Shan-Yu is my favourite Disney villain. He's got his goals, he's not showy or flashy about it, he's just determined and extremely capable and he *almost freaking wins*. It’s also why TLM’s villain defeat is so remembered too, she gets purposely impaled. Both died in messed up ways, and the main characters are the ones to have to do it.
Also he said "the soldier from the mountains" and not "the girl" cause women could join the Hun army so he saw her as equal with the other soldiers from the begining
You’ll never be able to hear anybody say “Let’s get down to business “ without following with “and defeat the Huns”. It’s so catchy. All of these songs are true bops.
Good point. I like that. I always thought of his wind/mountain line as being more of a savage dunk on Shan Yu in a "you're just blowing a bunch of air, idgaf" way than an affirmation of the Emperor's own actual unbendability. But I do like your take on it and how that adds to the moment he bows to Mulan, for sure
Notice how Shan Yu said "the soldier from the mountain" and not "the girl from the mountain". I believe women could serve in the Hun Army and the Huns treated women better than China did
One of the most common ways to get a wife in Mongol society was to steal one, this is still a problem to this day in kyrgyztan. Enlisted women or no enlisted women, when kidnapping is considered as typical in the marital institution as gift-giving, no moral pedestal is attainable
@@rextheroyalist6389 Same applies to many tribes in Northern Vietnam. Is just seen as normal over there. Talked with a girl who was a guide and her sister had it happen.
@@rextheroyalist6389 Morality is all relative. I totally agree with condemning theft of humans for marriage or any other purpose, but it's not logically sound to talk about it as if there's some objective matrix of morality against which to measure it. There is no literally-divine rubric listing the criteria for being awarded various amounts of moral points, after all, just systems humans make up and then pretend are divine lol. IMO utilitarianist logic lends itself well to developing sound moral systems, but mine is far from the only school of thought on how to identify what makes a moral system "good" 🤷♂️
It's also a reliably fabulous hit at any karaoke night. Just commit to the vibe and everyone in the room will be joining in and getting theatrical about it lol
Dean deBolis, a young animator at Disney, storyboarded the scene Mulan cuts her hair and decides to run away from home. He went on to direct all How To Train Your Dragon movies.
I always thought it was interesting how A Girl Worth Fighting For ends abruptly on the desolation of a village because throughout the song it is light hearted and that scene is such a stark contrast. It is the soldiers talking about maybe some of the motivation they had for why they're fighting. And to end it with "a girl worth fighting..." and then the scene of carnage. I thought it was such a powerful moment because it reminded them that it is NOT only a girl they are fighting for; it is their country and the lives of everyone in it. I will always have a deep respect for Mulan as a film. Everything about it is solid even after multiple rewatching. And although it is not historically accurate, it builds upon the story a different depth, one of family and the virtues of persevering.
Very well said. I love the take I've seen floating around where people point out that the never-seen little girl implied by the doll is the one who replaces their idea of "a girl worth fighting for" at that moment, representing a transformation of their motivations from selfish to selfless. Honestly felt silly the first time I read that for never having thought of it that way before.
@@SergioLeRoux I thought it was the 2020 remake that was made to pander to them. When Disney was making the Mulan animated movie, a lot of Chinese say they didn't like that they were gonna Disney-fy it but Disney didn't care & continue.
Just as a heads up, never watch the live action version. It completely missed the point of the character of Mulan. They took a character that had to actually prove herself and earn her worth among the guys and turned her into what was basically a chosen one who was already talented at fighting. Not to mention the dated CGI and the story as a whole, while different just didn't entertain much.
@@christanbranch5811 I mean, if you consider a magical mystical energy called ki as being realistic and part of it, then maybe. Regardless, it made for a really boring film.
some people react to these movies and straight away criticise the characters' actions using mindset of the modern world. I like that you guys recognise and understand that in those times, filial piety and submission to authority is the widely accepted mindset. like your reaction
This film was also really good at having a good sized Asian-American cast: B.D Wong as Shang Pat Morita as the Emperor James hong as Chi Fu Soon-Tek Oh (as Fa Zhou, the father) James Shigeta as General Li (Shang’s father) George Takei as the Head Ancestor Jerry Tondo as Chien-Po Gedde Watanabe as Ling Ming-Na Wen as Mulan etc.
The fact that James Hong is Chi-Fu only became apparent to me a few months ago, despite his incredibly distinctive voice. I finally got into AvatarTLA and heard his voice and went OMG IS THAT DAVID LO PAN FROM BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA and looked him up and was blown away by all the roles and especially voice roles he's done! Can't believe I never realized Chi-Fu was him before that, he almost makes Chi-Fu sound a little too real and less caricaturey than I usually hear him. The crossover will never cease to amuse me. "You were not brought upon this world to 'get it', captain!" "Who is this woman? Friend of yours, huh? This really pisses me off to no end!"
Mulan is one of THE best Disney movies ever. As a little girl I was (and I still am) so impressed by her bravery and her dedication, going to a war for such a selfless reason like protecting her father but also trying to gain honor for the family. I don't know if I had the guts to do something outstanding like that. I wish more girls today would take HER as an inspiration instead of todays influencers of the internet. 🥴 (Or the "woman of the year" Cardi B... Like c'mon. 🤣)
Ikr. The Halloween after it came out my cousin and I both unknowingly dressed as her. Except she wore her matchmaker dress and I wore her army uniform just because I loved how brave she was. She was definitely inspiring for me as a kid.
Stories of impossible feats like the story of Mulan , can inspire us to be that much more brave and bold even if only a little. I’m sure more than one weak nerd has been so impressed by Goku that they are now stronger than they even would have been without that inspiration. That’s the neat benefit of telling heroic tales.
there is nothing wrong with being inspired by Cardi B. from cardi you can from her the fact that she is always herself, she doesnt change that aspect of her and she says whats on her mind, she has no filter which is not always a bad thing. too many people try to fit themselves into a box and try to make others happy with how outside forces think they should be

