    I carry my sawed-off 12 gauge when I cycle.....I use it to enforce *_this_* rule: if I'm able to touch your car with my 12 gauge pointed sideways like I'm doing a drive-by, then you're too damned close. When drivers see the 12 gauge, they swerve out of the way real quick giving me the space I need.

    In my city, bike lanes don't exist. It's fine to ride on side streets as there aren't many cars, but on the made roads it's impossible. You have to choice but to ride on the sidewalks. You just have to be sensible and not go hurdling down into groups of people is all. Why is the comment section so heated about this

    San Francisco has a network of bicycle dedicated streets. It's well worth checking the recommended streets to ride on before tracking across the city. This is especially true on the one way streets in the downtown area. For example Polk(two-way street) street is a pretty decent street to ride but Larkin or Hyde(parallel one-way streets) are terrible. I'm an avid cyclist but as a driver I'm left frustrated by cyclist who leave rush hour traffic unable to pass when the next street over has a bike lane. The best solution to make San Francisco more bike friendly is more dedicated bike routes. The more we as cyclist use these routes the more we will own and justify having been given those precious few extra inches of asphalt. The changes on Market street is the perfect example. For those old enough to remember cycling on Market street before it was converted to a more bike friendly street is a perfect reminder. Cyclist have the right to use any street in San Francisco. As we take ownership of our designated bicycle routes the more we can justify continued bicycle improvements on theses streets and lobby for more streets to become converted to bike friendly streets. The truth is streets with no cyclist makes it easier to drive. Let's use the streets we have won over to their fullest.
    Eventually San Francisco may go so far as to actually putting bike lanes on the correct place on the road like the most progressive cities in Europe. A correctly designed multi vehicle street should have the bike lane between the parked cars and the side walk. Not between the parked cars and the driving lane.
    Correct street design = SIDE WALK--BIKE LANE--PARKING LANE--MOTOR TRAFFIC
    Incorrect street design = SIDE WALK-PARKING LANE-BIKE LANE-MORTOR TRAFFIC

      Now I drive n sf n have no light owning, light running fools screaming n yelling n going slower in your car for safety only invites more aggressive riding from fools.

    Yay for this video! I especially love this: "The most important thing you can do is ride predictably," because if we bikers all follow the rules, drivers will know how to act around us and we'll all be safer.
    One thing I've seen a lot of people do recently is cross intersections way over in the crosswalk and then pull back out into the lane. I'm not sure why people think that is a good idea; it seems like it would just confuse drivers and put the bikers at risk.

    • @BexCatherder
      @BexCatherder 9 лет назад

      I do this in places where the bike lane is murky because many people who pull away when a light turns green gunn the engine to beat bicyclists. This often is dangerous because they come super close to me and seem annoyed that I might block them. So I just let them go and get out of the way.

    • @MichelleGlauser
      @MichelleGlauser 9 лет назад

      Bex Cat-herder
      Interesting. I guess the problem I see with that is the people behind the first cars are still going to gun it and they'd think I was out of the way and then suddenly I come back in. I think riding in a consistent line would make them less likely to be surprised by me. There will always be people who drive too closely, but at least they'll know where I am.

    • @ShermanSitter

    • @djkenny1202
      @djkenny1202 8 лет назад +1

      +lentztu There is not one single civilized country requiring silly things like special license to ride a bicycle. It would cost more to do that than the intake from issuing the licenses as well. Bikes simply are beneficial and encouraged. We have horrible investment compared to many European countries that have no special fees or licenses. They know the population will end up healthier and happier as a result that pollution levels were lower, that livability goes way up when people have cycling as an option and it has been made appearing with proper investment in infrastructure. I wish we would grow up.

    • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 6 лет назад +2

    • @alex2143
      @alex2143 Год назад

      @@DaveSmith-cp5kj have YOU been to Europe? Because this is completely false. European cities are denser, but that is more because of how American cities sprawl out with huge highways, enormous parking lots and single family zoning pretty much everywhere, driving everything further apart. Car centered infrastructure creates distances that ensure that only cars can reasonably cover.
      Furthermore, a lot of people in the US live in dense urban settings. Since bike lanes are 7 times as efficient as car lanes at actually moving people, not treating bikes as the preferred method of getting around practically ensures the city remains in a constant state of gridlock.

      There are signaling helmets and bicycle-attachment signaling lights (helmets are expensive, attachments are cheaper) which may be just what you need. I do wear knee and elbow pads for my commute after two scary falls that gave me a few scars and healthy fear of the road. I haven't found them too much hassle if you just plant to dedicate 5 minutes a day to putting them on and taking them off. Also, you have to consider the extra space for storing them.

      Adriel MUtopia there are actually two arm signals for each arm, so I don't think one arm would be a problem (unless it's illegal or uncomfortable). A bent elbow with the hand pointing up would mean you are turning opposite direction of the arm you are using. (bent left arm = turning right, while straight left arm = turning left) and vice versa.

