As a math tutor for more than 10 years, I can tell you that these questions are far from being the most difficult ones.

The competition doesn't start when the kid is at 12 yr old, it started when the parents get married and they buy a house near to a good primary school.
It is stressful for the whole family, not just the kid.
As for examinations such as PSLE, the purpose is to statistically segregate the batch of students into a normalised population.
Hence the questions are purposely created with a range of difficulties.
If the papers are too easy and every student score above 90%, then it will be impossible to differentiate the better students from the average.
The reason why non Singaporeans find this hard is because most countries basically are teaching a vastly simplified version of college level contents of linear thinking. But Singapore primary school objective especially for maths is to make Singaporean kids be expert in pattern recognition which is both useful academically and in life. Once you get used to finding patterns, many of these questions become very inuititve.
Ya I agree.many of the math qn here is the same strategy of pattern recogniton,after which is normal basic math

As a singaporean student, I would say that these questions are actually easy, I messed up during maths PSLE in the perimeter question when I was rushing against time, getting an AL3, really sad... When I went home, I immediately wrote down the question I memorised and tried to solve again, done in 5 minutes.

Omg the perimeter question confused me too. I managed to get the answer in my head at the last second but I couldn’t erase my answer and write down the correct one so I lost marks for that. T-T

The most important advice for any students taking PSLE Math is... "always double check your answers"
And study before taking the exam lol. Kinda regret not studying before taking the psle . Definitely got lower than what I could achieve

PSLE is really a weird thing because I remember not being too phased by it at 12, but when I went to tutor my younger cousins when I was much older it was much more difficult than I remembered it to be. I think the concepts itself are pretty self-explanatory, but the idea of problem solving is something that higher math doesn't necessarily touch on. For example, the concepts taught in PSLE Math are fairly elementary, but the questions are very application based, while O/N's Math has so many concepts, yet the questions are pretty bog-standard.
I think the problem-solving aspect is pretty much what kills a lot of the students at 12 - modelling, algebra, geometry is all easy but a lot of them crumble under the questions. The thing about PSLE is that it lends itself a lot to nature over nurture IMO; the simplicity of the concepts make it so that the differentiator for students is actually natural analytical ability and inclination to thinking mathematically. There are a lot of people I know that didn't do well in PSLE Math but did well in higher level Math, and it wasn't due to lack of effort for sure.
The syllabus now is being accelerated every year. What we learnt and what they are learning is very very different.
Actually model drawing and heuristics have already existed since the 80s. If u manage to grab hold of PSLE Mathbpapers in the 80s, u will realise the level of difficulty then, can match what we see today
PSLE Math is not as difficult as it is perceived to be. That said, a PSLE Math paper or PSLE in general does not define the worth of a student in the future. A student who did not do well in PSLE could always catch up in O Levels and A Levels
PSLE assists students who do well to stream to elite schools. However, if a student who is allocated to a secondary school works hard and smart in his secondary and JC journey, he can also have an equal chance of doing well in the future

@@benjaminyh6252 It is really about resources and environment though. Now that they're mixing classes between streams it will probably become less prevalent, but I remember being more inclined to work harder and having better resources as the people around me weren't necessarily smarter but were more willing to put in the work because I went to a slightly over average neighbourhood school, and that would bleed over naturally. It's not even elite schools at this point; there are differences between middle-of-the-pack neighbourhood schools and the (then-188) T-score neighbourhood schools. I would argue the equal chance of doing well makes sense in theory, but in practice, the connections you make in those schools are HUGE differences that even leak into adult life.
In terms of PSLE difficulty, the papers I would contend are definitely harder, but also at the same time, the level of students are definitely higher. We're seeing the effects of the normalisation of tuition, education policy and enhanced specific programmes make its mark on our young ones. Thus relatively, students will generally find it harder because at that age (and a lot of people don't grow out of it as well tbh) it's not about how well you do, it's about how well you do compared to your peers. Now that I look at it now, PSLE Math at the time was not difficult, but I perceived it as such because I thought getting 100% was the norm, which it seemed to kinda be due to the friends I had around me, and I wasn't getting that, even though I was getting extremely respectable scores.

I TOOK THAT PAPER. and i found the semicircle question easy. it was one of the algebra ones that tripped me up :')

As a student taking PSLE this year, the dot question is pretty easy. you have to minus the corners first and then divide by six sides. last step is plus two for the corners.

