me when I did the practice. I’m taking my psle this year EDIT: AIGHT 2023 PSLE MATH IS OVER AND IT WAS EASY AT FIRST BUT THE LAST FEW QUESTIONS WERE HELLA DIFFICULT
Honestly you remove the whole number for the first question and you would be left with 1/9, 1/6 and 1/4. I think from this you can tell which is larger or smaller. For the last question, you can use ratio to solve it. Since the remaining is 1 quarter of the total, equate the remaining to the number of newspaper sold to 1:3. Since at sat to sun, its 2:5 to the remaining, you can treat the remaining as 3 units and the number of newspaper sold from Monday to Sunday as 9 units and you know that sat to sun is 2 units(2:5), 315 is 7 units so the total number of newspaper would be 12 units. 315 divide by 7 to get 1 units which is 45 then times 12 to get 540 which is the answer.
For the first ques, all you have to do is convert them into improper fractions, change the numerator to 70, then the the largest denominator is the smallest, the smallest denominator is the largest.so, 5/4, 1 1/6, 10/9. Last ques, we use model/branching method, but ill try to explain it: 1/4 of the total is equal to 3/5 of the remainder, so multiply 1 by 3, the numerator is 3u and the denominator is 12u. the total units is 12u now, meaning 12u -3u= 9u. Since 2/5 is essentially 2u, 9u-2u =7, meaning the remaining 315=7u. 315 divided by 7 = 45.45= 1u. Had at first=12u, so 45 multiplied by 12 = 540 which is the answer, i think. Coming from someone who is currently studying psle (12), these aren't even the hardest.
I was also 12 last year and this comment was 1 year ago so Sam age yay:) oh yeah last years math pale was too easy too the point where I thought I was doing something wrong💀💀💀
The most difficult part is that you cannot use algebra to solve the questions. Because they have not learnt at that level. They use a method known as model method.
Actually using the box method, which if I am not wrong they learn in P1(around 6-7 years old) they use the modelling method(drawing boxes) which is technically algebra
10/9, 5/4 are can be represented as 1 1/9, 1 1/4.. .. so it's 1 1/9, 1 1/4 and lastly 1 1/6. so remove the 1 whole.. and u see it as 1/9, 1/4, 1/6.. now the question seems easier to the eye . arrange it from small to largest . the bigger the lower number the smaller it is. so 1/9, 1/6, 1/4 or 10/9, 1 1/6, 5/4 that's how I would approach it.. without changing all the denomination to the 36..
Well, I am a Primary 6 here, these questions are actually not that difficult, ngl. The much harder ones literally just make my mind explode from thinking.
Thanks for knowing our pain that we go through now we have to prepare for both O levels or N levels depending on the course your taking if your Express you have O levels if your either N(A) or N(T) your taking N levels and then when you reach JC you take your A levels and then you take the SAT to get to a University And Oh, the 2021 PSLE was BS we had to do a question on the weight of the damn coins! Weight of coins!
The magazine question is kind of a logic question too. If you understand how it works, you can get it super quick without needing much calculation. Basically, you know that he sold more than 315 magazines, so options 3 and 4 are out as they're less than 315. You also know that because he left 1/4 of the original amount, the 3/4 includes the 315 magazines PLUS that 2/5 of the remaining amount, which means that this 3/4 of the original amount has to be more than 315. Since this is MCQ, you can make use of the answers/options provided, which you're left with options 1 (540) and 2 (405). 405 seems suspiciously close to 315 (don't forget that 3/4 of 405 must give you more than 315). At this point, if you have no time, you can just make an educated guess and choose option 1 (540) already. But if you want to confirm, you can just calculate the following: So we start by dividing 405 by 4 then times 3 (getting the 3/4) gives you 303.75 which is less than 315, which means that option 2 (405) is not the answer. Thus, option 1 (540) is the answer. If you're not confident, you can work backwards from the option to confirm (which is also way faster and easier to understand than trying to work foward following the question): 540 - 315 = 225 225 ÷5×3 (getting the 3/5) = 135 Now you know that this 3/5 left is 1/4 of the original amount, so you want to x4 to see if it gives you 540. And it does! So 135 × 4 = 540 Which confirms that option 1 (540) is the correct answer. (If I recall correctly, the MCQ paper of Math (Section A), we're not even allowed to use calculators so you'll have to calculate all these "manually" lol) TLDR: You just need to check if 3/4 of the 4 answer options gives you a number more than 315 since the 3/4 includes the 315 magazines plus the 2/5 of the remaining magazines sold. The setter of the question has kindly set only 1 option to pass this test (option 1, 540) so you don't have to check further haha
Honestly you remove the whole number for the first question and you would be left with 1/9, 1/6 and 1/4. I think from this you can tell which is lager or smaller. For the last question, you can use ratio to solve it. Since the remaining is 1 quarter of the total, equate the remaining to the number of newspaper sold to 1:3. Since at sat to sun, its 2:5 to the remaining, you can treat the remaining as 3 units and the number of newspaper sold from Monday to Sunday as 9 units and you know that sat to sun is 2 units(2:5), 315 is 7 units. So total number of newspaper would be 12 units. 315 divide by 7 to get 1 units which is 45 then times 12 to get 540 which is the answer.
There are many ways to do that qn... The easiest way is to obv press in calculator and convert to decimals, next easiest is to take out the 1 from the other 2 improper fractions to get proper fractions and its just left with 1/9 vs 1/4 vs 1/6 and just see which is bigger. Another way is to just convert everything to decimals in your head, 10/9 is 1.11111, 1 1/6 is 1.16667, 1 1/4 is 1.25.
I'm so sorry as a student currently going to do PSLE soon i was laughing at how you didn't know how to do the first question. I feel smarter all of a sudden??!!?