I got super excited when I realized that James Hong, the terrifying hilarious David Lo Pan himself from Big Trouble In Little China, was the voice of that jerk Chi-Fu lol. He's done a TON of great voice work. His voice is so mega distinctive that I can't believe I didn't connect it before, it's almost like he tried to make Chi-Fu less exaggerated than his usual sound or something, but once I realized it was him the match suddenly felt incredibly obvious. this was so iconic, it shaped a whole generation Edit : I love the story telling a lot, all the implications like when the Huns killed off one of the messengers they only showed it by the cut & the audio, when they wanted to show that the General had been killed they only showed Chien Po carrying the General's helmet. Let's not even get started on the amazing transitions and the SMOKE ART I've also seen the older princess movies that were hand-drawn, in sleeping beauty they had a lady irl just spinning and dancing around while the artist sits and draws to capture the movements
Also in a girl worth fighting for i don't know if you noticed but each outline of the woman the three were describing were the outilnes of the three princesses from Mulan 2!
I wish you react to "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron", that fairy tale is so underrated but so beautiful, also the songs are the most beautiful I have ever heard in fairy tales
The live action killed SO hard the spirit of the story, it is sad. The ending scene with the dad, was ridiculous. The animation hit the emotions the right way evry single time, and it shows that the father doesn't care about honor at the end, just that his daughter is back and safe. In the movie that doesn't happened
@@gotz1516 about that, it does not. I suggest looking for Chinese youtubers reviews, they hated, and said that the animation is better. Just 2 examples: 1- the way the movie represented the "Chi" is not real, is not what it really is. 2- the witch, the concept of witch as it is represented in the movie does not correspond to the Chinese culture, it was a occidental representation. There are good reviews of Chinese people comparing to the real poem of Mulan, i recommend strongly 😘
a version of Mulan I really like and enjoy is the TV show Once Upon a Time the way they portrayed Mulan to me was almost spot on of course there were a few alterations to her character like most of the fairy tale characters in the show But still its one of the better live action portrayals of a disney character!
I remember when I was old enough for ot to really click that the scene with Mulan and the little girls doll was meant to imply the girl is dead as well. So masterfully done.
Yeah same, I remember it being kinda vague to me when I first saw it in theaters, I think I didn't really visually interpret the bodies correctly and assumed it was just all wreckage of some whole town being burned and the people had been forced to flee or something. But a couple years later I was like WHOOAAAAA The creepy part before that with the "The little girl will be missing her doll. We should return it to her" registered with me as them approaching in hostility, though, for sure. That was scary as hell. IMO it's an even more chilling goosebumpsy moment than the "how many men does it take to deliver a message" line.
@keepitsecret-dl1pr I'm not positive he's the most chillingly scary (to me personally, since it's subjective of course) but yeah he's sure as heck up there. The only other soul-quaking movie villain coming to mind right now as a competitor is the Childcatcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but idk if that's Disney-related at all
@keepitsecret-dl1pr Ah I remember the actual Disney competitor I was trying to think of -- Frollo, the hypocrite creeper clergy guy in Hunchback of Notre Dame. I personally think he's even worse than Shan Yu in terms of sheer hateable ick. He's scarier (to me) in the realistic "commentary on a quality some humans actually have" way. But in terms of pure fantasy-tier evil vibes, yeah Shan Yu wins. He's just less realistic, so gets to me less
"I wonder if that's like, the rule or whatever? Because the emperor is bowing?" I certainly don't claim to be an expert on Chinese culture, but it's probably pretty unlikely because emperors in most cultures don't bow to many people. He also made such a point of NOT bowing to Shan Yu, which makes it that much bigger of a deal for him to bow to Mulan. But many cultures DO have a rule that, if the king/emperor sits, you sit. If he stands, you stand, etc. So if that's the rule, it would make sense for the people to take the bowing cue from the emperor too.
When I was young and saw this, my mom's take on it was that an Emperor themselves is a symbol of their nation, in the same sense as use of "the royal 'we'" used in western rulerships -- and so maybe there wasn't some codified rule about bowing when he does, but rather to the people their Emperor bowing effectively means China as an entity/idea itself is bowing, and they identify as being part of that/subject to the Emperor's decision on their behalf. (After all, Shan Yu wanted the Emperor to bow to him and it would have served as a submission on the part of the entire political entity of China, not just the Emperor himself, so same deal.)
But the Huns popped out of the snow, so she can't have killed that many with the avalanche. I know, I know, I should take it up with Lindsay, not you, because I know you're quoting her, but she was still wrong.
Yes! Mulan is fantastic, i have the songs on my main playlist and it’s so quotable too. I’m excited for The Iron Giant reaction, i haven’t seen it in years, i remember loving the book too but I read it a long time ago so I’ll probably have to reread it soon.
I'm so, so glad you both enjoyed this film. 'Mulan' has so much heart and I really love the theme of family and honour. This film also has my favourite cinematic shots (ie: the epic montage when she takes her father's place) - SO cool! It would be very interesting to hear Ninetails' take on western/ disney animation. I'd actually love to hear his thoughts on 'Beauty and the Beast' if he hasn't seen that one :)
When I was a kid, my brother insist me to watch it in theatre. I was kinda don't want to coz I wasn't into "princess" back then. But after watching it, I understand that Mulan is more than just princess movie. The war scene in snowy mountain and when ppl bows to Mulan scenes was really aaweeee me. Imagine watching it in 1998 in theatre as a kid!!! Nothing can compare those scenes!!