The maths psle papers are hell😂💀 I really can't passed them if it wasn't for this one science teacher who's really good at teaching maths teaches me maths for one year in primary 6, his method, his determination and his believe in me that I can pass is so touching that even though he was in hospital when I took the maths psle, he called me to give me encouragement on the morning before I took my math psle, I'm still so thankful to that teacher

As a Singaporean, I can only say that the time has come so far that things are so much advanced than when we were before. I remembered algebra was only taught in secondary school. Btw even kindergarten is touching on subjects which were only taught in primary school previously. E.g photosynthesis was taught as subject science in primary four (10years old)for me, but during the time when i was working as support staff at MOE kindergarten i was shocked to realise they are already learning it at K2(6years old).
PSLE problems evolve through the decades. These types of problems that you were doing used to be for secondary 3 when i was still a student.

For those who are curious abt the last question:
132 divided by 3=44
137-132=5
5-3=2(extra A not enough to make a set)
3=1 more set
44+1=45sets
ABA=2A and 1B=3letters
45 times 5=225
225+3=228
228+1=229
the reason the answer is not 228 is because after the last A in the pattern, it is still possible to have another letter that is not A. In that case that letter is the C behind the last A, which allows the answer to be 229 instead of 228.
"AABAC" is a set, take away the initial "ABAC", you have 135 As. For every set, there is 3 As, but 5 letters total. So there is a total of 135 / 3 = 45 sets. 45 sets is 45 x 5 = 225 letters. Add in the initial "ABAC". 229 letters.

Science the most difficult for me
I taken mine in 1989. I felt that the questions had gotten more trickier in the way being asked, especially for math which I noticed some years back when I saw a question my friend's kid was trying to do during a gathering at their house.

Those questions are meant to sift out the elite students so they have higher grades to apply to elite schools
I’m taking Psle this year. Although I did quite well for my prelim (not for science) , I’m still quite concerned whether I would really do well like I did for my prelim. Good luck to those taking psle this year, it may be stressful and all but in the end all of it would be worth it. Hope those taking psle will achieve your expected score and go to the secondary school you want to go. Don’t forget to do your September holiday homework too💀

As a kid who took this paper like 4 years ago, the question at 4:59 isnt all that bad... Honestly we just got used to it. I heard Singapore's syllabus in general tends to be much faster than other countries so
Also I actually did not go to cram school. Most parents do tend to send them to cram school or cram classes in the form of tution centres like stalford or kumon.

PSLE is crazy lol. I never knew how crazy our standards were until I read about the S.A.T and wondering why it was so easy... Then I look at Gaokao in China or Korea's university exams and terrified at sitting in a exam hall for over 10 hours. Anyway, it seems hard to Ghib because you don't get taught the tricks to handle the questions. Most students are taught in a logical way to solve the problems. We are taught efficient ways to do times table, calculations. Modeling is also one of them. Btw, algebra only became more prominent in recent years. It used to be taught at secondary school level. I remember because I had no algebra questions for my paper. Instead, I had to do this Guess and Check method for questions like "there are 144 legs. How many chickens and cows are there?" because my teacher told me it was to teach us reasoning skills to use in algebra.

At my age they did teach algebra at p6, but then for most word problems you can get by with modelling. Only the pro kids use algebra to solve

Doing PSLE questions at 12 years old is very different from tackling them from an adult's perspective 😅.. I really hated Maths as a kid!
I don't recall it to be this difficult back in my days... I took my PSLE in 2005. I recalled the high expectation, the peers pressure, the insufficient sleep from homework, going for tuition, attending CCA. And that was just the start, it went on to O level, A level, etc. I did decent in my PSLE to progress, not great as compared to my peers. Did it matter 20 years later? No. But what it did, it gave me many years of inferiority complex. The PSLE questions now look harder than I remembered. Personally, I don't agree with this "world class" education we are adopting. Why are we giving the kids so much pressure? It doesn't start at 12 years old. The years of anxiety and pressure leading to PSLE.

As a 12 year old student taking PSLE this year, I will say that these questions are Low-Key some of the easier ones. The real difficulty kicks in at Paper 2

I'm a marine engineer. I self taught my son PSLE Maths. Me alone no tutor. He got 93.5% for SA2 Pei Chun Pri 2018. Sheer hard work and lots of patience. 😊
I have witnessed kids collapsing during psle, esp during math paper. When examiner announced "you have 15 min left"...the look in some kids' eyes. No joke.
I took PSLE in 1983 😂 I didn’t have to study for any test or exam but did well enough to get into SAP school. In secondary school and all throughout I was self motivated and enjoyed learning new things at school. Now my 10 yo niece tells me she hates school 😮 and I feel sad for all the pressure and tuition she has to go through. I don’t think I would have enjoyed school. Having said this, I appreciate all the high standards set in Singapore. I have lived in a western country for 15 years now and I shake my head at the lack of intelligence and ability to take pressure and work hard in the people of this country. And the education system just keeps getting worse in the 15 years I have lived here - the young ppl cannot write properly even though English is their first language and cannot do basics Maths even after finishing high school. Don’t take your Singapore education and work ethics for granted, you will excel anywhere in the world because you are the employee that many companies crave for but cannot find!

