The story behind Venice Carnival masks is fascinating! In this travel video I help you discover the art of Venice mask making.
The Venice carnival started as a cultural celebration-a chance for everyone in the city of Venice to be on an equal level-regardless of how rich or poor they were.
Unfortunately, the party had to end for hundreds of years. But, the city of Venice brought the festival and tradition back in the 1980s!
We visit the world-famous Ca' Macana workshop who has kept the ancient tradition of mask making alive. These handmade works of art are simply amazing. They even made all the masks seen in the Hollywood film Eyes Wide Shut starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman!
Be sure to check out this family owned workshop below!

I really love the aesthetic of Venetian masks. There’s something so haunting and spookily beautiful, even trippy about them. Does this visual style/aesthetic have a name, or like is it inspired by some particular school and/or era of art?

Feel the exact same way! Not sure of the deep history, but the idea was to create a way to hide identities for all sorts of reasons from political to parties. Basically a way to put everyone on the same level. I do know the strange look and shape of the most famous masks comes from the plague doctors who wore them. They hoped the mask would keep them from getting the disease. I imagine it didn’t help at all!

I adore the Venetian masks. I have even began collecting, with 3 (or 2 if you dont count a mini keychain version) so far

That's awesome! Since visiting this studio, I have a couple already. I get attached to things when they have a great history/story behind them.
Thanks for watching and the feedback!

I believe he told me that (or at least I know I asked) so let me take a look. It wasn’t anything special is what I remember. The paper, however, was by far the secret ingredient! Thanks for watching btw!
