Honestly the best part about your content is, how excited you are about the art you cover. Your love for art is highly contagious so please just cover the stuff you find interesting, I will watch it for sure!
honestly!!! I love art and history but I constantly struggle to find somewhere I can learning about it because everyone I’ve watched talks about art and history sounds like they are being forced to teach or are un-interested in the topic, but this guy has the most monotone voice, yet he sounds so much more excited to be talking about art then anyone I’ve seen before
Exactly Such a lovely 😊 channel ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 10/10 -OY3AH! Stellar
Claude Seignolle in his book _Les Evangiles du Diable_ tells a story about five men who were about to split another bottle in the time of the Carnival. They took their masks off to drink... but suddenly there were only four of them. They put their masks back on -- and then they were five again!
They immediately sobered up and ran away supposing the fifth party to be the Devil himself.
Probably the most surreal story about masks I ever heard.
That sounds so interesting but I cannot find anything on it in English. Any help?
@@brendanjoyce645 Apparently there had never been any English translation (the book itself came out in 1967). A pity, all the more so that several books of Seignolle's fiction were translated in the late 1980s. _Les Evangiles_ is a collection of essays about French folk-tales, rituals and legends.
I’ve had a fascination with masks since I came across the ability to create and decorate my own. To the point I’ve got a collection of self made and expensive ones that simply make me feel like someone else while I wear them
Same
@@superstar5123 for liking to wear masks in my own home and without harming others? What a weird thing to need therapy for
@@superstar5123 You’re the one telling me to go to therapy for no reason
I have been fascinated with art of many forms my whole life but as time goes on I've struggled more and more with authentic expression. Do you have any suggestions on where to start with making masks? I would like to try something easy to start but would really enjoy the process of making something more complicated with some experience. I still have a mask I made as a kid but completely forgot how I made it. The idea of expressing different states or feelings or taking on the identity of another character in order to more authentically express concepts interests me.
@@musicman9901 paper mache worked for me, though I did start off with painting the premade masks from Joanne fabric and Michael’s
a part two would be great. there are so many interesting masks to draw from! i would definitely suggest yup'ik/chup'ik and sanxingdui bronze masks
In acting school we were trained intensively in Balinese mask by a Balinese mask maker and performer who had been the apprentice to world renowned master Per Brahe. We were taught to treat each mask as though it is a real person. Furthermore, we were taught to let the mask itself behave rather than to try and “act” or “create” from our own imaginations. They say that if you mistreat the masks, they can cast curses. The things I experienced wearing those things are impossible to describe.
If you have the money and time for it, you can visit Bali and take a workshop with Per Brahe at his theater school.
When you showed the villagers from papua new guinne speaking with that beautiful chant i really thought it was part of some spiritual ceremony , or party and it zooms out and its just two people having a regular conversation 😂 that is such an amazing language, culture is so cool.
As someone who grew up obsessed with LoZ: Majora's Mask, today I find it really interesting how important the idea of masks is to Japanese culture as well as many cultures in the world. It's a very vague topic that can be explored in so many ways since masks are used for so many reasons, but always hiding the face of the wearer regardless of context. There's a sense of mystery, danger, and curiosity, and sometimes playfulness that challenges both the viewers and the wearer. You could say that a mask is spiritual, you could say it's a tool, you could say it's an accessory. I dunno just scattering my thoughts but I find it all very interesting.
I did my final projects in grad school on masks and Masquerade! Ive always been fascinated by Mardi Gras masks and the culture around there. I love this topic and I love your insight!
For the Aztecs, sure, that SOUNDS like a lot of sacrifices, and it is, but it's worth pointing out that capturing people to eventually sacrifice was kind of the whole method of warfare, they weren't going out there to kill all the enemy dudes, that'd be uncouth and wasteful.
I personally like masks cause I feel like expressions aren’t a natural part of my personality- just a language I choose to add into it so people understand better. It feels a lot more genuine for me to have a static expression, given inflection alone can carry the same level of detail. One day I’ll craft my pinnacle mask to represent myself.
I’d love to see a part 2! It’s such an interesting subject to learn about, with all these different cultures worldwide. Love all your videos Dweller!
I absolutely love the Papuan New Guinea mud masks 🎭 I like how they add bamboo to their hands, the style they use to create each one. It's such a well created cultural creation.
Every time I learn something new about the culture and practices of the Aztec empire, I get more and more terrified of it.