Honestly, as much as I love how sassy Mulan's grandma is, my favorite part of the movie is Yao roasting Chi-Fu in the song "A Girl Worth Fighting For". Chi-Fu: 🎶I've a girl back home who's unlike any other🎶 Yao: 🎶 Yeah, the only girl who'd love him is his mother🎶 Just the look on his face alone is priceless. 😅😂🤣
You should listen that moment in french. Chi-Fu : Une belle fille m'attend depuis bientôt 40 ans (A beautiful girl has been waiting for me for almost 40 years) Yao : Depuis tout ce temps, elle n'a sûrement plus de dents (Since all this time, she probably has no more teeth)
As a kid I was going to a type of self defense training and once year we had a sleep over in their gym and watched this movie. Such good memories. Love the movie to this day :)
Mulan is such a classic, loved this reaction! Would love to see more of these types of Disney animation/princess movies from you guys as well!! There's so many good ones out there, and didn't know ninetailedbrush was an animator so seeing his reactions to animation would be a super cool perspective, too! Also loved the appreciation for the synth montage where Mulan makes her decision to leave, it's so badass and the music is so good - and even cooler if you guys have heard the theory about how Mulan is actually the "Great Dragon" awakened to protect her family, as she was sitting under that same statue when she made her decision and you continue to see the dragon motif throughout the entire scene (the sword, the folding screen walls, etc.)
Gonna make it simple: MULAN ROCKS!!!!! That was the princess I wanna be when I was a kid!!! Thanks for the reaction guys I had a smile the entire time!
Mulan was voiced by Ming-Na Wen. Who played Agent Melinda "The Cavalry" May in MARVEL Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D and is now Fennec Shand in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. She's officially a Disney Legend and jas completed a Disney Hat trick of being in multiple Big Disney franchises.
I just saw "Mulan reaction" on my notification at first and I was like "pls be The good one, pls be The good one, ple be The good one... ITS THE GOOD ONE, LETS GO !!!!" One of the best disney movies!
June Foray, (voice of Looney Tune's Granny and Witch Hazel, Rocky from Rocky and Bullwinkle, Susie Loo Who, and 1,000 of others) was the speaking voice of the Grandmother. Marni Nixon, who dumbed the singing for Eliza Doolittle in movie "My Fair Lady", Maria in the movie "West Side Story", and Anna in the movie, "The King And I" did the singing voice!
that's one of my favorite parts actually lol, the fact that she grabbed it with her fan always amazed me. Not only does it show ingenuity, it's the perfect showcase of how badass it can be to be a woman and a warrior, the fan being so traditionally feminine yet she used it as a weapon.
The original singing voice of Mulan is the TONY Awardee Lea Salonga from the Philippines, who was the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in the animated version of "Aladdin". Also, in the animated version there is a hawk who accompanies Shan Yu, without knowing that in the live action version, that hawk transformed into a powerful witch/shapeshifter, Xianliang, who joins Bori Khan.
For the past 20 something years, I cannot get down to business without wanting to defeat the Huns. To a point where my boss stopped his "Let's get down to business" catchphrase before each meetings because he got tired of hearing me answering "To defeat, the huuuuns". He stopped after I pulled a prank on him and I got my whole team to watch the movie. So on a Friday morning , during a zoom meeting, he clapped his hands together and said "All right, so let's get down to business" and all 9 of us started singing "To defeat the huns, did they send me daughters, when I asked for sooooons?". He just hung his head and started laughing. I love my team