Those questions didn't seem as difficult as the ones I taught my kids when they were younger. Some questions needed to use modelling to solve them. 😅
I remembered my kids' questions were much tougher. The modelling really kills me as I did not learn that in school.

I took mine in early 70s. Then, we were supposed to select 5 secondary schools of our choice and we will be given the results of which sec school we were finally got to attend based on PSLE results. The PSLE scores were not revealed to us.

Definitely did not miss those PSLE questions, I remember just struggling to get above 60 for math in Primary 4, until math just suddenly made sense for me 1 day and i got an A* on the Math paper in the end, one of the questions that seem counterintuitive to me now was those assumption questions with 20 cent and 50 cent coins, but this truly brought back memories.
I am a parent now who did badly in maths during my school days, the only topic I could grasp well is money. Yet I could retire financially secure at 38 years old. One failed subject don’t define your future, it’s your mind, heart and hands that shape your future life! :)

That trapezium question got me. Maybe because my math logic skills are rusty. I remember PSLE math being a hell lot easier back then than expected after experiencing all the hellish workbooks, prelim and practice PSLE papers. Almost full marks according to my teacher.
I've taken PSLE of year 2022. It was honestly manageable. But some questions can truly be FRUSTRATING.

Wah, how less difficult was PSLE in your batch? Sec 2 already die from PSLE 2021, I remember I sat for the 2021 math psle paper (yes, the one with helen and ivan) and I remember everybody was crying sial 💀
Most of us either failed or got around AL 6 (Around C or D in the old system) and uhh yeah I think most of the people from the 2021 PSLE batch got traumatised by the paper,, not sure why the Sec 1s that sat for the 2022 paper complained it was hard though, it didn't look that bad.

I took my PSLE back in 1992 and even back then, it was insanely difficult. I remember this cos when i took my math paper, i was surrounded by the top Pri. 6 students, and they ALL started crying when the time limit was up. I actually couldn't finish the paper, and thought to myself... IMDEAD :D
Thankfully and surprisingly, i did relatively well and made it into a secondary school of my choice :)

I remember the top students in my school cried when they got their psle results many years ago lol. They literally cried , complaining their results was too low when they got 240-260. Meanwhile I got 177 :/

As a Singaporean taking his exam soon, I think that those qns are relatively easy and I know it from reading the qns. And yes I do go to math tuition which really helped me
as a singaporean, i can confirm i struggled the most with math for psle. and i still don’t get math to this day
Did you do better for Arts subjects, what they call the Humanities? I was in the Science stream till O levels. Liberation Day came when I moved to the Arts stream for A levels, and did much better. Sometimes it’s just the natural aptitude that makes a difference.

@@uarmysoob perhaps you are naturally more inclined towards the more right-brained subjects like Lit, that allow some self-expression, ie expressing your views, rather than purely logical subjects like math and science. That’s why I dropped these subjects after O levels and ended up doing only Arts subjects at the uni. It’s good to recognise what you’re naturally good at and what will always be a struggle for you. Our brains are not all wired the same way.
I think most are fine but there'll always be a few very difficult ones that don't seem to make sense even to an adult haha.
Everyone has missed out on what learning and education is all about . The joy of learning has to be nurtured without the need to conform to meet expectations but to realise one’s innate potential . A certain push factor is essential .

Surprisingly these questions were quite simple to me. And this is coming from someone who didn’t even get 150 on her PSLE.
To be fair, I did study harder in secondary school and I finally understood some of the math concepts that I previously just never grasped before. That's the one thing I really hated about math, all the concepts that went flying over my head for the longest time.
But math in secondary school is very different from primary school math
As a Singaporean student, looking back now i think psle is just like your normal weekly practice paper , as long as you work hard and persevere you will have no problems with getting a good grade
Sooo for the p6s this year study hard!! The best part is after plse my teachers let us do anything like we played table tennis and uno everyday in class ...
I've returned most of my Primary School education to my all my teachers. It has been more than 30 years ago. These questions in the video would have sent me to panic mode if I were to take my PSLE once again.

