They wrote the book for "I'd Rather Be Right" but musicals are usually credited to the composer and lyricist, who were Rogers and (Lorenz) Hart. They are never mentioned in the film. The show was produced in 1937 but Lorenz Hart even updated the lyrics for "I'd Rather Be Right" for a the film released during wartime. Rogers and Hart also wrote the music for "The Phantom President" (1932), Cohan's only film musical but apparently Cohan carried a grudge. The movie does show Cohan dancing and it's clear Cagney absolutely nailed Cohan's dancing style.
Wartime restrictions. The government restricted film stock and I believe there were limits the studios could spend on film production. But "YDD" is a masterpiece whether in color or black and white.
I actually forgot about this I am 8. And I loved this movie when I was 5 and 6 but when I turned seven in when this Covid happened I got into Mozart and Beethoven and Chopin but I am into this now

Astaire would've been a bad choice. Cohan was not an elegant, graceful dancer like Astaire. Nor was he as good a singer. Besides, only Cagney radiated the sort of human dynamo that the real Cohan must've been. Imaging a guy that writes plays and songs, acts and dances in them and runs a chain of theaters. He also 'Cohanized' plays for other playwrights and acted in plays written by others. A real theatrical genius.

My mother saw George M Cohan in a play in New York many many years ago and she said that James Cagney played a better George M Cohan, then George M Cohan did himself. I’m not sure exactly what year it was but I’m 78 years old and we left New York when I was three. So it was at least 75 years ago.

The impression by Cohan was light hearted and entertaining. It also covered up a political liability for FDR. Cohan prancing around and singing was something Roosevelt couldn’t do. FDR was a cripple and very few knew about it, the general public never did until years after his passing. At the time those in the news trade that did know respected him or were scared to death of the power of the White House. (Big difference from modern times, right?). How much of the Cagney movie when Cohan was awarded the CMOH is probably a bit more fiction. All that being said, this movie played great homage to Cohan, Cagney and the real FDR.

His wonderful footwork was much in evidence while refereeing the ball game with the dead end kids in Angels With Dirty Faces.
