- From a broken family, rejected and perceived to be wild, unstable and basically a madman his entire life, little would anyone predict that within such a person an incredibly gifted and insightful artist would reside.
An artist with a pure and one-of-a-kind affinity for nature, who would depict wild animals and natural beauty in such a way that it almost creates its own mythology. Immersing the natural world around into a realm of mysticism and wonder. Often considered to be the Vincent Van Gogh of his generation due to his similarly naive, untrained and nature-inspired style and not to mention being tragically misunderstood.
The artist I’m referring to for today’s video is Swiss outsider artist Antonio Ligabue. Living most of his adult life as a wanderer, in and out of many hospitals and mental institutions, historians and art critics would find the strange life and mental instability of Antonio irresistibly fascinating and unfortunately from what I found in my research, this has tainted the meaning and reception of his art over the years. But hopefully in today’s video, we can look at Atonio Ligabue’s art in a different way, in the way it was intended. To see not only his art, but the wider world around us, through the exact same eyes of this fascinating individual.

You should cover William Uternmohlen. He was an artist influenced by Francis Bacon and German Expressionism but was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 1995, and did art until he literally forgot how to do art.
The "fox" painting is the most beautiful picture of madness I have had the pleasure to view. It is a summation of the artist and the art. Sublimely gorgeous!
you should make a video on Henry Darger - he was a fantastic outsider artist and fused the grotesque with the childlike in a unique way & his art was unknown until his death.
Wonderful artwork, glad he found success after such a tortured upbringing and never feeling like he 'fitted in' anywhere, no wonder he felt such an affinity for and with animals. Great video, thanks for your work, always a joy.
Thanks for sharing a bit about Antonio. I'd never heard of him before before you presented this video. I'm doing a course in Early childhood and we've studied the impact of early childhood trauma, which is clearly what this poor block suffered throughout his adult life. An amazing artist, I love his work.

I had the chance to visit the Van Gogh exhibition in Rome's Palazzo Bonaparte earlier this year, and upon seeing the thumbnail of the video immediately recognized that I'd seen Ligabue's portrait there in comparison to Van Gogh's. Glad I'm getting the chance to learn more.

I think an artist that you may enjoy is Mario Duplantier from the band gojira. He’s got some really beautiful paintings and ink work. A lot of it is very nature oriented and pretty powerful. On top of that he’s a great drummer.

Thank you Blind dweller for researching Ligabue you really gave an excellent insight on his mind and art.He suffered a lot very misunderstood ,people couldn’t see passed his ragged looks.He loved his animals so much and when the PO river flooded he made sure to save his rabbits dogs and chickens from the water.it’s true the majority of people rarely understand diversity and innovation till it’s too late.At least Andrea Mozzali another established artist noticed his talent and just thanks to Mozzali we know about Ligabue.nevertheless Antonio would have continued to paint and sculpt even if he would have never been noticed because his art was the love he never found in people

Wow! What a beautiful human! I wish I could've hugged him. I was thinking that some of his art did look to be influenced by Japanese art I've seen, which is very interesting. Those animal cards don't look like that kind of art so it's neat that his paintings look this way. I think it's awesome that he had an affinity for animals and nature in general. Maybe it's because animals love unconditionally and with him being homeless, he saw the way they take care of each other and their young. And those rabbits probably treated him better than most humans did at the time. Either way, what a cool man! I can relate to his love for animals and nature. I'm the type of person who apologizes to the grass when I have to mow it, or to saplings that threaten to grow into the foundation of my house when I have to uproot them. I feel like a serial killer...haha! I really do hate hurting anything that's alive. As for spiders- I LOVE them! I don't want them crawling on me while I sleep, but they're fascinating little creatures! Thank you for this video! I'd never heard of Ligabue before, but I have seen some of his work before. Just didn't know who created it.

I must say *Antonio Ligabue* used an excellent technique painting those animals; especially all that detail in their patterns & those vivid bright colors ... beautiful & stunning
I really love the explanation behind the human skulls found in his work because that has been something I've been saying for a long time. That we actually overrate ourselves and if it wasn't for our little gadgets that makes killing a polar bear easier, then we'd be as helpless as the usual three ringed seal you can watch videos of being ripped to shreds alive, I also like that many of these artists you cover on here are self taught. I really relate to these type of misunderstood self made artists over the more favored and and privileged ones in classical art history. Maybe because I'm self teaching too and sometimes (like today) have serious doubts about my abilities as an artists, on top of going through shit circumstances, but HEY! If these people never gave up, then why should I? Also I hope you keep making videos like these as they are really inspirational, just some ideas. Have you ever considered covering James Jean, Vladimir Kush, or Avogado 6? I'd definitely love to hear your interpretation on these guys art, especially the third guy, he doesn't have much of a bio unfortunately but there is a lot of meaning behind his art so I think it'd still be worth it.

I'M IN LOVE. I've just discovered this channel recently, finding more and more secret gems. The fact that all these informative videos are for free is just magnificent to me, and I'm sure the loyal viewers and subscribers are equally grateful as me. I've been to art school and the content here is just as educational and giving (if not actually more) as the things I've learned in "professional" lectures. I return here every day with a cup of coffee, but now I simply had to write a comment because this video hit a nerve in me as both a mediocre artist and a spiritual person who haven't given in to the illusion of human superiority in the animal kingdom/nature. About halfway through this video, an animated short film called "Resilience" by CalArts Film 2023 came to my mind when I saw the skeletal human remains and the entire human vs nature thing became a topic here. It's barely 3 minutes long but looking at it now I think it's truly captures the essence of our everlasting talented Mr. Ligabue. I'm ever grateful for having been discovering this beautiful artistic spirit here. Never quit spreading the word of these remarkable artists, and the compendium of personalities and individuals lurking behind their creative outlet. Blind Dweller is much needed in these strange times where everything is moving so fast. Ligabue masterpieces are the portrait of the powerful nature down in Gualtieri on the river Po. The river there is so strong and the trees there are so particularlly unique. I tried to trace his feelings going exactly where he lived. I was expecting him coming out from the wood or strolling around Gualtieri's porches.

13:44. I see a man looking similar to Antonio. A blue flower above the lion represents an eye. Leaves construct and other fauna constructs his face. The man is frowning, but not sad. Angry. Could it be he's angry because he is an animal hiding in the woods, intertwined with nature, hiding because he cannot come to terms with him the man or him the animal? I believe there are ciphers in his work, whether conscious or unconscious, he is always part of the work, even intertwined with the painting itself.

How is Rousseau an insider and Ligabue an outsider?!? I love Rousseau but Ligabue is quite a bit better and more interesting painter. His art is outrageously good. Outsider art is a label the art world uses if they think the artist is actually the “r” word. It’s honestly pretty offensive when the person is not handicapped mentally.