I have a mask collection that I keep in the main floor bathroom, my favourite is a papier mache Caribbean Carnival mask from Dominican Republic. Guests always remark at how creepy it is to be watched by so many eyes in the toilet and some of the kids are scared to go in there alone 😘 Ive been fascinated by masks for years too. The Mexican skull masks were so interesting for the inlay of turquoise, added features and Hollywood smiles. Thanks for sharing
What a unique video about one of the coolest cultural topics, if you ever make a part two, I HIGHLY recommend checking out the Moretta Visard, a black mask made to conceal a woman's identity which could only be kept on her face through a bit!
I swear you are the only person who makes video essays that I actually like.
Maybe for Masks part two, you could include some more individual mask makers. Some very personal, intimate artists and their reasoning for Mask making.
as an anthropology student i find things like this to be so extremely interesting. when you started talking about papua new guinea i got so excited, such a cool place full of interesting people
Always cool to see masks from different cultures and learn a bit about how and why they're made. Thanks for making this!
Love your channel and the artist spotlight
Fantastic video, great attention to accuracy in regards to the theravada buddhism segment. I never hear it mentioned in western videos, so it shows you do your homework
I'm currently working on a mixed-media series which include masked figures of various backgrounds, and the mask as a metaphor for veiled intentions - and your fantastic video has served as a source of knowledge and inspiration for me to continue with the pieces! Great vid, thanks as always!
Hey your video is really interesting about masks. It really shows how deep other cultures are.
Just now in Germany we have "Fasching/Fasnet" and there are many different types or kind of mask.
Would recommend to put it one your Part 2 :)
Kristen Egan and Mothmeister are some great modern-day maskmakers! I find they're so fun to use as drawing inspiration, to take a mask and invent its character. I went to sketch some at the Quai Branly Museum once, there are tons of them there. Unfortunately I was having a bad day and ending up having psychotic episode there late at night surrounded by all these twisty melted masks but that was also ... an experience. My old Bionicles will have to do for sketching material for now. I did use these incredible Papua New Guinean masks as a reference for a myth illustration for Inktober though! They are incredible, like melted faces made out of wood. And incidentally even more recently I was looking into Aztec (actually Mayan) masks and teeth for another "Inktober" (Ink-anuary?) myth from there, because it would seem they were such good dentists they could inlay gemstones into their teeth! The myth in question however was about twins posing as dentists to steal a giant's emerald teeth (they were not such great dentists). Anyway, fantastic video as always! Never stop! Masks are such a fascinating topic ...
This is a topic I've been fascinated with since I can remember and until now haven't seen anyone go into detail on it. Thank you thank you thank you
Absolutely love your videos! I would love to see a video on David Lynch’s art, if you ever get a chance. 💗
I really loved this video! I feel like artforms such as masks and clothing/costume tend to get neglected, so I was very happy watching this :) I'd love if you did another mask video, and any other "alternative" artforms as well!
New viewer here and I must say, awesome video! You should check out the masks of Sri Lanka and the rituals associated with them in a part 2!
I have always loved masks! I really hope you do a part two. You can delve into Venetian masks, Victorian Death Masks, and not to mention all of the different ones that are throughout Asia that weren't mentioned in this video! I absolutely love your channel, keep up the good work
make a part 2, this was a lot of fun to watch!
I could watch hours of this. I'm studying performance art at University and seeing these kind of cultural rituals and practices is so fascinating
I collect mainly halloween and gas masks but I want nothing more than some cool historical masks. I have a couple already but they're more so the type you hang on the wall than wear.
please do Balinese masks, they have interesting design and stories too
Hey that's me! Cheers for the feature!
As a fellow artist, your channel and videos are an amazing source of inspiration. Thank you for sharing your passion and research with us!
I find all your videos fascinating, and I would love to see another video on masks. No matter what channel I'm watching, my favourite videos are always the ones where the content creator is talking about a subject that they are interested in...I love to hear the enthusiasm in someone's voice when they're talking about something they have a particular interest in or affection for. That enthusiasm makes me feel more engaged with the video.
I just discovered this channel and have been binge watching. I love learning more about the artists and discovering new creatives. I would love to see a video about the art of Elif Varol Ergen. Amazing channel!
Hope you expand into discussing Buddhism-your coverage of difficult concepts is unmatched!
Even though they're not exactly what I'd call "foreign", I'm surprised you didn't mention the theatrical tragedy and comedy masks of Greece or the plague doctor masks of Europe.
Loved this video!!! i think the Kachina masks/regalia from the Hopi nation here in North America are very very cool
You might want to consider talking about moretta masks for part two!
This video opened my mind to me new found love of art history and art within religion!! Thank you for sharing! I hope for a part2!!!
I loved this video! Well done!
Should you decide to make a second video on the subject, perhaps you could take a look at North American indigenous folks of the US and Canada? Learning about the traditional masks and mask making done by the Inuit and related cultures along with that of the Native American Indian tribes would be fascinating!!!