Although there's a lot of disagreement about it, I've always thought that _Mulan II_ was one of the best of the Disney direct-to-video sequels along with _Aladdin and the King of Thieves._ Lord that was back when direct-to-video actually meant VHS tapes. Fuck I'm getting old.
i always loved Mulan telling herself "get off the roof, get off the roof" right before it blows up. might not be the animation your thinking of but check out the 1977short, "wizard of speed and time" live action stop motion musical, one man team, need i say more? movie of same name on youtube with his blessing about it and the story behind its making
They NEED to make more movies like this! All the symbolism and detail is amazing. If you notice you aren't able to see a clear reflection of her until she looks into the sword. And if you look, when she's going to get her horse, she mouths 'its me' in Chinese to him because he doesn't recognize her. It's all so amazing!!! Arguably the most bad-ass Disney princess (even if she isn’t technically a princess). She saves China! And Mulan doesn’t get married off at the end of the movie either. I think this was the first Disney animated film that used CGI (for replicating all those Hun soldiers). Ming-Na Wen (speaking voice of Mulan) is the only Disney princess to also have TV roles in a Marvel show and a few Star Wars shows (two live action and one animated).
Late addition to the comments, but the reason for that blade shape (called a flamberge) is actually due to the more severe wounds it causes. A straight blade is an easy wound to close. Not for this one. It creates one that does more damahe going in and out, as well as more difficult to sew up.
I know that Disney calls her a princess, but for me she isn't one, she is way betther then that, she is a fucking warrior!!!! My fave female protagonist in Disney's movies
Disney had to change their definition of what makes a Disney Princess in order to include her because she was so popular. Born royal, marry royal, or performed an act of heroism. But Mulan was indeed an icon growing up.
Most of the Disney princesses are hella strong tho. Putting Mulan above them just reeks of sexism. Even tho some are heavily flawed, like Ariel the obsessed anthropologist, all of them are pretty awesome and flaws aren’t bad things if we can learn from them. And I kinda think it’s sad ppl will put down the girls who aren’t full on action heroes like Mulan. even Moana (while she’s physically capable, most of her abilities comes to a more intelligent pursuit of way finding and her empathy and kindness is what saves the day) and girls like Cinderella are strong w/o having to rely on physical strength. Cinderella especially, who is a domestic abuse survivor, is out down just cuz she wasn’t able to escape herself in a society which has taken all her inherited family wealth and given it to ppl who abuse her. That latter one is especially rooted in the need for ppl to victim blame. So I feel like “princess” is just a blanket term for girls w/ power, and that in of itself is just about treating them as role models whom they should aspire to be like, strong girls who make mistakes but can be smart and strong. While some aren’t as “strong”, like Aurora, it’s cuz originally the brand only had literal princesses, but then expanded once they started telling stories about girls who obtained titles that weren’t of royalty.
Mulan is one of my all time favorite Disney movies another is the little mermaid and the little mermaid 2 return to the sea! A fun fact to note is that the Hun leader didn't recongize that Mulan was a woman and only adresses her as the solider from the mountian that's because the women of the huns were soliders and warriors like the men... fun fact from other reactors comments sections who have reacted to this movie... and one i find even cooler!