took PSLE back in 2017. as a top 3% in the cohort with 264+3 (3 for higher chinese distinction), i would like to express how much effort i’ve put in to get that score lmao.
first off it’s legit consistency. since P1 you’ve got to make sure you’re always scoring one of the better ones in your class and when there is streaming by results, at least the top 3 classes. keeping up with HW and ensuring almost full attention in class is also a must, esp when you’re p6. at the start of p5 you’ve got to start planning, because 2 years isn’t a lot of time if you start counting the days you need for each topics of each subject.
in p5 i didn’t do too great in the class, only considered average (but ofc the higher end in the school since i’m in the 3rd class)
then when i reach p6, that was when i legit started grinding. i’ve completed all the PSLE past year papers and all other school papers, doing them consistently since around may onwards. before that apart from school work i do notes and revision every night.
other than that, i halted my basketball trainings, ballet piano and art lessons just to focus on PSLE.
because i had no tuition i had to put in even more work myself, recalling having my parents even prepare more nutritious food that was said to benefit the brain 💀 also had myself writing one essay per day for english since i wasn’t doing too great for that subject.
i started counting down the days to PSLE since the start of p6, was rly q stressed throughout due to high expectations from my family and relatives. as we all know, parents compare us to the rest of the kids. the unfortunate thing is that most of my relatives’ kids are my age so the comparison is insane.
ofc still had abit of fun here and there by secretly playing phone games with my cousin and going out to ball with my friends, but that’s it.
the stress was q bad, recalling crying few days before PSLE because i couldn’t do some math questions and also not being able to sleep at all the night before papers
now i’m 18 and currently a month away from A levels, i would say i’m also rly stressed and highkey hates the education system. okay goodbye gotta study

as a 2023 psle student.....i've done those papers. that orange book is literally the same psle booklet as the one under my desk- so proud as a singaporean 12 year old

Singapore's focus on education is not so crazy when you think about it.
Singapore as a country has no other thing going for them beside their human capital. They are tiny city state with no natural resources. Their strategic location can be easily negated without high quality human capital. They are surrounded by huge countries with huge populations.
The tiny Singaporean population must be educated to a high degree to compete with the hundreds of millions strong populations of their neighbors.
Plus, Thailand actually started to cut across the Isthmus of Kra, which will take away so much sea traffic from SG’s port when (if) completed. From what I read the Thai King stopped the works for political reasons. Another reason why we can’t depend on our geographical location.
When my daughter was gonna have her PSLE and it felt that it’s the parents that have to go through the PSLE.. but it’s a good thing for their questions as there are many scenario based type of questions which are more applicable to everyday life.. it’s not easy no doubt..

I have unlocked repressed memories from 10 years ago. I hated the math exams. I was always more of a languages girl. Got A for English and B Mother Tongue. Then Science is average but Math is the worst. I got a D and expected to fail. Again, this was 10 years ago so imagine the difference in the questions

psle is one of the most important things in singapore education and determines whether you go to secondary school or not

honestly, O lvls are easier in relative to age. You just need to study and could get a decent grade of at least a B3, while in PSLE you do need to have full understanding of the problem you are dealing with and apply your reasonings and logic accurately. Don't forget that a B3 in o levels is only 65%, A1 or the highest grade attainable only at 75% while in PSLE a B is 70% and A* above 90%

The dots question is pretty easy. You need to realize that each vertex has a dot, and everything else is on an edge. There are 6 edges. So when where are 96 dots, each edge (minus the vertexes) has (96-6)/6 = 15 dots. Then add back 2 dots (because each edge ends on a vertex) for 17.
I realised how poor of a problem solver I was in Math back then. The pattern recognition problems were easy for me 2 decades later, but fractions and algebraic ones still stump me a lot.
As someone who took PSLE last year, it was definitely very stressful. I only got AL3 in math, it wasn't that difficult but I was probably careless.
Also, for the MCQ questions, you cannot use a calculator.
AL1 is the highest score, 90 marks and above. AL2 is 85-89, AL 3 is 80-84. To those taking PSLE this year: GOOD LUCK To those who also have higher mother tongue: I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK. You need it.

I remember I took my PSLE during 2006
And I know they always like to give the hardest question with a 6 marks ( including working must be shown )
And while a lot of us left that question blank and it need quite a lot of timing to answer
I think the toughest maths questions at pri6 level will be those used for NUS High's DSA selection exam
The most hard and stressful one is from Korea.

Try Maths Olympiad questions for the challenge which average adult's score is around 50% or below.

Mensa IQ tests are not quantitative or language based, to avoid cultural bias.
By the way PSLE have specially designed exams for slower learners, called foundational subjects. They just are simpler, more tame versions of the standard papers.
Ghib should do another video where he compiles the most heinous ones into one paper. But yeah by time we take the paper we've done so many questions from past exams that you don't really need to think, you already know how to solve it thru sheer repetition.