I think that you covered masks around the world is awesome. I've always had a fascination with masks as well. You should definitely cover vejigante masks from Puerto Rico if you do a part 2.
I knew someone else would suggest it too🙌 also boricua!
I forgot about your vids and now I’ve got a few to catch up on so hyped I love your content it inspires me to work on my art so damn much
If you ever make a part 2, i suggest including the masks that are used during the traditional carnival of cities like Mamoiada or Ottana in Sardinia, Italy.
They are grotesque wooden masks that have different names and characteristics based on the type of character they represent, for example, during the carnival of Ottana, there's a group of people with masks similar to cattles named "boes" that fight against the people wearing masks similar to human faces named "merdules". This fight means to represent the costant conflict between man and nature.
I really hope you enclude this in your next video.
(excuse me for any mistakes i made writing this, i do not speak english as my first language)
I would love a part 2
If you’re going to make a part to please look into Vejigantes masks from my native Puerto Rico and the masks of many north American indigenous nations like the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw and the Nunivak cup’ig. Amazing video btw, really loved it a lot.
part two* sorry my spelling was off 😅
Would love a Part 2 on masks around the world. (Also, I don't know if you are aware of the original album art for Relics by Pink Floyd, which I'd love to know wherefrom that mask originated. For some reason a new cover was made for that album, which was disappointing.)
That could be an interesting rabbit hole, will have to look more into that!
More of this, yes! As always I love all the different directions your interests go. Somehow everything you present opens a new door.
As an artist and art aficionado..i love masks and even have found a few at second hand stores .. I eas told they were German and old. I too have made my own masks periodically in life and find it was very therapeutic and helped heal.me with what i was going thru
I truly believe spirit moves thru everything
Wonderful installment - looking forward to part 2! Your audience shares and enjoys your interests - go boldly with your passions! We will listen!
The Wren Boys of Ireland would be an interesting look.
Happy New Year Matt, this was a fascinating video,I have a long love of them myself, and have a small collection of antique Noh Masks,Back in the day I ran a small business making masks in porecelain which I would airbrush and embelish and mount onto wodden panels so they became wall art,but I also made masks in papier mache, that could be worn, and also ran mask making workshops, masks often feature in my art now,i love masks from other cultures and the myths and stories they represent.I lived in Japan for a time and saw Noh Theatre. In the 80's there was a stunning pruduction at the National Theatre of "The Orestia" an acient greek play and the entire cast wore beautufuly made full head covering masks. So glad your first video of 2023 is something you really love yourself,a part two would be amazing maybe looking at masks in art and art history as many artists in history painted people in masks and many artists do today, and also masks were used and are use in performance art.And of course in Venice with the maseqerade parade that happens each year.there are famous masks like beautiful gold mask of Tutenkhamun too,and the strange practice of death masks being cast.I loved this video because I love masks too,you put so much into your videos and they are so informative and it's obvious that as an artist yourself, you come from that perspective. Can't wait to see the next video, but this one was a welcome change and a good first video of the new year.(matt) P.s there is a great bok on Masks you might really like "The Power Of Masks" by Walter Van Beirendoc & Kaat Debo published by Lanoo Pubishing.
Excellent video! I love the variety of things you talk about, and the passion with which you do it. Part two would be a real treat!!
You shoud check the masks on "La fiesta de la tirana" in the north of Chile ("party of the tyrant" would be in english ii think)
I love tribal art it's beautiful especially tribal masks from really any culture (edit: the Aztec skull masks might be my favorite)
Id absolutely love a part 2! You are very passionate about covering ur subjects and its very nice to watch your videos. Since this video covered a lot of East-Asian and African masks, maybe the part 2 could show some interesting masks from Scandinavia, Europe, Siberia, and of course also northern Native American masks and totems! Hawaii has also a rich history in masks and similar items, as do Aboriginal tribes in Australia. Some pre medieval era European masks are quite interesting, as of course also the more utilitarian masks that came later during the plague, as well as religious masks (like the Spanish capirote catholic traditions)
I smashed the like before the pop up ad even finished, knew id love this one 🔥
I would love more mask videos!
I've always been obsessed with masks i would love to see a part 2 to this
Dude, this is so inspiring. Thank you so much for this wonderful content, cheers from Brazil
Hey man thanks for covering these fantastic artists over the years i hope all is well on your side
This is absolutely incredible content, dude! I too have always been drawn to masks and their meanings. As a hobby I like to research the artwork, stories and any music of ancient people, so this is truly fascinating to me! Thanks very much for sharing this with us. I hope everyone is doing well and having a great day.