If there's one lane, bike one thirds of the way from the right and don't be afraid to take the lane if you need to turn left or to avoid any hazards (like parked cars and streets that cars may be pulling out of).

I didn’t want to break the bank on a first bike and the herd is a great option for getting a fast bike with reliable components. I plan on riding this bike for many years to come. Thank you Sava!

    To be fair and honest, you should make a video telling bicyclists not to ignore basic rules and not to be assholes to pedestrians. Many bicyclists, especially in SF, have become to pedestrians what cars are to bicycles.

    In Colorado there are a few differences, #1 bikes can stop into crosswalk if doing so makes it safer for the cyclist in the cyclists' opinion. #2 bikes have no obligation to avoid the sidewalk, and local laws have no authority without clear signage. By the way, it is stupid to ride with one ear. Listen to music with both ears or no ears, otherwise you can't tell which way cars come from.

    There is one thing I don't like about American road rules as a biker, it's compulsory to stop at road crossings. For a cyclist stopping requires putting a foot on the ground and that is not only uncomfortable, it takes all the flexibility out of your place on the road. You're stuck to where you are standing. Slowing down to a very low speed should also be an option, but by law it isn't.

  • @31.8mm
    @31.8mm 8 лет назад

    if it's music put it on ur left ear, if it's coach or gps guide voice u can put on either right or left, but if u ride on the traffic keep it on the left ear, why?

    -ear-to-brain science knowledge

    • @benbraceletspurple9108
      @benbraceletspurple9108 8 лет назад

      Yes, but when bicycling you should cover both ears or neither, otherwise your brain will be confused of which way cars are coming from. Try it, plug one ear and stand on the side if the road with your eyes closed, you won't be able to tell which direction cars are going or where they come from.

    • @31.8mm
      @31.8mm 8 лет назад

      i'll agree more on cover both ears with different reason,
      but so the bud shouldn't go too deep or the sound can't be too loud that we can't hear other sounds outside

    • @benbraceletspurple9108
      @benbraceletspurple9108 8 лет назад

      Ultimately, taking ears out of the equation all together is better than trying to double task, which doesn't exist, the brain is a mono-processor, humans can not double task or multi task. It's better to not be able to hear at all. There are deaf cyclists, but not schizophrenic cyclists.

    creeping into the crosswalk is WAY worse with cars, as with a bike you can back up easily and quickly, and hardly block anything at all, but a big SUV will completely cut off the walk space to all pedestrians in the area. either way, don't be "That one guy". also, when using a car, never park in a bike lane. it puts anyone and everyone on a pushbike going that route at risk, and is a very crass and inconsiderate thing to do. again, do not be "That one guy".

  • @ObamaoZedong
    @ObamaoZedong 7 лет назад

    See the stupid replies below. Especially the one "I don't know of many pedestrians who are walking at 20 mph." Brilliant!!! Timothy Fish thinks that pedestrians don't get killed from head injury because they don't walk very fast??? I hope he is joking and not actually devoid of brain matter. Since there are as many as there are that think helmets only actually help while riding bicycles and motorcycles, I suspect there are many with no ability to reason whatsoever. Maybe people feel like they are Lance Armstrong when they put on their cute little helmets. Yup that's it. Even though over four thousand pedestrians die every year compared to only 700 bicycle riders in the U.S. people only wear helmets on bicycles to get that "Lance Armstrong feeling". I guess wearing helmets in cars where over four times as many die from head injuries as on bicycles isn't popular either because Lance Armstrong doesn't "lead the pack" of sheep by wearing a helmet while driving his car. As for me, if something I want do looks as though I should wear a helmet I don't do that activity. That doesn't limit me too much as I don't race bicycles, motorcycles or cars. (Where incidentally all the entrants wear helmets.) Do I actually think people should wear helmets as pedestrians? No. They would make a fool out of themselves just like the bicycle riders do.

      +bottmar1 - Last time I wrecked on my bike, there were neither cars nor pedestrians involved. I hit my helmet on the street, and tucked and rolled onto my back and then ragdolled. I don't put my arms out when I wreck, because I'm usually moving pretty fast, and putting your arms out is a real good way to get hurt. If I didn't have a helmet on at that time, I would have been injured much more seriously than I was. I'll continue to wear a helmet, even if it makes me look silly to you.

    • @EvilWizardMaltheore

      +Brett Scott Gentry haha yea don't stick your arms out like a normal person, use your head to break your fall. I've had a pedal catch pavement into a turn at 40 mph where I flew off and only got a small scrape on an elbow without a helmet. It's all about knowing how to disperse the energy of the impact when you fall. I've almost never worn a helmet and never hit my head or been significantly injured