There are actually two music cues for the sequence where Mulan prepares to leave home and take her father's place. Both work but in different ways with each being on different Mulan soundtrack/score albums. You may be able to find the alternate track on youtube. Outside of his score for The Great Train Robbery, ,this is my second favorite Jerry Goldsmith score.

In the lake scene where Mulan is bathing and tells Yao, Ling and Chien-Po that she doesn't want to take Yao anywhere, the German translation is: "Come on, Ping. We will show him!" and Mulan says: "I don't want to show anything to anyone here." which I highly enjoyed. Usually, I like the original versions far more, but that was brilliantly translated.

Disney had to change the rules for who could be a Disney princess just so Mulan could qualify. She's not born or married into royalty, so they added "great act of heroism" as a qualification. Also Mulan I believe is the only princess who has killed anybody, let alone thousands.
nice reaction. Also amazingly, is also quite culturally sensitive for a Hollywood movie made in Chinese setting. As a Chinese (albeit, I'm born and raised in Malaysia, not China), there is almost nothing in this movie which gives wrong stereotypes of China or Chinese people in general. Even the whole myopic gender bias, sadly, is quite true from what I learned, although of course not all Chinese follow the same rules, the Mulan depicted here seems to be from a upperclass family, possibly Confucian Scholar class plus her father is a war veteran which would give their family quite a bit of prestige and wealth. Also the grandmother is so awesome, not many people comment about the grandma.
Mulan wanted to impress her father by pretending to be a man, she even brought home a phallic symbol (the sword) while her father waited under a flowering tree (he just wanted his daughter back). In the training, all the men were too masculine - they were using brute strength, only mulan was using both masculine and feminine traits to get the arrow. In the end the men balanced their too masculine energy by dressing as women. Lesson all of us needs to balance our femine and masculine to achieve great things.
thats cool you do animation! what kinds of influences and styles do you do? Also, the reason the great stone dragon can't be woken, is because when Mulan took the sword, and her fathers place, she took the dragon spirit with her. You can see the dragon imagery around the Fa home is all the same as the stone dragon in it's design.
for kids who grew up watching this movie, I guarantee the scene change from "A Girl Worth Fighting For" to seeing the destroyed town was many kids' first exposure to Mood Whiplash
A lot of ppl talk about women empowerment in regards to this movie. Which is true, women can be as capable as men in their own ways that shouldn’t be shamed and woman stereotypes to put them down & how things were back then. But it also talks about male stereotypes and how wrong they are too, as well as toxic masculinity. This is from both sides. There’s also a lot of talk about the value of ppl, beyond just their gender, and their servitude to men or institutions like the government, and how worth also isn’t from how high you’ve climbed up. There’s also hints about homosexuality/bisexuality, unlike the west, China was more accepting of this in ancient times. Shang liked Mulan even before the reveal of being a woman, and didn’t immediately fall for her upon finding out she was one. This was probably accidental, but the fact those themes were in there and they kept romance out of the serious war stuff was great. A solid movie. Also has one of the best songs in Disney history lol
As a tomboy raised on Disney princesses against her will, Mulan absolutely taught me that a willingness to see gender as fluid could be a strength. This was, and still is, my fave Disney movie. And it’s deeply satisfying to see men appreciate it.
The beauty of all versions of Mulan told is the moral of the story is essentially every woman is capable of greatness regardless if you chose to dedicate your life to something like being a soldier or are living a regular life. I find it powerful that despite all that she achieved and the offer she got in this movie by the emperor, that she chose to go home to her family after restoring her family's honor.