I’m glad I found this channel it’s hard to find a good channel that discuss arts of all kinds and do it very detailed !!! I’ll definitely watch these as a sort of inspiration (I do art as well)
Please make another Mayan jade masks are incredibly beautiful
I’ve recently seen a couple of shows talking about death masks. They are fascinating. They used to do those on people like presidents, artists and pretty much anyone that the family wanted to do.
Would love to see you cover Simon Stålenhag.
I love it! I would love to hear about more art forms on this channel.
Ya boy being recognized and getting a nord vpn add? Justice.
Thank you so so much, as always, for your beautiful and educational content! We can tell you pour your soul in each and every one of your videos. My suggestion for part two would be..ancient greek masks, used for theatre and rituals! Thank you, again.
That was intensely fascinating, I'd love you to do a second video! 👍
Great vid! Please make a part 2.
I really enjoyed this essay so i'd love to watch a part two!
This is such an interesting topic and presented so well... I actually would like to see part 2 of these different kind of primitive historic masks and what purpose the serve to that particular culture.... Great video!
What a fascinating video I've always loved masks and spent a lot of time drawing and designing but never really making till last year it was wonderful hearing your passion for art as a whole in a subject I too personally always loved.
When I was a kid I had a book about masks from around the world and it had cardboard replicas of each one you could punch out and try for your self and explanations of what country or culture each was from what they were used for etc, and I had the exact reaction you did as a 5 or 6 year old, they were creepy as hell, but sooooo fascinating! Love that you made this video and I am now going online to see if I can’t find that book for my little boys so they can experience the same wonder!
Just looked it up, it was called The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Masks. My mother has no great love for art so God knows how we came to have it but maybe that is a little seed of my love for art!
would love to see more of these!
Absolutely fascinating video. So informative and immensely enjoyable. There is something so intriguing and beautiful yet uncanny and terrifying about masks. Thank you for this 💗
I would love to see a part two video! Nice work! ❤
I found this incredibly interesting and masks have always been something I've been interested in. I'd definitely love a second video about them
Great video and would love a part 2
Masks are one of my own random interests, so I'd definitely love a part two! I enjoyed this video a lot.
Great vid, would love to see more on general topics like this
I love to make masks its so fun the thing that got me into masks was the legend of zelda majoras mask it is such a good game and it still inspires me to this day.
That Kwuya Gblen-gbe mask though, it looks amazing! who the whole outfit with the stilts jsut... wow.
i would LOVE to collect or even just draw some of these masks. but i know jack-shit about any of these cultures so in doing so might be just straight up cultural aproporiation.
Thanks so much for making this, i really enjoyed it, i would love to see a part 2. not even just about religious/ceremonial masks but more social ones like those of the Carnival or venice, like the Moretta/Servetta muta, a mask worn by women looking for sutors based off the Vizard mask to keep a woman from sunburn/looking pale (meaning she never went outside or worked thus meaning she was rich) its so facinating! you've got me going down the mask rabbit hole!
Great video and looking forward to part two.
Thanks so much Charlie! I'm sure there will be a part 2 before end of the year 😊
Man I learned something new today, I never knew this about the tribes of Papua New Guinea. And their masks and protective spirit outfits are so cool and creative, imagine that coming at you out of the jungle. I think anyone would shit their pants regardless of where they live.
Noh Masks are cool to me as well; I love the optical illusions of them, how if you move a Noh mask at the right angle you can get multiple emotions and ideas. Really beautiful and compelling.
I have a fascination with masks as well; they're oddly compelling. Faces we wear over faces. Faces that hide faces. Thanks for this vid.
oh masks are so fun, I adore them.
thank you for the video.
perhaps you could cover the carnival makes, and the pacific north west masks.
Very interesting and informative! 👍
Omg yes!! I've been obsessed with masks for a long time ago, but I never thought on investigate and this is just what I wanted to watch
This was incredibly fascinating, thank you so much for making this ❤
Such an artfully cool topic! This is exciting & I for o e am enjoying the journey, as we explore more & more great art! Have a blessed day everyone!👍🤟😎
im very interested in the Dogons in Mali. thanks you, a part 2 would be nice!
This is very interesting Mr.dweller, especially about the noh masks that each one wields a different facial features and different mood themes, but the best Kind of mask is the hanya mask.
Very wicked
Esref Armagan, would love if you could cover the artistic ventures of this phenomenal type of artist, thank you for your efforts and wonderful videos, you're the best 💚
Obligatory covid mask reference right here
Feeling called to bring mask making into my practice… THIS VIDEO IS EXACTLY WHAT IVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR
All kinds of art forms indeed. Great video!
A part 2 would be nice. Do you have interest in plaque masks and death masks?
I thank you fir offering such high quality and interesting content for free to us