“How lucky can they be? They’re dead”
“I think it’s going well”
“Sign me up for the next war!”
Grandma is seriously one of my fav XD 🤣
In the french version, instead of " I think it's going well " she says " I think she become warmer "
That abrupt end to, "a girl worth fighting for," gives me chills each time.
I always finish for them, despite the change of tone when they discovered the destroyed village.
Especially when you consider who the real girl worth fighting for is: the owner of the doll.
Notice how Shan Yu said "the soldier from the mountain" and not "the girl from the mountain". I believe women could serve in the Hun Army and the Huns treated women better than China did
This is true
I mean the "Huns" never fought China nor existed where they supposedly did in the movie so not really how any of it worked as far as I know
One of the most common ways to get a wife in Mongol society was to steal one, this is still a problem to this day in kyrgyztan.
IMO utilitarianist logic lends itself well to developing sound moral systems, but mine is far from the only school of thought on how to identify what makes a moral system "good" 🤷♂️
"ooh! Sign me up for the next war!" The grandma is the best character haha
Tip for anyone in university right now: listen to Be a Man from Mulan right before any kind of exam. It really works, I swear
It's also a reliably fabulous hit at any karaoke night. Just commit to the vibe and everyone in the room will be joining in and getting theatrical about it lol
I blasted almost there from the Princess and the Frog all the way to the bar exam for the second time. And I passed. So it actually works.😂

Dean deBolis, a young animator at Disney, storyboarded the scene Mulan cuts her hair and decides to run away from home. He went on to direct all How To Train Your Dragon movies.
Speaking of expressive horse, in 19:15 Shang's horse look just like him - first sad, then determined. Never noticed that until now
I always thought it was interesting how A Girl Worth Fighting For ends abruptly on the desolation of a village because throughout the song it is light hearted and that scene is such a stark contrast.
Plus there is no further sing along songs after this point in the movie
Actually the Huns treated women better than China did.
This movie was made to appeal to the Chinese market (it didn't).
@@SergioLeRoux I thought it was the 2020 remake that was made to pander to them. When Disney was making the Mulan animated movie, a lot of Chinese say they didn't like that they were gonna Disney-fy it but Disney didn't care & continue.
Actually according to original story(poem) Mulan was working for a Huns' emperor who ruled north China then.
Yeah i like to think hence "The soldier from the mountain" not "the man from the mountain" or some shit just "soldier"
I didn’t know that.
Ain't the remake based on the actual story through?
To put it simple. They tried to make wonder woman with a mere human but without the flaws of an inexperienced fighter

This film was also really good at having a good sized Asian-American cast:
B.D Wong as Shang
Pat Morita as the Emperor
James hong as Chi Fu
Soon-Tek Oh (as Fa Zhou, the father)
James Shigeta as General Li (Shang’s father)
George Takei as the Head Ancestor
Jerry Tondo as Chien-Po
Gedde Watanabe as Ling
Ming-Na Wen as Mulan
etc.

I found this out only a few months ago when I finally got into AvatarTLA and was like "OMG I HEAR LO PAN THAT'S TOTALLY HIM" and looked him up to be sure and saw Mulan in his insanely long filmography 😆
@evilfuzzymonster He also voiced the SUPREMELY wholesome 'Mr Ping' from the King Fu Panda trilogy! 😎

Best relationship advice right there. “You don’t find a girl like that every dynasty”
this was so iconic, it shaped a whole generation
Edit : I love the story telling a lot, all the implications like when the Huns killed off one of the messengers they only showed it by the cut & the audio, when they wanted to show that the General had been killed they only showed Chien Po carrying the General's helmet. Let's not even get started on the amazing transitions and the SMOKE ART
I've also seen the older princess movies that were hand-drawn, in sleeping beauty they had a lady irl just spinning and dancing around while the artist sits and draws to capture the movements
Yes
Yeeees
yesssss
I agree. Spirit is a marvellous tale and that OST is heartbreaking, while empowering and beautiful at the same time. It always brings tears to my eyes
The live action killed SO hard the spirit of the story, it is sad. The ending scene with the dad, was ridiculous. The animation hit the emotions the right way evry single time, and it shows that the father doesn't care about honor at the end, just that his daughter is back and safe. In the movie that doesn't happened
Except that the live action resembles the true story more.
@@gotz1516 about that, it does not. I suggest looking for Chinese youtubers reviews, they hated, and said that the animation is better. @@camsaturn It's true.
But a couple years later I was like WHOOAAAAA
The creepy part before that with the "The little girl will be missing her doll.
I was OBSESSED with this movie as a kid!
"I wonder if that's like, the rule or whatever? Because the emperor is bowing?"
I certainly don't claim to be an expert on Chinese culture, but it's probably pretty unlikely because emperors in most cultures don't bow to many people.
I just figured that if the emperor bows to someone and you don't, then you're implying you're higher than the emperor.
@@DoctorWortspieler I mean yeah, pretty much.

Chi-Fu: 🎶I've a girl back home who's unlike any other🎶
Yao: 🎶 Yeah, the only girl who'd love him is his mother🎶
Just the look on his face alone is priceless. 😅😂🤣
You should listen that moment in french.
Chi-Fu : Une belle fille m'attend depuis bientôt 40 ans (A beautiful girl has been waiting for me for almost 40 years)
Yao : Depuis tout ce temps, elle n'a sûrement plus de dents (Since all this time, she probably has no more teeth)
As a kid I was going to a type of self defense training and once year we had a sleep over in their gym and watched this movie. Such good memories. Love the movie to this day :)

Shan-Yu wasn't surprised that Mulan was a girl because the Huns actually allowed women to fight in their armies and sometimes even lead them.
10:49 - "that sword is made to be hard to grab it."
26:24 - Mulan with fan : "Hold my sake..."
This is my favorite comment 😂😂
that's one of my favorite parts actually lol, the fact that she grabbed it with her fan always amazed me.

My favorite Disney "princess"
I know that Disney calls her a princess, but for me she isn't one, she is way betther then that, she is a fucking warrior!!!! My fave female protagonist in Disney's movies
Disney had to change their definition of what makes a Disney Princess in order to include her because she was so popular. Born royal, marry royal, or performed an act of heroism.
But Mulan was indeed an icon growing up.
They technically do include her
Most of the Disney princesses are hella strong tho.
Mulan and Moana have the same spirited grandmother.

This is a good point. 😍
thats cool you do animation! what kinds of influences and styles do you do?
2:41 And the guy in the blue was Po’s dad.
Mulan and aladdin totally my top disney fav
As a tomboy raised on Disney princesses against her will, Mulan absolutely taught me that a willingness to see gender as fluid could be a strength. This was, and still is, my fave Disney movie. And it’s deeply satisfying to see men appreciate it.
Mulan, Beauty & the beast and The little mermaid are my Disney holy trinity
This movie is great on so many levels. The grandma is my favorite character.
The little "Alright guys" at the start of every episode is my favourite thing
The beauty of all versions of Mulan told is the moral of the story is essentially every woman is capable of greatness regardless if you chose to dedicate your life to something like being a soldier or are living a regular life. I find it powerful that despite all that she achieved and the offer she got in this movie by the emperor, that she chose to go home to her family after restoring her family's honor.
